It covers almost 500 square miles in napa, sonoma and surrounding counties collectively it is 15 contained at this hour. But, nearly 700 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Just hours ago new evacuations were ordered west of highway 101. Including a small sen within the city limits of healdsburg. A little while ago we found people packing up their bags and their cars to leave ahead of a new round of unsettled weather with the potential to shift winds in any direction. Wilson walker is to the south of healdsburg near windsor to begin live team coverage. Reporter this is one of the spots that is now included in the mandy ts of changes today, changes in the wind, changes in the evacuation pattern and you can see it right there. Visibility pretty bad around most of this fire today until really the last hour and a half. As the winds have started to push things in a different direction, clear the skies a little bit and you can see the resulting plume from the fire drifting a little more towards the north. That is one significant change. As you have been mentioning, there are real changes ahead. We talked with cal fire about how they are managing all of this. For the last several days we have been working on it with the wind moving out of the north northwest. It now will come out of the South Southwest and push to the north northeast and the focus will be on this side of the fire, everything from the west side of 101, after geyserville and down through healdsburg. I hear they are starting to evacuate people in windsor. Up and down the western side of 101, this was another day to know your evacuation zone. We just hope we can get through the next three days and come out okay on the other side. These areas have been under an evacuation warning for days but now is the time to clear out with the anticipation that the fire crews will be moving in. Our main concern is for them and their safety and to get out of their way so they can do their job. Cal fire has been laying the groundwork for this job. Over the past two days weve shown you the heavy air attack complete with the supertanker in the areas northwest of healdsburg and west of geyserville. Essentially the air show thats been taking place on the north side of the fire, it is essentially preparing for this. What is harder to prepare for is the approaching weather and the possibility of more lightning. The struggle right now is where the system will move through exactly. Not only the lightning but the weather conditions that come with those thunderstorms. Youve got down drafts and wind on the front end and backend of the system. All of those will potentially play into how we operate and what our rarities are over the next several days. Youve seen firsthand the progression of this fire, youve been up there for four days, so what have you been noticing in the time in terms of the mood and sense of urgency . Well, it sort of changes day toda that this thing had changed the dynamics a little bit. You can feel it out here. All those folks on the west side of 101, ive been there for two days when that was just a warning zone. Those were the people lined up on the road watching the airshow from cal fire knowing that the fire was threatening the greenville area, spots up in the hills. Like cal fire they knew this was an eventuality, that the circumstances would change in danger could come that direction. So when they got the word coupl days to think about it and they were ready to go. They had several days of warning that this would come. And when you and the weather coming tomorrow. You heard it from cal fire specifically, the uncertainty is really picking up again, not just here, but down and santa cruz and a cross over in napa, everybody is kind of holding their breath right now for what the next 24 to 48 hours will bring and what things look like when that is all over. The crews have less than 12 hours to fight before a red flag warning takes effect. We are tracking the incoming storms, and they could be the perfect storm so to speak, and stable enough to produce lightning but not wet enough to produce any meaningful rain. And then the wind which will probably be the biggest concern out of all three of those. Lets start off with the real timeframe of maximum concern. That will be sunday evening through monday morning. I will show you the red flag warning in a second. It actually starts sunday morning and goes into monday afternoon. But its really this. Where the best of the ingredients look to be coming together again for a 30 chance of dry lightning, not enough rain with that lightning, but read the bottom line, it is that gusty and erratic winds that could be the biggest concern. As these storms come in, the thunderstorms, or just the very nature of them throws a lot of wind down on the ground. We had this happen last week and, and the wind was experienced across the bay area but they didnt make headlines because there were not buyers to be fanned. Now in this scenario, these storms can create their own chaos because there is no known direction. All the stuff we were hearing from wilson is about the general wind flow, with these thunderstorms you cannot do that at all, it is just erratic chaos and very strong in any direction. That will really be the concern. Thats why weve got the red flag warning. The whole time period goes from 5 am tomorrow until 5 pm on monday. But it will be sunday night through monday time period, because the what is coming again. Leftovers from the Tropical Storm. When i checked back in with you we will look at that in more detail as it works its way toward us. By the time weve gone to sunday night we are looking at a few more isolated thunderstorms. But we will zoom in on that, slow it down and see what the latest forecast models have to say about when, where, if these thunderstorms will come together. I will see you with that in a few minutes. We are getting a fresh look at the damage from the czu lightning complex raging in Santa Cruz County. This video from the Boulder Creek area where more homes went up in flames this morning. The fires footprints stretches from San Mateo County to Santa Cruz County where most of the firefight is taking place. Reporter you know, for the residents and firefighters, it is so deflating to see the fire destroyed more homes this morning. Thats why they are celebrating those Little Victories when they can save a home or a business. A small spot fire turned into a big threat for the Sequoia Retreat Center this morning. Flames surrounding the property. About a dozen volunteer firefighters spent a few hours to put it out. Some residents who refuse to evacuate also jumped in to help. To make the ben loman Fire Department has been up here along with their onsite manager who has been fighting fires appear for four days, and we were pretty much on our own for a while, couldnt get cal fire up here, so theyve been coming up quite often, and they helped us all day yesterday. We saved a lodge and about 20 cabins below. A small victory after flames destroyed multiple homes in nearby Boulder Creek. It is a roller coaster, a roller coaster. We find hope and then we see devastation. Fastmoving flames chase this family out of their bonnie doon home. They are staying at a hotel and not sure if they will have a home to go back to. We are all in shock, i think thats the word. Some hotels are filled with evacuees, they are among the 77,000 residents that fled the Santa Cruz Mountains. At a nearby Evacuation Center roughly 70 people are staying at the civic auditorium. It is full and they go through a coronavirus screening process and Temperature Checks and each person has a tent. Mentally, its terrible. We stand to lose everything we have, along with the pandemic its like a double whammy. Many evacuees are trying to stay positive. Im just happy to be alive so i try not to dwell on that too much. But im seeing from people helping one another is bringing tears to my eyes more than it is the possibility of losing my home. You were in felton, and its been evacuated, so im curious about two things, help far away are reinforcements and can you see where the plume of smoke is from the main fire they are worried about . Reporter it is hard to see that active flames because the smoke is so thick you can barely see what is behind some of the trees, visibility is very poor. In terms of reinforcement, just before 5 00, six engines from the la county Fire Department came in as i was driving in. I saw a fire crew coming in from the state of washington. So firefighters from other states are coming in, but residents are saying still not enough, and not fast enough area they say we need reinforcement right now, not tomorrow, not two days from now. They are calling for the national guard. You saw some of those folks who refuse to evacuate. They are jumping in to try to work on their homes or their neighbors homes. Which is not something the Sheriffs Department or firefighters would recommend, but they are just desperate. They want to save their homes, which is understandable. There are about 1100 firefighters up in the Santa Cruz Mountains right now, but there are so many homes up here and residents say they need a lot more people to try to guard those homes. Da lin in felton, thank you. There is a new push to make more space for all those coastal evacuees, and the city is warning beachgoers to stay away. Also coming up, and up close firefighters willingly walked toward to protect the rest of us. A cornered crew gets an emergency airlift in the nick of time. And its a list the bay area ever wants to land on. They just earned a dubious distinction. Kpix 5 is proud to be working with the red cross in the massive scu complex burning in and around Santa Clara County is now the Third Largest wildfire in state history right behind the lnu fires in the north bay. In marin the woodward fire has forced the closure of the national seashore, including all park roads, trails and campgrounds. The lightning sparked blaze has burned nearly 2500 acre since tuesday and it nearly killed a pair firefighters as the flames pinned them on a ridge. Help from above arrived just in time. Reporter these tense moments happen friday night in the firefight at Point Reyes National seashore. Two marin county firefighters got caught on a ridge surrounded by fire and unable to escape. We were up there scouting the bulldozer lines to contain the fire. And while they were scouting the fire began to encircle them. The Sonoma County sheriff says thats why the Department Helicopter was called in to help. The crew was able to rescue the man in the nick of time, flames just 75 yards away. They were unharmed and happy to be out of there. But for moments like this, the helicopter is one of the several items they can use but is on the chopping block thanks to budget cuts. We know what kind of amazing tool this is and yet we are in a budget pinch this year. The cuts would eliminate about 14 million from that Sheriffs Office budget, the biggest hit of any department heard and while operating helicopter isnt cheap, the sharp hopes videos like this will prove that this resource is invaluable. If it had not been for henry 1 these could have been lost. It runs about 600 missions a year and about a quarter of e two ds in a row. Just the leftovers of the Tropical Storm which was meaningless for the pacific until it started to get caught up. But it is another Tropical Storm. But even with that, its already decayed. But im gonna start the forecast with some good news. There is some momentary good news, take a look at the map in detail. This is the right now condition across the bay area. You know the drill, you get into orange, red and purple, thats what you dont want to be breathing varied southbay rejoice, right now theyve got some moderates and thsoh yoyou into orange which is showing unhealthy, but this has been one of the hardest hit areas for air quality consistently reading unhealthy. So its nice to see you are now lo is pule . Bit of a break thcomi point reyes which we were talking about earlier has been directly upstream for much of marin county. Youve had some of the worst air quality over the last four days, through the valley into san rafael, a little better right now but it likely will get bad again. And then santa rosa, petaluma and sonoma you have also surprisingly escape the worst of it. That is not smoke, thats the marine layer. Lets come back out for the wider view. There is the marine layer within onshore search, thats good news, helping today with the fire and helping with the air quality. This is the scene from the sales force east, you could not see the east bay because they were so much smoke. And if we look down into the southbay, while its not pretty, at least we know the sensors are telling us theres been an improvement. The forecast for tomorrow, totally dependent on fire behavior, we are staying unhealthy into tomorrow. Lets get into the details on the possibility for a sunday night return for isolated thunderstorms. You can see the leftovers from the storm falling apart weve tracked this forward on the futurecast, and i want to stop it sunday night at 8 45. That is a line of thunderstorms off the coast. We should not look at a model like this and say exactly that location and exactly the time we will have thunderstorms. However, this is the highest forecast model ive got access to to share with you and the way this looks now is more impressive than the way it looked last week. Last week and he couldnt even pick up on the storms 12 to 18 hours out. If you look at the ingredients, there is actually a little less of everything. Its a less intimidating forecast than last sunday was. But as we talked about at the top of the newscast, sunday night through monday morning will be the crunch time. And it is possible, its not a guarantee, but it is possible and borderline likely that we see at least some more of those working their way through the bay area. Overnight lows tonight upper 50s, daytime highs tomorrow mid 80s, and if you look at the 7 day forecast, you see the two days with thunderstorms, weve got to put them on there but its not two days of thunderstorms straight through. We should be able to confine it in that sunday night monday morning time frame. We have some new video showing just what firefighters are up against and why you need to listen if the title leave. The napa county Sheriffs Office showed this video of the intense flames at the bay area states early this morning. It isnt clear how many homes were destroyed but deputies say they hope it will serve as a reminder to evacuate in order to do so or when you sent danger in your neighborhood. And heres a birds eye view of the same fire in the day late this afternoon. You can see flames ravaging another neighborhood. In no more than 500 buildings have been destroyed either lnu lightning complex. Shifting winds have people in Sonoma County on edge. New evacuation orders were ordered on the west side ge her meanwhile the czu lightning complex has burned 63,000 acres and is 5 contained. About 77,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, many of them are filling up hotels along the santa cruz boardwalk. Its all roller coaster. We find hope and then see devastation. Coupled with the pandemic, its like a double whammy. Mentally, its terrible, we stand to lose everything we have. Those fires along with the scu complex burning further inland now cover more than 1000 square miles. At this hour there is at least son containment on all of them. At the big concern is what happens overnight tonight. Lets start at overnight tonight into tomorrow. Before we get to the headline which is sunday night and monday morning. But before we get there, since weve been focused on new evacuations in the lnu lightning complex, specifically coming off the walbridge fire, it is very settled right now. I pulled up the streamlines for tomorrow afternoon, and this is whats different. The wind will shift a little more and start pushing whatever it is able to push in a somewhat different direction. Weve been dealing with a northwest wind on this fire in the last 24 hours. Tomorrow that will shift. There is not much we can do other than know that the details may change. Here is the bigger issue. So we will increase another 30 chance for isolated thunderstorms. It really seems that the bigger concern with this will be that gusty and a radical wind, we could get some lightning but this doesnt look like as long a duration or as widespread as last weekend. Now weve got a lot of fires that are ready to be fanned and flamed and pushed around and you cannot predict the direction on them. From what any thunderstorms do develop, its kind of like their own little panic environment and they can throw those winds forcefully in any direction. So anything we said about that shift, that does not matter at all. This will really make it difficult for the frontlines i will show you what this looks like again in more detail in just a bit. If you are looking to escape the smoke, city officials want you to change your mind. At least until monday. Devon feely explains. Reporter the cities of pacific and Half Moon Bay avenue close the parking lot to the city controlled beaches and the message is unmistakably clear, for this weekend they are saying dont come to the coast. It has been difficult. Andrew says he wanted to escape the fires, heat and the smoke driving in from union city to the coast. The motivation this morning was to try to find somewhere that has more fresh air. We are looking at the air quality app and in pacifica it was low numbers. The mayors of pacifica and Half Moon Bay pleaded with out oftowners to stay out of town and leave the roads for firefighters and other first responders. When we heard that the beach was going to close again, i dont think we gave much thought to our business, its another head, but we are very concerned about our neighbors to the south. Business owners say they want customers, but not if it comes at the expense of Public Safety. There is a lot more going on than just ourselves. This has given us perspective. Just when you think it cant get worse, it gets worse. Business owners say its an imperfect solution, asking tourists to stay clear of the coast, but they understand for now, what drove city leaders to make it. They dont take it lightly either. They are very concerned about our Small Businesses and have been very supportive trying to help us get back on our feet and stay on her feet. This is an attainable situation for them, they are dependent on tourists for business but they know that the needs of Public Safety must come first. Wildfire smoke has extended the spare the air alert through at least wednesday. Poor air quality is expected to have the heaviest impacts on the east bay and santa clara valley. But the wildfires combined with the current pandemic are creating a catch22 for businesses that have had to move their operations outdoors. With the smoke lingering for the next several days. They now have to choose between risking their health or their livelihood. It feels like the end of d the air is horrible. Its very hard to breathe. At some point we may have to close. This is just about the worst air you can breathe in when its full of wildfire smoke. If some of the workers have asthma for example, they will feel very uncomfortable in this wildfire smoke. Experts say its important to stay inside with windows and doors closed until the smoke level subside. They also recommend using air purifiers or air conditioning. Keep outside air for moving inside. And the smoke is just one of many health and safety concerns for firefighters on the front lines. We take a look at how the pandemic is piling on a whole new set of challenges. A new kind of base camp this fire season, firefighters hunkering down in a much larger area so they can spread out at the Nevada County fairgrounds. We will wash our hands and make sure we have our precautionary mask on. The captain showed us where the crews regroup, get food, rest and head back out to knock down the flames once again. But the routine is different in the middle of a pandemic. We have to set up a social distancing. They can take a break and sit down for a little bit, and its more like 10 feet. Doesnt make things more complicated for you guys . I wouldnt say complicated, because we will still accomplish the goal. I talked with a captain in less, someare even stationed in hotels to keep the groups small, adding more layers on an already difficult job. We get our Temperature Check , we are all wearing masks, its a lot different. I was wondering how fire season was going to be and now im seeing it firsthand. Friends and family of a Richmond Police officer who died from covid19 are trying to raise funds to cover his funeral costs. And i have some momentary good news on that route i will show you the airquality today and we will get more into the forecast for this weekend, next. Just when you thought we had peaked 2020, it now to a stunning rescue in rio vista. Firefighters spotted a couple struggling to evacuate the lnu fire on foot in the middle of the night. The man was crawling on all fours and his girlfriend was about a mile away. Our reporter explains how crews found them just in the nick of time. There would be no reason for life to be there and it was moving, thats wh thrthe haoran glow he swallow of flames, 54 yearold jim robinson was crawling down that side of highway 128, badly burned, using a flashlight to find help. We are talking 2nd to 3rd degree burns on the majority of his body. On the rio vista fire chief and the battalion chief jumped out, robinson refused help until they found his girlfriend karen who was hiding out in a culvert nearly a mile down the road. I told him thati could hear her from a distance crying and moaning out for help. So we definitely knew she was alive and in the area. After 40 minutes of searching, karen was found clutching a suitcase, severely injured abher hand and pulled her up the hill. The men then carried carry nearly a mile back to the truck before the two were rushed to the hospital. For jims family, chief armstrong and harrison are the only reason the couple survived. I told them, you know, thank you from the bottom of my heart. If it wasnt for you guys probably wouldnt be alive today. While its unclear exactly when the couple evacuated, they hope this dramatic rescue drives home one important message. If you live in an area of the wildland fire, have a plan. And airy look at the skies over the caribbean where a spotter plane is searching for the center of trtorm laura. She is headed toward cuba and is expected to veer tolff mexic and now nasa is monitoring an asteroid that is expected to have a close brush with her the day before the november election. The object has a diameter of about six and have beat it and while its expected to come close to our atmosphere, the probability of impact with earth is very remote, less than half a percent. While thats not that remote, but its only 6 1 2 feet. Thats not even up to 2020 standards. So im going to start with good news on the airquality. When we talk about it, you can look at it in two time frames, theres the right now, whats happening in this moment, and then theres the average over a day, which is probably the more important one to take away. Thats the next one i will show you. But in the here and now, for this moment. The airquality some of the best weve had in days. And im not saying its good, but at some of the best weve had in days. Heres the south bay, hopefully now, the color coding on the dots, you can go all the way to hazardous, but the ones we are really concerned about are the red and orange. And we dont have many of those down in the south bay and weve been stuck with a lot of those down there in the last few days. Im not saying its vastly improved, but you have to look at the specifics. Look at concord, we are still reading hazardous levels. The closer you are to the delta, you get a pole of hair pulling and a lot of the smoke. So vallejo and concord, you dont fall into this good news story. And parts of marin, but it is much better in southern marin, at least for these last two or three hours and it has been for much of the last several days. And heres the other way and more important way of looking at it. Heres the forecast for tomorrow. This takes the average throughout the day of what you should expect, and we are still in this, this is unhealthy, or unhealthy for sensitive groups. Thats the marine layer, all of this coming on sure, this is smoke, its getting hard to tell the two apart. But lets be thankful we got this, the marine layer is introducing a little more of a marine layer into our air. Looks good over the golden gate bridge. It may look ominous, but thats a good sign, its mostly marine layer. This is all small, thats the sky over san jose. The headline in the forecast looking ahead is sunday evening through monday morning timeframe. Here we go, right back in it again, another round of thunderstorms is possible. Right now its about a 30 chance. And while we could see some dried lightning with this, this scenario doesnt look as prolonged or widespread as what we saw last weekend. But it does have similar ingredients. To the point where this is possible, we could get some lightning. But the Biggest Issue will probably be the gusty and erratic winds that can really fanned the flames in chaotic ways that are impossible to predict and quite intense. So theres the red flag warning, starts tomorrow morning at 5 am, goes until 5 pm. Thats a long window. And weve got to be concerned about the possibility of that whole window. But really when you look at the most likely issue, it will come sunday night through monday timeframe, and theres the leftovers from that Tropical Storm thats falling apart. Let me leave you with the quick review for temperatures today. Morning lows will be to upper 50s, daytime highs will be similar to what they were today, no significant changes, low to mid 90s inland and 80s for much of the bay. For the 7 day forecast, sunday and monday might look ominous but we are not in for two days of thunderstorms.
