Stand tonight. Their strike against Racial Injustice. An unprecedented storm about to make a direct hit on the gulf coast. Now at 11 streaming on cbs and bay area, we begin with the breaking news out of oakland. Kpix 5s joe vasquez is live at the scene for us. Reporter im in downtown oakland near the Oakland Police station. There was a brief confrontation here between demonstrators and police but they are our heavy barricades and the crowd went in different directions. Right now they are in the grand lakes section. We saw some video online from a few weeks ago, fireworks being set off by demonstrators. Police have Just Announced an Unlawful Assembly which is in the precursor for arrests. Protests began at around eight a clock this evening. Several hundred people began marching through the streets of oakland to protest the shooting of jacob lake in wisconsin. It has been allowed demonstration. No violence, still quite a bit of vandalism. There are folks in the crowd protesting with shovels and other tools and began smashing windows in downtown oakland particularly along clay street. In some cases they even pulled plywood off the windows first and then hacked away at the glass. Most of this crowd were not committing vandalism, we want to make that clear. The anger among the demonstrators is palpable. Im angry as [bleep] because they shot a man is seven times in the back. Those racist [bleep] coming out of town shooting an unarmed person. I am angry, i am angry a very chaotic scene especially at the grand lakes section where the crowd appeared to split into two segments. At one point they went up on 580 and the highway had to be closed. At this point its not clear whether the police are able to make arrests or whether the demonstrators decided it was time to go home. It looks like there is an end to some of the activity anyway, as we speak. The action tonight in oakland comes on the heels of two bay area sports teams that canceled their games tonight. In response to the same shooting of jacob lake. Lets get some more for really and unprecedented day in sports. Reporter indeed, the boycotts and response of the shooting of jacob lake actually started this afternoon in the nba and trickle down throughout the sporting world, including Major League Baseball where three games were postponed today, one of them tonightslle minutes beforee first teams play w. Kepler was coach neil for the National Anthem saying that athletes need to use their platform to continue to speak out against racial and social injustice. We have a tremendous amount of influence because we work in professional sports. Every time a new story surfaces about racial inequality in our country, we have a great opportunity to talk about it. And we have a responsibility to talk about it on those days. Today is not the last day we will get to have the tough conversation and we should embrace it on a daytoday basis. Now that we have the opportunity to do so. The San Jose Earthquakes also postpone their game against the Portland Timbers in response to the jacob lake shooting. One of five mls matches called off on wednesday. The game was scheduled to be the first sporting event in Santa Clara County since march. A meeting was held with the remaining teams tonight at a Disney World Hotel inside the bubble to debate whether or not to continue the playoffs. It is quite possible weve seen the last of the nba playoffs inside the bubble we will know more about that tomorrow. Really something, whats been going on in the last 12 to 24 hours. We will check back with you. Thank you dennis. Tonight the warriors are saying we support nba players in taking actions designed to shed light and send a loud and clear message. Enough is enough. We are united in our stance against Racial Injustice. Athletes have often been at the forefront of the fight for social justice in the united states. Kpix 5s maria medina is live in san jose with a look at how drastically the conversation has changed in a short amount of time. Maria. Reporter well as dennis said, tonight the San Jose Earthquakes postponed their game. It is a show of solidarity weve never seen before in the sports world. And we certainly didnt see it four years ago. Our focus today cannot be the last of it. The movement started by the Milwaukee Bucks and spread quickly throughout professional sports leagues. The wnba, mlb and mls. Its very difficult to be heard until you have attention. Our athletes are now demanding attention. The san jose state assistant professor is also an Advisory Board member for the Universities Institute of the study of sport, society and social change and says the walkout today is historic. We know in our society there is also an power in name recognition but it remains to be seen just how historic it will be. My hope is there is strategic action behind this and there is a next step behind this. This is not the first time weve seen athletes use the National Spotlight to bring awareness to Racial Injustice and police brutality. Exactly 4 years ago today former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began his peaceful protest by taking a seat during the National Anthem. He was widely shunned by Many Americans and the nfl distanced themselves from the player. What Colin Kaepernick created, is that we dont have to revisit the moments as much as we did before. Now deeper and possibly progressive conversation can happen that wasnt done four years ago. Now we are starting to see the social consciousness and utake precedence over financial gain. Tonight we do not know how the nba season will end. In san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. In kenosha wisconsin protesters hit the streets for the fourth day in a row. Tensions remain high and that city in the wake of the Police Shooting their area the governor said he is working with other states to bring in Additional National guard members and law officers. Tonight a 17yearold is in custody in connection with last nights deadly shooting during the protests. Investigators say Kyle Rittenhouse shot into the crowd of demonstrators with a semi automatic rifle killing two people and injuring a third. Hes been charged with first degree homicide. Lets go on to our fire watch now where crews are upping containment on two major fires burning across the bay area this evening. Over the past few hours the scu complex has gone from 25 to 30 containment, the czu complex is now 21 contained. That is up quite a bit from earlier today as well. However, a setback for firefighters battling the lnu complex in yolo and colusa counties, the flames breaking free from the containment zone, jumping across highway 16 and threatening more homes. That has prompted new evacuation orders tonight the complex in the Santa Cruz Mountains with it winds and upth good news. And humidity crews are setting backfires to get as much of the few cleared as they can. There is no timeline for lifting evacuations. Lets go to our chief meteorologist paul hagan who has the latest on the all important air quality. Baby steps, still not great but day by day and sometimes even hour by hour, its getting a little less bad these are the current air quality levels, the purple has hundreds of centers all around the bay area, we still see some spots where the air quality is unhealthy, especially near san rafael, but for the trivalley and santa clara valley, where some of the worst air quality has been, you are now in the moderate category with few spots may be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Tomorrow is another spare the air day and the worst air quality will be for sensitive groups, but slowly we are heading in the right direction. The rest of tomorrows forecast coming up in a few minutes. Now to campaign 2020, Vice President mike pence accepted the republican nomination to serve four more years in office. He delivered a speech focused on law and order. Natalie brand is alive at the Nations Capital with more. Reporter the focus on law and order again tonight comes against the backdrop of these new protests nationwide in the wake of the Police Shooting in wisconsin. The Vice President did mention the protests but did not mention jacob lake. Vice president mike pence traveled to fort mchenry in baltimore, the inspiration for the starspangled and held the work of u. S. Military and Law Enforcement officers. President trump and i know that the men and women who put on the uniform of Law Enforcement are the best of us. The Vice President referenced kenosha wisconsin, the scene of new protests in the wake of the Police Shooting of jacob lake. The violence must stop, whether in minneapolis, portland or kenosha. He took time to comment on those facing the fury of hurricane laura. We urge all those in the affected areas to heed state and local authorities come and stay safe. As the head of the Coronavirus Task force, he defended the administrations response to the pandemic. The president took unprecedented action and suspended all travel from china, the second largest economy in the world. That action saved untold american lives. President trumps daughter inlaw continue the attacks on joe biden. Joe biden will not do what it takes to maintain order and keep our children safe in our neighborhoods and in their schools. To restore our american way of life. Now natalie, mike pence mentioned in his speech that death of officer Dave Patrick Underwood which was killed on the same night as recent protests in oakland but he seemed to apply the alleged killer was connected to the demonstrations. Well the man charged with officer underwoods murder is believed to be associated with the extremist antigovernment Boogaloo Movement and investigators believe that suspect actually took advantage of the protest to carry out the attack on Law Enforcement and exploit the demonstrations to incite violence and try to avoid arrest in the large crowds according to their investigation. And the suspect not only faces charges in that case but is also accused in a killing of a sheriffs deputy in santa cruz county. Important to note the most protesters at these demonstrations are there to protest and not cause violence. Natalie, thank you. Betty yu joins us now with more on who can be affected by this. Reporter sales and Customer Service support positions are among those being cut. According to bloomberg, the gains that salesforce is seen during the pandemic is telling a larger story. There is a greater divide between the rich and the poor. In many ways this moment is very humbling and also very bittersweet. Because, weve seen so many of our customers go through so much difficulty this quarter. But i think we can look at this quarter and look at everything that has happened with salesforce and we strongly believe business is a platform to change. Reflecting on the Cloud Computing companies send outperformance, record high revenue of more than 5 billion pushed its stock to what new alltime high today. Still salesforce is notifying about 1000 employees, less than 2 of the company, of layoffs. It is reallocating resources to create more growth. This is actually not a sign that anything is wrong with salesforce, in fact just the opposite. Salesforce is thriving as a company. The layoffs are simply because they are restructuring. Russell hancock says salesforce success is emblematic of the gains enjoyed by tech giants like microsoft. Although airbnb and uber have made big job cuts, the industry has fared better than others because employees can also work remotely. What happened after the pandemic, it became one between a thriving and surviving. So we now actually have people whose jobs were utterly dependent on Human Interaction and those jobs are being eliminated. Salesforce said it will give affected employees 60 days to sarch for a new job within the company. Employees can also work from home until august 2021. Some are being housed in hotels because of coronavirus concerns and shelters are filling up very rapidly. We hear that this is what worse than katrina. It is stronger in terms of windspeed, trina had lower pressure in the center of it. 920 millibars. This is tied for the strongest storm in terms of windspeed to hit louisiana ever recorded history dating back to 1850. It has officially made landfall, this is the satellite perspective, just a mean looking storm. You can see the bands of heavy rainfall and within the bands you often see tornado spinning up as the wind interacts with land and some of that rotation spins its way down toward the surface. We are talking about 100 mile per hour wind gusts and it will still be a category 2 hurricane tomorrow morning. Then it weakens and becomes posttropical, but it still will be a big old rainmaker for the Mississippi River basin. Once its that far inland we begin to evaluate whats left behind in Southeast Texas and southwest louisiana. For here, we have some good news, the good weather for the fire crews does continue. It will be near normal temperatures with higher humidity levels. In cooler temperatures for the rest of tonight and tomorrow morning. A little warmer into the weekend but it wont be out of control hot. Right now temperatures in the 50s across the board. 59 degrees in san jose and in concord, the fog has been hanging out throughout the day. And that will spread back across the bay into the inland valleys by tomorrow morning. The high humidity is associated with that, definitely good news for the fire crews. And then it should be mostly dissipating as we head toward noon. Later wind tomorrow, and the fog will back up toward the coast. Temperatures will start off in the 50s, slowly warming up. Once the fog clears out thats when temperatures start to boost a little bit. Still 50s along the coast by mid day with low to mid 60s around the bay and 70s and a few spots touching 80 degrees. High temperatures tomorrow almost exactly normal for this time of the year. Low 60s along the coast, upper 60s and low 70s around the bay, and the how to spots east of the diablo range. Temperatures jump a little more inland on friday, but pretty close to normal for the next seven days for inland portions of the bay area, just a little warmer around the bay and along the coast early next week as our winds will briefly switch to an offshore direction. But the good news for the fire crews does continue for the rest of tonight into tomorrow.
