We have more from danya bacchus. Reporter good morning. The destruction is staggering. Officials here in Fresno County say more than 300 structures have been wiped out by the creek fire. Oregon officials are now saying they are preparing for a mass fatality incident, saying there is a possibility that they will not have enough resources to handle the dead. Dana . Danya, those pictures look like an on, apocalyptic scene of a movie. Satellite imagery shows the smoke swirling more than a thousand miles into the pacific. The weather is a big factor in the wildfires. So for more on that, we turn to meteorologist jeff berardelli. Jeff, good morning. What can you tell us . Well, as you can see by looking at that satellite, it is just immense. These fires are huge. The smoke is suffocating. It is a big deal. Just to show that everythings connected, look at hue that smoke is swirl how that smoke is swirling into the pacific ocean, straight into the storm system which could deliver a little bit of muchneeded rain to the Pacific Northwest as we head into early this week. The smoke has been heading south or kind of confined along the coast. Thats going to change. The winds will switch direction, pushing everything north northeast across the Northern Tier of states. Lets talk about the western weather over the next couple of days. Its going to be warm. It will be dry. Not as hot as it was. Theres a little good news look to the storm to the west across the pacific ocean. That is going to be moving east. The good news is it will deliver a little rain to the coastal areas of oregon and washington especially. The bad news is the breeze is going to pick up, and that rain is not going to go very far inland have a lot of fires are. Switching gears, we have another tropical depression, right on top of extreme south florida right now near miami. Its going to deliver a lot of heavy rain to the keys during the day. As it heads out into the gulf of mexico over the next couple of days, it is going to strengthen, becoming Tropical Storm sally. Maybe even a lowend hurricane making landfall as early as late monday into tuesday along the northern gulf coast. I am concerned when i see things starting to move indoors, and that becomes more compelling when you get into the fall and the winter season. Reporter in an interview friday, dr. We sanitized the bus morning before we leave reporter there are signs that many are still too concerned to even begin a return to normal. On this school bus in plainview, new york, there are typically 40 students. On friday, there were only five. The reason why i think these buses arent really filling up with all the kids basically parents are scared. You know, they really dont want to send their kids to a situation that they dont know whats going to happen. Reporter Florida State universitys normally packed football stadium will be at 25 capacity today. Thats still 20,000 screaming fans when the team kicks off against georgia tech. But the tradition of tailorgating will be put on hold. Tailgating will be put on hold. Seems overkill to me. Reporter in albany, new york, a rash of positive cases amongst athletes plo prompted the school to suspend all fall sports and the School President to warn that campus could be shut down. We will definitely continue to move in this direction. If we find that anyone is endangering the health of our Campus Community and if oof our surrounding communities. Reporter more than 70 hostages who were about to die instead freed from their cells and flown to freedom. They realize theyre being liberated, and thats when it hit me like, what did we just do . Reporter one thing Sergeant Major Patrick Payne did was bring honor on the 9 11 generation. David martin, cbs news, the pentagon. What an incredible hero. Yeah. Especially something to reflect on one day after the 9 11 anniversary. It is crazy to think that this is that 9 11 generation, that that much time also has gone by. With eight students in a pod, the cost is about 14,000 per child per year. How is this different from home schooling . Its different because we provide professional teachers. We recruit them from all over the country. A lot come from private and charter schools. Teachers can make from 10 to 20 more than what the local average salary is. Reporter its an attractive model for parents, but one that could lead to fewer students in local School Districts unless funding for the children left behind and less funding for the children left behind. Our schools are more diverse than theyve ever been, but theyre still segregated. Our pods unfortunately can become more session gated. Lheureux lewis mccoy is a sociologist who studies educational inequality and worries about vulnerable communities including the estimated 17 million kids without highspeed Internet Access at home. The families that have more money are actually creating boutique almost privateschool environments for their children. You may have to cross the neighborhood, you may have to talk to a family that you havent spoken to before. But if you do that work, we begin the process of inclusion. Reporter do you feel like there could be the wave of the future as we try to navigate through this pandemic . Absolutely. So we really think that this is not just a solution for the present. We think that this is the best way for teachers to teach and students to learn. Were also working with some philanthropic groups to make sure that we have sponsor pods. And were also trying to work with with some state governments on offering pods through government programs. Reporter a complex problem that many parents are thinking about, including giulia arencebia. I think its a horrible situation. I wish it werent the case. I think that at the end of the day, i need to do whatever i can for my children. And frankly, if i can keep my children at grade level, then they wont need service thats can go to another child. By taking care of my children and their needs in some ways its helping everybody. Reporter for cbs this Morning Saturday, meg oliver, new york. One of two million issues created by coronavirus in schools. Weve talked about this as parents, about how each district is handling things differently. Its tough. I understand. On september 16th, 1920, a bomb delivered via dynamite and horsedrawn carriage in loaner manhattan killed 38 people and seriously injured 143 more. Within a minute of the explosion which occurred just outside the offices of famed financeer jpmorgan, trading on the New York Stock Exchange was suspended to prevent a further panic. The carnage was unlike anything americas largest city had ever seen and was splashed across headlines for days. As those who survived were treated, the investigation began with an immediate focus on several radical leftist political groups. Even before the wall street explosion there had been nationwide rage on communist headquarters. A result of the general belief that bolsheviks were plotting to overthrow the government. Reporter anger over capitalism and wealth inequality. It was also about the imprisonment of two men who had been erroneously convicted of murdering a guard while carrying out an Armed Robbery near boston the year before. At first investigators were puzzled and considered it not an act of terrorism since no wall street businessmen were killed. Instead, street workers, vendors, and clerks, many on their way to lunch. It was noted that the statue of George Washington just across the street escaped unscathed. So did jpmorgan who was vacationing in scotland at the time. Eventually attention shifted back to disgruntled communists and anarchists watch a focus on mario buddha, a longtime acti activi activist. He left the country think long after. In the end, no one was ever formally convicted of this heinous crime. Today the only evidence that remains from that tragic event are from these shrapnel marks on the facade of jpmorgans old building. There was a desire to reopen wall street as quickly as possible. Show believe that important evidence got washed away after. Think about that, we just had the story about 9 11 and the men behind it have not been prosecuted yet. First, our top story dozens of residents are mittsing in oregon as about 100 wildfires burned there and across 11 other western states. The fires are blamed for at least 19 deaths this week as the inferno rips through california, washington, and oregon. It is in oregon where there are fears that two large fires could merge, forcing nearly half a Million People to leave. Thick smoke filled with ash from the fires can be seen as far north as canada. That combined with more than three million acres consumed in california has the governor there describing the wildfires as a climate emergency. Danya bacchus is in Central California this morning. More than a million acres in the west ravaged and scorched so far, and a fire season thats not even half over and is taking a tragic toll. The magnitude of which is still unknown. The number of deaths is rising, and there are still dozens of people missing. Oregon officials are now bracing for a mass fatality incident as the flames move closer to portland saying there is a possibility they will not have enough resources to try to handle the dead. Dont settle for silver gold bond champion your skin he sold more than 170 million books including one of our alltime favorites, the pillars of the earth. This week ken follett is out with the evening and the morning an epic tale about the world emerging from the dark ages. It is again signature follett, full of history, architecture, scandal, and memorable characters. From outside london, we spoke to follett about the evening and the morning as well as the groundbreaking work hes done in years past. Sometimes people say i had given up on reading. And i hadnt read a novel for 20 years, and then somebody gave me the pillars of the earth and said youve got to read this book. Youve really got to read there book. I enjoyed it so much that its got me reading again. Reporter ken follett speaks with grand yosity of the pillars of the earth which was turned into a miniseries. I dont take kindly to priests who steal. So do legions of its riders who find the combination of storytelling and history a magical experience. Now follett has traveled across the uk to put together the evening and the morning, his prequel to pillars which opens with a savage viking conquest. Theres a mystique about vikings that i think people are fascinated by. You make clear quickly in this book that these are not the good guys. People think the vikings are sexy, and i really dont. They were murderers, thieves, and slavers. They would just the worst people that western europe. To write the evening and the morning, follett studied the comic book version of what life was look at the end of the dark ages. They didnt have docks if you wanted to board a ship. You hitched up the skirts of your tunic around your waist, and you walked through the shallow water. Reporter if the information wasnt available, he got creative. For example, i did everything i could to find out what underwear people wore in the dark ages. Or perhaps none, but perhaps some. And nobody knew. So i made something up, and thats what you have to do. Reporter as usual in his fiction, follett has embraced strong characters from all sides. Some books appeal more to men, and some books appeal more to women. One of the things about your books is i think theres its always cut across those lines. That was the goal i assume with this, as well. Well, absolutely. And when i was writing my First Successful book, a spy story called eye of the needle, halfway through the planning process i changed the main character from a man to a woman because everybodys, you know, ten thrillers about two guys. And it made the story much more interesting. Reporter a decade after eye of the needle, pillars became an even bigger publishing phenomenon. In part by leaving almost nothing out of bounds. Youve never shied away from the carnal aspects of life in your books. Why is that . Its partly because i and my readers like the carnal aspects of life. There is a literary reason, as well. Theres often in a novel, theres a love story in which two people are crazy about one another but they cant be together. And whatever the reason, thats the story. If two people meet and fall in love and get married and live happily ever after, its not a story, is it . If you have had these two people for 200 or 300 pages looking at one another over a crowded room, wishing they could be alone together, wishing that they could kiss but not being allowed to kiss, and then finally comes the moment when they can be together, theyre alone together, they can do all the things that theyve been dreaming about for the last 300 pages, then its only fair to the reader that we should go with them just for a little way at least into their paradise. Theres no king, theres no queen, theres no law in this land reporter folletts epic, ancient tales have never been easy to transfer to television, but that hasnt stopped filmmakers from trying. When do we see the evening and the morning on a screen . Wouldnt that be nice . It would be an expensive show to make, but i can just see it. It opens with a big, dramatic action scene. Im hoping hollywood will love it. The evening and the morning, he is fun to talk to i love him. Even just describing the carnal nature, i was like, what . Like i was there. Its crazy. Hes fun to talk to, and hes a master storyteller. He is a character. He is. Bravo. Such a great story. Well, a little different interesting gentleman. He built one of americas top retail chains. He says he used the same principles actually to transform and build two sports teams. Its the same spirit blank has brought to all of his businesses over the past 40 years. An empire that included the home depot, the falcons, and the Atlanta United soccer people, pga super store, and family philanthropic foundation. Tuesday his book good Company Comes out, a guide to business and life. I went beyond the words on the pages, spending time with blank at his guest ranch in montana. The open space of montana with its Scenic Vistas and majestic trails is both home and escape for arthur blank. What do you love about this . Well, i love the quietness of it, the spirit of it, the beauty of the west. Everything kind of slows down a little bit out here. Its a spectacular place to be. Reporter and he says this is one of the best ways to see it. At 77, blank is the driving force behind the multibilliondollar blank Family Businesses and can use that change of pace. Its a place where you can almost do meditation, reflect, soul search, you know, think about life, think about purpose. Reporter blank has been reflecting quite a bit lately. The result is his new book, good company, which details his life and businesses, all built from the same set of core values. Where do they come from . I think they come from, you know, your life experiences, your family, your friends, your religious experiences, everything that you do. Reporter he writes about his modest childhood growing up in queens, new york, with his parents and older brother. We lived in an apartment, had a single bedroom which my brother and i shared. My mother and dad slept on a a pullout sofa in the foyer. Reporter he was raised with the jewish tradition of sadaka, philanthropy and righteousness. My mom, she was always involved in the community. She was always involved in giving back. Even though we had no money really, truly, to speak of. And one of my favorite expressions was that principle matters, principle matters. It does matter. Reporter a lesson blank learned at age 10 when he and his family were robbed in their home. The robber was sitting in the living room, and my mother was giving him a lecture. Truly, a lecture he had a gun. Finally i remember him saying, mrs. Blank, will you shut up . That was looking back, its kind of funny. But the serious lesson is that even under that pressure, my mother felt the need to tell this guy this is really not the way you want to live. Reporter molly blank would step up again after her husband died when arthur was just 15. My mother at 37 went into a business that she had no experience in at all and ran it and did a great job of it, built it up, and eventually sold to a company where i met my parenter, bernie marcus. Reporter blanks partner in launching home depot, opening two stores in 1979. They wanted it to be a place worthy of their employees or as they called them associates lives. With a singular focus on making the customer happy. The assets are not on the balance sheet. The assets are the customers, the people we served. Theyre always right. I love 190,000 associates out there for making this dream come are true reporter blank would stay with home depot until 2001 when it had grown to more than 1,000 stores. The next year, he bought an nfl franchise and used home depot values to retool it. When you took over the falcons and you were trying to figure out what do i do, whats the first thing i do, you went to the players. I did. Reporter they asked their new owner for a homefield advantage. Half the crowd was there to cheer for the visiting team. I called the commissioner and said were going to sell season tickets for 100. High said, what did you say . Were going to sell tickets for 100, 10 per game. We did it, we sold out the entire season in two, 2. 5 hours. Reporter is that doing the right thing for business, or is that just doing the right thing for your team . The right thing to make sure we had diversity in the building, to make sure the fans lived within a quarter, half mile of the building could get into the building. The voice of a fan whether hes paying 10 or 10,000 doesnt make a difference. Players can hear the energy. Reporter in good company, blank also addresses the hard times. He calls learning of the michael vick dogfighting scandal one of the worst days of my long career and writes, to this day, i cant reasonably explain losing super bowl li, when his falcons blew the 283 lead held late in the Third Quarter to the patriots. Blank watched it unfold from the sidelines. What i want the players to know, win or lose, im not off sitting in my suite, drinking my fifth cocktail, whatever it may be. Im down there with them, side by side. Reporter no matter what . No matter what. That includes the super bowl. Right after that game, my my mind went to how do i help heal. I mean, ill eventually heal myself reporter have you healed yet . Yes, we never fully heal. Reporter its even harder when youre Close Friends with patriots own robert kraft. The super bowl ring with 283 diamonds in it, 283, come back and won the game. I said, you know, why did you have to you know, you it will me you love me, i love you, like brothers. And awe reporter stick the knife in a little deeper. That lives with me. You want to go back compete, et cetera, and hopefully get a different result. Reporter blank did get to celebrate the next year when his Atlanta United captured the 2018 mls championship. All that youve accomplished, do you have moments where youre like, oh, my god, wow . Yeah. I always have those moments. Reporter his latest venture is the west creek ranch back in montana. Unlike the forprofit mountain sky guest ranch, he bought west creek to offer nonprofits a free gathering space to grow ideas, and blank believes in the end its all intertwined. Sounds so simple. Treat everybody right, and then it will come back to you. But im sure people say, come on, that blanks full of it. Like he its about money, but it really isnt for you. No, it is about money, too. Capitalism is a beautiful system. It produces opportunity, you know, economics, it produces jobs, it produces security. But the be all and end all cant be how much money im making. If you focus on doing the right things for the right reasons, the profitability will come at the end of the day. Reporter in life as in business, blank is committed to walking the walk. Hes pledged that 95 of his fortune will end up with his foundation and redistributed to society. After our ride through mountain skys property, we ended up at the pavillion where blank and his daughter kiley served pie to his employees and a few friends. Its a ritual usually performed for guests except this year because of the coronavirus. What is it about that action that is importance to you . Well important to you . Well, number one, the pies are really good. This is huckleberry its important for guests to say, well, crap, hes the owner, digging pies out. You look for opportunities to set really good examples as a role model. You do it a parent, you do it as an owner of a business, whatever it may be. Reporter it is also the embodiment of good company. The end of the book you talk about legacy. That youre in the business of Human Happiness. This intangible but invaluable increase in Human Happiness is the legacy that i hope to leave. Yeah. Thats exactly right. Its not just happiness and how often do we smile, its happiness in that are we living a meaningful life. Im living the most purposeful life that i possibly can, and so im proud to be able to continue living that way and as long as i possibly can. And that purposeful life, the charity, the philanthropy, i have to say with each business, he allows them to direct money where they want to go. So the falcons may decide heres our direction, and in montana they have other causes because theyre the ones who will know best. For the record, cherry and banana cream pie was what i had. Absolutely delicious. That was beautiful and interesting and awesome. The book cool thank you. The book really is fascinating, and it isnt just for business. It is also a lesson in life and how to live your life. The idea that his mother taught him about principle and his father, too. Its heartening to hear a leader and someone as accomplished as he is thinking about how he relates to others and his impact on those people and on the world. So really fascinating do it right first, and the money follows eventually after. Right . I love the bills, but its hard to dislike the falcons. No that story and greg merman producing that, a yeomans effort. Gm, great job. Pro football oops, i was so excited about it. Our first sunday. The regular season is in full swing tomorrow.
