Go your own way your wireless. Your rules. Only with xfinity mobile. Now at 11 00 its going to get super hot this holiday weekend. Can the grid keep up . Tonight the plan to keep you from losing power. For the second time in four years, were tracking record High Temperatures. Were also keeping an eye on the air quality across the bay area. Tonight a delicate balancing act for those cities expecting the big beach crowds. We need to minimize exposure and keep everyone safe. So we are kind of just sitting here going what they are thinking is on the business side of it. This is not good for our local businesses. One week after vandals did this to the mayor of san joses home. What he just revealed to us tonight. Good evening im elizabeth cook. Im allen martin in for ken. Now at 11 00, streaming on cbsn bay area, a comfortable start to the holiday weekend, but thats about to change and change quickly. Record breaking temperatures are expected. Plus the potential power problems. But first chief meteorologist paul hagan with the scorching temperatures. It looks like the heat will peak on sunday. Thats the day well be setting a Record Number of High Temperatures, probably not in San Francisco, but just depends on exactly what the wind does. San jose is likely to tie a record of 108 in livermore by sunday. Breaking by five degrees in concord and livermore. Heat advisory kicks in on saturday, where temperatures will be into the 80s, even the 90s around the bay. Excessive heat warning. Not sure what will happen in our account, but the inland bay area is excessive in our heat warning that will start tomorrow and runs through labor day. Inland temperatures will approach 110 degrees in the warmest locations and the air quality will still be an issue. Troubled spots in the north bay right around the central bay on saturday and then into the east bay and the trivalley as well. The air quality might improve fractionally as we head through the rest of Labor Day Weekend. Take a look at the air quality forecast into early next week. A complete weekend forecast in a few minutes. Paul, thank you. The big question with this extreme heat though, will the power stay on . Or will we see rolling blackouts again . Tonight the race is on to crank out enough power to last us through the weekend. The governor issued aing probation, allowing power plants to create more energy than their permits allow. Cal iso was working to buy power from other parts of the western grid. Those other parts also had their heat problems to worry about. Generally at this point they arent willing to sell power until the last minute because they dont know if they need it for their own customers. If you want to cool off at the beach this weekend, many areas will be open, including San Francisco, marin, sonoma, and most of San Mateo County. However a different county in pacifica. Betty yu reports Business Owners are banking the customers will still come even though the beaches will be shut down. And tonight businesses, such as pacifica brewery had a great turnout for mostly locals. The owner hopes sales will remain strong through Labor Day Weekend as parts of the county will close the coastline to visitors. Virtually every table in the beer garden at pacifica brewery was full this evening. But come tomorrow when the city closes its beaches and parking lots for Labor Day Weekend, the owner hopes customers will still come. For people who are trying to get away from the smoke, trying to get away from their areas. It is not very welcoming for them to constantly say this is the third time. Were closing our beach. Reporter nearby Half Moon Bay is keeping their beaches open for this holiday weekend. Deciding they didnt have the manpower to enforce the closures. In the past people ignored them, strolled onto the beaches any way. And so we are kind of just sitting here saying what Half Moon Bay is thinking on the business side of it is not good for our local businesses. We are not going to close the beach. Im trying to understand why they dont think the same way. Reporter we met some locals who would take advantage of the state beach ahead of the shut down. Since i had school today and i finished all my homework early, we just wanted to go do something before it closed. I understand it because you cant guarantee people are going to be safe and safe distanced. Although because Half Moon Bay is open and pacifica is not, this will still be tremendous traffic. Reporter this evening traffic was moderate, and plenty of space on the sand. We need to minimize exposure and keep everyone safe. So i think it is wise because people, they tend to flock to the coast especially when there is a heatwave. Reporter that is exactly what san mateo supervisor is urging people not to do. When they flout these rules, it keeps us in purple tears. It closes our economy. Reporter in addition to Half Moon Bay, other beaches in San Mateo County will be open this holiday weekend. Neighboring Santa Cruz County will have limited hours at its beaches. In pacifica, betty yu, kpix 5. We have a complete list of what is and what is not open plus resources to help you get through the heatwave at kpix. Com. New at 11 00, someone has been arrested for vandalizing the mayors home. New tonight there will probably be a lot of family reunions this weekend. According to the chronicle, Nursing Homes in San Francisco will now allow visitors outside after forbidding them for months. The city reportedly updated its health order to allow one hour supervised visits, outdoors, or through cars, windows. The new rule only applies to the facilities that have not had a new coronavirus case in two weeks. 15 schools in marin county are reopening in person next week after being granted waivers. It comes as covid19 case rates and data improves. Health Officials Say all schools in the county could reopen in just a few weeks without waivers. It is not a decision that should be made lightly. I certainly appreciate teachers not wanting to contract it. My heart breaks for those kids who are not in school yet. Because as an educator and a mother, school is so grounding. School is so key to so many families lives. Three of the 15 schools granted waivers are public schools. The rest are private. Well tonight a leading covid19 model is making an alarming prediction. 3,000 americans could die each day over the next few months. Well the white house disagrees. Today President Trump says the country is rounding the corner on the virus. While the nations top Infectious Disease expert is concerned with new data trends. Our concern right now is that theres a number of states, particularly for example, the dakotas, montana, michigan, minnesota, and others who are starting to have an uptick in what we call percent positive of testing, which generally is predicted theres going to be a problem. New at 11 00, earlier this summer the pac12 canceled its 2020 football schedule. But tonight a new game plan is being considered. The pac12 had canceled all sporting events until next january, but now with this new testing option available, we could see College Football by next month. My first reaction was excitement. I want to get back out onto the field, and be out there with my teammates. Any hint of being closer playing a season is great news for everybody, especially for us players. Were all inching to get back out there. Reporter many athletes are celebrating the possibility of playing football again on saturday. Pac12 has partnered with clydell to offer test results in about 15 minutes. In an interview, pac12 commissioner larry scott talked about how this could impact the football season. That gives us near immediate results that will allow us to test daily, to give us a high degree of confidence that through the contact in sports, were not promoting a spread of the virus. Reporter each school in this conference will get two testing devices. With this system the athletes will be tested daily including before every game. Players are fully aware of whats at stake. We understand these are just unique times and we cant be selfish. We have to think about the bigger picture. Reporter they are keeping their fingers crossed that the testing method will let them play ball. I think just the fact were able to get efficient faster testing at an ideal and efficient time frame is huge for all sports. Reporter while this testing has been used in facilities such as Nursing Homes to reunite patients with families, this could help to further open up the economy. Experimenting with the Football Teams could pave the way to open up schools for kids and have workers return to their jobs. In berkeley Andrea Nakano kpix 5. California will exempt about two dozen more professions from that sweeping law requiring companies to treat workers as employees rather than independent contractors. Itll include many freelance journalists, independent musicians, insurance, and real estate inspectors, as well as consulting in animal services. Well new video to show you tonight of a massive homeless encampment thats growing by the day in san jose. The guy who captured it on camera wants to know what is being done about it. Here is what she discovered. Reporter city leaders say the pandemic right now is getting in the way of cleaning up encampments. This encampment in particular is growing not just because of the homeless. Old furniture, garbage. Reporter on monterey road near bailey avenue. I see more people, more garbage. No one ever addresses the problem. Reporter designs hartman captured this growing homeless encampment. It has become like an Illegal Dumping ground. I see people stopping throughout the day dumping stuff. We want the residents to know were on the case. Reporter Sergio Jimenez learned about the encampments several weeks ago. So why hasnt it been cleaned up yet . He says there are two reasons. What i do know and what i can say publicly, Union Pacific is very much aware of it. Reporter Union Pacific owns the property, cleaning up the encampments. The other challenge jimenez and the mayor says its not allowed unless theres a Public Safety issue. And normally we would go in and remove people, but thats not happening now. Thats what we have seen with the ramifications of that. So we are really focused on trying to get as many people housed as we can to thin out the encampments. Reporter but dennis says he wants more than just a clean up. It is sad for the people who live there. They need some help. Reporter the mayor says one benefit of the pandemic, more housing could be built quickly. Heat advisory for the coastal areas, but its excessive warnings for almost entire state, especially by sunday and monday and then that fire weather watch will kick in on monday evening. Goes through monday evening as the northeasterly breeze will kick in, gusting about 20 to 30 miles an hour.
