Prepare for the final day of the work week began. We are live at the czu august lightning complex fires base camp. This is a look at what it looks like. These are the battalion chiefs and operations personnel. Theyre getting ready for an update that they will give us at the 6 am hour. Right where we are standing, they were going on as business as usual but now where we are standing right now, this is all or under an order. The city of Scotts Valley west of highway 17 is forced to leave. This how shows how vast of an area it is. It is bounded by la honda to the north and highway 17 to the east and uc santa cruz to the southern by the Pacific Ocean to the west. At last count that is 48,000 people in that dark red area. That is the fire itself that is still burning out of control with 0 containment. This is video that cal fire shot out of a helicopter along the coastline. The fire has burned all the way to highway 1, which is shut down now. Employees were able to beat back the flames and save the Big Creek Lumber Company in davenport. They will get a better count of the homes destroyed. It was 20 officially yesterday but that number is likely to go up as they provide an update later this morning. There is not enough manpower and we have seen multiple actively burning homes with no firefighters around and as for the Evacuation Order for some families, it was a mess to get out with minutes to pack what they could fit inside their cars, not knowing if their homes would still be standing when they came back. It is difficult. You just need the bare essentials and Everything Else could be replaced, and it is overwhelming. You just want to grab one more thing and you cannot. At last report, the fire was a 48,000 acres and in the redwoods, these fires are mostly active in the overnight hours, so cal fire will once again hold its briefing at 6 00 to give us an update on all the numbers. We will have that for you live at 6 00. In Scotts Valley, kpix 5 before you go, where are some of the roadblocks . Reporter basically, if you try to come into the Evacuation Order, they have police blocking everything coming from the north, east and the south. Be prepared for there will be officers that will not let you in here. I imagine any kind of major stretch that you can think of to come into this burn zone will not happen. They may not get to all the side streets. Might be able to wiggle your way in that way but any kind of of the major ingress is will be blocked by Law Enforcement personnel. We will wait for those new details at 6 00. To the lnu lightning complex fire, through parts of solano, napo, yolo, and lake counties, more people are being forced out of their homes as Evacuation Orders poor in. Anne makovec is staying on top of this growing blades. We are getting some incredible new video showing how fast these planes can move. I want to point out that this video from an area that was actually under an evacuation warning. Look what happened. The house is on fire this is in healdsburg and no firefighters anywhere around. This is on Wallace Creek road. Part of the walbridge fire was shot this is continuing to rage in sonoma county. This fire alone is 20,000 acres, 0 containment but it is part of the lnu complex, that was just talked about and it is burning across the five counties and there have been almost 500 buildings that have burned, homes and businesses alike. Here is where we are, Wallace Creek near mill creek road is west of 101 and it is west of dry creek, less than a mile from a bunch of wineries and that area is under evacuation warnings, which is just, it goes to show how quickly this can go from a warning to it is too late and then houses are on fire. We will continue to follow up on this throughout the morning. We have a crew on our way to that seen we will have pictures coming up later on this hour. Back to you. To the south bay now, about half of Santa Clara County is under an Evacuation Order or warning right now. The scu lightning complex fires is burning in San Joaquin County and has grown by 60 since wednesday. The view from chopper 5 shows a huge plume of smoke hanging over the hills. Much of the bay area still covered in smoke. This is what it looked like in the east bay before sunset. But continued are Team Coverage with mary lee. Air quality is bad again today . . That is right. That will continue as you look ahead through our weekend. We will see those hazy and smoky skies for a few more days. This is the air quality conditions, looking at unhealthy air for the east bay. Fairfield, concord, and livermore. Now, lets show you that spare the air alert that continues today through the weekend due to this unhealthy air and all of the smoke in the atmosphere. Our temperatures will be a little above average for this time of year but not talking about that extreme heat. No longer looking at triple digit heat for inland locations but still a warm to hot day, 96 in concord, 88 for san jose, and the 70s around the bay. Checking the lnu lightning complex fires, there is high humidity. That is good news for firefighters. For the walbridge fire burning to the east of healdsburg, wind gusts are up to 13 miles an hour as we look to the scu lightning complex fires, wind gusts are up to 25 miles an hour in that area. We will talk about what you can expect for the weekend and we could see some tropical moisture moving in. I will have details on that in a few minutes. Many evacuees from the czu lightning complex fires are going to Half Moon Bay to seek refuge and now city leaders are urging visitors to stay away. The issue is so serious they have city manager signing an executive order to close the city beaches from sunrise today until sunrise monday. The Half Moon Bay high school is serving as the Evacuation Center and city leaders say the roads need to be accessible to evacuees as well as first responders. It is not the best weekend coming up to have a gridlock of traffic and to be stuck in it. It is important that we keep the roads open and easily accessible to those that need to evacuate their homes and everything that they know. Highway 1 is closed south of pescadero, causing more pressure on highway 92 and smaller roads in Half Moon Bay. Lets go our traffic reporter Gianna Franco with an update on other road closures. There are quite a few on the map of the area you are mentioning. This is highway one. There are closures as far as 35 and la honda road. That has shot down 84 in both directions between highway 1 and this boulevard. It extends to the Santa Cruz Mountains. A lot of areas around pescadero and santa cruz are also closed. Try to stay away from the area and avoid the coastline as they need to have those roads open for those trying to escape and evacuate. We saw the closures along 236 around basin way and parts of highway 35 and highway nine continues with closures around Western Avenue to skyline boulevard. I will check a Traffic Alert in my next report. With so many people in need, if you want to donate, visit redcross. Not sure of the amount of damage but you can see from this video it looks like some power poles are down and the house is on fire. This is the area that firefighters were not anywhere nearby when this house went up, so we are checking for damage there this morning. We have a crew on the way and we will keep you posted throughout the morning. It is 5 14. We have another day of bad air expected for San Francisco. Fairfield, concord, and livermore, they are dealing with unhealthy air because of that westerly wind flow and the onshore flow bringing that smoke to the east bay. Lets show you that spare the air alert that remains in effect all the way through the weekend. Were looking at unhealthy air for sensitive groups for the north bay, close to, and central bay but unhealthy air for all of us, everyone for the east bay and Santa Clara Valley through our friday. We are looking at the stronger onshore flow. That ridge of High Pressure is backing off a little bit to the north, ushering in that stronger marine influence for us. Temperatures are little cooler, especially compared to the extreme heat that we have seen over the last several days but we are going to see the winds increase. As we go through late in our weekend, it could get interesting. We are watching the potential for some tropical moisture moving in once again. That will be late sunday into monday because of Tropical Storm genevieve, just off the Baja California coast and as it moves up the coast, it will likely get weaker but this is the future cast and the atmosphere of moisture is tracking. As it moves up the coast, it will bring some tropical moisture and the possibility of more moisture late sunday into monday and that could bring a few showers and isolated thunderstorms as well as lightning strikes. It is very concerning. We will have a better idea as we get closer but right now there is that chance. Winds are breezy at 10 to 15 to 20 miles an hour this afternoon and daytime highs are looking at 88 in san jose, 87 for santa clara and 90 for campbell, and 95 for morgan hill. 96 for concord and pleasant hill, low to mid 90s for the trivalley and around the bay, in the 70s. 74 for San Francisco, 77 for oakland, and 94 in santa rosa and 90 for petaluma and sonoma. It is 94 in cloverdale. Here is what you can expect. Some temperatures will be very similar through the next several days but again we are going to see more clouds into next week and the chance for some tropical moisture to move in late sunday into monday. Lets check in with a look at traffic. I know that you are tracking the latest on those closures for the wildfires. I am and there are quite a few of them. I am watching that list. I want to start with a trouble spot as you go into San Francisco northbound 101 around vermont. It is past cesar chavez. It takes about an hour to clear. We saw some slow speeds about 10 minutes ago. It is improving slightly but there are still some lanes blocked. If youre going into the city, use 280. We have more traffic on northbound01. There is a crash and some debris blocking that offramp. A Traffic Alert has been issued there as well. And then there is traffic southbound 880 near 92. This is due to a crash blocking two lanes and there is glass and debris in the roadway. That is into the hayward area. The Allatoona Pass is getting busy, 30 minutes from 205 to 680. The busiest ride is near the grant line area. I will show you an overview as you work your way north of the north bay. Highway one between meyers grade road and ford ross is not doing well. There are some closures not far from 101 itself, road closures on westside road between these roads. We have this ongoing closure along 128 still in effect. It is around 120 to Pleasant Valley road and silverado trail is also affected. Please ongoing closures along highway 1 between pastor carol and santa cruz are also there. Good morning, it is friday, august 21st. We continue our breaking coverage of the wildfires. These are the last images captured by a camera in solano county, around now to back up. Two other wildfire cameras met the same fate. That is one of the many fires burning right now in the bay area. The three major groups of fires right now on the czu the su complex in santa clara and San Joaquin County, and the biggest story is the fire here in lake county. The fires disband nearly 420,000 acres so far. That is over six and 55 square miles and 14 times the size of San Francisco and there is still practically no containment. We have live Team Coverage all morning long. We begin with keit do. Reporter we are here in the city of Scotts Valley. This is the base camp for the czu lightning complex fires. Theyre getting ready for an update to give us a briefing at 6 00. We are 30 minutes away from that. The situation is evolving rapidly. The fire is still burning out of control. Right now, we are not deep in the woods were in town and yet where we are standing, this is under a mandatory Evacuation Order. This map shows how vast of an area we are talking about. The order is shaded in light red and is bounded by la honda to the north and highway 17 to the east and you can see santa cruz campus and the Pacific Ocean all the way to the west. That is 48,000 people. The dark red area in the middle is the fire burning out of control with 0 containment. This is video that cal fire shot and posted yesterday from their helicopter traveling southbound along highway 1. The fire burn all the way to the highway and then shut it down. Employees at the Big Creek Lumber Company were able to save that lumber mill. It is Still Standing at this point. Damage assessment crews will be moving in today to get a better sense of the homes destroyed. It was at 20 but i can tell you after driving through the burn area, portion of it yesterday were actively burning. That is sure to go up. There is not enough manpower and we will be asking cal fire about reinforcements that are coming in from outside the region. We met a man by the name of allen strong and he decided to stay behind and defend his restaurant alone and he was hoping for the best. Me and my dog will be in that poll, sipping for air. The fire was at 40,000 acres and this part of the bay area is mostly active in the overnight hours. Cal fire is holding a press briefing live at 6 00 and we will carry it for you write on channel 5. In scotts daily, keit do picks a we have been monitoring the big flareup outside of the city of healdsburg in sonoma county. This is video from this morning. It is similar to the Damage Assessment. It is not even theryet. This is from the walled ridge fire, near the lnu lightning complex fires. The official word was that almost 500 buildings have burned but several new ones overnight, were talking up to two dozen homes near healdsburg that have been burning and when we saw this one, there were not any firefighters nearby, so this Damage Assessment is going to get much worse as the sun rises and the lnu lightning complex fires has burned more than 15,000 acres and is 0 contained and the walbridge fire is just a part of that. Lets take a look at the maps so i can show you where we are talking about. This is where we saw this flareup. Wallace creek near milk week road west of 101 and dry creek, that is your people are familiar with because it is less than a mile from a bunch of wineries in that area and there were evacuation warnings in effect for that neighborhood however as you also heard, a lot of people have decided to stay behind. We will be on top of this today as we find out more information on what happened overnight and exactly where the fire is going as we speak. The scu lightning complex fires is more than 157,000 acres. The fires burning in several counties including Santa Clara County. There are evacuations for some people east of san jose and the flames are encroaching on the lake observatory on mount hamilton. This was the scene overnight but for now the telescopes and Visitor Center are Still Standing. We are looking at smoke that continues to settle over ubad air quality on tap. Of lets go over to mary lee. Is the smoke going to linger all day . It will. Unfortunately, this smoke will even continue through the weekend, which is why the spare the air alert will be in effect all the way through sunday. Lets check the air quality conditions. And unhealthy air for concord and livermore and westerly winds pushing all the smoke to the east bay and the trivalley this morning. We are looking at unhealthy air as we look through our day which is why that spare the air alert remains in effect for today through the weekend. Our temperatures are going to be above average. It is not the extreme heat we have seen. It is a hot day in concord at 96, 88 in san jose and 70s around the bay. It is 74 for San Francisco. At the lnu lightning complex fires, there is higher humidity, up to 80 for the walbridge fire, burning west of healdsburg, with wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour. Firefighters are dealing with windy conditions and the Santa Cruz Mountains have wind gusts up to 17 miles an hour. I will talk about the possibility of some tropical moisture for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. Across the bay area, overstretched cal fire crews are working double shifts. Officials say they are overwhelmed and understaffed. The governor has requested help from neighboring states, nevada and arizona are fighting major fires of their own. We do have so many wildfires burning in our region. Here is the Treasure Island camera. We have patchy fog along the coast and the bay and of course that haziness. Lets show you the temperatures this morning. They are in the 50s and 60s. 63 in oakland, 60 for livermore, 59 in San Francisco and san jose is 53. Here is the wild weather we have experienced. We had 11,000 lightning strikes thats part 370 new wildfires and because of that, about 10,000 firefighters are now battling all of this massive and devastating wildfires for our region. And because of those wildfires, we have that smoke. We are dealing with it looking at unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups from fairfield conquer livermore, and san jose and moderate air quality for oakland and napa and because of this unhealthy air, we have a spare the air alert that extends all the way through the weekend because of this smoke. We are going to be stuck with this over the next few days. As we look to this ridge of High Pressure that has backed off a bit, and this low pressure system to our north come it is ushering stronger onshore flow. That is why we have that patchy fog in spots and with that westerly winds, we will see the winds kick up. It will be another breezy day across the bay area. Not the best news for firefighters but at least with that onshore flow, we have higher relative humidity and that is helping fire crews trying to get a handle on these fires. Through late in the week, it could turn into low pressure of what is left of genevieve and that could bring some tropical moisture into late sunday into monday. It bring showers and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and lightning strikes, the biggest concern as we go through late sunday into monday. Because of Tropical Storm jenny dean off the Baja California coast, as it moved out it is going to get weaker as it moves up the coast. On future cast, you can see that atmospheric moisture that could move into the bay area. That is why it is so concerning with a chance of some isolated thunderstorms late sunday into monday. In the meantime, we are going to see breezy conditions and winds picking up through the afternoon and daytime highs for the south bay, looking at 88 in san jose, 92 for los gatos. The trivalley is in the low to mid 90s and in the 70s and the north bay too low to mid 90s. Here is the extended forecast we will have clouds for the weekend into early next week and the chance for some tropical moisture late sunday into monday. Thank you, as we look at the roadways, there are a number of closures due to these wild parsers but we have a couple of accidents causing a backup especially for 101. Theres a lot to get to into San Francisco. There is an accident involving an overturned truck stuck on its side, blocking two right lanes. It will be out there past at least 5 30 or 6 00. There is a hydraulic problem. Hopefully, they will get someone to soak that up. You are looking at 280 as a better bet if you are commuting northbound 101. Elsewhere, some good news. They reopened the ramp from north 101. They had a Traffic Alert due to a crash and 880 is bogged down south. There is one near 92 and another one at winton. They are both blocking lanes. You will see brake lights south of Castro Valley and union city. And then the westbound right out of tracy towards the Allatoona Pass has busy conditions. You are low and go all the way to this area. And there is a fog advisory in effect for the golden gate bridge. Olive those closures, many of them are in effect for this multiple wildfires. I will get to some of them but i do keep them updated on my twitter page. Things are clear are around 101 but there are some closures around dry creek road. Parts of 116 are also completely shut down as well as parts of highway 1 into sonoma county, between meyers grade road and four ross road. Also, both directions between silverado trail and the napa county line have difficulties. Governor newsom is expected to get off the covid watchlist. Why they did not have it happen after all.
