The first day of school for the south bays Largest School district begins in just few hours for many of the districts teachers, a last minute deal about working from home left them scrambling. This coming after the union made assurances to the district that they would maintain the same level of teaching quality. Now teachers said theyre relieved they wont have to report inperson for the first day the union had criticized that requirement as being unsafe the inflexible in tight quarters. The district said it was important to get a commitment from the teachers that they would put in the same amount of energy and effort at home as they would on campus. The agreement was an assurance that the quality of instruction of our teachers at home would be the same quality as them teaching in the classroom. There were a few bad apples in the spring who literally did nothing. And those parents screamed really loud. Reporter the union admits when the lockdown happened back in march, the switch to online teaching was rough for some faculty. But said the districts plan to force everyone back on campus was punishing everyone for the actions of a few teachers. The Trump Administration says the u. S. Will purchase 100 million doses of the experimental vaccine. That is part of the federal governments operation warp speed. That deal is worth about 1. 5 billion. Theres a process that takes place at the fda. Its not one person who says were good to go. You know, it goes through a bunch of data scientists who look at the data and compare it to other data and they render these you know, recommendations. If testing goes well a vaccine will possibly be available to the public early next year. Meantime, synthetic antibodies that researchers believe neutralize the coronavirus have been created at ucsf and could be available for use in nose sprays or inhalers within a few months if Clinical Trials go well. A suburban high school is expected to be sanitized today after a dozen students and two teachers tested positive for covid19. Officials say as a precaution, nearly 300 students and staff are now in quarantine. And Distance Learning will start tomorrow. A photo of several students there recently went viral because it showed them in large tight groups without any masks. Face coverings are recommended but not required in the school district. The pac 12 conferences attempt wasnt enough. The groups leaders just decided to postpone all sports until the end of the year. The pac 12 ceo group voted unanimously yesterday. Their reasons to scrap the fall sports season, travel, testing and Health Concerns brought on by pandemic. Stanford defensive back strayjohn butter says he understands the medical concerns for the postponement. But this year is especially important because he is a senior. It was really tough. An unusual start with a last minute agreement between the district and the union to allow teachers to work from home. Under the terms of this new agreement, teachers must submit a form and then register their decision beforehand. Now the district said it was important to get a commitment from the union that teachers would put in the same energy and effort at home as they would on campus.
