Before they towed away that vehicle. Took it to the Coroners Office where the investigation into the cause of that crash continues. Well, ne, we looking at unhealthy air quality once again. These are the second and Third Largest wildfires in california history and officials are concerned because they have struck very early on in the season. As you heard. But the thing about this situation thats interesting is when it comes to the National Guard, this is a very different capacity than theyve ever been here on the fire lines. In fact my cousin is in the california National Guard. Hes in Southern California doing this. And has never done this before. That just shows you how thin our resources are stretched. But we begin with anne makovec at the live news desk and anne you just listened to an update on the fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Reporter a lot of positive news coming from this update. This is the fire that has been burning for more than a week. Right now theyre holding the numbers at 19 containment. And 538 strungtures have been destroyed. The vast majority of them in santa cruz county. 11 in san mateo county. And unfortunately, six people are still missing from the fire zone. Deputies have been going in there trying to find these people and follow up with what might have happened to them. So that is kind of the bad news part of it. The good news is that a couple of the communities davenport, bonny doon, are looking safe this morning. The part of the fire that was threatening Santa Clara County yesterday, that has been extinguished. And firefighters have built pretty strong perimeters protecting uc santa cruz and the city of santa cruz. Today they are working on building a barrier around felton and then ben lomond and theyre going into the areas trying to mop up the hot spots. But again, access is difficult. They have a lot of trees that have fallen over roadways and some of the wooden bridges have burned. But that is kind of what theyre working on today. As well as doing more air drops. Now that the air around the area has finally cleared. All right, lets check in with emily turner, she has the latest following the fires in the north bay today where there are still evacuations. Reporter also good news up hoar. Were talking about National Guard members. This is where theyre ultimately going to end up and they have a whole section ready to go for the guys. Now shift change has happened here in the last half hour or so. Lots of people piling into the fairground getting ready for that briefing here thats going to happen for firefighters at 7 00. Now after a week of running thin, National Guard members are going to arrive in order to provide help for these exhausted and overworked firefighters. Some troops in fact have already arrived last night but theres more of them arriving this afternoon. There will be about 260 of them in all. But unlike previous fires up here where weve seen them at evacuation checkpoints, making sure people dont go into the evacua theyre actually going to be instead, fighting fire. Theyre not trained firefighters though so of course theyre not going to be if the more dangerous areas like the front lines of the fire but they will be out in the field. Theyll be here in a support and also behind them there are more resources arriving soon. Originally in the incident resources were stretched thin. Weve since then had a significant number of additional firefighters added to the incident. Reporter and i think its pretty interesting to give you context that never before or at least not in the history of my time, covering these fires in california, has the National Guard actually been fighting fires. Instead, theyve been people the people who are there making sure that folks arent going into the evacuation zones or looting homes and theyre really more for a safety measure. Instead, now, theyre going to be fighting fires which shows you just how thinly spread californias fire resources are. And its very scary, firefighters say, for that to be happening this early in the season. Theyre hoping this is not going to be the tone for the remaindeofe. Veinan rosa, scnothe south and parts of the east bay, and Evacuation Order in parts of San Joaquin County has been reduced to a warning. And some warnings have actually been lifted.
