Reporter she is supposed to be heading back to Sacramento State right now but instead she is at home in pacifica and her mom is paying for her apartment near campus. I dont think it is fair. I am looking at it from their point of view also and i dont think it is fair that there is not any type of leniency. Reporter carol has been out of work since april and she works at Alaska Airlines and has enough money saved in her college fund to cover the apartment but she was hoping she would not have to do that. Reporter for legal advice is try to avoid seeking legal advice and pay a fee to get out of the lease if at all possible. She said that is likely what is best for both parties especially if you really dont have the money to pay for the entire year. May be come to a deal upfront to take a lesser amount of money instead of going through an expensive and time intensive process of suing a student and never maybe being able to collect on that. Reporter students should check their lease for a force majeure or act of god clause. It is where but if you have one you can terminate your lease due to forces outside of your control like a global pandemic. If you dont have that clause, you can offer to y a fee. If that does not work, you can give your landlord a 30 day notice to vacate which legally incentivizes them to try to replace you, but until you find a sub letter, you are still on the hook to pay rent. Again i dont want bad credit and i did not really have a choice.
