Now at 11 00 we are on storm watch for another Lightning Storm in the bay area. The city is already seeing some rain. People are cleaning up after this mornings storm, a look at some of the major damage. This happened all the same time. Large wildfires sparked by lightning still burning across the east and south bay. Thats where we start with breaking news. 4 fires bursting in east contra costa county. Orders impacting residence along marsh creek road. Just outside of brentwood. The four fires sparked this morning when lightning struck the ground at the round valley regional preserve. Now burning 400 acres with zero containment. After hours of battling the fire, crews issued evacuation orders less than two hours ago. Coming up we will have an update on the growing cluster of fires in santa clara countys prompting orders. A short time ago we learned of a small earthquake in contra costa county. A 2. 6 magnitude earthquake near alamo around 10 00 tonight. Since we live in earthquake country its not exactly electrifying news. But this is a rare sight across the skies, photos and videos flooding into the newsroom. We have Team Coverage of the storms and the damage that followed this morning. Paul h a look night. As if one round of thunderstorms wasnt enough, we could see another round developing tonight and tomorrow morning. Its odd for this time of year but now we are not seeing much on the radar. A few showers and some lightning offshore, but largely has faded out. If we are going to see another round of showers and thunderstorms it will be a few hours from now. The rain chances ramp up in the early hours of monday morning but the maximum chance is still below 50 . Its not often that a scenario like this lines up the same way twice in a row. Its rare that lightning strikes twice. Lightning will be the primary threat with such dry fire fuels, the timing will be as early as two in the morning extending into the first hours of monday morning. Damaging wind is possible again but in terms of small hail, it doesnt look like it will be a concern. The storms should be moving fast enough that the rain wont catch up in time to douse any fires. Of course this is a weird scenario for this time of year, look at the set up that caused all of this, darren is standing by with the nittygritty. Its so weird. The question comes up, how did this happen today . How did we get all these thunderstorms showing up in august . Take a look at this lightning strike. You will see 2500 lightning bolts show up there from three in the morning through 9 00, 2500 moving across the bay area ia lot ofving getheru see them derstorms coming our way. We follow that all the way down to the tropics. That is the leftovers of a tropical storm, all that moisture has got to go somewhere. There were two things over the western United States that were just at the right place at the right time to tap into that and bring it to the bay area. You dont see the first one on the regular satellite but if we put on the water vapor. That was an area of low pressure matched by a re High Pressure driving the heat wave. If you get these two in just the right place, the air is getting pulled up in between them stronger than normal. Meaning there is a lot of force to reach way down into the subtropics and grab whatever happens to be down there and throw it at us. We were in the wrong place at the right time depending on how you want to think of it. Depending on if you like the show. That is the leading issue, taking a look ahead to tomorrow. This is the possibility and this is what paul is talking about, this is not a guarantee, he will go into more detail on what that could actually look like coming up in the complete forecast. These warnings allowed Fire Departments to preposition additional crews but those crews are still spread thin due to more than 10 brushfires that popped up overnight in Alameda County alone. Lets take a look at whats out there right now, nothing happening on the radar in the bay area. Down to the south there were a few showers over the water earlier, lets see if anything tracks up to us. A closer look, no showers out there now, there could be some moisture in the air and its definitely still humid. Thats one of the ingredients, you need moisture, unstable air and some kind of trigger. We usually lack at least one of those in the bay area. Some of the forecast models indicate another round of showers developing, it could be widespread like last night. I think its lower than a 5050 chance of seeing anything measurable in any one particular spot. It will be further west, the east and south bay, the best chance of rain will be a little further west along the peninsula and into the north bay. These computer models arent perfect. They give us an idea but that doesnt mean it will be raining over Sonoma County tomorrow morning but where the best chances will be focused including that higher fire threat. Things should calm down into tomorrow afternoon and darren will have more on that in a moment. We are focusing more on the north bay for the greatest potential of frequent lightning, late tonight into early tomorrow morning. That means we need to be on fire alert, the whole bay area is included in the red flag warning continuing into 11 00 tomorrow morning. Just a couple of lightning strikes is all it takes. The other big story along with the storm chances, is the heat. Darren has more on the continuation of this oppressive heat wave. With all of that and the thunderstorms and the red flag warning, lets not forget tomorrow and tuesday will be the two worst days of this heat wave. Lets sort out whos got the warnings, and advisories. There are some differences. Notice the two different colors. I want to focus on the excessive heat warning. A significant risk of heat related illness until wednesday night, concord, walnut creek, pleasanton, down into san jose. Its the duration of this heat thats now becoming the concern. If we switch our view and look in the bay, you can see a different shading here and a slightly less ominous advisory but still, if you read the fine print, risk of heat related illness is still possible. In the seven day forecast we will have the numbers, they will warm back to 107 tomorrow inland, we stay in the mid80s through the bay for much of that time period. At least by the time we get towards the end of it, we will get the daytime highs out of those low hundreds and back to the low and mid 90s.
