Week. But darren is here to tell us about that. One challenge at a time. First lets take the excessive heat. Im going to show you some daytime highs that are a lot more impressive in 100. When you hit 100 in San Francisco, that stands out. We shattered the record for today which was 92 set back in 1904. Weve only hit 100 degrees in the city of San Francisco 12 times since we started keeping records officially back in the 1870s. And of those 12, nine of them have been in september. This is the most likely time were going to do it. The hottest temperature weve hit in San Francisco since the 1870s is 107 and we did that on Labor Day Weekend three years ago. This is our time of year you te impressive numbers now. 111 in livermore. 111 in santa rosa. All the red ones with asterisks next to them. All of them are records. And just to show you how far above records we were, you can see the difference there. Tomorrow gets a little better. But when the numbers are this high, a little better doesnt really mean much. Were going to be a couple degrees cooler tomorrow. Weve still got an excessive heat warning. Im going to talk to you about that in detail coming up. And theres a lot of smoke out there now. Some of this is coming from that creek fire. A lot of it is just from the local fires, the fires from big sur have been throwing smoke our way. The spare the air day goes through tomorrow. It will probably be extended. Much more on all of that coming up in the complete forecast in a few minutes. Taking a live look outside, you can see no matter which direction you go, theres no escaping smoky skies. A record breaking spare the air alert continues tomorrow. Judging by the huge plume being pumped out by the creek fire, kpix 5s devin fehely shows us it will be no surprise if it is extended yet again. Reporter the smoke that has blanketed bear area hillsides for the past three weeks has had triple digit temperatures and smog. A layer of unhealthy air that should have you thinking twice to head out to exercise. We havent really ridden in a while. Thats why were excited today to get out there. Reporter jennifer and her friends started their bike ride early in the morning to avoid both the midday heat and the bad air. The air Quality Management district is warning the public about. We expect to have unhealthy air quality due to ozone. Thats a little bit different than whats been happening for the last three weeks where weve been enduring smoke. Reporter he says the remnants of the fires around the bay area as well as a brand new wildfire in Fresno County could worsen the already smoggy conditions. He says the poor air quality is of special concern for children and the elderly, and people with asthma, allergies, and other respiratory conditions. Ozone is a powerful lung irritant that is something that can affect you depending ong r y the middle of the day. Reporter a simple precaution that can protect your lungs and health longterm. We dont want to risk our health. So if the air is observe a certain level, then we dont want to hurt our lunshz. Reporter monday will once again be a spare the air day. Thats 21 days in a row, three weeks straight of bad air. In san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. Heres where things stand now in the creek fire. What started friday night, about 6 00 p. M. , has now exploded across more than 45,000 acres in fresno and madera counties. There is zero containment. Weve seen a number of dramatic escapes and rescues from the fire zone. Well show them to you in a few minutes. Theres no word on how many buildings have been destroyed. At least 3,000 are threatened. And theres a fire advisory for parts of yosemite. Closer to home, crews are making Good Progress against the three major fire complexes circling the immediate bay area. That includes the second largest fire in state history. The seu complex east of san jose is now 88 contained. The only slightly smaller lnu complex is 89 contained. To the south, the czu complex in the Santa Cruz Mountains is 64 contained. Crews have been setting backfires. That is 93 contained. But Point Reyes National seashore remains closed until further notice. Now to the state 4 grid so far managing to meet demand on this hottest day of the heat storm. Later this week, pg e might have to start cutting power on purpose as changing winds ramp up the fire danger. Kpix 5s betty yu on what that could mean for everyone trying to work and learn from home. The worst of the dangerous weather conditions has not yet moved through the bay area but a psps watch is in effect for tuesday and wednesday. Thats when those winds are expected to pick up. Reporter 48hour notices have already gone out to customers who could be affected by this latest psps. Parts of all bay area counties except San Francisco are included. We have worked, the last year, to enhance the psps program for our customers. And it will be shorter, smaller, and smarter. And one of those things is shorter. We expect to restore customers twice as fast. Reporter pg e says calling of psps is a last resort to ensure the safety of the community. Were an upstairs condominium. And its an oven. So if wereco were tro. Wer tkingalutwe wt even have. So we would have to leave our place. Reporter having dealt with extensive power shutoffs last fall, many east bay residents we spoke with at the walnut creek Farmers Market say they know the drill. Preparing, getting Important Documents together. Making sure we have all the paperWork Together. Just planning our different tactics. Putting together a list of things we have to get together. I have a small generator at home so if the power goes out, i can at least power our refrigerator. Actually have created like a getaway kit of food in case there are things like earthquakes which i suppose could be used. Reporter the power shutoff may come at an unfortunate time this year when many people are working from home and also relying on technology for distance learning. Because we work virtually. We need the internet for all communication right now and for meetings, for paperwork, for document writing. Without electricity, i couldnt get online. Were definitely affected. I work from home and ill lose my air conditioning. I think it depends how long the power outage will be, whether i lose food or not. Reporter the Contra Costa CountyFire Protection district is also prepared. It has already closed in two extra engine crews. As wildfire resources on hand to take on the extreme heat, low humidity, and high winds. Those three things for us add up to red flag, red flag high fire danger conditions. So were always on alert when fire conditions are riskiest. Theyre about as risky as you can get across the east bay. Emergency officials are reminding residents to sign up for text alerts so you get the latest information from your county. Pg, and e also says since its website was overloaded last fall, its since enhanced it to handle more online traffic. In lafayette, betty yu, kpix 5. Stay with kpix for the coverage on the continuous heat. On the website youll find links to the power situation, air quality, closed beaches, and open cooling centers. The hayward fault reminded us it represents the biggest threat to the people here when it popped a couple small quakes today. It struck san leandro a quarter to 12. Eight minutes later a 2. 6 in the same area. One twitter user said, just felt a small earthquake. Saw my tv wobble and my dog stared at me. Make it stop. Another wasnt sure what it was at first, tweeting, i thought it was somebody moving their car in the garage, but no, it was a small quake. A third added, california is going through enough. Hold the quake, please. Still to come, from the ground to the air, incredible images of the narrow escapes from the creek fire zone. I think if we had stayed just 10 minutes more, we might not have been so lucky. Plus, a burning man celebration on the beach prompts a heated response from San Franciscos mayor. A stunner at the u. S. Open as an apparent temper tantrum takes out the top seed. A reminder, kpix 5 has a new app for live 24 7 access to our newscast and cbsn bay area. You can download it from a app store or google play and just search kpix. A fast moving fire that broke out in San Diego County this weekend doubled in size overnight. They now more than 5,000 acres and just 1 contained. Within a half hour, it just exploded and came up to almost where it is right now. And it just the intensity of the heat is just crazy. And in San Bernardino county, the El Dorado County is prompting mandatory evacuations near yucaipa. More than 3,000 acres have burned and the fire is just 5 contained. Theres incredible images of a daring escape from the creek fire in the central sierra. Watch. Holy those campers were trying to escape the flames when they quickly realized the only road out was straight through. Oh, my god. We made it. I think if we had stayed just0 minutes more, we mightnot. We did run into a ranger. She was able to lead us up to the point of that spot fire and it was actually per her instruction that we drove through that fire. They werent the only ones who escaped the fast moving flames. 224 campers in Mammoth Pool Reservoir, 25 miles southwest of mammoth mountain, were trapped and had to be rescued. 63 of them were airlifted out. Rescuers say two were severely injured and 10 others in that group were hurt less badly. Two more people opted to stay behind. And a look at whats happening above the fire. Satellite images capturing those massive clouds of smoke, reportedly reaching up to 50,000 feet high. Actually i texted darren that picture this morning. It said get a load of that and you responded, hard to look at. I guess thats what every fire is going to look like this season when it takes off. Death valley hit 130 today. Whats really wild to me, were only 15 degrees behind that. Thats a really good point. Its crazy. You look at the numbers behind you. Yikes. Thats where i want to pick up because i showed you the records at the top the newscast. Lets me pick out a couple other neighborhoods, show you where we were today, and then well move on because im going to show you whats coming. San ramon, 108. Pleasanton, 110. Fremont, 104. 108 in san rafael. Lets get down toward san jose. San jose hit 105. In the north bay, some of the highest numbers here. 111 for santa rosa. Thats out at the airport up there. 109 in sonoma. 110 in napa. A lot of smoke in the air right now. Weve had a lot of our own for a while. Were pulling in some smoke from that creek fire. A lot of that is really elevated. The rest of it is just kind of getting recycled here every day. We cant really catch a break. As a result, we can look at the air quality but it hasnt changed much and the story is so familiar. When you get into those deeper shades of orange and red, youre getting into the unhealthy for sensitive groups and flat out unhealthy. Its one thing to look at an hourly reading but you need to consider this is over two weeks of air quality like this. Thats also Something Else that needs to be taken into consideration. The duration of days in a row where youre breathing in air of this quality. You really want to start considering ways to limit your time spent out in this as much as you can. Because theres no end in sight at this point. Theres nothing significant to come in here and blow the air out of here. I think we should really be preparing ourselves for that. Keep our fingers crossed. But theres nothing significant coming our way. Not in the nearterm. To improve the situation. So once again, tomorrow weve got a spare the air. And weve long since shattered the record for the number of days in a row that weve done that. This map is actually morning lows. I know theres a lot of orange and yellow on it and theres a vast majority of the year where this would be daytime highs. But those are morning lows. Mid 70s tomorrow inland. That gives us a big head start to go to places like these numbers. Now, yeah, these numbers are a little lower than today. But only by a couple degrees. So san jose, youre going back to 102 tomorrow. Sunnyvale hits 100. N suntcityio 98. , 109 tomorrow for concord. 110 for livermore. Theres no improvement here. If you want to talk about two degrees cooler, thats a technicality and thats all we got. Keep that in mind for monday. This is still our third day of this long Holiday Weekend where people just want to get out and enjoy themselves. But you are really going to have to factor this stuff in. 105 for santaanwere going to tt 109 up in ukiah. No surprise. The excessive heat warning still in place. Stays in effect until monday night at 9 00. It was 100 today but tomorrow well get a little more onshore flow for the city. Well be able to get back down hopefully into the low 90s tomorrow. For that excessive heat warning, youre not going to get much help at all. All the places out here. Since weve gotten closer now, the National Weather service has changed the terminology. Its more imminent. The risk hasnt gone away. Weve changed it to the red flag warning. The focus is going to be on the north bay mountains. And in the east bay hills l. The areas we know so well are most at risk when we see the winds come from the bay area in the northeast. This pattern is shifting in good ways to help with the heat wave. You can see the clockwise circulation over us. Nats how weve gotten our heat wave. That breaks down over the next few days. We get a dip, a little bit of a trough here. Thats good news because it cools the temperatures down but the trough is going inland. This is the first one of the fall. Far more impressive. Watch how they race over the mountains in the north bay hills. They dry, they compress, they warm up. Everything we dont want the wind to do. Thankfully these are like 45mileperhour gusts which this is not good but it can get a lot worse than that. So something to at least be aware of and in the 7day forecast when the winds kick up, well also break the heat wave and finally bring the temperatures back into the low 90s if youre inland. Thats 70s degrees above average. More on this coming up in the next half hour. Straight ahead in sports, top seed bounce from the utah open but it may not be how you think. No one is immune from spreading the virus. Weve heard people may return tonight. Dont do it. Kpix 5s kenny choi with a look at if they did come back. No burning man parties going on beach to get relief from the heat wave weve seen in parts of california including in San Francisco and the bay area. The major difference today versus yesterday is that these parking lots are closed off right now and you have Law Enforcement here enforcing those closures. Take a look at some of the video from last night. More than a thousand people gathered at the beach, having a large party. Neon glow sticks everywhere, dancing and a large party. Most people celebrating what would have been the 34th year of burning man, the annual gathering in the desert of nevada. That prompted the mayor to do this, to close all the parking lots down today, parking lots in the area shut down for the remainder of the Holiday Weekend. Golden Gate National park service monitors this area. They have jurisdiction. They tweeted around 11 00 this morning that ocean beach was at capacity. Taking a live look at ocean beach right now, you can see there are a lot of people gathered here. Plenty of social distance for those away from the water. Cdc guidelines stating theres lower risk outside of the beach when theres six feet apart. Medium risk when you dont have much distance and higher risk when its packed. You can see theres some space. Of course the sun is about to set in a couple hours so there arent as many people here as there were this afternoon. But bottom line, common sense. If you choose to come to the beach, you want to keep your six feet apart and also have those masks on according to the cdc. Ive talked to several epidemiologists over the last eight months covering covid. Theyre saying these outdoor settings are not really the ones theyre most concerned about. Its those indoor gatherings with friends and family inside in homes especially on Holiday Weekends like this one that theyre concerned about and of course weve seen some spikes after those Holiday Weekends in the summer. People who do come here, they are finding parking nearby at neighborhoods and as you can see just right across the street. Well see what happens tonight if there are large gatherings once again here at ocean beach. Were live in San Francisco. Well keep check on it. Before you go, i know you frequent ocean beach as a surfer. Are you surprised at how warm its been today . Is it finally cooling off a little bit where you are . Elsewhere in San Francisco, people seem to be doing a pretty good job keeping their distance this Holiday Weekend. As you might expect, the coveted spots under the shade trees at delores park were the most popular places to be. Challenges persist at oaklands lake merit. Some neighbors have been complaining about big crowds who say theyre just trying to survive. Kpix 5s john ramos has both sides of that story. So as this group vendors along oaklands lakfe merit an o example of the black entrepreneurial spirit . Or is it a city not enforcing its own laws . That all depends on who you ask. Reporter this row of vendors set up alongside lake shore avenue has been operating for several years without a permit to be here, but the city seems to accommodate them, even blocking off traffic in front. They made it like a sellers row. I dont know who started it, invented it. But they started it off and this place is positive. Reporter people here say its giving folks a way to earn money during hard times, and that includes the Williams Brothers who made 79 yesterday selling cookies. I had really fun on my first day when we got hecka money. And there was only one more cookie left and somebody took it. Was that you maybe . Maybe. Reporter but the People Living in the housing across the street say theres another side to the story. The vendors row has become a Gathering Spot and after hours, when the sun goes down and the police leave, it can become deadly. This video, taken from his apartment, shows what scott and his neighbors have been enduring since 2018. He says the noise, crowds, and open alcohol sales are being ignored by the city. In fact, the neighbors have been told the city is considering a Pilot Program to make the vendors area permanent. All the problems continue. So why would you then create a Pilot Program for people who are, if not all of them, some of them are creating those problems, then give them your blessing to continue doing what theyre doing. Thats the American Dream. Why you all trying to shut down the American Dream . But those who live next to it say this American Dream can become a nightmare without some kind of rules, and theyre waiting for the city to do something about it. Enforcement has become a dirty word here but were not asking for teargas and rubber bullets. Were asking for the maintenance of civilized behavior. Reporter in oakland, john ramos, kpix 5. Its exactly what some cities in colorado are expecting later in the week after extreme heat this weekend. Temperatures in denver could drop 60 degrees for monday into tuesday. The forecast for tomorrow is in the 90s for denver and on tuesday, in the 30s. Thats one big cold front. Powder in september is exciting for some. For others, it could be devastating. My passion is to grow this stuff for people to eat and to see beautiful things destroyed, its really painful. You just arent necessarily expecting this much cold. Kind of wish those canadians would keep it to themselves. Some parts of the state possibly hit record highs today. Tuesday temperatures could be hitting record lows. Not the case out here. I suppose that low thats going to plunge over into colorado is not going to help. In fact, its going to hurt us. Were going to feel it. Thats going to be such an unbalance of the atmosphere. When we get to monday night and tuesday as theyre getting their snow, the wind is going to pick up in our mountains. Its all tied together. Thats the red flag warning. Well get to that in a second. First, look over my shoulder. This is the view from the top of the Sales Force Tower looking off toward the east. Its kind of difficult to really say what smoke came from where when youre surrounded but looking off in the east, some of that smoke at the higher levels is coming from the creek fire. If we switch this over, let me refresh that view. Ive got the labels on there. I want you to see the actual smoke. You can pick out wree are. Theres sacramento. Thats all smoke coming off the creek fire which is burning down there. This is now the big monster fire thats making all the headlines, at least as far as Northern California is concerned. The biggest, nastiest one in the state right now. And all that smoke coming off of it is going to spread throughout the state. Theres a plume of smoke there. Thats coming up from a fire in big sur. Thats the one that started to inundate us last night. Look over here. Its subtle. But theres smoke here coming down from the august complex which is burning just off the screen there in the coast range to the west of the sacramento valley. Thats been going for weeks. Were surrounded. With that complex, lets take a closer look at that. The radar is actually able to read the plume of ash thats being lifted into the atmosphere by the fire. Thats how much there is. We can actually take that and read how high its going. If we look at it from a slightly different angle, i know the numbers are small. See this line right here . That is meeting up with 30,000 feet. In other words, as high as commercial airlines. Thats how high the ash is going because this fire is so hot, its throwing the smoke that high. Thats a great way to spread smoke throughout the state. As long as it continues to do that, were in this as far as the air quality is concerned. One more spare the air day tomorrow. Theres really not a whole lot of reason to believe these are going to end any time soon. You can start introducing a new term here. Smoke wave. Were going on well over two weeks now where weve had unhealthy levels of the particulate matter. If you look at the colorization, deep shades of red, study three years ago said on average, Northern California, you can expect about five to 10 days where you can consider yourself. Weve already blown past the projection which was put out to better understand this stuff three years ago. But this is an extreme year. Hopefully we dont do this every year. But the notion of this happening, think back to the last several years, how many times has it happened . Have a good air filter at home yet . Maybe this will inspire you to look into that because its going to help you longterm. As far as overnight lows, that would be daytime highs if you go back to late winter. These are the daytime highs tomorrow. Were going to see temperatures climbing up to 109 over here. Its just as hot pretty much. Technically its a degree or two cooler.
