From the makers of a Beautiful Mind comes i have a good brain. A good brain. Youre a genius he thought things that no one else thought. Im an extremely stable genius. Donald trumps very, very large brain. I know words. I have the best words. Person, woman, man, camera, tv. This november, this guy is up for reelection for president. I have, like, a good memory because im cognitively there. A good brain, coming to a person, woman, man, camera, tv near you. Announcer its a late show with Stephen Colbert. Tonight, r. N. C. Ya plus, stephen welcomes ava duvernay kristen bell and musical guest ben folds featuring jon batistd homin. And now live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen lets get started, ready . We arready. Stephen are you ready to go, peter magee . Yes, but youre inappropriately dressed. Stephen my 91yearold fatherinlaw wants to know why im inappropriately dressed. Im perfectly appropriately dressed because they can only see me from the waist up. They dont know im wearing sandals and shorts. evie laughing now, youve blown it youve blown it, old man lets go, here we go. Here we go stephen professional show business. clears throat welcome to a late show. Im your host Stephen Colbert. Folks, unfortunately, there was another terrible milestone in the pandemic. Because today, the United States surpassed 4 million coronavirus infections. So today, donald trump held another of his virusside chats and he had a bombshell announcement. After previously moving the convention from North Carolina to jacksonville, solely so he could have the sort of big crowd that Health Experts wouldnt allow in North Carolina, he made this decision. I told my team its time to cancel the jacksonville, florida, component of the g. O. P. Convention. Stephen time to cancel the jacksonville component . Thats the component. as trump ive decided to cancel the pasta component of the spaghetti dinner. Instead, well all be sucking marinara through a straw on zoom. Sir, steve colbert, cbs, why did you make this decision . I just felt it was wrong, steve, to have people going to what turned out to be a hot spot. You know, when we chose it, it was not at all hot, it was free. And all of a sudden, it happened quickly. It happens quickly, and it goes away, and it goes away quickly. Stephen as trump we never thought jacksonville would become a hot spot because i have heard the virus is transmitted primarily through breathing, and my understanding is the people of jacksonville exclusively vape. A lot of medical professionals were telling me that cherry cola vape juice would just wipe this thing right out. But trump assured a worried nation that hell still get his time to ramble in front of a microphone. Ill still do a Convention Speech but in different form. Stephen as trump yes, ill still do a speech but in a different form. Perhaps i will take the form of a ravenous wolfheaded creature or maybe a giant bloodthirsty bird who shrieks through a razor sharp beak, or maybe an obscenely bloated spider shape with a hideous human face who devours light and spins its webs of darkness to tangle every flicker of human hope in my cocoon of madness and despair. And i will still not lose one evangelical vote. Trump was also on the tv last night talking to foxs dr. Marc siegel, and he immediately addressed the question on everyones mind. Is his brain broke . See, hes been harping on for weeks now about this cognitive test he took, and just to remind you, its not a hard test. It includes questions like, name these animals. as trump well, thats easy, ill call the first one corey, the second one there ill call lance, and the last one cory ii. A lot of people have made fun of his bragging about passing this tmpanted to demonstrate just how hard the test really is. The first questions are very easy. The last questions are much more difficult. Like a memory question. Its, like, youll go person, woman, man, camera, tv. So theyd say, could you repeat that . So, i said, yeah. So, its person, woman, man, camera, tv. Stephen forget make America Great again. I think its time for a new hat. But despite how simple it appears, trump was proud of his accomplishment. Ia stephen oh, yeah, there are points. Its all part of the game show, so you think you can keep your car keys. Trump warns, it gets harder from there. Now hes asking you other questions, other questions. And then, ten minutes, 15, 20 minutes later, they say, remember the first question, not the first, but the tenth question . Give us that again. Can you do that again . And you go, person, woman, man, camera, tv. They say, thats amazing. How did you do that . Doors d tht because trumps talking about something called the montreal cognitive assessment. Its not an intelligence test. In fact, getting a perfect score merely signifies that the testtaker probably does not have a cognitive impairment. Im going to need something stronger than probably for the person who has the nuclear codes. Wait, unless those are the nuclear codes. Person, woman, man, camera, tv. Person woman, man, camera, tv. alarms this is drop kick with a red dash alpha message. Break. Break. Person, woman, man, camera, tv, launch, launch. explosion stephen okay, i feel better now. Then, trump issued a challenge to joe biden. You go person, woman, man, camera, tv. How did you do that . I do it because i have, like, a good memory. Because im cognitively there. Now, joe should take that test. Stephen america is in for the worst debates in history. as trump person, woman, man, camera, tv. as biden railroad, scranton, corn pop, barack obama come on, jack i think biden is clearly more mentally stable than trump, but even if he wasnt, i would still vote for him because i dont care if we have to weekend at bernies this thing just shove a stick up his keester and put him on the white house lawn like a scarecrow at least hed let us hear from dr. Fauci now, the rest of the interview wasnt exactly a cavalcade of cranium. For instance, tuesday, the president made a big show about restarting his coronavirus briefings to prove that now he was really taking the pandemic seriously. Then one day later, when hes asked about covid testing, he said this i personally think its overrated. It makes us look bad. But think of it, if instead of 50 million we did 25 million, weve got half the number of cases. The cases would be down. Stephen yeah, what you dont test for, cant hurt you. Like, if trump never took the cognitive test, we would never know to be this disturbed. Trumps trying to argue that the rise in testing completely explains the rise in cases, but the average number of tests conducted has grown by 80 , while daily case counts have grown by 215 . Now, i think 215 is higher than 80. Lets see. Person, woman, man, camera, tv. Yeah, yeah it is then trump turned his attention to White House Task force coordinator and School Librarian who forgot to bring the puppets, dr. Deborah birx. Shes an unbelievable woman, a woman of tremendous substance and style, frankly. She has an amazing style. She walks into the room, and she can take a scarf and do 15 things with it. Stephen as trump one of my favorites is when she takes the scarf and puts it in front of her face and, shes gone then all of a sudden, the scarf comes down and shes back. Its like, where did she go . Nobody knows. I also like the one where she puts the scarf in front of her face and she shakes and rocks back and forth for a while and then when she take the scarf down, the scarf is all wet. What does she do . Does she have a little glass of water hidden back there . I dont know. All im saying is she is an incredible woman person man camera tv. The conversation then moved onto coronavirus lockdowns. Now, trump has said he was especially concerned about the mental and physical health of one guy on tv who sounded a little familiar i watched some of these guys. I watched well i wont say it because its not somebody i have a lot of liking or respect for, but a certain comedian that has been locked in his house for a long period of time. And hes, like, withered away. Hes lost the whole deal. Hes lost the wit, hes lost so much. Stephen okay, i dont think its totally out of line to think hes talking about me. Not a lot of comedians are still doing shows right now. Kimmels off for the summer, fallons already back in his studio. Im the one still locked in my house. So i have just one thing to say to Donald Trump Thanks for watching, sir i got to say, at 74, youre really bringing the youth demo to cbs. But i shouldnt be surprised youre a viewer. My show does features everything you love person, woman, man, camera, tv i just wish i could watch the president watching me. as trump i tell you, i used to like the guy, but his imitation of me does not sound like me at all. I sound like this, okay, but hes always like im donald trump, but that is not what i sound like. We also heard from the man trump hopes to challenge on can you point to the elephant, Presumptive Democratic nominee joe biden, seen here explaining that youve got to leave the nose free for some hairsniffin. Yesterday, biden appeared at a virtual town hall and had this to say about trump what President Trump has done in going his spreading of racism, the way he deals with people based on the color of their skin, their national origin, where theyre from is absolutely sickening. Weve had racists, and theyve existed, and theyve tried to get elected president. Hes the first one that has. Stephen okay, biden said donald trump is the first racist president. Okay and im being told we have a response from Andrew Jackson hot diggity woodrow wilson, get in here were in the clear what do you want, im watching birth of a nation. Biden says were not racist oh, wow call tricky dick and all the slaveowners, its party time hot damn, put on some yeezy, fellas i wanna sing all the steen ving srtsws. D iasa d. C. You know, i spend a lot of time here composing the newsiest violin arpeggios, topical arco cellos, and frontpage ostinato woodwinds to create the symphony of jokes that is my monologue. But sometimes, sometimes folks, i like to take some leftover ambient noise, record a couple old washing machines on a broken walkman, and throw marbles across some piano strings to create the experimental electroacoustic soundbucket of news that is my segment. Professor, im not saying my dog ate my homework. Im just saying, my hoagie hacked my computer. laughter heres the photo the student sent to the professor as proof immediately after the incident. Not to be confused with our third album, which was called eponymous. Its a common mistake. Quarantinewhile, Major League Baseball returned tonight after i tape, and while the stadium stands will be empty, viewers at home this weekend may not realize it, because fox sports is debuting a new technology that digitally fills the stands with fans for each game. Hi, ava. Hello, hi, stephen. Stephen nice to see you again. Thanks for being here. Im glad to be here, with yoe autiful offices i think . Yes. Stephen oh, i love the color palette. All right, now, you became friends with congressman john lewis while directing selma. He meant a lot to a lot of people, to the world. U . Ell, yw even know if id say friends because i was always kind of genuflecting and bowing, and just i couldnt quite get myself together. We spent a lot of time together during the making of selma and he was instrumental in my writing of that script and throughout production and post, and we presented it to the world together, and so we were able to spend a lot of time, and i was able to ask him a lot of questions about life, you know, about the way i should approach my work and think about it and history. And so, i think my thought about his legacy is more about personal advice that he gave to me. And one of the things that he said to me that really has stuck with me in the last few days since his transition was i said, you know, what do i do . I dont know what i was talking about. Conan do i do he said, ava, do everything. And im like, do everything . What does that mean . He was like, yoda, do everything. And then he left. And im like, do everything . What does that mean . And so ive really been pondering that question of do everything. And that, you know, the answer to that is what im striving to figure out, but thats one of the gifts that he left for me. So on some days do everything means one thing, on another day, it means something else, but its kept me going, and im going to miss him. Stephen now, your doc 13th was released in 2016, but in the last few weeks its been one of netflixs most watched programs. Yeah. Stephen and i understand the rest of the month, you can stream it for free on youtube as well. Yeah. Stephen is that true . Yes, its true. I think theyre doing it for the rest of the summer for folks to to find i think, you know, after a lot of the, you know, al instigated by the vicious murder of george floyd, that folks were searching for, you know, some grounding, some context, and you know, im fortunate and glad 13th was available for people. Stephen the film deals a lot with the idea that law and order becomes a rallying cry for certain politicians, and trump is using that to define his presidency right now. He already used it, but hes leaning very hard on it in his attempt to get reelected. What should people know about the Historical Context of that phrase as a Political Tool and an idea of control . Yeah, its a page from a very old playbook. Thats why the fact that folks are falling for it feels so pedestrian. And, you know, i hear it right now, and its so defanged for me and i hope that is what 13th does, it kind of takes the fangs out of that language. Really, it speaks to the criminalization of black people, the idea that and the growth and maturation of the idea that black people are inherently criminals who need to be controlled through mechanisms of social control that are most prominent in the criminal Justice System of prison and incarceration systems. And, so, you know, theres just a lot to know there. Once you know it you hear those words differently and you know that theyre a dog whistle for a certain brand of thinking that is steeped in, you know, an absence of justice. And, so, like i said, im really we drill down into that in 13th. We go through the history, and we do, you know, a sequence where were really just showing that trump is really mirroring these old ideas in ways that are pretty basic, yet desperately violent. And, so and emotionally violent. And, so, folks just have to educate themselves. Its not going away. Its not going to stop. Hes going to lean into it because certain people who hear it and are activated by it, and so we have to be the ones who hear it and are able to nutralize it within ourselves. And so its just important that people to pick up books and read, but if you dont want to do that, i took all the books and put it in one primer, its an old movie called 13th playing for free on youtube, check it out. Stephen youve started a new initiative called the Law Enforcement accountability project, what is that . Yeah, its called l. E. A. P. , yup, Law Enforcement accountability project. Leapaction. Org. Like ive said, im used to watching a lot of this footage, but something about the George Floyd Murder really knocked me to my knees, and i had to ask myself, what was different about this . And for me, it was bearing witness to that officer looking right into the camera, looking right into the camera as he murdered him, as a man begged for his life, as people around him begged for hg r the camera. Thats why this has affected me. Usually hell be obscured by some grainy Surveillance Footage or on a body cam where the officer is behind the camera. And so theres something about the direct framing of him that led me to think, wow, i never see these officers who kill unarmed black people and, wow, where are they and what are their names . And so l. E. A. P. Is basically saying, we dont believe that Police Unions are holding bad cops accountable. We dont see Courts Holding these cops accountable. We the people as taxpayers can do it, and as artists were doing it by making sure they cannot disappear, that we see them, that we know their names, that we know where they are, and we understand that were not allowing them to kind of recede behind this blue wall of silence. So basically its a fund, that funds work by artists of different disciplines about raising awareness about officers who have committed crimes against black people. So often we say the names of the victims, and their names should be known, but we cant allow these officers to slip away and disappear, and so thats what l. E. A. P. Is about. Stephen well, i mean, since this is your intention of this organization now, how do you react to the president sending in federal shock troops, shall we call them, with no identification, hauling people without probable cause into unmarked vans to take them who knows where . Its jawdropping. The thing thats been challenging for me is kind of the lack of press coverage, as this is the number one story. I mean, i know were in the middle of a pandemic and theres a lot is happening, but its felt to me there has not been the kind of outrage and response, and the outrage is going to come from the coverage of it. And so i turn on every sie and so i turn on every single network. Im looking at everything, and this is not the first story or the second story or the third story. And american citizens are being taken in unmarked vans by, you know, people, who knows who they are, dressed in military attire with militarygrade weapons. I mean, weve seen the video ive seen it on social much more than im seeing it in the press. Why do you think that is . Why is this not getting covered in that way . Stephen i dont know. Because i havent seen it much either after the initial times. I assume its still going on because those troops are still in portland. Absolutely, and expanding into other states. So i just have to say and im so happy youre asking about it and were talking about it theres something happening in portland that trump has saidh will be duplicated in other states, in other cities. You know, folks have already been dispatched in these cities, federal officers, and this is serious. This is at the very core of what we all say. I mean, this is not even a republicandemocrat issue. This is this is what our country has supposedly gone into other countries to fight against. Stephen well, in the federalist papers, it says, to paraphrase, if someone can pop a bag over your head and take you away without cause, you have no other rights. Amen. Well, thats where we are. And, like, it should be more top of mind for us. Im so glad you asked about it and that youre talking a bit. Stephen well, im so glad you were here. Thanks for being here, ava. What a happy, cheerful segment weve had. laughter stephen weve matched the times. Weve matched the times. Stephen now, the last time i saw you was at the ed sullivan theater with 500 people jumping up and cheering your name and then your lovely husband, dax shepard, came on after you and had the same thing. And so i hope you will enjoy the next few minutes. It is a show we enjoy doing, but its a little held together with bailing wire and duct tape, so lets do this thing i like a small i like an intimate vibe. Stephen now, you guys have been, like all of us, quarantined, secluded here, dealing with the covid for four months, and youve got two young girls, right . How old are they . I dont know. Stephen okay, good. Dont five and seven, i think. laughter stephen dont pressure them by giving them a number i dont. Stephen just let them decide. Because the numbers change every year stephen yes, its confusing. What . Waste of numbers, in my opinion. They should geto six and stop. Yeah, they are five and seven and they are very talkative. And its like having its truly like having two crazy parakeets stapled to your shoulder all afternoon where theyre just talking so much. Stephen that sounds painful, the staples. Do you have any alone time . Because now you never get to leave the house at this point. I dont, sometimes. We tried to steal away for a hike the other day, and, so, my sister was here watching the kids. We masked up and we were, like, well just walk down the street, theres a great hike outside the house. And on our way out the door our sevenyearold was standing in the doorway, and she held it open and she goes, uh, are you going to do a sex . Stephen laughs and, um stephen wow wow by surprise. Stephen wow weve talked to her about what sex is, but we never talked about us doing it. Stephen yeah. And dax just really quickly said, wed love to but its illegal publicly, bye and closed the door. Stephen wow, wow. I like the singular of that, a. A sex. Yeah, a sex, are you going to do a sex . Stephen yes, yeah. I go i go do a sex when i make the disco. Yeah. Or on a hike. Stephen what are they doing . How are the kids keepingesus reoo, when theyre confinedme. evieaughing wouldnt that be nice. You know what they do, and this is funny, because we have been sleeping in lately, like till 8 30, 9 00 stephen whistles and they can get up now and not have to i dont have to worry about them, you know, turning the oven on. They know not to. And lately, they like to make forts, but they have been expanding into moving furniture, so i will wake up at 8 30, and none of the furniture that was in the room previously will be in the room. In fact the other morning they took stephen their room. Their room will be empty of furniture. Any room of the house. Nothings off limits. Okay, theyre tyrants. But the other day they put all of the furniture in their room except their bunk bed, because its too heavy to move, but they have little ikea bookshelves. Stephen sure. They put everything into the bathroom. So every single thing in their room which they share was shoved into the bathroom. And i woke up and walked into their room and i opened the door to the bathroom and it was like a john hughes movie. Where you know, like, in uncle buck where john candy opens the door to the closet and a bowling ball falls onto his head and everything comes out. And i was like, you guys, this may seem funny to you now but you have to put it all back. And they go, we cant lift it. Can you believe that . Stephen but, but i said, well how did you get it in . Stephen thats exactly right. They didnt have an answer. Stephen did you make them do it . We both, we did i did most of it. Stephen so they won. laughs was there a reason . Did they have were they making a clubhouse, or was it really just to prank mom . Bored theyre just bored. Everybodys bored, stephen. Theyre just bored. laughter stephen well they shouldnt be. May i have this . No one should be bored, because you have a new book, the world needs more purple people. Okay, who are the purple people and why do we need them, kristen bell . Well, we need them because this book you know, you write childrens books two years in advance. My friend ben and i two years ago were sitting around at a family dinner, and we reed r were servin, mostly politic. We were just we had a personal experience of seeing this very polarizing political culture unfold in front of our children. They were they were seeing red versus blue everywhere. They were seeing teams. Stephen sure. I know my husband studied anthropology. We have software thats outdated that tells us to find an us and them, and thats because previously it helped us as humans. But now it doesnt serve anything, and all the fighting felt like too much, so we wanted to give some language, some social identity language that allowed our kids to look towards other human beings and not just see enemies. So, you know, red plus blue equals purple. Stephen yes. And to say that purple people come in every color. And its the idea that you can think for yourself, you canstanu can findin enreouan a lesson for all of us. Im worried about the purple people eaters. Did that occur to you about the oneeyed, onehonored flying purple people eaters when you named this . I barely remember that song, and im hoping that maybe when we can stephen im 78 years old. I should reveal to, you im 78 years old. Oh, god, you look great stephen thank you very much. Thank you very much. Its all the nivea i use. Yeah the creams.
