Freak weather, that is all i can say. Reporter a busy day for tree removal crews, coming up i will show you the problems caused by the overnight storm in one bay area city. There is still lightning, just not in the bay area right now. However, that will change by tomorrow morning, another round on the way. We are going to look at that. Thanks for joining us,am n. Lets t breaking we hanew video into neminutes ago, is burning nea 600 acres total. The flames burning just outside of milpitas, near oak ridge roads. The cruiser racing to contain the blaze, fueled by thick brush, sending thick smoke to the reservoir. A bizarre storm putting on quite a show this morning, we have been getting incredible video of thunder and lightning into the newsroom, all day long. This was the scene in San Francisco, and santa rosa, san jose, and sunnyvale. Check this out. They caught was seen at the santa cruz coast this morning. Big question is are we done . Here is darren, with the answer. We are not gone, there is another round tomorrow and we are not done right now if you look at high death doppler, all you have to do is go for the east and you will see there is a lot of lightning through the sierra. Lightning in the sierra in august, that is normal. It happens all the time. Lightning here at home in august, 2500 lightning strikes, like we saw this morning . That is not normal. If we look at the future test, i will play this ahead, into tomorrow, and stop it right there. That is just before 7 am. If you look at that, it looks like an exact repeat of what we had today. Thought that it will play out exactly the same way. Not that we will get exactly the same kind of lightning show, but the ingredients are starting to look more likely for another show tomorrow, to at least some degree with very similar timing, because of that, the red flag warning in effect until 11 pm tomorrow. Originally we had a red flag warning that was supposed to expire at 11 pm today because today wouldve been the only day with the concerns lightning strikes. Now it has been extended to get into tomorrow and forget we still have a heat wave going on. I know today felt better on the temperatures, but the humidity, the humidity made it feel almost worse in places, but the main take away on the heat is the excessive heat warning, that is still in place until wednesday and that is the main headline on the heat if you are in the. I will talk about the heat advisory for the rest of everybody else, and we are going to take a look at how this happened, how did we get such an incredible lightning show here, in the bay area, in august . By the way, that smoke, that is what it looks like over dublin right now. We are not only covering this for the rest of the evening, we will be on this tomorrow morning. Mary will have the latest on the thunderstorms as they come in and gianna will let you know how it is impacting the morning commute. Right now, crews are battling the fiery aftermath of the lightning storms. In contra costa county, four different fires are burning in the round valley regional preserve. Scorching a total of 200 acres. The first fire sparking at 6 am when the lightning struck a ridge above the valley road and the terrain is so rugged, it is making for a very challenging firefight. You watch it and you are like didnt go to the ground . Is it just an airstrike . That was a ground strike so you wait to see if there will be smoke. And there was. In 2 places. Fire crews are working with four wheelers and flying air tankers dropping fire retardant to navigate the remote area, and check out this dramatic video also, this is coming from Alameda County fire crews, a 50 acre inferno roaring through livermore sycamore grove park, a bulldozer crew in the middle of it all, it almost looks like a fireball. Devon has the details. Reporter firefighters had their hands busy overnight with several fires that were sparked by lightning. The fire broke out before dawn, racing through the dry grass and blackening the hillside above the road in livermore. We didnt have much rain this past winter, so pretty dry conditions. The vegetation is there. There definitely is the potential for fire. Reporter parker says he was woken up last night as a rare thunderstorm barreled through his neighborhood. He is thankful the wind didnt spread hot embers on the homes. What you see here is a fire danger and again, a couple with the wind, a little bit of a breeze rolling, so had this been in a more populated area, that couldve been a lot more of a worry there. Reporter you can trace the trail of the fires destructive path, see where it neared a vineyard and where it inched uncomfortably close to at least one building. Before its progress was stopped. The Silver Lining once again is that firefighters were able to contain this to the hillside behind me successfully preventing it from spreading to some homes in the valley below. In livermore, devon, kpix 5. So many small fires broke out in some places, this is timelapse video from our exclusive sales force camera, showing some of the smoke. That has prompted an air quality advisory for the greater bay area, it will be in effect for tomorrow. Across the bay area about 30,000 people are still without power at this hour, mostly because of the storm. And most are in the south bay with 19,000 outages, in the east bay about 10,000, some of those are heat related. On the peninsula, about 2000 without power. If that is not enough, pg e is urging customers to conserve as much energy as possible. With the unusually warm temperatures, more people are staying home because of the virus, some of the power grids just cant keep up with the electrical demand. So, a statewide alert is in effect from 3 pm until 10 pm now through wednesday, the goal of course, to avoid rolling blackouts and here is how. Anything that folks can do whether it is to limit the use of their airconditioning if they have that, by drawing their shape and trying to keep their house as cool as possible until maybe later in the day, to avoiding certain typical household chores like running your washing machine or your dishwasher, things like that will really help. Crews are busy cleaning up from the storm, we are live in San Francisco where toppled trees left a big mess behind. Reporter a big mess indeed, the good news is, no reported injuries that we have heard of, but we understand at least three cars were damaged by downed tree limbs across the city, now this is one of those sites, you can see why, police have shut down this one block here, a lot of tree limbs on the ground here, right now, they are just trying to clean everything up. Witnesses heard loud crackling sounds before the large limbs fell onto this streets around 8 30 am. This witness thought it landed on someone, it was just a parked car. No one inside. Reporter all across San Francisco, tree limbs resting on sidewalks, and some landing in the middle of the street. This large limb fell and damaged a powerline near the intersection of mcallister and fillmore streets. A blocked mcallister street and forced them to reroute buses. A block over, on steiner, the wilson surveyed the damage on the suv. The whole top is crushed and. Reporter neighbors shared photos of the branches that landed on their suv. It is a great family car, so it will be tough. That was really a surprise. It was such a hot and my stay. At midnight i heard the storm coming in. Reporter one neighbor had called the city repeatedly in the last six months to rebuild remove this tree. It was around 2 30 am, there was a huge crush and boom with bright lights. Reporter many of the reports were on downed limbs, the ground is dry and there is not enough moisture for the winds to uproot the larger trees, the winds did topple some smaller trees. Unheard of, a thunderstorm in San Francisco in the middle of august. Reporter these crews have been extremely busy going from spot to spot, to spot. Keep in mind, this tree came down or tree limb actually came down around 8 30 am. They got here around 4 pm and they have been making Good Progress but it is just not enough, not enough cruise and not enough people to clean up all the mess in the city of San Francisco, they say they are working their best to try to get to all of the spots. Santos cant explain the phenomenon other than the fact that it looks like a ball of lightning. Sometimes, it does leave behind a sulfur smell. And professional photographer, matt, sent us this incredible or, t that something . There hat of this happening over the past 12re to come. There is more to come tomorrow morning. Funny thing on this, it will be almost the same exact timing. I was seeing that, it looks like it is being thrown off. I want to get into exactly what he means by that. It is a decaying Tropical Storm, well to our south. You can get a lightning show like we had here in the bay area in august. You have to have a lot of really unique things come together in just the right way. First of all, that is a look on the doppler. I want to give you the wider view, we will come back and show you what this looks like today, as we were streaming all of the clouds, right over the bay area. As we were doing this today, we had to go all the way down to the south, to find where all of that stuff was coming from. There is the Tropical Storm brian was talking about. In fact it looks like a mess of clouds but if we put the infrared, now you can see it. All of the colors circulating, this is feeding our weather right now. It couldnt do it on its own no, there were a couple of other things working in just the right way. So that we could pull that moisture into the bay area. What watch what happens as we leave the satellite, you can see a counterclockwise spin right here, that is the area of low pressure sitting off the coast, which is working with the real driver, of what is going on right now. Is really Strong Center of High Pressure sitting over the southwest, you can see how everything is spinning clockwise, that is the bully in the atmosphere are now. But because we have this area of low pressure right over here, caught in between the two, the flow has a lot of pull right now. A lot of strength to really reach down into those subtopics, and pull whatever happens to be down there are way. And what happens to be down there, is the leftovers of that Tropical Storm which has fallen apart. If we play this ahead, to 6 45 am tomorrow, in other words, the same time you probably got woken up this morning, by the line of thunderstorms that got pulled into the bay area, that is what we have coming our way. Now we are not going to get to specific your on the details, this kind of a scenario is so unusual, and so rare, that the forecast models have a really hard time with it. Didnt do so good with this mornings, right now there is a higher degree of confidence in these forecast models that we have another set up very similar coming our way tomorrow, we will keep an eye very closely on that and i will have updates. In the meantime the heat wave continues. Here is tomorrows numbers, we will be in the mid90s in the south bay, san jose goes to 96. We will see temperatures work their way back up to 108 tomorrow in concord. 104 in livermore. As we go back over towards the east bay right on the water, there is oakland going to 89. We will hit 97 in san rafael, 99 in santa rosa, could be a lot worse, but it is still hot, i know. And the humidity into this, and it feels a lot worse. When we talk about that excessive heat warning, in place until wednesday evening, you have to factor all of that in. This can really do a number on you.
