Every step of the way. This morning rita braver will spend some time with jill biden. We lift each other up. Reporter despite the demands of being a political spouse, jill biden has always maintained her career as a Community College teacher. And now she could make history. Do you think youll keep teaching if you become first lady . I hope so. Reporter really . If we get to the white house, im going to continue to teach, yeah. Reporter ahead on sunday morning, life with jill biden, not just a day at the beach. Pauley then it is on to a legend of popular music by the name of james taylor. Hhe has been going strong for more than 50 years. And as i found out earlier this year, he is eager to share his memories. Ive seen fire and ive seen rain reporter his voice is unmistakable. Good night, moonlight lady reporter so is the way he picks that guitar. That is a song im proud of. I think it came out really well and i worked hard on it. Reporter how old were you . I guess i was 20. Pauley a visit with james taylor later on sunday morning. Pauley it is clear and protective, and found in packages everywhere. But is bubble wrap art . Yes, says lee cowan. Call it pop art. Reporter one destruction of bubble wrap, it is hardly considered a crime, unless, of course, youre artist bradley hart, whos canvas is bubble wrap. Really . What do you use bubble wrap for . To protect things that are important to us. To me, it is memories. Reporter the man who paints in a bubble, ahead on sunday morning. Pauley and Jill Schlesinger gives us the lowdown on Higher Education in this era of covid. And jim axelrod returns to another challenging time at the white house, the times of president gerald ford and the man who documented them. Shabbos kestenbaum takes us for a spin in an r. V. , suddenly the way to go. Well have the latest on that horrific explosion in beirut. And some thoughts from jim gaffigan. Its sunday morning, august 9th, 2020. And well be back after this. Pauley like almost every other aspect of our lives these days, back to school has special meaning in the midst of a pandemic. As returning students in many of our universities are now learning firsthand. Jill schlesinger has our cover story. You need me to put these seats down . Reporter the last time the university of mississippi campus was full of students was in may. They have come to clear out their dorms after the coronavirus chased them home in march. It was hard because everyone was kind of, like, finally coming together, bonding and getting close, all of my friends, and then we all had to leave. Reporter olivia fuller spent most of the Spring Semester taking Classes Online at home in chicago. Not ideal, said her mother, kim. Im more concerned about her not being not having her College Experience with her friends than i am anything. Reporter now olivia is heading back to school for the fall semester. Were all packed up. Kim, are you sending her off with 5,000 masks and gloves and instructions to be very, very careful . Are you being the mother that every mother is, basically . Were sending her with masks, and were sending her with common sense laughing . Common sense and masks. Reporter but it wont be the same. Classes will be a combination of online and in person. Theyre not all online. I have two hybrid classes. One is my chemistry class and the other is the nutrition class. The hybrid means sometimes youll meet and person and some stuff will be on line. Weve had to rethink everything we do. Reporter noel is the provost at mississippi university. Theyre working hard to keep the coronavirus offcampus. There are lots of protocols put in place to prevent the virus from spreading. That includes keeping people six feet apart, the instructor being 10 feet away from the closest student and having face masks for the instructors and for the students. That cuts our classroom capacity down dramatically. Reporter only a quarter of the countrys colleges and universities are planning to hold classes primarily in person this fall. Slightly more will be mostly online, and 16 will be a hybrid of the two. And with weeks to go before the semester starts, over a quarter of schools have yet to determine how classes will be taught. Robert kelchin is an associate professor of Higher Education at Seton Hall University in new jersey. The Fall Experience on campus will some combination of a monastery and a minimum security prison. Reporter that doesnt sound fun to me. It may not be the most fun thing. Is it better than living home with your parents, maybe. Is it safer than some other alternatives . Maybe. Is it going to be what students think of the College Experience . Absolutely not. Reporter but online has its fans. Queens college, part of the City University of new york, is in the shadow of manhattan. At queens, summer courses were only offered online. Pla plasma is predominantly water. Reporter as will 99 of fall classes. Online was done well, and it really works. Reporter frank wu is the new president of queens college. Our summer enrollment jumped 30 , to record levels, because so many people are interested in the online option. Reporter so tell me what does it feel like looking at this quad, this beautiful quad, and there is nobody here . Yeah. It feels empty, serene, beautiful, but we want to see it packed again hopefully in the future. Reporter Carmine Couloute is a graduate student at queens. By studying on line, she has also been able to hold down two jobs. And she is planning to continue online courses at queens, as well as at the university of chicago. It sounds like you have done pretty well with online learning. Yes. Reporter have you gotten better at certain things because it is remote . I have gotten better at certain things. Im back to my acvism. Sactivism. And making sure i pute aside for school work, also. Reporter how were your grades last semester . Did you have an uptake or a downgrade . Youre talking to a 4. 0er. Reporter what do you miss about going into a class physicall right. Part of the College Experience is that facetoface connection. It is about networking, about socializing, meeting new people from all different backgrounds, which queens specifically thrives on. And having that cut out from you, it definitely takes a crucial and significant part of the College Experience totally out the window. Reporter kestenbalm is on a tight budget and says online isnt what he signed up for. I had tuition due last week from queens college, with the same price. Im not sure what the plan is, but i do know i paid for services i know im not going to be receiving. If anyone walked into a supermarket and they were charged x amount for a product they dont know they were receiving, that would be ridiculous. Reporter 93 of undergraduates say tuition should be lower if classes are online. Some schools are offering tuition rebates, usually around 10 , but others may struggle just to stay in business, let alone give money back. The challenge with discounts is colleges still have to pay their bills, they still have to pay faculty to teach and staff to be there for students. Atthe end of the day, students are still getting those college credits. Reporter so the lesson planned for this fall includes less inperson collaboration, and forget about going to Football Games and big parties. The coronavirus is leaving its mark, perhaps permanently. Queens College President frank wu. How does the pandemic change the outlook for Higher Education . The pandemic changes everything for us. I started this job only three weeks ago, and my friends, they all said, oh, this must be a really hard time to be a College President. And i explain, no, actually it is much easier. We have an external threat we must respond to. You cant ignore it. This is a crisis, but its a crisis that we need to respond to and turn to our advantage. Reporter some schools, including rice university, have already started welcoming back students. Notre dame starts classes tomorrow, and olivia fuller is back on campus at ole miss. Down that way are where the fresh man dorms are. Reporter the fall semester doesnt start for two weeks, but she is ready for class, even if for now she will rarely be in a classroom. Hopefully if everyone does what were supposed to do and social distances and wears masks, slowly but surely, semester by semester, we can get back but surely, semester by semester, we can get back to normal. Youre on it. Exercising often and eating healthy . Yup, on it there too. You may think youre doing all you can to manage type 2 diabetes and heart disease. But could your medication do more to lower your heart risk . Jardiance can reduce the risk of cardiovascular death for adults who also have known heart disease. So, it could help save your life from a heart attack or stroke. And it lowers a1c. Jardiance can cause serious side effects including dehydration, genital yeast or urinary tract infections, and sudden kidney problems. Ketoacidosis is a serious side effect that may be fatal. A rare, but lifethreatening bacterial infection in the skin of the perineum could occur. Stop taking jardiance and call your doctor right away if you have symptoms of this bacterial infection, ketoacidosis, or an allergic reaction and dont take it if youre on dialysis or have severe kidney problems. Taking jardiance with a sulfonylurea or insulin may cause low blood sugar. Lower a1c and lower risk of a fatal heart attack . On it with jardiance. Ask your doctor about jardiance. On it with jardiance. Killer attitude. Nevor hydration. Neutrogena® hydro boost. The 1 hyaluronic acid moisturizer delivers 2x the hydration for supple, bouncy skin. Neutrogena®. Pauley bubble wrap, handy for packing and really fun to pop. But as lee cowan shows us, it truly takes a gifted person to think of it as pop art. Reporter georges idea of relaxing on a sunday afternoon may look pretty crowded in this socially distanced world of art, but it is one of the most reproduced works ever. Reporter but you may never have seen it quite the way artist bradley hart sees it. His canvas is bubble wrap, premade pixels that allow him to immortalize the dizzying dots in plastic. We know what youre thinking because, well, we were, too. Popping bubble wrap is alarmingly addictive. And dont even think about popping it around the bubble wrap artist. I love bubble wrap. I love the sound of bubble wrap popping. I hate the sound of bubble wrap popping in my studio, it means that something is screwed up or somebody is messing with my material. Reporter he spends weeks turning the ubiquitous Packing Material into art. From portraits of einstein and Biggie Smalls to scenes of wall street and central park. There are lots of colors that are beside each other, that when you step back, trade a different color. Im playing with the optic of how color resolves on your eyeballs. Reporter bubble wrap has always been full of surprises. It was invented by two engineers back in 1957, originally to be sold as textured wallpaper. The wallpaper never caught on, but bubble wraps cushioning capacity certainly did. It even helped cushion a blow to hart himself back in 2003, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It was really scary, and they said, there is no easy way to say this, you have m. S. , and i thought my life was over. Reporter for years he was reluctant to stick himself with needles as part of his treatment. But has his paintings became more popular, the bubbles, well, they seemed to speak to him. I realized to myself, im going, oh, my god, how preverse is this. You wouldnt inject yours, but youre injecting paint into bubble wrap. Reporter he works up close and personal. Closer to his canvas than most are with a brush. If you inject too slow or too fast, the bubble wont work. When i first did it, i stepped back 10 feet and went, oh, yeah. Reporter that must have taken forever . Forever, literally, that is the correct word. Reporter so he developed a computer algorithm that allows him a birds eye view of the bubbles while he is working in his own bubble. Isnt it tedious . It is, 100 . People think im o. C. D. , but im not. Reporter he is is efficient. His process creates two paintings as once. It turns out the drips have a magic all their own. So the other side is here. I very carefully remove it from the back to expose the impressions. Reporter yup, an impressionist work on one side, mirroring the painting on the other. Bradley harts work is a reminder, perhaps, in the midst of our pandemic, that we each have to do our part for the betterment of the whole. I joke to people, i live in a bubble. We choose who we let into our circle, and weve all been forced now to create microbubbles. But all of the little microbubbles come together and make a beautiful painting. Reporter who would have thought bubble wraps intended purpose has finally been realized. It did, indeed, grow up to be a wall covering after all. Sobr distanced pauley deep into this coronavirus pandemic, were also deep into vacation season. And as Kelefa Sanneh discovered, more and more of us are driven to get away from it all. Reporter this summer some families are trying to have it both ways. We dont really camp. Were not campers. Reporter theyre heading out and staying home. Well, you take your home with you. Reporter exploring public spaces while avoiding public bathrooms. It is nice knowing that we can control the environment that were living in. I dont have to worry about if something is sanitized or not. Reporter one way to deal with covid19 . Buy a recreational vehicle, an r. V. Weve looked at probably three of them so far. We just havent pulled the trigger yet. Reporter sales were up 90 in june, compared to last year. Are people telling you theyre possibly interested buying an r. V. Because of the pandemic . Just the fact there are so many people coming, calling, emailing. Reporter Gary Threlfall has owned garick r. V. In new jersey for 36 years. Lately he is seeing more firsttime buyers. It is kind of their only choice because an r. V. Is a sociallydistanced vehicle, a sociall sociallydistanced vacation, and a way to corral or keep your family together. Reporter that kind of sales pitch has been around for more than 100 years. This couple named the coconklins from new york city, they bought a bus. They reoutfitted it to this mobile decker mobile home, and they drove across the country to san francisco. The middle class is expanding, and so all of a sudden everybody is on the road. We can go anywhere we want to, weve got wheels. Reporter everybody, including lucille ball. If you need anything, wrap on the front window. Yes, dear. I will. Reporter in a 1954 movie, she breaks a cardinal r. V. Rule when towing a trailer, almost ride up front. That is the quintessential moment where the r. V. Becomes movie comedy, where youre working out your domestic issues. Reporter on garys lot, trailers start at around 15,000. But those sold out early. A lot of these dont look like what you would picture when you picture a 70s camper tailer. Theyre not. It is is 21st century. Reporter yes, you get your own bed, but also empty your own waste. Does it involve rubber gloves . You can empty your tanks without getting your hands dirty. It is not as bad as people might think. My motorhome has amenities i didnt have in my house. I have 45 feet of heated floors in the winter. Reporter this one may offer total convenience. If youd like a washer washer dryer. Wow. Reporter but it comes at a price. 162,000. You have a ranch, plenty of storage. Reporter miles per gallon . Seven. There is a Hidden Television here. Reporter whoa a nice flat screen. And, of course, a fireplace. How do i recline them . Oops, it is happening, here they come. These are electrical rather than mechanical. It is kind of strange not having a rearview mirror. It doesnt roll forward when ut pi it in drive. Thats on purpose. Reporter this is about the size of a city bus. No special license is required. Something about this vehicle does encourage caution. Reporter although firsttimers may need a bit of practice. Whoops oh, no that was a little tight. That was my back wheel, right . Yes. Reporter it is not exactly an impulse purchase. We were going to buy a second home in the country, in the mountains, and we decided to buy a motorhome instead, where our view could be anything we want it to be. Reporter this year lots of people have been cooped up at home. Especially with the children out of school and people working from home. Reporter and some of them are ready to move. So they could be working and traveling and seeing Different Things and there is no limitation to where you can go. For the sweaty faces. And the hidden smiles. The foggy glasses. And the muffled laughs. A simple piece of fabric makes a big statement i care. Wear a mask. Lets all do our part to slow the spread. Pauley with the Democratic Convention just over a week away, president ial candidate joe biden will announce his choice for a running mate any day, and he has vowed to choose a woman. Helping him to make that decision, a woman that has been at the former Vice President s side for more than 40 years. Rita braver is talking with jill biden. Reporter it is one of the most striking scenes of campaign 2020. [yelling] reporter jill biden sending off a heckler who goes after her husband. But then, jill biden has always stood up for her family. When you were a young girl, someone was picking on your little sister, and you knocked down the town bullies and i pulled back and i punched him right in the face. And i said, dont you ever throw worms on my sister again. It is more than just four more years at stake. Reporter but later, she is more measured. When it comes to President Trumps taunts of her husband at sleepy joe. Reporter would you call donald trump a bully . Im not going to call donald trump names because then doing the exact same negative thing that he does to other people, and i wont stoop to that. Reporter that combination of grace and grit once forward here in hammonton, new jersey, where jill jacobs was born in 1951. Her dads name is here on the world war ii monument. Donald jacobs. We used to take polish, actually, and shine his name, right there. Reporter this restaurant was once a pharmacy owned by her mothers parents. Her mom worked behind the soda fountain. Her dad showed up a lot. He was kind of wooing your mother here, but your grandmother never really liked him . Oh, no. He was literally from the other side of the tracks. She told my mother she could not see my father. Reporter but her parents married. And though they eventually moved away, they came back here every weekend with jill and her sisters. Still, there was always a little tension, especially when it came to sunday dinner. The grandmothers were kind of in competition with one another, so we would start here at grandma jacobs, and we would have a typical italian meal. And then ma would say, wait, i made dinner, too, for you. Reporter so you would have to go to the other grandmothers . We would have to eat at both houses. Reporter it was here that jill jacobs first introduced the family to joe biden, the u. S. Senator she was dating, a widower nine years her senior with two young sons. My grandmother, when we saw joe, she was so excited. I can picture her in her house coat and her black laceup shoes. And she said, im so excited to meet you because she was a staunch democrat. Reporter jill and joe biden were married in 1977. She says she first fell in love with his boys, beau and hunter had, and they were front and center in 1980 when she realized she and joe might be expecting a new baby. They went with me to the drugstore to get the pregnant check. Reporter they were the ones who were told were having a baby. Were having a baby. And i said, you can name the baby. Reporter and they chose ashley. But as much as jill biden loved being a mom, she also wanted a career. She got a doctorate in education and has worked as a Community College teacher for years, even as second lady. I teach a lot of immigrants and refugees. I love their stories. I love who they are as people. And i love the fact that i can help them on their path to success. Reporter do you think youll keep teaching if you become first lady . I hope so. Reporter really . I would love to. If we get to the white house, im going to continue to teach. It is important. And i want people to value teachers and know their contributions and lift up the profession. Reporter so youre really planning to do it as first lady . Yeah. Reporter at Virtual Campaign events, like this one from her dining table. This pandemic has really shown a light on the inequities throughout the United States. Reporter dr. B, as her students and staff call her, often speaks to teachers groups. Do you see yourself as someone who would be an advisor to the president . It is a marriage, and you listen to one another and talke talk things out with one another. Reporter have you weighed in on who you think would be a good Vice President for him we talked about the different women candidates, but it has to be joes decision, who he feels most comfortable with, who shares his values. And thats what he has always said that he and barack had. What jill is best at helping me do is figure out who the people around me would be most compatible with me. She knows me, i think better than i know me. Reporter we caught up with Vice President biden this past week. What is the secret to this marriage . I adore her. I was saying to her the other day, when she comes down the steps and i look at her, my heart still skips a beat. Reporter but in 2015, the couple went through the devastating loss of their son beau to cancer. What did it mean to you to have her at your side during this . In one sense i wish she hadnt been there because i hated to see the pain. We can be completely, totally open and let our grief show through with one another. I was just lucky to have her, as having my son hunter and my daughter ashley. Reporter you write that you feel sometimes like a piece of china that was shattered and put together again yes. Reporter but you still feel broken. You cant lose a child and be who you were. Youre changed forever. Youre not the person you were before your childs death. So, yeah, you are broken. Reporter still, she says, beau wanted his dad to run for president. And she is all in on the campaign. But there have been plenty of bumps in the road. Allegations started to come out that some women thought that your husband had been too familiar with them . Well, i think it was a space issue. They felt that they wanted more space. Reporter he made them feel uncomfortable . Yeah. Joe realized that and learned from it. He is totally aware of it now and keeps his distance. Reporter and she has watched as President Trump has tried to make their son hunters work in ukraine a campaign issue. It is a total distraction. We knew this, rita, when we decided to run. But as i said to joe, we have experienced the worst possible thing that could happen to us in life. We lost a child. Together we can handle anything. And thats what were trying to do. Reporter do you hold a grudge against President Trump for some of the things he has said about your family . I dont think he should be attacking my family. My family is not fair game. Joe is running against him. Thats different. Not my children. Reporter biden says if she becomes first lady, shell advocate for free Community College tuition, funding for cancer research, and support for military families, as she did as second lady. So rohoboth beach, delaware, this is your refuge . Yes. Isnt it beautiful. Reporter and she still laughs aout a practical joke she played years ago, when she was the first to arrive at air force 2 one day. I opened the overhead bin, and i jumped into there. And then as soon as they opened the bin, i jumped out. And i scared everybody. I think we laughed for, like, a half an hour. Reporter and if jill biden becomes first lady, where will stand on conventional things . Things are so serious, and these times are so tough, sometimes it takes a little levity and laugh to lighten things up. A little levity and laugh to lighten things up. A little joy. Flash forward, then ra kept me from the important things. E enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. Over the last decade, chevron has spent over 1 billion on Carbon Capture projects. And is investing in Startup Companies working to transform carbon into new forms of energy. Pauley like so many of us, jim gaffigan is wearing many hats these days. Humourist, actor, commentator, but gardener . Time for a progress report. Jim there has been a mistake. I understand were all coping with the pandemic in our own way, and generally weve embraced one of three activities. There are the bakers, the gardeners, and the exercisers. Im usually exempt from Group Activities because i dont like people. Also, i have five kids and no time. I mean, my wife and i, we couldnt even find a couple of hours to watch tiger camp. Yet somehow i ended up a gardener. I cant be a gardener. Gardeners are old, and, well, im not that old. Also, i live in new york city well, i normally did. Im not a fan of the outdoors. And vegetables . Well, vegetables and i have never gotten along. Yet somehow over the last two months, i find myself puttering around plants gardening. I blame the house we rented in june. I noticed the rental house had some raised garden beds. I thought, okay, well plant some seeds. Thats something the kids can do while i nap. Why do you have that . You know i dont like that . Thats right. But everyone else does. Jim well, the kids lost interest immediately, but i continued to water and tend and, well, garden. Hello, mr. Lettuce. May i have some of your bounty . I found something i couldnt get from binge watching, a zoom burger. I acquired some control. Obviously i cant control a global pandemic, but i can plant a seed and make sure it gets water and grows something where there used to be dirt. It is not just the accomplishment of growing something that wasnt there; its the autonomy. It is something i did during the pandemic by myself, alone. I ddnt stop there. In early july, i converted a nearby patch of dirt into a second garden. Like an a agricultural imperialist. Im virtually selfsufficient, if only i wanted to eat anything ive grown. Show me a green bean. Know anyone who wants 10,000 green beans . Oh pauley on this day 46years ago, president Richard Nixon resigned from och office in the wake of the watergate scandal. Vice president gerald ford stepped in to help heal a wounded nation. And as jim axelrod reports, one man captured it all in pictures. Reporter the Guiding Principles of president ial imagery have always been dignified, commanding, and, well, president ial. At least with the images the white house has control over, those taken by the president s official photographer. But when it came to the president , gerald ford had other ideas. Such as this meeting conducted in his pajamas. He let me do whatever i wanted. It was the perfect situation for a photographer, to have the ability to do this and have him not care. Reporter David Kennerly had unprecedented access to gerald ford and his family, something he demanded when offered the job. So i looked him in the eye and i said, mr. President , i would love to do it on two conditions i report directly to you, and i have access to everything that is going on in the white house to shoot it for history. And he started laughing and said, you dont want air force 1 on the weekend . Reporter ford, who served as president and Vice President without being elected to either office was appointed Richard Nixons Vice President after spiro agnew ran into legal trouble. 10 months later, ford took the oath as president after nixon resigned. So help me god. Reporter the country was real, and ford presented a picture of solid dependability. A straightarrow family man when the country needed it most. Trustworthy, brave, reverent. He kind of lived his life that way. He is the only president who was ever an eagle scout. Reporter but to capture that image for prosperity, the 64yearold former eagle scout chose a hardpartying bachelor. I used to bring dates to the white house. The president always liked meeting my girlfriends. Reporter gerald ford was your wing man . He wasnt my wing man, but lets say he was an observant pilot. Two think of those two men, you dont see a common bond and think they would be best friends, right . Reporter steve ford is one of president fords four children. They developed a genuine love for each other. Reporter how did they end up like that . Dad liked people and learn about people, and david was an interesting subject. Reporter David Kennerly was highly accomplished before he became gerald fords official photographer. He won a Pulitzer Prize for a portfolio that included images of the alifrazier fight and the war in southeast asiaia. But it was his personality that served him right in the wiemed. White house. My dad was a trg salesman. Reporter David Kennerlys combination of style and substance was recently on display in an exhibit entitled extraordinary circumstances, at the Gerald Ford Museum in grand rapids, michigan. People said ford met with bush, had a private meeting, just the two of them. Yes, the two of them plus me. Reporter that was exactly how gerald ford wanted it. He is president of the United States and he is still living in his home in Northern Virginia . Mrs. Ford said, youre president of the United States and im still cooking dinner, what is wrong with this picture . Reporter he had become president so abruptly and inherited an office consumed by conspiracy and criminality. Ford conquered that with transparency. This is really a good replica of the obviously office. Reporte at the Gerald Ford Museum, David Kennerly told us from day one he was given the kind of access that signaled to americans that the days of tricky dick were over. That gerald ford had nothing up his sleeve. This picture shows him two days into the presidency. You see a guy who is already kind of comfortable in the job. Reporter and that the presidency would survive. When nixon quit, i mean after watergate and everything else, there was no faith in the institution of the presidency. I assume the presidency under extraordinary circumstances. Never before experienced by americans. So he had to provide a degree of transparency that had never been provided before to shut down anybody who wanted to come at him for not actually being an elected president. Uhhuh. Yeah. I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your president by your ballots. He asked for americas prayer. This had never happened before in the history of this country. Think about it, most countries where you get a new president without an election, there is usually troops in the streets. Reporter David Kennerly would be with ford for nearly every big moment of his two and a half year presidency, including two assassination events. Sceek sksqueaky frommes. He was walking head as he pulled out this gun. Reporter and then, just 17 days later in san francisco, when Sarah Jane Moore tried to shoot mer ford. [gunfire] reporter did he ever say a word about another squeaky fromme or Sarah Jane Moores attempt . He was angry about both attempts because it was going to keep him further away from people because of the threat. Reporter no public figure was more committed to transparency than betty ford. Just weeks after her husband took office, she had a mastectomy for breast cancer. Women did not talk about that. You literally could not say the word breast on tv. Reporter not betty ford. She knew her own value as a symbol. Yes, i do have to talk about it. Reporter and understood her power in making sure that the public knew about both her cancer and her treatment. This is bethesda naval hospital, and the president brings bob hope along to cheer her up. Reporter she got hundreds of thousands of letters from women who said thank you for taking this out of the closet. The letters that interested me the most were the ones dad got. The one he got from men that said, thank you, mr. President , for showing me how to care for my wife. Reporter as much as gerald ford got him there, it was betty ford who provided David Kennerly with some of his richest material. Like on their last day in the white house, when she was walking through a final time with kennerly. She looks in there and said, i always wanted to dance on the cabinet roof table. And two security servicemen, oh, shes not going to do that. Are you ready . Im always ready. I dont miss stuff like im always ready. I dont miss stuff like that. When we visited a few months back, we found him both reflective and restless. You know, i dont sit still very well. So i need to have something to occupy me, particularly if im trying to concentrate on getting some work done or something. Pauley before james taylor can kindle the flames of his imagination, he likes to split kindling for his own little fire in the wood stove in his studio in western massachusetts. Where did you learn to do that . Um. I grew up in the sticks, so didnt you have fires as kids . James, i had a suburban childhood. We were girls. We didnt start fires. Of course. This is cheating. Pauley at 72, james taylor is as busy as ever. If were recording, we sort of set up in this space behind us. Pauley whether it is recording and producing his own albums you can see our list of songs that are on the american standards album pauley or building his own echo chamber from an old shipping container. Oklahoma, where the hello . Pauley another project, a deep dive into the well springs of his own creativity. In my mind, im going to carolina before long, my folks bought a piece of land down on morgan creek. Pauley an audioonly memoir about his early days and growing up in North Carolina with his parents and four siblings. We were kind of isolated out there. As kids, we seemed to have hours of empty time. A fantasy could last all afternoon. I dont think i would have become a songwriter if i had not had all of those free days to let my imagination roam. Pauley james taylor was 19 when he wrote carolina in my mind, during a trip to spain where he met a girl named karen. As the sun came up, the first verse came to me. Karen sh, the silver sun walk away and watch her shine. Pauley did you say, karen, do you have a pencil . I may have, i may well have. Pauley the memoir is called break shot. Well, a lot of pool ballgames start with a break shot. You just smack that triangle of balls and they go off in all different directions. But what that refers to is that there was a moment in my life and my familys life and in the popular culture, and we just jumped the tracks, you know, all at once. Pauley what happened . My fathers alcoholism, i think, reached a peak, and that happened that led to my folks breaking up. And i was, i think, a very sensitive kid. And i was away at school, deeply unhappy, and so i left school and went to a Psychiatric Hospital in boston called mcclain, and spent 10 months there. Pauley a turbulent time for a very young james taylor, but a remarkably creative one. Pain and longing finding its way into his songs. Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone pauley before he was 22, he had been signed by the beatles for their brand new label, apples. Ive seen fire and ive seen rain pauley and his second album, with songs like fire and rain there is a young cowboy who lives on the range pauley and sweet baby jane landed him on the cover of time magazine. Thats a song im proud of, i think it came out really well and i worked hard on it. Pauley how old were you . I guess i was 20. Good night moonlight ladies roc rock both were written behind the wheel of an automobile. In the first case driving to see my older brothers baby, named after me, sweet baby jane. And the second part was written driving from boston. Pauley there is the matter of the drug thing. Sure. Pauley im a little concerned you were on the road driving to North Carolina and you probably shouldnt have been driving . Sure, that is probably true, i probably shouldnt have been driving. Pauley well, but you survived it. You survived it all. I never saw, certainly being this age and still doing what i do at this age. Thats remarkable, too. Its very clear, my love pauley life these days is pretty sweet for james taylor. His two oldest children, ben and sally, are established musicians. His twins, rufuss and henry, who were six when sunday morning last visited the tailors, are off to college. And he has been happily married for two decades. Kim makes a cameo appearance on another musical venture in progress. Now, would you say it is made of i silk i corralled her to singing pauley did she sing that . Yes. Thats right. Pauley thats her . Yeah, thats kim. Pauley shes really good . Yeah, shes really good. She did that, just knocked it off in an afternoon, too. God bless the child that has got his own pauley the new album is called american standard, a collection of songs he grew up with and still loves. It is as easy pie these are songs ive known since i was a kid, all of them. I used to listen to my parents Record Collection just endlessly. You would lie on the floor, easily on a carpet, look out the window, and you would look at the album cover and read it through a couple of times, and then just gaze at the art and just listen to the music. Pauley and thats how it got imprinted, its permanently engraved . It really is. Pauley and now his songs are permanently engraved on our imaginations. This love stuff has got me in a ball pauley next year hell be out on tour again, a troubadour who still loves what he does. Its so easy to fall in love with you its undeniably revitalizing to have the audience react to a song they came to hear. So some people love it and other people are sort of worn down from it. Imtiaz tyab has the latest. Reporter a crimson Mushroom Cloud engulfs beirut. A blushing bride blown off her feet. And a mother in labor bringing new life into a world turned upside down. This hell state is the aftermath of a massive explosion believed to have been caused by over 2700 tons of ammonium nitrate, carelessly stored for over six years at the citys downtown port. This doctor, who moved from beirut from texas, is seen here in the back of an ambulance, soothing her injured daughter. I have a gentleman next to me holding his head. His head is bleeding on to me. And im singing, ive got peace like a river, and it makes no sense whatsoever. Reporter several of the citys hospitals were destroyed. More than 150 people were killed, 6,000 injured, and at least a quarter million were left homeless in an instant. Lebanon was a nation already on its knees. Its economy collapsed months ago, the coronavirus was surging, and now the unfathomable. This was the beating heart of beiruts legendary latenight district, and in just a few seconds, devastation. A perfect storm of misery that is being blamed squarely on the nations truly corrupt and deeply inept theaters. Still, there are extraordinary moments of hope, like when this woman was pulled from the rubble three days after the blast. As mar Mark Phillips explains. Reporter at the Tate Modern Museum in london, they just reopened after the coronavirus lockdown, to discover that the installation they thought was bold when it first opened in the museums enormous Entrance Hall last fall now seems positively clar voint. Ivoint. Itclairvoyant. It is an et slavery. It is an allegory of the black atlantic, and it connects africa to america and europe and economic prosperity. England was the beneficiary of the trade slave and its products. So you have this kind of institution that spans many hundreds of years, and everybody is implicated in it. Reporter everybody in implicated in it, including the people who endowed this place, named for the tate family that made its fortune in the sugar business, a business founded on slave labor. Big artwork, big irony. And if it looks a little familiar, thats because it is modeled after one of the most famous monuments in london. The imposing memorial to Queen Victoria that has sat in front of Buckingham Palace for more than a century. It features classic im imagery. While the monument at the museum shows the dark side of imperial history, the horrors of the transport of slaves from africa to work in britains colony in north america and the caribbean. The work was commissioned well before the killing of george floyd. And the growth of the black lives matter matter movement, which has taken hold here, too, with large demonstrations on the streets of london and other cities. Take this curator, who feels the artwork is even more relevant now. We have moments in the u. K. And the states, and what happens to monuments in the public realm. Reporter part of the conversation here, as in the u. S. , involves con controversial symbols of the past. A crowd toppled the statue of slave trader e edward colston, and they dumped it in the same had been in which ships once sailed to pick up their slaves in africa. Pie personally, i did not shed a tear. The man was a monster. Reporter he and a team of historians at the Prestigious University of College London spent years creating a data base of all of the slave owners in britain who were paid compensation when slavery was abolished in the 1830s. Meticulous records from the time show the payout was enormous. The equivalent of about 3 billion now, given not to the slaves but to the slave owners. The information is all there. It is all public. Reporter who got the money . Some were wealthy pillars of society, like George Hibbert, paid about 40,000 pounds then, about 6 million in todays money. This is the man who didnt need the spare change, by the way. Reporter George Hibbert owned thousands of slaves, some owned far fewer. Her is 48 pounds, almost 49, for two enslaved people. Reporter the 49 pounds is worth about 7,000 now. The government only actually paid the loan back to the bank of england in 2015. Reporter the black study and scholar kehundi andrews says the fact that the government compen compensatd the slave owners means in a cool twist, the generation of immigrants who moved to britain from the caribbean, ended up footing part of the bill. Me and my grandmother hae actually been paying reparations for slaves to slave owners. We literally paid for our freedom. Reporter the prosperity of many modern British Companies and families can be traced back to original investments made with those payments. The green king pub chain is just one example. It has now been embarrassed into pledging funds to fight racism. The same goes for lloyds of london, one of the worlds biggest insurance markets, who made huge profits from slavery. Its Business Model was ensuring slave ships. The idea they could give away some money to charity is frankly offensive. Reporter is this the point at which the next stage of the change happens . I think it is interesting, if you talk about the killing of somebody 3,000 miles away for britain to acknowledge its racism in many different forms. Reporter it is not just happening in britain. The death of a man under the knee of an american cop has forced several former colonial powers to confront the darkest sides of their history. In paris, the statue of jeanbaptists colbert, author of the black code for the treatment of slaves and french colonies was splattered in red paintment ipaint. In belgium, this statue met a similar fate. George floyds killing is just the straw that broke the camels back. Here sits the sam it is the sam, we have the same problems, covid19. Racism is not an american problem, it is a world problem, and now were having that global conversation. Reporter in bristol, where the slave trader Edward Colstons statue had been, they put up a statue of one of the protestors, and the city took it down the next day. The conversation has a way to go yet. Side effects can cause serious including dehydration, genital yeast or urinary tract infections, and sudden kidney problems.
