Gayle and tony are off. Michelle and vlad are with us. Thank you for having us. On to the news now. Half a dozen states in the midwest are cleaning up this morning after a rare storm with 100mileanhour winds that tore across hundreds of miles. The socalled derecho packed the power of a hurricane a thousand miles from any ocean. It caused significant damage across iowa and parts of wisconsin and illinois yesterday. Adriana diaz is in chicago. Adriana, whats the damage there . Good morning, michelle. Were in the neighborhood of rogers park on the north side of chicago. The National Weather service says a tornado passed through this neighborhood. Look what it left behind. There are downed trees on top of cars all across this area. Then as a tornado pushed east it went over lake michigan, which is just a few blocks away. The weather moved in quickly. It struck fast and tore through the midwest in a matter of hours. The downpour moved into iowa monday leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Officials issued travel advisories as the storm downed trees and blocked roads. Pummeled by the high winds, a childs clubhouse started rolling like a tumbleweed. There were people inside this hockey arena when the roof was blown away. No one was hurt. A des moines postal worker also escaped injury when his truck was crushed by a falling tree. I heard a whistle. I never heard a siren. But i think it was the wind whistling because it was blowing really hard. Reporter when the storm reached wisconsin it uprooted trees and downed power lines. Huge branches crashed into streets and houses. The winds came without warning. I was hearing all these different sounds. I turned and looked out the window and realized it was a fullfrontal force of the storm coming in. Reporter emergency crews worked to right a semi truck overturned on the highway. The storm also uprooted trees here in chicago. And more than 100 miles away in molin, illinois. Three or four blocks down, a real big tree down on a power line. Reporter there were some reports of injuries in iowa where people are trapped in buildings and inside cars. About 100 miles west of here in dixon, illinois, the National Weather service said wind gusts topped 90 miles per hour. Anthony . Wow. Some very dramatic pictures, adriana. Thank you. Russian president Vladimir Putin says this morning that his country is now using the worlds first coronavirus vaccine. Putin says his daughter has received it and is doing well. Authorities say russian medical workers, teachers and others in highrisk groups will get the vaccine first. Our dr. David agus is with us. What do we know about this vaccine, and how much testing has it actually been given so far . Anthony, june 18s, they started with about 38 volunteers at the Current Administration that was that was approved in russia. So we know in those 38 individuals that there was an immune respons. The state reported, not scientific journals, the state reported, but we dont know whether it actually protects, and we dont know what will happen when large numbers of people are inoculated. Its akin to a sputnik moment. Big proclamation but im not sure all the data are there yet. Does this change how the u. S. And others might approach vaccine development, david . I certainly hope it doesnt change what any country does in terms of vaccine development. Most countries are doing phase three studies. That is looking, does this vaccine actually protect and reduce the symptoms of covid19 by at least 50 in not knowing it works, you know, its very hard to go forward. But they are starting to manufacture. Realize theyve Just Announced approval. They have not manufactured for the 150 Million People in russia. It will take them many, many months to manufacture enough doses. Its a twopart shot. So they need 300 million doses for the country. Its going to take a long time. You think the testing so far for the russian vaccine is inadequate . Right now its almost a political statement, right . There is no test that shows this protects anybody from covid19. All right. David agus, thank you very much. Vlad . Anthony, this morning were learning new information about how a briefing by President Trump on the pandemic was suddenly interrupted by the secret service. An agent led the president out of the room for a few minutes after a shooting near the white house. A secret Service Official said last night that a uniformed officer shot a man who confronted him saying he had a gun. Ben tracy was in the White House Briefing room as this happened. He joins us now. Ben, what did you see . Well, you know, as the president was talking, we could tell somebody was going on. We could see the secret Service Agents running through the windows of the Briefing Room and the agent thats in the room guarding the president , he was talking into the microphone in his sleeve. He then walked up to the podium and told the president , it was time to go. Looks like theyre just about going to be topping records hopefully soon. Just minutes into his Coronavirus Briefing, President Trump looks sursurprised as a secret Service Agent told him he had to quickly leave the room. Excuse me. Were going to have to step outside. Outside the white house, just one block away, a man was shot by the secret service. There was a shooting outside of the white house, and seems to be very well under control. Reporter overnight, the agency said the suspect who was a 51yearold male ran aggressively towards a secret Service Officer outside the white house. The man had allegedly told the officer he had a weapon. The suspect withdrew an object from his clothing. He then crouched into a shooters stance as if he was about to fire a weapon. Reporter thats when the officer fired at the suspect hitting him in the torso. A source tells cbs news that the object the subject held and allegedly pointed was not a gun. Back inside, President Trump returned to the podium minutes later seemingly unfazed. Do i seem rattled . Reporter he also had a positive outlook on the countrys battle against coronavirus. Ange at the end of a fairly short period of time, youll be in very good shape all over the country. Reporter not only does the United States have more than 5 million cases, far more than any other country, there is also new data showing from july 9th to august 6th, more than 170,000 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in children. A 90 increase over four weeks. Still President Trump says he has no second thoughts about pushing schools to reopen. Repeating his unfounded claim that children are not really at risk. But for the most part, they do very well. Reporter now the suspect in that shooting near the white house was transported to the hospital, but we dont know his condition this morning. Meanwhile, the administration is reportedly considering a new rule that could block american citizens and permanent residents from returning to the country if they are suspected of having coronavirus. If this comes to be, it will likely be challenged in court. Michelle . All right, ben, thank you. Two of the Top Five College football conferences will reportedly cold me lly hold mee amid speculation they may cancel or postpone the Upcoming Season due to the coronavirus. Espn says officials from the big 10 and pac12 are scheduled to discuss the upcoming athletic calendar. Their decision could touch off a wave of cancellations. At the same time, a growing number of players led by clemsons star quarterback Trevor Lawrence are joining a social Media Campaign in hopes of saving the season. Our lead National Correspondent David Begnaud is outside the Miami Dolphins stadium in south florida. David, why are these decisions happening so suddenly . Well, time is running out. Look, the College Football season is supposed to start in 18 days. And end with the National Championship game next january here at Hard Rock Stadium in south florida. But there was an emergency meeting of the commissioners of the five biggest football conferences. And after that, theres a growing suspicion, should we say belief, that they may cancel this years season because the pandemic is simply out of control. Launch down field. Whos got it . Touchdown, lsu reporter that was seven months ago when the last College Football game was played in new orleans. The next game may not come until 2021, as the coronavirus pandemic puts the season in jeopardy. Sources have told me at this time it kind of looks like the band right now playing on the titan titanic. Reporter thats bret mcmurphy. He expects the Major Conferences will cancel or delay their seasons within the next three weeks. Not only are College Athletic departments going to be decimated but also a lot of College Towns economically. Reporter there are two smaller conferences, the midamerican conference and the mountain west, that have already canceled their fall seasons. And players have already tested positive at large programs like the university of texas, Michigan State and clemson. Now several players have turned to social media to try and save the season. Using we want to play. They got the attention of President Trump. He tweeted, the student athletes have been working too hard for their season to be canceled. Covid was definitely serious. Reporter andrew baseli is an offensive lineman at Florida State. Although he and his family all caught the virus back in the spring, the 23yearold senior is part of the we want to play campaign. He says hes confident the university can keep its student athletes safe. Football is what i love to do. We just worked very hard in the offseason to prepare ourselves for this fall season. Reporter mcmurphy acknowledges the risks may be too great for some schools. Bottom line is, theyre not going to take a chance because of the unknown impact of covid. Kind of similar to 20 years ago. We really didnt know the longterm impact of concussions. Reporter theres a handful of College Athletes who have developed a heart condition that is potentially linked to covid19. And thats one reason you have got gothese university presiden and athletic departments concerned about holding the season. The acc, the conference the university of miami and Florida State both play in, they have said theyre moving forward with the season. Its going to be interesting to see how this ends up all playing out. Will indeed, david. Thank you. Activists plan to protest Police Violence tonight in chicago where officers are protecting Downtown Stores after a looting spree early yesterday. Police say more than 100 people were arrested and 13 officers injured while dozens of stores were ransacked. One parking lot was littered with empty boxes of stolen goods. This wasnt actions of people who were poor and trying to engage in activity to feed their families. This was straightup criminal activity. The looting began hours after police shot and wounded a 20yearold black man in a chicago neighborhood. The officers say he fired at them first. His family disputes that. The man is hospitalized and charged with attempted murder. New doorbell camera video captured the moment a huge explosion rocked a baltimore neighborhood. Three row houses were destroyed in yesterdays blast. Damage was reported blocks away. Its thought the explosion may have followed a natural gas leak. Baltimore gas and electric said an inspection in the area last year did not identify any gas leaks. This morning, the Reuters News Agency is reporting that lebanese leaders received a warning last month about explosive chemicals being stored in beiruts port. Those chemicals detonated in a massive blast last week killing more than 160 people. Days of antigovernment protests have followed. Yesterday, the Prime Minister announced his governments resignation. Imtiaz tyab reports from beirut. Reporter it was a literal handing in of a resignation. But no one here was buying the Prime Ministers carefully choreographed show of humility. Protesters bitterly confronted police for a fourth day. Protesters say the resignations are not enough. They want to tear down this system and build something new. They want a revolution. Since the enormous explosion a week ago, lebanons leaders have been almost invisible, helping no one and yet, somehow, the mighty fist of the state is still able to punch back. Protesters say the system is rotten to its core. The Prime Minister is resigning. Is that enough . Its definitely not enough. They dont have our trust. They dont have the confidence. So they are illegitimate. They are not legal. Reporter still, lebanons longest serving leaders, whose negsense protesters say laid waste to the capital, remain in power. And changing the corrupt political system borne out of the ashes of a bitter 15year civil war that ended in 1990, that they benefit from so greatly, wont be easy. But world powers say its what they want. And that the nearly 300 million they promised in aid is tied to political and economic reforms. But will lebanons ruling class change. For those on the streets of the shattered city, not soon enough. The first u. S. Military aid flight arrived last night. But until the government here agrees to any meaningful reform, its hard to see how places like this across beirut will get the help they so desperately need. Imtiaz tyab with thebeirut,. Reporter as you mentioned that former mcdonalds ceo steve evide easterbrook was terminated without cause. He retained 42 million in cash and stock openings. Mcdonalds is suing to get that money back. Mcdonalds claims in a lawsuit filed monday that former ceo Steve Easterbrook lied to company investigators about inappropriate sexual relationships he allegedly had with employees. Last year easterbrook was fired for having an alleged consensual relationship with a female employee, consisting of Text Messages and video calls. At the time he told investigators he had never had a physical sexual relationship with any mcdonalds employee. But according to Court Documents last month mcdonalds received an anonymous report about a second mcdonalds employee who engaged in a sexual relationship with easterbrook while he was ceo. The anonymous report prompted a new investigation into easterbrook which mcdonalds alleges revealed the businessman had sexual relationships with three other mcdonalds employees not including the employee linked to his firing. New york times correspondent and cbs news contributor jody cantor. This is a story with a twist because mcdonalds the top Fast Food Company in the country is now going after its former ceo, not only for having inappropriate relationships in the workplace but for concealing that. Reporter according to the lawsuit investigators found easterbrook sent emails from his corporate account containing dozens of inside, partially inside or sexually explicit photographs and videos of women including employees taken in 2018 and 2019. Im Anthony Mason with Michelle Miller and vladimir doout iuthi. Hurricane winds across the midwest. And covid in the states, dr. Tara narula explains a big summer surge in cases among children and how it could affect backtoschool plans. And major surprise, 23yearold collin more kaikawa talks about winning the pga championship with one amazing shot. First heres todays eye opener at 8 00. Half a dozen states in the midwest are cleaning up after a rare storm, the socalled duratio packed the power of a hurricane. The weather moved quickly and struck fast and tore through the midwest in a matter of hours. Could you tell something was going on, secret Service Agents running through the Briefing Room and the agent guarding the president was talking to the microphone in his sleeve, told the president it was time to go. There was an emergency meeting of the commissioners of the five biggest football conferences and after that, there is a growing suspicion should we say relief they may cancel this years season because the pandemic is out of control. Lebanese Prime Minister announced his governments resignation. Protesters say the resignations are not enough. They want to tear down and make something new. A covid19 mosque that covid massing that has over 3,000 die moppeds on it. Its not just people who refuse to wear masks, there are idiots. We need a button like that. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Gayle and tony are off, so michelle and vlad are here. The man who commissioned that mask wanted it to be the most expensive in the world, imagine that. I wonder if hell take a bargain, let me bargain with him and let me buy it for my mom. Your mom. Somehow i dont think so. Lucky lady. All right, we begin today with a very rare wind storm that raced through more than half a dozen midwestern states, leaving a trail of destruction yesterday. Its called a derecho with the power of a tornado with a wider area. Chicago had serious damage from toppled trees to down power lines. Reporter good morning the National Weather service confirmed a tornado hit this residential neighborhood on the north side of chicago and there are downed trees everywhere. The pickup truck over here, another over here. The hurricaneforce winds lashed out across several states, in des moines, iowa, the storm caused a transformer to explode. Several cities are telling people not to travel because of all the damage. Just northwest of des moines the storm ripped apart a hockey arena roof, there were people inside at the time but no one was hurt. The winds also whipped through wisconsin, badly damaging this neighborhood, about one hour south of milwaukee. A large tree smashed into a camper and a boat but thankfully missed their home. The storm knocked out power to more than half a Million People yesterday, and the cleanup will take a while. Anthony . Thanks, adriana. In just four weeks, the number of coronavirus cases in children soared 90 in the u. S. The American Academy of pediatrics reports almost 180,000 new cases in kids between july 9th and august 6th, based on data from states. More than 380,000 covid19 cases in children have been reported in this country since the pandemic began. Senior medical correspondent dr. Tara narula joins us this morning. Good morning. Good morning. What does the data say about how the virus affects kids . Well, anthony, parents are really struggling with what to do, particularly when it comes to schools, and so we need to give them a realistic understanding of what the data and the science says, and for now, the understanding is that overwhelmingly kids tend to be affected less severely. There are low rates of hospitalizations for kids and when you look at the states in new york city that reported mortality data, kids have accounted for about zero to 0. 4 of the covid deaths in those that reported. Its important to say that when we hear words like kids are immune those words matter, and words like immune are misleading, and inaccurate. When you think about the fact that 9 of all the covid cases in this country are in kids, that kids have been hospitalized, and the 86 children that have died, to hear those words that kids are immune is extremely disheartening for those parents that have suffered those losses. Tara, what is behind this recent surge in cases in kids . Well, certainly anthony were doing more testing now than we were in the beginning. We are going to pick up on more kids. Were now testing not just the sickest of the sick, were testing kids who may be mildly symptomatic, but also the data is really generated from the states, and so it depends on how the states are reporting the data, what theyre releasing publicly, what format theyre reporting data in and how they classify child cases varies from state to state. Some states say its 0 to 14, others states 0 to 24, so were really getting an emerging but incomplete picture of what this looks like for children in this country. You mentioned the issue of kids going back to school, something millions of parents are confronting right now. What does this tell us about the safety of classrooms . Well, i think first of all theres no question its polarizing and weve seen Success Stories both internationally and in this country when you look at certain Day Care Centers and camps and seen failures but in general, i think schools can reopen in certain places and i think most Public Health officials tell you the priority should be to open schools but it depends on three things. First of all, the infection rate the Community Transmission rate in that area of the school has to be low. The school itself has to make sure that theyre putting into place really strong precautions, like having kids in small pods, social distancing, masks, good ventilation, isolation and testing and tracing, and then finally, families really have to look at who their child is. Is their child more vulnerable, do they have an Underlying Health condition . We talk about teachers, too, we need to make sure that we are calling them front line workers and providing them with things like ppe, but i think it can be done in the right setting, in the right places, but theres not a onesizefitsall approach for every part of the country. Dr. Tara narula, thank you very much. Anthony, you have a big story coming up. We have a little sneak peek. Lets take a look. You write in that piece i have the ominous sense that we were eating lobster on the titanic. Umhum. Thats a sinking ship. Unless we recognize the need to build a more equal america, we will be eating lobster on the titanic, because we will all go down. An important point, that is darren walker. He has the Ford Foundation one of the largest philanthropies in the world. Gives away half a billion dollars. 13 billion endowment, they give away half a billion a year and hes calling for radical change in philanthropy because of a rising inequality in the country and he says its a risk to democracy, and we talked to him about all that. Hes a very prominent voice now for change. You got to this story before i could, beat me to it yet we have much more news ahead, including Jill Schlesinger, including teaching kids early about money in their lives. In todays eye on money were look at how and when to teach your children about personal finance. Parents and caregivers play a key role in shaping childrens financial literacy. Research shows money habits are set by the age of 7. One survey found one in four people received no Financial Education from their parents while growing up. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger joins us now with the appropriate advice for every age. Jill, where have you been all my life . I mean, come on. Were a little late with this. Reporter glad were doing it now. You say we should talking to our kids about money when they are as young as 3. Really . What should we be saying . Reporter 3 to 5 years old. You just Start Talking about money and coins just like identifying money. You also want to start to distinguish between things that are free, right, youll play with your friends thats free and something thats costs money, an ice cream cone. I think its really important to also stress that moms going to work, mom goes to work so she can pay for the stuff that costs money. Those are the basic contents of the conversation 3 to 5 years old. Were pretty good at that one. How should parents talk to their preteens. Its more difficult, there wouldnt you say . Reporter i think in middle school its tough. What you want to do is instill this idea about saving for something. So maybe seat goal. I remember when i was 12 years old i want ad pair of high top snackers. My parents had just bought mellow tops. My dad said i guess youll have to save for it. That blew my mind. When you rake your leaves better put some money aside. Die. Saving something for something in the future. What your giving up by saving for that and is it worth it . So these are the kinds of conversations that you have with your middle schoolers. Immediate gratification. Should kids get an allowance and when is the best time to start that . Reporter i think that theres a real split as to whether or not an allowance works. So it has to be that you all agree upon it. I didnt get an allowance and i was all on top of my money as you might imagine. That said if you are going give an allowance start as early as age 6. One thing that personal finance experts do agree upon is that it should not be based on chores. Chores happen because youre a member of the family. You base it on maybe small discretionary spending. So, you know, perhaps its a toy that you would have bought. And then you make sure that the kids understand, you got to use this money to buy that discretionary item. Some parents i think its kind of a great idea they start saying hey you should save some of your allowance and to encourage you to save they create a matching program for every dollar you save, well match 25 cents. That allows you to start the concept of a savings account and introduce interest rates. Thats a great idea. What about High School Kids and their Financial Independence . Reporter well, i think high school is a perfect time to begin conversations about debt and the easiest way to do it is talk about how pcredit card deb can be. We pay that debt off all time. A lot of High Schoolers are work. One of the thing thats important about work, whats the difference between gross pay and net pay. We all remember that first paycheck and wondering who that horrible person fica of that took our money was away. Maybe as early as ninth grade you want to have family conversations about what can this family afford in terms of college funding. Because you want to get the kids mindset before they get down the path of wanting a much more Expensive School than you all can afford. Quickly about college, i know a lot of college age kids out there a quick note about that. Reporter budgeting the important. Credit histories occur with cure credit cards not debit cards. Clearly be very sure that you instill these habits as soon as possible. Money as you grow is a great website part of the Consumer Financial protection bureau. Got to go there. Jill, thanks a lot. This is where we each pick a story we like to share with each other and all of you. So, anthony, you are in pole position. What how far got . Its an honor. I got a big bow quiet of a story pap florist is transforming parts of new york city with what he calls his flower flashes. Louis miller owner of a floral Design Company has been creating surprise flower installations around the city for years. But during the pandemic he started putting up temporary displays near hospitals as a tribute to workers who were on the front lines of the pandemic. Hes continued doing them as a way of inspiring new yorkers to keep pushing through. They are really tuning these things he does. He says now more than ever we need flowers in the city and he says who isnt looking for a little joy. And, boy, i feel that way every day. Have you happened upon them . I havent. I see pictures theres an Instagram Page and they are gorgeous. Originally they were around hospitals. One hospital they made him take it down because he didnt have permission and instead he started giving away flowers to individual workers. Health care workers who started crying when he gave them to him. I got one. Were going back to bay side high. Vlad you know all about this. Saved by the bell is getting a reboot. Are those caffeine pills . At first. They are so exciting. Then it gets even more exciting. After that it gets scary. In the end you get a recording shot. That was the actress from the original series. Shes in the reboot along with mario low embezzle and saved by the bell for those of us who got into it big. 1989 to 1993. We dont know if screech is in the show. Theres an update of a video we showed you yesterday. But we have to say zack morris definitely will be back. So these twins, the william twins, okay, you remember this. We brought this to you yesterday the first time, right, they saw it, they heard this video, phil collins, right . That video went viral. Apparently the viral video got a sales bump. It jumped some 1100 on friday and saturday compared to the previous two days. So, i mean, they are really proving to be quite the teen for folks like phil collins. Thats really cool. I think we should continue to do that, guys. We should pick our favorite oldies songs or songs we grew up and see if we can get a boost in sales for them. Anthony on your twitter page you say you like anything as long as its groovy which i love. Ill give you the o. J. s back stabbers for you. Michele, you get elo, evil women. Ill take it. Evil woman . I love it. Its a great song. Evil woman ill come back. Just wait. Ill wait. Guys heres my talk of the table. Its about worker burn out and fatigue during the pandemic. Last month the jobs website monster found 69 of employees reported burn out while working from home during the pandemic. That is up 35 from may. This comes as the National Unemployment rate fell to 10. 2 in july which is still historically high. Psychiatrist joins us now to talk about the challenges and how to stop the stick na surrounding mental health. Sue, so good to say. Thank you so much for joining us. Let me ask you right off the bat, what is burn out . What is work burn out and why do people feel more vulnerable now . So, burn out is a unique combination ever feeling exhausted from your job, having low energy, having a negative mood or feeling cynical about it and not really feeling as if you have efficacy or agency or your work matters any more and as you said, you know, twothirds of people are feeling this right now and were seeing that this is even more sign the pandemic for a variety of reasons. Were not used to working from home for this long. And let me say that there are some countries in sweden they say 30 of people work remotely. Thats the norm and thats the baseline. Some people tlif. I have a lot of folks telling me this is long and they are missing the Human Connection they would normally get. So what causes burn out . I sometimes get the sense that the ground beneath me is uneven, like im sort of walking on quick sand or on muddy ground, the ground is always shifting. Thats how i feel. So what causes that feeling . Ahha. Yes. So sometimes its a feeling of that theres more work coming in than you can handle. I know that there are a lot of people experiencing a variety of family pressures whether it be if youre at home and taking care of the family and manage Remote Learning or managing somebody who has been sick in your family in whats being thrown at you is more than you can handle. Thats really what the definition when we talk about workplace burn out and i want to say that this is a condition, not necessarily a disorder. It was recognized by the World Health Organization earlier this year and what were seeing is that it is unmanageable or a stress thats not managed properly. Stress is normal. Were all going to experience days where we feel were burning the candle at both edges but theres something about the quality were not able to live up to or meet the demand. A lot of times this happens because our bosses or employers they dont know what were contending with at home, they are not aware or sensitive to the personal life aspect and were not making time for ourselves and taking breaks. All of this, the exalternatival pressures at work and the personal demands, you know, that theres not a balance and theres an overflow in the system if you will. You know, we talked about this before, sue, i think where i told you once that what i try to do when im feeling stressed is i think about the places that ive been as a reporter where ive seen people who are really struggling with their situation who lived through insurmountable tragedies and i think about people who lived through jim crow or the Great Depression and i try to put my life in context to that but i dont know if thats always the right thing to do and look at a situation and say its not as bad as that. Its good point. For some people and im glad it works for you. Other people say it feels invalidating or minimizing. I know that if i complain to my husband, look at all these other positive things. Sometimes what we need in that moment is somebody to validate and empathize and reassure us and have a conversation. That conversation often should be with people we work with. Listen this is what i have on my plate. Any way we can redistribute this. Im going through a hard time now. Its hard for people to say. People want to show up especially in this pandemic when we dont have the daily check ins. There were so many built in thing you could turn to a coworker and say how would you manage this. Now it requires a phone call or meeting. What im hearing people are saying what they are missing with Remote Working the connections and microconnections that were built in. The watercooler conversations that you didnt have to pick a an effort or having an easy dialogue and they are missing whats interesting, vlad is the commute. Now i dont think anyone in a million years would tell you oh, i miss being on the train. Were finding that studies are showing being on train or having some sort of a commute even if youre walking or biking to work allowed you emotional procession time. Allowed to you get ready four day and then allowed you to decompressed. We had these natural conditions. People are working an hour and half to two hours longer. We dont have the same sort of boundaries because our work day doesnt have a finite ending the way it used to. Thats a great point. I encourage our viewers to check out entrepreneur is agram, your social media. You always have word ever wisdom ahead a conversation about wealth and giving in these turbulent times. As america faces the triple challenges of a pandemic, historic unemployment, and a reckoning over systemic racism we wanted to talk to someone who tried to help. Darin walker is the president of the Ford Foundation. The organization is devoted to social justice and the arts. It does not take donations. Instead the foundation with a 13 billion endowment gives away at least half a billion dollars a year. The money goes to groups like the naacps Legal Defense fund, the equal Justice Initiative and the smithsonian. This year the group is giving away even more. We spoke with walker at the organizes empty headquarters in new york city. You want to go my office . Darin walker heads one of the wealthiest charities in the world. I love this. You rest. In this year walker felt the pressure to give more than usual. So the foundation made a bold move, to borrow a billion dollars. We had to figure out a strategy to give away more money. So we issued the firstever social bond bay foundation. Does that scare you no it wasnt scary. It was necessary. Were at a time when foundations have to do more. The question in 2020 for wealthy privileged people and institutions is not how much do i give back, its how much am i willing to give up. Are you willing to give up your privilege walker asked in a recent New York Times oped in which he described being at a black tie charity event. You write in that piece i have the ominous sense we were eating lobster on the titanic. Thats a sinking ship. Unless we recognize the need to build a more equal america, we will be eating lobster on th today. Its the largest American City ever to do that. In 2014, after detroit declared bankruptcy, the Ford Foundation committed 125 million to the city. Did it work . The city is challenged. But when you consider that seven years ago the streetlights werent working, garbage wasnt the foundation started with the profits of the Ford Motor Company in 1936 has long been committed to social justice. On the walls of its new york headquarters is a 1963 ad from a new orleans newspaper. It said notice to all white citizens, stop buying ford cars and trucks. This was directly targeting the Ford Foundation. Absolutely because the Ford Foundation was seen as a financier of civil rights. Walk kmoers linows like the itself carries a complicated legacy. Im lucky to lead a foundation founded by a man who was a great antisemite and racist but a great philanthropist. You say as a country we need to embrace our flaws. We are as a nation boston those nuclear i was the. The 60yearold walker who wields great influence came from modest beginnings. How did a great lakes kid with a single mom make it here . Walkers mother was a nurses assistant. She was determined that i be in head start. What did she know about head start . She knew that a lady in 1965 walked up to our little shotgun house in ames, texas and told her about this new problem that president johnson had put in place for kids like me. Yeah. That was all she needed to hear. Walker went on the university of texas and a career on wall street. Before turning to philanthropy. America is not just a country. America is an idea. The idea of mobility. And about better life. For your children. We are are asypxiating the idea. Walker sees something changing in the country after the death of george floyd at the hands of police. Racism is no longer deniable. Up work with a lot of white americans. Do you think they are ready to confront racism . I am hearing ceos, leaders across this country talk about racism in ways i have never heard them. Were in Uncomfortable Conversations and thats going to be the first step that allows us to begin toexcavate and heal as nation. Its so interesting what they are doing by borrowing this known give away more. More foundation s are trying to protect themselves. Hes putting his money where his mouth is. Is he stepping further into areas where he hasnt stepped before. By borrowing money and it hasnt been done by a philanthropy like that before.
