At least 150 people trapped after a Massive Wildfire ick nights in the Sierra National forest. And tonight weve learned 63 campers near a Fresno County reservoir were just rescued by military helicopters. The others, told to shelter in place and to get into the water if they can. Until rescue crews return. Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for multiple communities. This is new video coming into the newsroom, showing just how dangerous the conditions are tonight. Two backpackers had to escape by driving through the fire. Thankfully they made it out. Firefighters in santa rosa are being sent to the Sierra National forest battle the fire. The bay area sweltering under a dangerous heat wave. And a recordbreaking string of spare the air alert is now in its third week. The first thing i want to do is show you where we were today. And then im gonna show you the records that are gonna fall tomorrow. With the first day of the weekend, look at the daytime highs. We were well into the 100s. Pleasanton, 103. 89 in San Francisco today. 98 for san jose. And the numbers were just as hot as you get gott up into the north bay. Now we need to take all those numbers and add anywhere from five to seven degrees on top of them. Because tomorrow, livermore, youre going 109. Concord 106. Santa rosa 106. San jose 103. And santa rosa was the only one that broke a record today. Were gonna break a lot of records tomorrow. Livermore, concord, santa rosa, and san jose are all gonna do it. But look at oakland and San Francisco. 91 degrees. May not be a record in downtown San Francisco. But its one degree shy. Its gonna be hot, bay area wide tomorrow. Ill be back with that. And well be talking about all that smoke coming off that fire burning in Fresno County today. Pressure is on. Temperatures are soaring. So is the pressure on the electrical grid. We were somehow spared from rolling power outages. But a flex alert is in place till monday. Customers are being asked to conserve power from 3 00 to 9 00 pm. Even if we avoid roaming blackouts this weekend, it doesnt mean were in the clear. Pg e is warning it might be forced to cut power next week for public safety. Thats because hot, dry offshore winds are in the forecast for tuesday and wednesday. So a psps watch is in. It would be the outage of its kind this year. Romano is a restaurant people come from outside of the city to experience, which is really wonderful. And im sure well get more of that with the weekend. But its a lot of locals too. We have a lot of regulars who come in every week. Reporter sunday is expected to be another hot day here in San Francisco with temperatures expected to be in the mid80s. The spare the air alert has been extended through labor day. Two peninsula towns are take a very different approach this holiday weekend. Pacifica decided to close their beaches to avoid large crowds. Just a few miles down south, Half Moon Bay decided to keep theirs open of the closures in pacifica are keeping some tourists away. And some Business Owners are having to pay the price. Holiday weekends are huge. Were making maybe a third to what we could be. And just the general weekend will still be down. I think people need to be outdoors. With covid, its the indoors that were worried about. And kind of the reason i wish they didnt close the beaches. Santa cruz has also decided to mostly close its public beaches for the long weekend. Keeping crowds from gathering is just one reason. The city also wants to make sure hotel space is kept free for wildfire evacuees who may still need it. With scorching temperatures and the threat of power outages, the demand for generators is so high right now, some bay area Hardware Stores can hardly keep up. Its already just a reflective heat. Its already so hot. Crews are making progress on three wildfires burning across the bay area. Both the lmu complex in the north bay, and the scu complex east of san jose are nearing 90 containment. The czu complex in Santa Cruz County is 64 contained. Last night, 6 45, 2,000 acres this morning. And it exploded in size today. Already 36,000 acres. Zero contame. Good news that were getting our fires here under control. Youre gonna see more smoke in the sky tomorrow. Look at the sunset, off in the distance. The smoke coming from the creek fire. That was the view here from home. Let me show you another view. Were gonna switch over to lake tahoe now. This is what it looked like. Beautiful day. And the late afternoon, all of the smoke from the creek fire overtook lake tahoe producing the sunset there. That is very dramatic. Ive gotta talk to you a lot about our heat wave. And im gonna into into a lot of detail here in just a moment about what to expect for tomorrow and monday. What happened today in the sierra, thats gonna be a major story. And that smoke trailing our way. We do have air quality concerns with the smoke thats here now. If we go through the next few days, the bay area air quality district has suspended the spare the air to monday. Now their focus is actually on ozone. In other words what weve been so concerned about and breathing in for the past few days has been smoke, particulate matter. The small, fine, particulate matter can get in our lungs. Ozone is very different. Weve got so much smoke elevated in the atmosphere. And with this intense heat wave, the heat actually turns that organic matter into ozone. And thats the stuff were concerned about breathing in in the next few days. Now weve got two issues for air quality to be concerned on. And on top of that, we have a significant heat wave to discuss. Let me get out of the way. I want to show you tomorrows daytime highs. These will be anywhere from five to seven degrees. Warmer than today was. And were gonna break a lot of records here. San jose. 103. 109 tomorrow in pals alto. Palo alto. 106 in concord. 109 in livermore. 106 in walnut creek. The 90s for the east bay. Still very hot to be right on the bay like that at 94. San francisco is up to 91. Novato, your temperature will climb tomorrow to 104. Santa rosa 106. And mendocino going up to 109. So makes perfect sense. Weve got an excessive heat warning that stays in effect until monday night. Monday wont be as hot as tomorrow. But its gonna be a little hotter than today was. We really have to get through the next three days. And once we do that, the focus is going to shift. Because the wind is gonna shift. Everywhere in yellow on here has a fire weather watch beginning monday night and going toed with. By the time weve gotten there. The pattern which has been driving our heat wave, if that big center of High Pressure breaks, we get into today, were gonna get some help with the cooldown. This area of low pressure coming into our east is gonna start driving the wind through california from the northeast. Bright colors in the sierra show very strong winds. A major concern for the creek fire. Thats a story for another time. If you come in for a cleanup look at us, weve got our wind issues here coming over the mountains of the north bay. And thats why weve got a fire weather concern and a red flag warning. Were gonna be talking about that too for tuesday and wednesday. It doesnt look like a major concern at this point.
