Great odonnell good evening. We are 71 days from election day and tonight the republicans begin presenting their case for giving donald trump four more years as president. Im Norah Odonnell in the nations cop toll and welcome to cbs News Coverage. Republican national convention. This convention will look different than years before. President trump will not have the packed arena nor the boisterous crowds he enjoys. Many of the speeches will be from an auditorium here in washington. But earlier today a few hundred delegates gathered in charlotte, in the carolina, where the roll call vote was held and President Trump was officially renominated. This is the most important election in the history of our country. Dont let them take it away from you. Odonnell tonight well hear from former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley, the president s oldest son donald trump, jr. And tim scott. Throughout the week i will be joined by our contribute ares and analysts, cbs news senior political an liss and 06 mince correspondent john dickerson, cbs news contributor maria elena salinas, President Trumps first chief of staff and rnc chierm Reince Preebus and for Hillary Clintons clintons 2016 campaign joel payne, welcome to all of you, so good to you have, let me start with you, john, President Trump will appear any minute now, we will take that, and he will appear every night as will a member of his family, is the party of lincoln now the party of trump . You wont be able to forget that this is Donald Trumps party it is almost like one of his buildings with his name on it, and it is not just because will be there every night, is he in everybodys mouth, this is not about the Republican Party t is about the party of donald trump. In our most recent poll almost 60 of voters identified as trump voters before they identified as republican. And the feel of the night so far and through the week feels like donald trump and feunlly when you look at the convention compared to the ones we have been to in the past where you have past president s, this is all doned a trump. Reince preebus, you worked priebus, you worked in the white house, is this about rebranding in some way the Republican Party and who is the part of the electorate that trump needs to improve with . Well, first of all, norah, there arent a lot of persuadable voters as we call them watching these conventions and what is really going on here is this is an election of 300,000 people if about eight states. Odonnell 300 million. But there are only 300,000 people that we can move in eight states. So what weve got here is the president trying to talk about compassion and talk about law and order. Because compassion and law and order speak to people in milwaukee, philadelphia, and the counties around pittsburgh, because that is where the election is at. Odonnell lets listen the president. In various countries and im very pleased to let everyone know that we brought back over 50 hoss tajes from 22 different hostages from 22 durch countries we worked very hard, and we are very proud of the job we did. But i would like to ask maybe pastor brunson to say a few words, to just give us a little history of what happened and how is life treating you. I was held in turkey for two years and. You took unprecedented steps, tully, to secure my release, and your administration really fought for me. And i think if you hadnt done that i may still be in turkey. Im very grateful. 28 years, right, they had you schedule ford a long time, we had to get you back. And i have to say that to me president erdogan was very good. Scheduknow they had you scheduled for a long time and you were a very innocent person. And he ultimately after we had a few conversations, he agreed. So we appreciate that. And we appreciate the people of turkey. And you still appreciate the people of turkey, i understand, right. I love the turkish people. Its great, its great to you have back, andrew, thank you. Please. Mr. President , thru for having me, im sam goodwin from st. Louis, missouri, held in syria for 63 days. And i think i speak for my fellow former hostages and detainees here when i say im as grateful as i have ever been for anything to be home safely and thank you for the inhave i taition and opportunity to be here, particularly pastor o brain was incredibly supportive and helpful to my family and cant say enough nice things about him, thank you for promotedk him and just really happy to be here, so thank you. He got you back. We got you all back and we have some more we are working on right now to get back, that we better do, please. My name, mr. President , mr. President it is an honor to be here and meet new person, basically what had happened with me is i traveled over the country of iran, turned out there was a major trap and i was app rehenned there. I went through a lot in their justice system, the it has been exoppressive, extortionist regime, what you did was able to get me out of that prison in record time trk was amazing. Thank you very much. The hoor was all mine. Please. My name is jash, we were held pyears. In venezuela for two i know very well. And you helped us get out, senator hatch worked on that as well and it was a great honor to be able to meet you right when we got back. I remember a lot of people asked what was it like to meet President Trump, i said i was blown away, just gotten released after two years and then shaking the hand of the president in the oval office, i dont really remember a lot of it, it is nice to meet you again, it is great to be back helping people through situations that theyve gone through and now we have to start a family. The great people of utah really wanted me to do something about the two of you. And we were able to do it. And little bit of a miracle i think frankly because that was a very hostile period. And we appreciate everybody working so hard with us. But we were able to get you both back. And are you living in utah now. We are still in utah. Say hello to the folks in utah because they are great people, thank you very much, congratulations. Thank you. Please. Brian, unexpected trip in india, i was not going to india, i was going through india to nepal but where i worked for the last 18 years but on behalf of my family and myself thank you, President Trump, for getting us us home. Getting us home. The darkest moment of our whole time together, your letter to my wife came. And it really gave her the hope and peace. From that time forward, its more people got involved, especially the ambassador there, in india, things became more peaceful and the hope was there for the last four months. That we with get to come home, they planned on keeping me for 35 years. The original charge thing was 35 years. And that was cleared and then they came up with new charges that was 7 year term. India responded very well to my request. So we appreciate that. I appreciate everything yall did. Thank you all for being with us. We have a few more people we get to get back and we will get th them become and they will be back very soon. Thank you very much. Appreciate it, great stories. Odonnell there the president of the United States highlighting a number of americans who had been held hostage overseas and were brought back through efforts of the trump administration. I want to bring in cbs news theaf washington correspondent m Major Garrett who is outside the andrew melon auditorium where tonights headliners are speaking, that is clearly an effort by the president to say this is something positive i have gotten done watch. About some of the other promises he made and promises he kept. So a quick disclaimer, this list will not be exhaustive. The white house has a much longer list than we will show you of promises kept and the Democratic National committee has a longer list of promises broken but the ones we will show you are the ones that will be litigated and part of the governing reality of the next president , whoever that might be. So the president reduced tax rates for individuals and corporations. He rebuilt and expanded the southern border wall. He also got out of the Paris Climate Accord and dropped out of the iran nuclear deal, he appointed and saw confirmed two Supreme Court justices and more than 200 other justices to the federal bench. On the not kept side of the ledger the deficit is higher, so is the national debt. Affordable care act remains and there is no Health Care Reform under republican banner. And also the president promised during the campaign i heard it over and over, mexico would may for the new board shall border wall thark hasnt happened. But what we heard is not only these promises made and kept but the way the president keeps his promises. Republicans saying his methods are tough but they are effective. Norah, back to you. Odonnell all right, major, thank you. Still ahead weve got speeches by nikki haley, donald trump, jr. And senator tim scott. Youre watching cbs News Coverage of the Republican National convention. You must go and i must bide but come ye back when su mom, dad. Whys jamie here . Its sunday. Sunday sing along. And he helped us get a home and auto bundle. Hes been our insurance guy for five years now. He makes us feel like were worth protecting. [ gasps ] why didnt you tell us about these savings, flo . Ive literally told you a thousand times. Oh, danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling im just gonna. From glen to glen she knew he had to hide the truth. But the mourning, gone, destroyed. When i watch the news in seattle, chicago, portland and other cities, when i see when i hear the promises, i hear echoes of a former life, i never wanted to hear again. I see shadows. My parents only wanted one person to decide my fate, me. Not some government official, not some bureaucrat. Odonnell and welcome back to our coverage of the Republican National convention. That is Convention Speaker cuban immigrant and florida businessman maximo alvarez. Lets bring back in our panel, maria ellen d drk maria elena, this is the antirass tro, anticuba, and this antisocialist message. I think what the republicans have been doing is painting the Democratic Party as socialists, it doesnt matter if Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren arent on the ticket they still want to categorize them as they are socialists. It really works well with the cuban americans, with the venezualaans, nix rog wants and nollive vans especially in florida but that is between the 20 and 25 of latinos that are already staunch republicans that will vote for any republicanment but then there are those who say it is only rhetoric. Especially in the case of venezuela because we dont see him offering any kind of temporary protection status, for example, or going against putin and pressing putin because of his support of maduro in venezuela. Odonnell i want to bring in joel payne, you studied this, all the different demographics trump woman in 2016 where he is losing ground today. Independents, suburban voters, collegeeducated white voters and seniors. Where do you see that map there with those different groups . Well norah, actually t is funny, i had a conversation with someone close to the biden camp today and they pointed those four groups out to me it is not just that the president won those groups in 2016. Mitt romney won them in 2012 and he is trailing in all four of those groups against joe biden. And i think that that just kind of belabors the point of what we were talking about earlier related to will the president use this as an opportunity to reach out to the middle. The president is very good at base politics but weve never seen an incumbent president not win reelection or rather win reelection without reaching out to the middle. You have to do a base plus strategy. You have to figure out if you are barack obama in 2012, how do you bring on republicans. You talk about balancing the budget and the deficit and you bring in someone like billdaley to be your chief of staff. George bush did in, reagan in 1980. President trump doesnt have any iterest in that. He is making a bet on himself and that his base is big enough and enthusiastic enough to bring him to victory. Well see if that is the case. Odonnell reince, were you talking about that, these groups of call color counties why is President Trump failing among the suburban communities this year. If you look at the issues on the table, before covid and coronavirus, i think the president was doing pretty well am but coronavirus came around, people are scared. But that is why you are going to see law and order, compassion combined and where i think the republicans need to build is on the compassion part of the law and order message. Building that up and then going back to what hersch herschel walk ared said, maybe you hit too hard once in awhile but that is what you have to do, and then back to compassion, nikki haley, tim scott, all those people you heard from, that is the formula for bringing the clar counties back collar counties back, shoring up your base and going into a close election. Odonnell speaking of nickeri haley, we may be seeing a preview of the 2024 cam pawn tonight as nikki haley addresses the Republican Convention. Lets listen am to the former governor of South Carolina. Im nikki haley and it is great to be back at the Republican National convention. I will start with a little story. It is about an American Ambassador to the United Nations and it is about a speech she. Ave to this convention. She called for the reelection of the republican president she served. And she called out his democrat you can opponent. A former Vice President from a failed administration. That ambassador said, and you quote, democrats always blame america first. The year was 1984. The president was ronald reagan. And ambassador jane kirk patricks words are just as true today. Joe biden and the democrats are still blaming america first. Donald trump has always put america first. And he has earned four more years as president. It was an honor of a lifetime to serve as the United States ambassador to the United Nations. Now the u. N. Is not for the faint of heart it is a place where dictators, murders and thieves denounce america and then put their hands out and demand that we pay their bills. Well President Trump put an end to all of that. With his leadership we did what barack obama and joe biden refused to do. We stood up for america. And we stood against ourenemies. Ama an north korea threaten america. President trump rejected that weakness and we passed the toughest sanctions on north korea in history. Obama and biden let iran get a which with murder and literally sent them a planeful of cash. President trump did the right thing and ripped up the iran nuclear deal. Obama and biden lead the United Nations to denounce our friend and ally israel, President Trump moved our embassy to jerusalem and when the u. N. Tried to condemn us, i was proud to cast the american veto. This president has a record of strength and success. The former Vice President has a record of weakness and failure. Joe biden is good for iran and isis, breat for communist china, and hes a god send to everyone abstain and abandon our values. Donald tump takes a different approach. He is tough on china. And he took on isis, and won. And he tells the world what it needs to hear. At home the president is the clear choice on jobs and the economy. Hes moved America Forward while swroa biden has held america back. When joe was vp i was governor of the great state of South Carolina. We had a pretty good run. Manu manufacturers of all kinds flocked to our state from overseas, creating tens of thousands of american jobs. People were referring to South Carolina as the beast of the southeast, which i loved. Everything we did happened in spite of joe bied enand his old boss. We cut taxes, they raised them. We slashed red tape, they piled on more mandates. And when we brought in good paying jobs, biden and obama sued us. I fought back, and they gave up. A Biden Harris Administration would be much, much worse. Last time joes boss was obama. This time, it would be pelosi, sanders and the squad. Their vision for america is socialism and we know that socialism has failed everywhere. They want to tell americans how to live, and what to think. They want a government takeover of health care. They want to ban fracking and kill millions of jobs. The they want massive tax hikes on working families. Joe biden and the socialist left would be a disaster for our economy. But President Trump is leading a new era of opportunity. Before communist china gave us the coronavirus, we were breking economic records left and right. The pandemic had set us back but not for long. President trump brought our economy back before and he will bring it back again. There is one more important area where our president is right. He knows that Political Correctness and cancel culture are dangerous. And just plane wrong. In much of the democrat you can party it is now fashionable to say that america is racist. That is a lie. America is not a racist country. This is personal for me. I am the proud daughter of indian immigrants. They came to america and settled in a small southern town. My father wore a turban, my moth err wore a saru. Way a brown girl in a black and white world. We faced discrimination and hardship. But my parents never gave in to grieveance and hate. My mom built a successful business. My dad taught 30 years at a historically black college and the people much South Carolina chose me as their first minority and first female governor. America is a story that is a work in progress. Now is the time to build on that progress and make america even freer, fay fairer and better for everyone. That is request it is so tragic to see so much of the Democratic Party turning a blind eye towards riots and rage. The American People know we can do better. And of course we value and respect every black life. The black cops who have been shot in the line of duty. They matter. The black Small Business owners who have watched their lifes work go up in flames, they matter. The black kids who have been gunned down on the playground, their lives matter too. And their lives are being ruined and stolen by the vile dsntto. It wasnt like this in South Carolina five years ago. Our state came face to face with evil. A white supremacist walked into Mother Emmanuel Church during bible study. 12 africanamericans pulled up a chair and prayed with him for an hour. Then he began to shoot. After that horrific tragedy, we didnt turn against each other. We came together, black and white, democrat and republican, together we made the hard choices needed to heal. And removed a divisive symbol peacefully and respectfully. What happened then should give us hope now. America isnt perfect. But the principles we hold dear are perfect. There is one thing i have learned, its that even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in america. Its time to keep thatblessing alive for the next generation. This president and this party are committed to that noble task. We seek a nation that rises together, not falls apart in anarchy and anger. We know that the only way to overcome americas challenges is to embrace americas strengths. We are strifing to reach a Brighter Future where every child goes to a Worldclass School chosen by their parents. Where every family lives in a Safe Community with good jobs. Where every entrepreneur has the freedom to achieve and inspire. Where every believer can worship isthout fear and every life is protected. Where every girl and boy, every woman and man of every race and religion has the best shot at the best life. In this election we must choose te only candidate who has and who will continue delivering on that vision. President trump and Vice President pence have my support. And america has our promise. Wewill build on the progress of our past and ununlock the promise of our future, that future starts when the American People reelect president donald trump. Thank you, good night and may god always bless america. Odonnell and there is the former tboffer in of South Carolina, nikki haley talking about when she took down the Confederate Flag in South Carolina after the shootings there at the ame church. We are expecting to hear shortly from President Trumps eldest son donald trump, jr. Good eveningk im dn ald trump, jr. Were here tonight to talk about the Great American story. To talk about this country we nof promise and opportunity, of heroes and greatness. Just a few short months ago we were seeing the American Dream become a kreelt. For more of our citizens than ever before. The greatest prolonged economic expansion in american history, the lowest Unemployment Rate in nearly 50 years. The lowest Unemployment Rate ever for black americans, hispanic americans, women, and pretty much every other demographic group. And then courtesy of the Chinese Communist party the virus struck. Te president quickly took action and shut down travel from china. Joe biden and this democrat allies called my father a racist and xenophobe for doing it. They put Political Correctness ahead of the safety and security of the American People. Fortunately as the virus began to spread the president acted quukly and ensured ventilators got to hospitals that needed them most. He delivered ppe to our brave front line workers and he private sector to tackle this new challenge. There is more work to do, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Jobs gains are outpacing what the so called experts expected. But bidens radical left wing policies would stop our economic recovery cold. He is already talking about shutting the country down again. Its madness. Democrats claim to be for workers but theyve spent the entire pandemic trying to seek a tax break for millionares and democrat states into the covid relief bill. Then they attack my father for suspending the payroll tax for middle class workers. In fact, if you think about it, joe bidens entire economic platform seems designed to crush the working man and woman. He supported the worst trade deal in the history of the planet. He voted for the nafta nightmare. Down the tubes went our auto industry. He pushed for tpp, good buy mnufacturing jobs. Beijing biden is so weak on china that the Intelligence Community recently assessed that the Chinese Communist party favors bied en. They know biden also wants to brung in more Illegal Immigrants to take jobs from american s. Tizens. His open border policy was drive wages down for americans at a time when low income workers are getting real wage increases for the first time in modern history. Is he has pledged to repeal the trump tax cuts which were the biggest in our country. After eight years of obama and bidens slow growth trumps policies have been like rocket fuel to the economy and especially to the middle class. Biden has promised to take that money back out of your pocket and keep it in the swamp. That makes sense though considering swroa biden is basically the lochness monster of the swamp. For the past half isnt ree hes been lurking around in there. He sticks his head up every now and then to run for president. Then he disappears and doesnt do much in between. So if you are looking for hope, look to the man who did what the failed o bma Biden Administration never could do and built the greatest economy our country has ever seen. And President Trump will do it again. We will be stronger than ever because when we put our mind to it there is no obstacle that america cant sur mount. Except there is a difference. His time. In the past both parts believed in the goodness of america. We agreed on where we wanted to go. We just disagreed on how to get there. This time the other party is attacking the very principles on which our nation was founded. Freedom of thought, pree dom of speech, freedom of relheffson fi have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. Our founders believed there was nothing more important than protecting our god given right to think for ourselves. Now the left, they are trying to cancel all of those founders. They dont seem to understand this important principle. In order to improve in the future, we must learn from our past, not he raise it. So were not going to tear down monuments and forget the people who built our great nation. Instead we will learn from our past so we dont repeat any mistakes. And we will work tireilessly to improve the lives of all americans. Joe biden and the radical left are now coming for our freedom of speech. They want to bully us into sub mission. If they get their way, it will no longer be the silent majority. It will be the silent silenced majority. This has to stop. Freedom of expression used to be a liberal value. Tt least before the radical left took over. Now the Republican Party is the home of frea speech. The place where anyone from any background can speak their mind. And may the best ideas win. People of faith are under attack. Youre not allowed to go to church. But mass chaos in the street gets a pass. Its almost like this election is shaping up to be church, work and school versus rioting, looting and vandalism. Or in the words of biden and the democrats, peaceful protesting. An arcuses have been flooding our streets and democrat mayors are ordering the police to stand down. Small businesses across america, many of them meun or the owned are being torched by mobs. The democrat mayors pretend its not happening. They actually called it a summer of love. And that brings me to another important principle, every american must be free to live without fear of violence in your country, in your community, and in your homes. All men and women are created equal and must be treated equally under the law. Thats why we must put an end to racism. And we must ensure that any Police Officer who abuses their powers is held accountable. What happened to george floyd is a disgrace and if you know a pis officer, you know they agree with that too. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that our plition are american heroes our police are american heroes, they deserve our deepest appreciation, because no matter what the democrats say, you and i both know when we dial 911 we dont want it going to voice mail. So de defunding the police is in the an option. Everything starts with safety and security. You cant have anything else without it. You cant focus on building a Better Future for your children without the peace of mind that they can study safely in their classrooms. Play safely in their neighborhoods and sleep safely in their beds. But safety is only the gunning. Trumps america is a land of opportunity, a place of promise. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that could afford the best schools and finest universities. But a great education cannot be the exclusive right over the rich and powerful. It must be accessible to all. And thats why my dad is proschool choice. That is why he to help minorities in underserved communities, instead of bowing to big money union bosses, they let parents choose what school is best for their kids. They limit immigration to protect american workers. They support the police who protect our neighborhoods. They lea tneotiate trade deals that prioritize americas interest for a change. They end the endless wars and quit sending our young people to solve problems in foreign lands. They would cut taxes for families and workers. Tey create opportunity zones that drive investment into inner cities. And otherwise, if democrats cared for the forgotten men and women of our country they would do exactly what President Trump is doing. America is the greatest country on earth but my fathers entire world view resolves around the idea that we can always do even better. Imagine the life you want to have, one with a great job, a beautiful home, a perfect family. Ou can have it. Imagine the country you want to live in, one with true, equal opportunity, where hard work pays off and justice is served with compassion and without partial yallity. You can have t imagine the world with evil of communism an radical islamic terrorism are not given a chance to spread, where heroes are celebrated and the good guys win. Yo life, that is the country, that is the world that donald trump and the Republican Party are after. And yes, you can have it. Because unlike joe biden and the radical left democrats, our party is open to everyone. It starts by rejecting radical who want to drag us into the dark and embracing the man who represents a bright and beautiful future for all. It starts by reelecting donald j. Trump president of the United States. Thank you and god bless america. Odonnell and the speech there from donald trump, jr. Talking about using the word safety safely, and pawnting a picture of what another four years with his father as president of the United States would be like. Were going to talk to our panel about that speech, also just ahead, the nights headliner, South Carolina senator tim scott. Well take a short break. You are watching cbs News Coverage of the Republican National convention. Id like to tell you about my greatgrandmother. My grandma. My cousin. My greatgreat grandmother. She was all of 411 but very tenacious. A very independent woman. Driven, passionate. Embodied grit, perseverance. She marched. She wrote. She demanded. She was proud to pass on a legacy of civic mindedness to her descendants. Im very proud to carry on her story. All her story find their stories. Make them count. At ancestry. Were all doing our best to keep each other safe. At walmart, despite everything thats changed, one thing hasnt, and thats our dedication to you and our communities. Were working together, instore and online, through pickup and delivery, to safely get you the essentials you need. Everylets skip the rinse. Waste up to 20 gallons. Claritind improves nasal airflow two times more than the leading allergy spray at hour one. [ deep inhale ] claritind. Get more airflow. Odonnell and welcome back,s about to hear from senator tim scott, the only black republican in the u. S. Senate. Were abouting to hear from him in just a moment. Lets check become in with our panel. And reince, you ran the rnc. We just heard from the governor, former governor South Carolina nikki haley then done all trump, jr. What do you think their message was meant to do tonight . Its got to do three things. You have to de fine your opponent, de fine yourself and energize the voter. Energize the volunteers, energize your base. So those three things are happening. So with donald trump, jr. You are de fining your opponent. You are talking about safety, youre talking about what is happening out in the streets and are you talking to those suburban voters. Nikki haley, trusted voice, compassionate vois voice, diverse voice, someone who took down the Confederate Flag, led lieu a shooting and trusted all that compassion comes through nikki haley. Odonnell and yet john, both senator scott and tboffer in hale aye have broken with this president in owe kaigs. Nikki haley gave a response stot president of the United States in january of 2016 to the democratic president and used it to attack donald trump. She said his tone was wrong, she said the loudest voices in the room arent necessarily the best. Sometimes you have to tone it down. When he said the election would be rigged in 2016, she said he was wrong. When she took down the flag what is really interesting is she was flag in soutrindking do the beuse it aesiwellhe president ts supporting has now defended that flag as a part of history. So she has traveled quite a road to come to the convention tonight, all this that reince mentioned were built in a different kind of Republican Party. Again it is a sign of how the Republican Party has really moved to be Donald Trumps Republican Party. Odonnell but the significance of ending the first night of the Republican Convention with the Republican Partys most powerful black republican in the senate is not lost on many people. And i think many are looking forward to what he is going to say tonight. Right. Odonnell and. You couldnt have the Republican Party as democrats defined it that would have tim scott speaking in last. Tim scott from the great state of South Carolina, to all of you tuning in and participating in the political process, god bless you. This isnt how i pictured tonight. But our country is experiencing something none of us envisioned, from a Global Pandemic to the deaths of george floyd and Breonna Taylor, 2020 has tested our nation in ways we havent seen for decades. But regardless of the challenges presented to us, every four years americans come together to vote. To share stories of what makes our nation strong and the lessons we have learned that can strengthen it for further generations, because while this nald trumps between donald trump an and joe biden, it is not solely about donald trump and joe biden. It is about the promise of america it is about you and me, our challenges and heartbreaks, hopes and dreams t is about how we respond when tackling Critical Issues like police reform, when democrats called our work a token effort. And walked out of the room during negotiations. Because they wanted the issue more than they wanted a solution. Success or a culture that cancelled everything it even slightly disagrees with. I know where i stand. Because you see, i am living my mothers American Dream. My parents divorced when i was 7 years old and we moved in with my grandparents into a twobedroom home with me, my mom and brother sharing a room and one bed. Oy mom worked 16 hours a day to keep feed on the table and a roof over our heads. She knew that if we could find the opportunity, bigger things would come. I thought i had to use football to succeed in life and my focus on academics faded away. My freshman year i failed out. I failed four subjects, spanish, english, world geography and even civics. Trust me though, after seven years in the senate, i know im not the only one in congress who iciled civics. But even while i was failing the 9th gradek my mother always said to me timmy, if you would just shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will be among the stars. She never lost faith in me even when i lost fate in myself. Because of her encouragement, i went to Summer School and caught up. The next year i met my mentor john linice, a chickfila operator. Swron saw something in me that i could not see in myself and started teaching me valuable life lessons. Like having a job would be a good thing but creating jobs would be even better. That having an income could change my lifestyle but creating but creating a profit could change my community. He planted the seeds of what would become opportunity zones. This initiative that the president and i worked together on is now bringing more than 75 Million Dollars of private Sector Investment into distressed communities. I took those lessons to heart and started putting the pieces of my life back together. I realized a quality education is the closest thing to magic in america. Thats why i fight to this day for school choice. To make sure every child in every neighborhood has a quality education. I dont care if it is a public, private, charter, virtual or a home school. When a parent has a choice, their kid has a better chance. And the president has fought alongside me on that. Later in life i started my own Small Business. This why i know it is critical for us to have a tax coe tht encourages growth. We actually saw revenues to the treasury increase after we lowered taxes in 2017. Rest assured the democrats do not want you to know that. After starting my small eusiness, and spending some time on local government i decided to run for congress in 2010. The district is based in charleston, South Carolina where the civil war started. Against a son of our legendary senator, strom thurman. You may be asking yourself, how does a poor black kid from a single parent household run and win in a race crowded with republicans against a thurman. Bcause of the evolution of the southern heart. In an overwhelmingly white district the voters judged me not on the color of my skin but on the content of my character. We live in a world that only wants you to believe in the bad news. Racially, economicically and culturally polarizing news. The truth is, our nations arc always bends back towards fairness. We are not fully where we want to be. But i thank god almighty we are. Ot where we used to be. We are always strifing to be better. When we stumble, and we will, we pick ourselves back up and try again. We dont give in to cancel culture or the radical and fact allly baseless belief that things are worse today than in the 18 60s or the 19 60s. We have work to do, but i believe in the goodness of america. The promise that all men and all women are created equal. And if you are watching tonight, im betting you do too. Over the past four years we have made tremendous progress towards that promise. President trump built the most inclusive economy ever. Seven million jobs created precovid19 and two thirds of them went to women, africanamericans and has panics. The first new major effort to tackle poverty in a generation, opportunity. We put hardearned tax dollars back in peoples pockets by cutting their taxes, especially for single parent households like the one i grew up in, cutting single mothers taxes 70 on average. President trump supported these tax cuts for those single moms and other working families and signed these polszees into law. And our nation is better off for it. So im going to ask you, the American People not to simply look at what the candidates say but to look back at what they have done. This election is about your future. And it is critical to paint a full picture of the record of donald trump and joe biden. Joe biden said if a black man didnt vote for him he wasnt truly black. Joe biden said black people are a mono lithic community. It was joe biden who said poor kids can be just as smart as white kids and while his words are one thing, his actions take it to a whole new level. In 1994 biden lead the charge on a crime bill that put millions of black americans behind bars. President trumps criminal Justice Reform law fixed many of the disparities biden created and made our system more fair and just for all americans. Joe biden also failed our nations historically black colleges and universities. Keep heaping blame on them as they fought to ensure our young folks had access to higher education. Once again, to clean up swroa bidens mess, President Trump signed into law historically high funding for hbcu as well as anbill to give them permanent funding for the first time ever. And now joe biden wants to come for your pocket books. Unless of course you are a blue state millionare. Im serious. That is one of their solutions for the pandemic. They want to take more money from your pocket and give it to manhattan elites and hollywood moguls so they get a tax break. Republicans, however, passed President Trumps once in a generation tax reform bill that lowered tacks for single moms, working families and those in need. So when it comes to what joe biden says he will do, look at his actions, look at his policies, look at what he already did and what he didnt do while he has been in washington for 47 years. Ladies and gentlemen, people dont always see those failures because they think were having a policy debate on two sides of an issue. That is not what is happening. Our side is working on policy, while joe bidens ready kal radical democrats are trying to permanently transform what it mens to be an american. Make no mistake, joe biden and Kamala Harris want a cultural revlation, a fundamentally different america. If we let them they will turn our country into a socialist utopia and history has taught us that path only leads to pain and misery, especially for hardworking people hoping to rise. Instead we must focus on the promise of the american journey. Know that journey well. My grandfathers 99th birthday would have been tomorrow. Growing up he had to cross the street if a white person was coming. He suffered the indig fit of being forced out of school as a third grader to pick cotton. He never learned to read or write. Yet he lived long enough to see his grandson become the firs africanamerican to be elected to both the United States house and the United States senate in the history of this country. Our family went from cotton to congress in one lifetime. And thats why i believe the next American Century can be better than the last. There are millions of families just like mine all across this nation full of potential seeking to live the American Dream. And im here tonight to tell you that supporting the republican ticket gives you the best chance of making that dream a reality. God bless you, and father, please continue bless the United States of america. God bless. Odonnell tim scott, the republicans most powerful black lawmaker in congress, delivering a compassionate message about where donald trump what take the next four years. Lets go back to chief washington correspondent Major Garrett who is outside the melon odd torious auditorium, what did you make of his remarks. Why were nick ill hayey and tim scott chosen, to try to de fleck some of the worst ampregs that i that independents and suburban Republican Voters think about the president , focus group, certainlily headquarters show they tuned out the president , they are exhausted approximate by himk tim scott and nikki haley said lets take trump out, think about your own future, cancel culture and law and order. Republican county polls tell them those issues are central to what decisions those againendents who have turned against President Trump and those suburban republicans will make. Those two voices tried to pull that message together talking trump out of it but putting the policies front and center. Odonnell joel payne, though tonights remarks by either of those two law make ares and former lawmakers win over any democrats . I doubt itnd look, i doubt it was designed it do that. As i said before, the republican strategy here is to heat up debate. It is really not to reach out. A couple of things i want to point out. One, tim scott gave a very impassioned speech, he talked about Breonna Taylor and george floyd. He didnt mention jacob blake which is curious to me, that is in the news today. Many of your viewers will probably know that is the wisconsin man shot in ken owes kenosha, wisconsin, by police in the back seven times, very similar to a number of other Police Involved shooting we have heard of. From my perspective not just as a democrat or political strategist but as a black man, if a party is trying to speak to me that feels like an opportune moment to show that kind of compassion. To demonstrate that something wrong happen the. And that the president and that his party cares about that. So that was a curious oversight on my part. Odonnell it is interesting, reince, on that point, not mentioning what is in the news from your hometown in kenosha what happened to jacob licee shot allegedly by police se seven times in the back, you can ime in the video, but also tim sc scott, i mean he has said he has been pulled over 18 times. He even changed his license plate to have senator on the back so it might signal no the to pull him over. He counseled the president , the president has taken down a tweet, after charlottesville and the comnts the president made there, where not slair those types of stories tonight. Well, i thought tim scott did a magnificent job. I think he is what is great about our country. I think he should be the pollster senator for this president and help him to ictory in to 20 if he 2020 if he can. Sut highlighting the spirs accept back, criminal Justice Reform, 350 million to hpcu he to help historically black colleges and universities, black and his pan you can unemployment numbers precoronavirus, and opportunity zones all subject that i dont think the president feels he gets a lot of credit for and that is what tim scott did tonightk back to the compassion, back to the suburban voters. I didnt hear maria elena a lot about covid19 or coronavirus which has disproportionately affected africanamericans and latinos. Exactsly. Didnt talk about now but in the first hour which we didnt air but the first hour of the convention there was a lot of talk about covid19 and sort of like saying everything that the president has done. Now we heard donald trump, jr. Did talk about that and said my father made sure that every hospital had ppe. He called it pp e. But that is a bit of an inaccuracy because as we know, President Trump told states fend for yourselves, figure out how to get that ppe on your own, but you are right, the whole evening left out latinos and African Americans that have been the most affected by coronavirus. The president interviewed people on the front lines fighting covid earlier in the 9 00 hour. So i dont think it was completely left out of the program. But just between 10 and 11 o 00. But the president s leadership will be judged on his response to covid, you agree. I think it will be judged and i dont necessarily agree that he let the states out on their own and didnt provide any pp e. The ventilators were put there, the navy ship was there, there was no ventilator problem. I mean come on, i think it is a little oversimplification. Governor hogan has said they were left without federal teadership on the issue when it comes to mask and protective gear. Thanks to everybody. We appreciate it.
