Good evening. Im ken bastida. Im Juliette Goodrich in for elizabeth. Now at 11 00 and streaming on cbsn bay ea hos in danger as crews try desperately to get a handle on dozens of wildfires tonight. We have Live Team Coverage on the fires and the heat. First kpix5s joe vazquez is near the front lines of the hennessey fire in napa county. Joe. Reporter it is a warm night here in napa county along the grapefields here and there [ technical difficulties ] reporter folks here keeping their fingers crossed conditions will continue. Reporting live, joe vazquez, kpix5 news. We have new video in the past 90 minutes of the other wildfire burning in napa county. This one is called the gamble fire, this one burning about 600 acres near lake berryessa. Theres no containment on this one yet. Evacuation orders are in effect along portions of highway 128. Reporter im Katie Nielsen live. This is kill care road, an area where hundreds of people are still under evacuation warning tonight. Earlier today the canyon was under a mandatory Evacuation Order when winds picked up blowing flames from the ridge towards the homes, but as the winds calmed down, the order was downgraded to a warning. The hard part about these fires is that so many started all at the same time. Resources are being spread thin and in some cases the fires in the most remote areas are not being staffed. We have orders in for more crews and stuff, but they do prioritize the fires based on life threats, property threats and move crews to the fire locations that need it iineye just trying to be super cautious. They dont have a lot of people to fight the fires because theyre everywhere right now. Reporter many residents along killcare say its a tough decision whether to stay or go. Its hard to leave their homes, but they also know its a Narrow Canyon with only one road in and one road out. Now right now the winds are calm. Temperatures are down. So fire crews hope to take advantage of this calm fire weather to try to reinforce the containment lines they were building yesterday and today. Katie nielsen, kpix5. Not much relief from the heat in the east bay even at this late hour, chief meteorologist paul hagan has details on another super hot day tomorrow before the heat backs off a little bit. The emphasis there is just a little bit. Temperatures in the east bay e in a lot of locations again on tuesday, especially around the Santa Clara Valley will be well into the 90s. In terms of the fire threat, conditions are improving. Joe and katie both reporting the winds are fairly calm. It does feel muggy, but thats a good thing in terms of fire containment, humidity 50 to 60 around the marsh fire and light winds, 5 to 10 miles an hour. As temperatures continue to drop, the humidity well continue to go up. For the hennessey fire talking about temperatures around 80 degrees, same thing for the gamble fire near lake berryessa. The winds are light, though, in most of napa county and for contra costa county, the deer zone fire, temperatures are warm, but the humidity levels are climbing and the winds are very light, so at least some good news there, but the heat for inland portions of the bay area will be really tough to shake for the foreseeable future. Check out the full sevenday forecast coming up in a few minutes. No rolling blackouts expected for the remainder of this evening, but we could see more coming this week thanks to the heat. In san jose a neighborhood that lost power is hoping it doesnt get stuck in the dark again. Kpix5s maria medina in san jose where the mayor says pg e is lying to its customers. I have zero trust on pg e. Reporter after 44 hours without power because of a broken transformer ragu batula fears for the worst, losing his power again but this time to pg es rolling blackouts. We feel angry actually as to why this happens in a state like us in a country like ours. Reporter on saturday around 8 30 p. M. Ragu and 340 of his neighbors in the almaden area lost electricity including brian cain and his wife. The first night that we were here in this weather it was terrible. It was just really hot. Reporter their power off as the heatwave continued leaving them frustrated at pg e. I think its shameful. Reporter as well as mayor sam liccardo. Pg e is not being up front with our residents. Reporter today the mayor blasted pg e claiming the utility was dishonest when it blamed its rolling blackouts on the California Independent system operator saying it was their decision to turn off power. The mayor says instead his constituents experienced extended blackouts because of pg es failing system. And while certainly the heat is a contributing factor, the fundamental reason is the inadequate infrastructure that pg e has failed to replace in too many years. Two nights with basically zero sleep. Reporter ragu said without power they lost 300 worth of groceries and his son missed class today. Now he just hopes his neighborhood gets spared from pg es rotating outages. Were actually thinking of getting a generator now because we cant trust pg e. That was maria medina reporting. Now on to campaign 2020, an unconventional convention, night one ofthe c wisconsin featured some major star power and a very powerful statement from a bay area woman. Reporter natalie brand is live in the Nations Capital with tonights top moments. Natalie. Reporter yeah, juliette. This was not the big inperson convention that were used to, the big political party. Instead it was highly produced for tv and for your computer screen. Actress eva longoria actually served as kind of an emcee bringing in various participants from a nurse to a farmer. She also introduced the key speakers of the night, kind of a broad politically Diverse Group designed to showcase a Broad Coalition of support for the biden harris ticket. We the people. We the people of the united states. We the people call the 48th Democratic National convention to order. Reporter with that the Democratic National convention kicked off. The night was headlined by senator bernie sanders. If donald trump is reelected, all the progress we have made will be in jeopardy. Reporter and former first Lady Michelle obama. If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for joe biden like our lives depend on it. Reporter other speakers highlighted why they believe joe biden is the best choice to lead the country through challenges of the coronavirus. Our current federal government is dysfunctional and incompetent. It couldnt fight off the virus. In fact, it didnt even see it coming. Reporter the economic fallout. Its crucial that we rally together to fight this virus and build our economy back better. Reporter and racial injustice. We must always find ourselves in what john lewis called good trouble. Reporter night one was also designed to show case support across the political spectrum. Four republicans including former Ohio Governor and 2016 president ial candidate john kasich are lending their support to biden. Many of us cant imagine four more years going down this path and thats why im asking you to join with me in choosing a better way forward. Reporter earlier President Trump took a swipe at democrats during a trip to wisconsin where the Democratic National convention was supposed to be held in person. They talk about a convention. How do you watch a taped speech . Reporter the president plans to visit more swing states this week, his democratic challenger formally accepting the nomination from delaware on thursday. Natalie, we saw a lot of star power and politicians, but a San Francisco woman is getting a lot of attention for her story, her fathers story to urge people to support biden. Tell us about that. Reporter yeah. This was a very emotional speech by kristen orkiza of the bay area. She lost her father sadly to the coronavirus. He lived in arizona and kristen really blames the response, both the federal response and the localized response, in that state. She said her father went to a karaoke bar with his friends when restrictions began to loosen and he was kind of under the impression that the virus was improving, the conditions were improving. Heres a clip of her speech. Im one of the many who have lost a loved one to covid. My dad, mark anthony orkiza, should be here today, but he isnt. He had faith in donald trump. He voted for him, listened to him. His only preexisting condition was trusting donald trump and for that he paid with his life. Reporter she also said that she would like to see a leader who puts forward a National Coordinated data driven response and in the last portion of her remarks she said her father told her one of his final comments was that he felt betrayed by President Trump and that she will cast her ballot for biden in honor of her father. It was a powerful remark. Natalie, thank you. For a complete rundown of all of this weeks speakers and information on how you can watch, just head to the special dnc section on kpix. As San Francisco students are grabbing their devices and logging on, hundreds of School Bus Drivers are learning they wont have jobs even after kids head back to the classroom. Kpix5s joe vazquez has the exclusive tonight. Reporter Distance Learning means the school buses are not running. On the first day of class in the San FranciscoSchool District the bus drivers have received shocking news. This is my layoff notice. Reporter Sharon Chapel has been a bus driver here for 38 years and is president of the smart union local 1741. She confirms all 249 School Bus Drivers for sfusd are now being laid off with no health coverage. Im short of crying right now because they dont know what to do. Reporter chapel says despite budget cuts other districts are still paying their drivers for now, but sfusd which contracts out its bus services to a private contract called First Student has decided not to go that route. First student tells kpix5 it had no choice but to lay drivers off. Paul stine has been a driver in San Francisco for 49 years. He says sfusds decision hits hard during the pandemic. Except for the first few years weve had Health Insurance and its never lapsed and this is the first time thats happening. Now that im 71 years old and more susceptible to catching the virus. Reporter in a statement the San Francisco unified School District says, the district pays First Student approximately 30 million annually to bus approximately 3,500 sfusd students. Sfusd continues to face budget shortfalls and cannot afford to continue paying for nonservice. We must prioritize our students, families and staff. The people that you entrust with transporting your children, youre going to literally throw that driver under the bus to be told that youre going to lose your healthcare and youre going to be unemployed in the middle of the pandemic. Ill just think its immoral. Reporter joe vazquez, kpix5. Tonight First Student tells us the layoffs are intact, but it will cover Health Insurance for laid off drivers through the end of september. Santa clara county cracking down on businesses that violate the health order. Officials handed out notices to three different shops last week basically warning notifying them about potential fines and giving them a grace period to make some changes. Salons all across the state defying the Health Orders today and open for Indoor Services from San Francisco to los angeles, barbers and stylists protesting the lockdown saying they cant stay closed any longer. The Outdoor Services just are not cutting it. Also tonight Santa Cruz County is now off the states watch list. Health officials will reevaluate the order. If cases remain the same or lower the next couple weeks, some businesses like salons will be able to reopen legally. Back to fire watch now, a wildfire burning in Santa Cruz County has more than doubled in size. The fire broke out north of davenport. Flames have now scorched 120 acres with containment at 5 . Lightning is blamed for sparking this fire. Well, its been the theme the last couple of days is fire, lightning. Literally thousands of lightning strikes. The storms are gone. Thats the good news, but now the fire crews have to battle not just the fires, but the heat, the extremely hot conditions that arent going to alleviate much heading through the week, but at least the storms are gone. Extremely hot weather tomorrow. Tomorrow is the peak of the heat for this week and then we back down a little bit. It will be milder near the water tomorrow around the coast and around the bay, not quite as hot late this week, but inland temperatures are still well into the 90s, some spots threatening triple digits through the weekend. Now temperatures are all over the place, 62 downtown, but still at or above 80 in concord and livermore, the inland temperatures only dropping down to the low 70s in most spot by tomorrow morning. Santa rosa is into the upper 60s now. Youll level off maybe a degree or two cooler than you are now. Temperatures by tomorrow morning very warm for this time of year, even upper 50s along the coast, above average for the middle of august and mid 70s for concord and fairfield, way above normal, but lets try to find some more good news or at least a smile with a puppy dog in the forecast. This is leah. Thank you to roberta, leahs person, for sharing that person. This dog is lucky. She lives in the city where temperatures warm up to around 80 degrees tomorrow afternoon. Thats maybe a little warm for a dog used to San Francisco weather, but inland walk your dogs early or wait till after the sun goes down because midday will be way too hot. Look at these high temperatures. Were talking widespread triple digit heat for the inland east bay, for much of the north bay and even the Santa Clara Valley, well into the 90s and a few hotspots will get up to 100, low to mid80s around the bay, low 90s around the south end of the bay, low 70s around the coast. There will be fog early tomorrow morning, but it will dissipate quickly. Air quality will be a concern. Hot weather tends to be stagnant weather. The air quality will be in the moderate area. Folks with severe breathing difficulties may experience some issues by tuesday afternoon during the peak of the heat and the excessive heat warning continues. Tomorrow will be the hottest day with temperatures inland reaching up to or above 100 degrees, but the excessive heat warning goes until 9 00. Its kind of a cumulative effect with the longer the heat lasts, the more it wears you down even if our temperatures back off slightly, look at all the 90s. After tomorrow spots around the bay mostly are back down to the mid to upper 70s, a few spots in the low 80s on the east side is of the bay. Lots of excitement in the weather the past couple days, not so much on the good days. Some excitement maybe for sports as well, andrea. Yeah. Maybe i can cool some fans off here. Because theyre always on. Another lifechanging technology from abbott. So you dont wait for life. You live it. Safe two historical meltdowns against the as over the weekend, manager gabe kapler said he still had confidence in his closer trevor gott. That confidence was put to the test again tonight against the angels. The angels had a 54 lead in the sixth inning, but with two on and two outs, yeah, it finds a hole to drive in the pair. The giants take a 65 lead. It became the bullpens job to help end the losing streak. Oh, no, thats right, oh, no, bottom nine there he is. Trevor gott allowed a oneout single and then the big one. A curve ball goes over the high ball and wright to walk it off. Gott has blown leads in three straight appearances and allowed 11 runs in that span. Kaplers patience has finally run out. Yeah. Were looking for a softer landing spot to try to build some confidence for him and well examine what other options we have to take down high leverage moments of the game for the time being. Its a tough go at it right now, you know, and really it seems like its been going for a long time, but its really just been three games. Three games doesnt really define your season. I really do have all the faith in the world that he can figure something out and get back out there and be himself again. The as were trying to stay hot in the diamondbacks air conditioning. This is what happens when youre winning. Matt olson hits what should have been the final out of the eighth, but the ball is dropped and a run scores to tie the me. The as lost in the ninth with the game died. Jake diekman serves up the walkoff single to right off the bat of peralta. The as lose 43. Jalen hurd missed all of last season with a back injury, but he tore his acl knee ligament and will require surgery and is going back on the shelf. Night one of the nba playoffs and it got chippy. 21yearold luka doncic with 41 points. Close game until the final seconds. The clippers wing buries the three for an eightpoint lead.
