From the east and west, north, and south in the goldrush. Tolerance, discrimination, and many difficulties have endured, threatened, and contributed enormously. The chinese continue to arrive today to study, to work, to perhaps stay permanently for today, a priest of the design who directs the Chinese Ministry , serving the spiritual needs of the chinese catholics of our area. A little history, find out what is up currently, but perhaps into the future. So after this, join us with conversation on chinese catholics. Hello, and thank you for joining us. How do i say that . Thank you, thank you. And he is, the director of Chinese Ministry . Yes, and the direct are here. And how long have you been doing that . Ive been doing that work for five years. In the city . Yes, i live in the city. To stand of sunset. And from then, i believe is one of six or seven parishes that have chinese worship . Yes, they have sunday mass at 12 30. Actually, 12 00. Every sunday. And is your mass in japanese, mandarin . Mac im actually doing it only in mandarin when i came here, but i learned japanese. Now, i celebrate in japanese. I pray in mandarin, but i also learned how to pray chinese. Your english is good and you have not heard you in cantonese. People some do not understand mandarin. But i speak to them in japanese, and then they say much better. They can understand now. Two i think that even we who sort of live your know very little but of the Chinese Community but we know that the nature of the original chinese communities people who were cantonese speakers. And more and more, the immigrant community, or the Current Community has become people from the mainland who speak mandarin or the native tongue gets the next im going to ask about yourself. You were born in china. Was born in china. Central part of china. Its a province called inner mongolia. Asked to bring up this fight. I think it is slide number one. It should be a map of china, and if you can see come up in the yellow and the top. Yes. Yes. Light is the needle of the yellow part. North west of beijing. Megan grew up there, and born into a catholic family . Yesterday i was born into a very catholic family. Even so, at that time, the church were all closed, and we do not have priests or leaders. So, but my family held onto face, and i was brought up as a true calf like. And it seems to me that you, and you got some training from, discover your location of the priest by the aid of the divine work society . Yes. From my mom, its very safe for catholics. She wanted a place for religious systems. And that was six siblings. She had to tell that. So, actually, when i was very young , my mother already asked me to pray for your location. My late mother. And she passed away two years ago. So, thats where i got my location. And pray for it. And when a group, i had an opportunity to get to know some missionary in china. So i joined the missionaries. And i looked at the website, and i knew very little about them before meeting you, but the design was a very Large Organization with 4000 priest, 2000. Works and how many countries . 84 countries now, and so, a few years ago, we were in 72 countries. But after three years, we expanded to 12 more countries. So, we have people from different countries, different personalities. So, we are really, lets say, its only congregations growing now and the Catholic Church. One issue that is growing locations to four yeah, yeah, yeah. Because many of them are aging and the members are not finding new members. Four yeah, no. Four do you attribute the growth to the potency of your carrying or the importance of your mission . Yeah, many people still the missionary work to bring the good news to others, and to proclaim the gospel. So, a lot of people want to join us. And also, we are very international. Very inclusive. So that part of our charisma. Its very attractive. I read that in your training. You get crosscultural training. I figure an example of that. And you have, you came and studied here in the United States . Yes. A degree in theology in chicago . Yes. First of all i studied, when i came here, i entered college, that is a college located in iowa. So i started my philosophy there for four years. After graduating from there, i went to calf logic union and studied my theology or for five years. And let me ask you this. Would you say your missionary to us in california . Very much so. I would say, yes. You serve the Chinese Community because you have a builtin expertise in that. I imagine that your order could train you and send you to someone else. The newest mission, i read in norway, and in burma. So we are very open to our church. So, whenever theres a need for china to explore to the area, to work with a local church, or to work with people who live there. And i read that your mission is particularly for the poor. And that includes the large immigrants, the Migrant Group circulating to the response to their needs as well. So i guess, because we are very international. Are missionary society because we cant go to different countries, and to be with your own people, to know that they are in a different country but also with your own people. So many immigrants here in the bay area. So, i have an advantage because i know the culture, i can work a peep or. Its truly a blessing for us. Thats wonderful. We will come back after this brief break and talk more about the history and future of catholicism for the chinese. Hello, welcome back. As we mentioned, theres a long history of chinese catholics in San Francisco, and in fact, the chinese population i believe in San Francisco is about one in five of the population. Been here for a long time and we have a long history. Let me show you a couple of wide from the past. Sides four and this is a chinese madonna at the Chinese Mission in San Francisco in the 1920. And slide five. This is the 1940s, and this is a famous drummond bellcore from saint maries school, which practiced for 70 or 80 years. Quite a wellknown tour. But the chinese in San Francisco have had their difficulties, but it seems to me that they were announced and fully assimilated. Weve had things like the First Chinese bishop. Monsignor wong, and you have come to serve the Chinese Community here. So, can you tell us about it . What is it doing, what are your activities, one of the challenges . So, from the very beginning, i did not know many chinese immigrants here, and church, our church later opened her door to welcome all the immigrants. There were difficulties, especially in the beginning. Its really hard for them, for the church to find a Catholic Priest to serve them, because not many priests speak chinese. So, but in my team, at the beginning of the the father to establish a Chinese Mission and mary, and from that moment on, and the peep hole start to organize. Within itself. They start to do the open chinese school. So, andy. Its always our goal for our church. We try to bring it to the population of the chinese and San Francisco. We, now we are trying to revive, create some programs to start to build up the Chinese Community here. And i notice, we can show the slide again. I think this is the slide 12 . Is the chinese Catholic Ministry homepage. Now, its a beautiful upside of activities and news and such, and im wondering who does the website for you . Thats a good one. I know that we need a website. I also got all the social media to utilize. So, actually, i learned how to do the website on youtube. So, i made it by myself. You make it by yourself, well done. Its beautiful, but its still in the process. Yes. Let me ask you. We can show this is fine as well which i think is very good. Slide number 13 is what you call your plan . Yes. And we studied about how to do irregularities, how to do the opportunity. So, we had a meeting. I called all the leaders of the diocese, Chinese Ministry. So, we had a meeting. We worked out and a ventilation and planned. So, as a partial plan we are going to do. So we are going to get started in the process. But we already appointed a leader. So, in that way, we can create a lot of activities for all the catholics, and the formation will have our caa information. Social activity. Spiritual activity. So we are going to create it. I see many activities, and i wonder if its attractive to you. It seems to me that theres a large cohort of chinese that are active and safe. Yes. Theres a lot. So, were going to go to the program and last month, july. I organized one activity, because a lot of young, chinese professionals are working in San Francisco. So, i organized a barbecue. A lot of people came. So, this is interesting. I think that the chinese families in the bay area, like other families are having fewer children. But theres more chinese immigration, or at least visitation. Theres the students in high schools and colleges, large groups of professionals. So you make connections with these as well . Due to the chinese campus ministry, we just started. So, i hope we can reach out to those students in colleges, and in high school, and you know i have been invited to different high schools. So, students in high school that the thirtysomething students in high schools. So, ive been in the campus and talk to them about their faith. Who is jesus christ, yeah, and i know that there are, there is an information conference was now has workshops in chinese. And i know that industry has and is more chinese literature. The last minute of the segment, we have photos lets say, six, seven, eight, nine, and 11. In order like that, and quickly just rolled through them. Shows some of the beauty that the Chinese Culture has provided here for the Catholic Church. So, this that we are going to see in the cathedral, and i believe its chinese . And this happens every year . Can we see. We have the bishop and others participating. We have chinese dancers, chinese decorations, a blessing of ancestors and so on. Lets see if i can Police Photos up and we can just watch this. I came over, and we, before this activity, this was taking part in your local church, but we want to show Chinese Culture on a bigger scale. So, thats why we loved. Is quite beautiful if we just rolled through these you can get an idea of how gorgeous is in the church. The priest and the investments are usually the most beautiful thing, but on this day, quite beautiful things going on. And a reverent prayer for blessings, and wonderful sermons and so on. And the chinese will sing in choir. And thinking about the good lucky dragons, are they doing the right thing out there question i guess, its a tradition. The Chinese New Year we celebrate with the dancing of the dragons, the lions. Its to really represent the harmony between healing and the earth, and the whole, and animal. So, really enjoyable. That is beautiful. And let me say, you can see that live on our youtube on this youtube channel. Wonderful to look at. Lets take a brief break with our last segment. Done in five hello and thanks for being with us. I wanted to ask you about catholicism in china. China has been seen many missionaries over the past. Five centuries . Its not catholic, but they are mysterious, so. They proclaim christ. They proclaim the gospel. So, i think its correct, basically, statistically that the christian population in china is growing very rapidly. People are interested in christianity. I think protestant christianity is 80 . In and catholic christianity is 20 . So, what do you make of this phenomenon . I think chinese always seeking spirituality, and moral support in the family as a people. And also, because christs message is very attracted to the culture itself. And people are really open to that message. And people, materially satisfied. They have a deeper longing in their spiritual, in their heart. Where is the next step . And where they can find the meaning. Trying to work for material groups, but now, people have that already. Whats next step . So thats why the vast majority of chinese people, especially young people, they are in college and also very interested in seeking spiritual nourishment. There must be that hunger. And i think youre right. Im not sure that we in the west appreciate the doctor how rapid the growth of the chinese economy has been. We hear about it a lot. Truly, more and more, a huge middleclass, more marketing what actually say have enough materials that they want to know more. What life is about. Very interesting. Our catholic missionaries are free to practice in china . Yes. Now, we have freedom, but not totally. And hopefully, we can have total freedom very soon. And to bring gospel to the people, and the message of love, hope, and faith to all the people. And you, your nextdoor to china here in california. So i know you make connections with chinese catholics and academics and so on, right . Yes. Some, from time to time, i know we always have connections and when you have different people from hong kong, thailand, and from the mainland , theres always a connection between china and the church in china. Ended is the Catholic Church . You know, its the great word that means universal, and we are. Let me ask you, we have about a minute left. What would you like people to remember and take away from this program . I would like to think everybody, and to watch this program, and to learn and share, and i would like to encourage everybody to pray. And have the freedom to worship , and establish a formal relationship, and i also pray for other missionaries, we are working very hard to bring the good news to others, and also, we also want to gather people. You dont have to be chinese. You know, so. If you can pray for us, and if you want to be supportive to us, you can our Chinese Ministry. They can phone you with their experiences . They can go to your website . Yes, thats right. And you can use people i suppose in your ministry. Yes, of course. Thats wonderful. The last note, i think that ive read that the population of christians in china may be 200 million. In 10 or 15 years. Which would make it the largest christian population in any country in the world. So, the center of christianity is moving from the old european west to asia, perhaps .
