Rushing through acre after acre of woodland. You can see from the video taken about an hour ago flames shooting 40 feet high in the air a we said, 2400 acres have burned with 205 homes in the evacuation zone. People in napa county are no stranger to catastrophic fire and have been preparing. We are nervous, but we have done a lot of Fire Prevention work over the past year preparing ourselves since 2017. We have been doing a lot of work around here to take flammable trees down and clear as much as we can. So far, the fire still has a zero containment on this place partially due to unstable air conditioning. It made retardant drops impossible which is how we stop fires here in rugged terrain like this around napa and sonoma counties. Any update on the fire burning nearby as well . That fire stands at 375 acres, that is the gamble fire burning near knoxville road west of brooks right now. It has zero containment at this point as well, with of course the rugged terrain in this area and very heavy air conditions here. It is warm outside but also quite humid making things a little trickier in the sky as well. Thank you for that. Lightning is likely also to blame for another wildfire in santa clara county, the other direction. The marsh fire exploding to nearly 2000 acres, this one spark sunday morning near oak ridge road northeast, there are now several different fires burning in that same area. Some residents are being told to be prepared to move out. Katie nielsen is live. We are downtown, this is where hundreds of residents are under an evacuation warning. Around 12 30 this afternoon the Alameda County sheriff issued mandatory evacuations for this area has a fire up on the ridge started moving down toward the homes. Firefighters say it was the wind pushing flames closer to the homes, but the fire was able to bring in air support to stop the fires forward progress at the same time those winds calm down. Thats when the mandatory Evacuation Order was downgraded to a warning. I am packing up anyway so we are going to take things on the safe side. Still looks like a lot of other residents were getting ready to leave this afternoon loading items into their cars. Another issue for People Living all the way at the top of the road is the lack of Cell Phone Service. Power has been out in the area since yesterday morning, then, without Cell Phone Service or Home Internet they say they have no way of getting these changingvacuation orders, the Sheriffs Department does have additional deputies in the area to make sure that they are able to go doortodoor and notify residents if mandatory evacuations are necessary later on today. Right now, there is a temporary Evacuation Center set up at the residence inn near the livermore outlets. Evacuation orders remain in place for residents along Morgan Territory and marsh creek road. This is due to wildfires near brentwood. The fires near the ground valley regional preserve are believed to have been sparked by lightning on sunday. More than 1100 acres have been burned due to the fires. The preserve and other nearby parks are closed. Paul heggen has been following the lightning strikes , and the heat across the bay area. The combination is not good. The heat is not going to go anywhere but the lightning is not going to be a factor. Still a couple of showers that the lightning has moved farther off to the north. Things are going to dry out, that is not necessarily good when it comes to fire. From mount hamilton, you can see smoke from the marsh fire looking out from that direction. Temperatures there are in the upper 80s and low 90s humidity could be worse 25 to 35 , we usually worry when the winds are not that strong. There are gusts up to 20 Miles Per Hour. Other fires keeping tabs on, the hennessy fire with temperatures hot, low to mid 90s it is muggy up there as well. That helps the fire conditions but hurts the fire crews because they have to deal with the heat indices around 100 degrees. Lower than 10 Miles Per Hour and mid to upper 90s close to 100 degrees with humidity, the 25 to 35 range could be worse as the wind speeds. But the work is cut out for them as the heat is going to continue. We will take a look at how hot tomorrow is going to be and if we have any relief at all in the 7 day forecast in a few minutes. Now at 6 00. Right now 1 million homes could lose power as part of the rolling blackouts all across the state. Californias electric grid operator says its ordered Utility Companies to start shutting off power as demand for electricity goes up amid a heat wave. The governor is calling for an investigation into the rolling blackouts to figure out why, and how they happened. Outages have started in alameda and also on notice for potential lockouts are san mateo county, and napa county. Emily turner has why these shutoffs are happening now. Thats the question on everyones mind, the folks here in this neighborhood between the weather and the issue with the grid, they have had no power for basically three days, and they are frustrated with these blackouts. They are apparently in an effort to go green. We are learning the part of the reason californians are facing rolling outages has to do with the states effort to go green. They are transitioning away from traditional natural gas power plants leaving renewable sources to make up the difference. We cannot sacrifice reliability as we move forward in this transition. The governor has called for an investigation into how and why the blackouts are happening. The board member says its the result of years of policies, politics, and poor planning. Partially to the utilities, partially the legislature because it has led here with the requirements. And its much easier to say, you shall have 33 renewables. And to say, here is how it will all work. They sounded the alarm in january to the cpuc and some things were done, but with more days of rolling blackouts, clearly it was not enough. The desire to go for old to new in the transition comes the need to have more insurance. I need to recognize that there have been by definition in the last few days what we expect over the next few days, gaps in terms of reliability. Consumers are paying the price. The fix will take years eating up reserves, expanding Power Sources and investing in more infrastructure. In the meantime the burden is ours to bear by cutting back on consumption and keeping the grid from being overloaded. Its not a good scene, and i dont know what the solution is. But, i know it is really inconvenient and potentially is going to shut down a lot of businesses working from home in schools. It really does fall on us, the consumers. So what can we do to keep from overloading the system . So it really is going to have to be a partnership at this point between providing the power and us who use it. Keeping air conditioning to 78 degrees not putting it down to 67 which i had to correct my husband and making sure you only have it on in the morning, not in the peak hours from 4 00 until 9 00 p. M. And some of the big things that each power, just save that, procrastinate those chores. Until it is not so hot. Hold off on that stuff. Emily, thank you. Many parents remain deeply concerned about the quality of education that their kids are receiving. Online learning was uneven and for some students and parents simply subpar. The quality varies widely from classroom to classroom, school to school, and community to community. It is against the backdrop that the School Reopens today in San Francisco. Her teacher was very committed. Kathleen and her daughter had a genuinely good experience with Online Learning in the spring but realized it was something of a rarity. Some parents are having two halfhour zoom meetings and the rest of the time as independent learning. There was not a lot of structure. Unified School District admits the rollout of Online Learning was an important lesson learned. We must do better than we did. Over the summer the district handed out laptops, tablets, and wifi hotspots. That alone would not be enough to bridge the achievement gap. A connection is going to be key, not only is it having a device and being ready to go but really being able to support our students and families holistically. Online learning requires them to be more involved in handson to ensure their children do not fall behind. My concerns that we are going to see the gap come the achievement gap widening for kids who dont have enough the quality of online fami. Instruction should be measurably better than the spring, but there is still a learning curve for everybody. Its about connecting with students and making sure that there is outreach from as many people as possible. Not only Classroom Teachers but the social workers and counselors. The School Officials say they understand that not all of the problems going to be solved on day one. This is something that requires constant effort, monitoring, and adjustments. Anyone with information is asked to call the San FranciscoPolice Departments 24 hour ti we are eping an eye on a wildfire burning in napa county dubbed the hennessey fire, about 2400 acres and we saw what could be a home that has been completely destroyed by the flames. You can see some of the stuff going on there, more than 200 residents are in the evacuation zone right now, they paid could be asked to move at any moment, which could be extended we want to check in with paul right now and lightning is suspected in starting this. Everything is so dry and the heat does not help the firefighting. Even though they drop a little bit of rain, it is less than 10th of an inch and it moves out so fast, it is not enough to douse the fires. There is some good news, we have seen the last of the lightning strikes with some shower scooting through but conditions around the hennessey fire is where cal fire can go do some drops without encountering any additional thunderstorm activity. Showers moving to the north, not completely dry just yet but the atmosphere will dry out over the next couple of days. Lets wind it back to early this morning tracking the first cloud to water lightning strikes that became cloud to ground in the north bay. We said the focus for the additional thunderstorm activity was likely to be over the north bay especially by late morning. A lot of cloud to ground lightning into sonoma county. But enough to get it going. Especially the hennessey fire and another fire for the north and napa county. Showers out there right now but becoming fewer and further in between, lighter not producing the cloud to ground lightning. We still have some smoke overhead as well is we are looking out from the rooftop, these clouds helped us out kept temperatures from warming up as much but still the response above 100 degrees, still 92 degrees downtown the marine layer is doing its best to sneak back in. 65 degrees is the current temperature otherwise talking mostly 80s, 90s, and tomorrow as the clouds depart early in the day we are really going to heat up. Temperatures are several degrees cooler than we were then how ridiculously hot it was. Were climbing back up as we had through the afternoon hours. Temperatures not dropping a whole lot with the layer of clouds acting like a blanket keeping it near the ground level. Mid to upper 70s. In the valley of the north bay and along the coast dipping off a little bit more. There will be some fog right around the bay, its not going to spread too far inland. By late morning already visibility unobstructed other than smoke and haze in the atmosphere. Combined with the heat leading to some airquality issue forecast across the bay area and heres the heat. Low to mid 80s, low 90s with mid to upper 90s with the hotspots inland at or above 100 degrees and way above 100 degrees inland, 106 fairfield. Heat advisorys going till 9 00 this evening but the excessive heat warning continues until 9 00 p. M. Wednesday.
