It is 80 miles southeast of nassau, the bahamas, now. Florida is the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic at this time with record numbers of new cases and deaths set this week. The storm is complicating efforts to contain the virus. Manuel bojorquez is in riviera beach, florida, good morning. Reporter good morning. Practically the entire east coast of florida is bracing for the impacts, the potential impacts from hurricane isais. Anything from flooding rains and storm surge, it is especially a concern along the coast of Palm Beach County and up north along the i95 corridor where the hurricane could make landfall. Overnight, this entire area is under a hurricane warning. Floridas governor has declared a state of emergency. Hes urging residents to have seven days worth of food, water, and medicine ready, but also facial coverings and Hand Sanitizer as this potential sdrer is merging with the is merging with the covid19 crisis. Its important to include personal protective gear in those kits today. Reporter staterun testing sites in areas were closed until next week, hampering efforts to track the virus. Some Miamidade County hurricane shelters are on standby with the potential to provide separate quarters for those who are currently infected. Governor ron desantis said the state has a supply of personal protective gear at the ready, as well as generators for Nursing Homes at risk of losing power. Right now on hand, they have 20 million masks, 22 million gloves, ten million gowns, 1. 6 million face shields, 270,000 cover yalls, and 20,000 thermometers. Reporter already, isaias has battled the bahamas, areas devastated by Hurricane Dorian last year. It hammered puerto rico and parts of the dominican republic, too. As it travels north, the governors of North Carolina and virginia have already declared states of emergency. With North Carolina ordering evacuations from at least one barrier island. A hurricane during a pandemic is double trouble. But the state has been carefully preparing for this scenario so that we can do our best to keep people safe from the weather, as well as the virus. Reporter the concern is not just along the coast but also parts inland which could also see strong winds and flooding rains. The Important Message here in florida from officials this morning and along the eastern seaboard is that as we run out of time to prepare for the storm, people should very soon be in the place where they intend to ride it out. Dana . All right. Thank you. Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli is tracking the path of the hurricane. Good morning. How soon might it make landfall . Its going to happen tonight and tomorrow. You have just the next few hours to prepare if youre along floridas east coast. Lets show you the current status on the storm right now located across the central bahamas. It has winds of 85 miles per hour, and its moving to the northwest. Its around nassau. This is what has changed overnight since you went to bed. The track has shifted ever so slightly east away from the coast. Thats good news, but any change at all, theres no wiggle room, would bring the strongest winds tonight and tomorrow right along the major i95 cities. Then possibly a second landfall on tuesday along the carolina coast, and maybe a third landfall in new england as we head into wednesday as a weaker storm. This is the wind field. Youll notice the strongest winds move in late tonight through tomorrow morning, strongest winds in palm beach counties, along the Treasure Coast and toward the space coast toward tomorrow afternoon. Watch out for hurricaneforce gusts and eventually into the carolinas. Let me leave with this here water temperatures are blazing hot across all of the atlantic basin. Temperatures actually in record territory. Part of this is due to humancaused climate change. We have warm water temperatures by a couple of degrees. That has two effects. First of all, it makes these storms more intense and very well could keep the intensity high on this particular system. And also its accelerated the pace of our season to toward territory. Were exceeding records already. This is likely to be probably the second mostactive Hurricane Season on record when its said and done. Thank you. The White House Point man for covid19 testing says the u. S. Is struggling in its ability to provide rapid results. As schools and businesses look to testing as key to reopening plans, Admiral Brett Giroir says results inside of two to three days in many cases are still not possible in much of the country. It comes as the u. S. Saw more than 67,000 new cases of the virus on friday. Its pushing the total number of cases above 4. 5 million, and the death toll over 153,000. The testimony youre about to give is the truth reporter friday before the house select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis, President Trumps testing czar, Admiral Brett Giroir, was asked if the country is doing enough testing. We cannot test our way out of this or any other pandemic. Tsting does not replace personal responsibility. It does not substitute for avoiding crowded indoor spaces or washing hands or wearing a mask. Reporter at that same hearing did the protest increase the spread of the virus . The protest incarcerated the spread of the virus. Reporter they tried to get dr. Fauci to take a stand on large protests. Crowding together particularly when youre not wearing a mask contributes to the spread of the virus. Its a simple question, doctor. Should we limit the protests . The government is yes. But everybody wants to play safely. Reporter and new jerseys governor says the recent surge in cases is setting off alarms. Hes putting residents on notice if things continue to incline the state could impose tougher restrictions. Back to you. Thank you so much. Dr. Amesh adalia joins us for more on developments regarding the pandemic. Hes a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of public health. He is in pittsburgh this morning. Doctor, it is august 1st. We are getting closer and closer to the start of the school year. I realize different communities are making different decisions. What else are we learning right now about how the virus impacts children and the likelihood of transmission . So it remains true that children are likely spared from the severe consequences of this disease. Theyre not represented amongst those that are hospitalized or have severe cases, and thats a good thing. What we are learning is children, yes, they can be infected, yes, they have the virus in their nose, and they can spread it to each other. The question is how much would they do that in a school setting, and how much can you mitigate that by social distancing, by changing the way that you physically operate a school. And i think were going to see a lot of that unfold as schools start to open. There are private schools open in the United States right now. There are schools in other countries and day care centers. I do think this is an open question. But it has to be a priority. The American Academy of pediatrics, National Academy of engineering and medicine have talked about schools being a priorities to open. We need to do it safely, following cdc guidance. I think this has to be something we try to put forward as we move through the pandemic. You know of the things that people have talked about in reference to getting back to school might be testing where you get results in 48 to 72 hours, certainly faster than people are seeing now. Where are we in terms of that benchmark of getting those test results back that quickly . It varies across the country. If youre in the hospital, and im going in a couple of hours to see patients, you can get the test back in a couple of hours. Its the outpatient testing where we have this failure. Where we have tests that take serve or eight days to seven or eight days to come back, there are long lines to get swabbed, all of that discourages testing. And the test that comes back in seven to eight person is worthless for the person and contact tracers, all of that transmission likely occurred. We want to test people instantly. Maybe in their home like we can do for hiv. Were not quite there yet. Doctor, doctors and nurses are Getting Better at treating the virus every day which is good news. As of now there is no approved medication to treat coronavirus and no vaccine. Any idea what you think comes first, approved medication or the vaccine . We do have an experimental antiviral call ed remdesivir that gets people out of the hospital about 30 first quicker. This is something that we are using. Were also using steroids on those who need oxygen. That cuts mortality. That was an already approved drug, and we did a controlled trial and got data. There is a new tool in we have in juliy that woo did not have in march. This is something thats a standard of care now. The other drugs are on their way. Were getting antibody treatments, theyre working on convalescent plasma. But do these in an experimental trial. These are likely things well get before the vaccine. You have to remember that the process is long. Were entering phasethree trials. In order to vaccinate the population with a twodose revenue message, it could take over a year to get through that. So many people are looking to try to travel in some way to get out of their scope where they are right now. Any safe advice you can give along those lines . You have to remember that any activity that we do now in the era of the pandemic is going to be unable to completely eliminate the risk of transmission of the virus or acquisition of the virus. You can do some simple things avoid crowded places, wash your hands, dont touch your face, wear a Face Covering in places that are crowded, where you cant social distance and try and think about how to modify your vacation plans to make them less likely to come into tinto contact with the virus. Lots of people are going to florida and south carolina, those probably arent the best places to go. Look at the map and see where the virus is controlled. Dr. Amesh adalia, thank you. Welcome back to cbs this Morning Saturday. We continue this half hour with the disruption of life and missions because of the coronavirus pandemic. That includes the fight against plastic pollution. Some bans on the use of plastic bags were quickly tossed out and suddenly personal protective gear was everywhere. Now many of those objects are showing up in fields, lakes, rivers, and oceans. Here and in nations around the world. Roxana saberi has the story. Reporter on the shores of southwest england, Emily Stevenson has spent more than a decade cleaning up trash. Last year she showed us what she typically discovers. I think were definitely finding more plastic bottles and more plastic in general. Reporter but as the covid19 pandemic has spread, shes been finding a new kind of plastic pollution singleuse masks and gloves. 171 plastic gloves surrounding one supermarket in the southwest of england. Reporter how long can this stuff stay in the environment . Quite often well get saturated when its in the marine environment. The plastics industry has lobbied for these rollbacks arguing that singleuse plastic is the safest material to protect people from covid19. Tony radoszewski, ceo of the u. S. This as President Trump is floating the idea of postponing the election. With more on both stories, were joined by Political Correspondent ed okeefe in washington. Ed, lets start with the potential vp pick for Vice President biden. What do we know about the vetting process . I know weve heard theres little more than ten women that are involved. Reporter thats right. About ten, 11 women, depending how you count it. Governors, lawmakers, former Obama Administration officials, most have been asked to submit documents about personal finances, the history of their family, public speeches, legislation theyve proposed or voted for in the past. All of this leading up to an announcement that were told is unlikely next week, but very likely the week after which would be just the week before the Democratic Convention is supposed to get under way. We also believe that biden will interview them, whether in person or virtually he wouldnt say. And boy, oh boy, were trying to figure that out. Who is helping him make this pick . Reporter so hes got at least four people who are officially doing this. His former general counsel from when he was Vice President , his good friend senator chris dodd, former senator chris dodd of connecticut. The los angeles mayor, eric garcetti, and congresswoman lisa blunt rochester from delaware. The states only congresswoman, the first africanamerican woman elected to congress from the first state. They have been doing the paperwork gathering, the initial interviews. Theyre leading teams of volunteer attorneys who are doing deeper vets. But beyond them, hes going to consult his wife, dr. Jill biden, his sister, valerie, and about two or three aides who have been with him since the 1970s. This will be a very close hold decision. You try to talk to people across the campaign who admit they dont know much about whats going on, whats in his head. Thats partly because of the pandemic, and theyre literally not around him. Also because they know he keeps close counsel. Any indication about what has become the most important trait or traits to him in this candidate . Reporter this is important because theres been a lot of conversation about, oh, this publi person would help in this state or this person likes this person, she would bring in kind of experience. Remember what biden has said publicly since the start of this he is looking for someone with whom he can have an equally close personal and professional relationship as he did with barack obama, and somebody he believers can step into the job if, god forbid, something happens. Those are the two most critical things. Weve spent time the last few days talking to people part of the search process for previous candidates. And they emphasize those are usually the only two things that matter. Can this person step into the job, and how close of a relationship would they have with the president. All other things are far less critical. And history shows picking this person isnt necessarily a big factor in who voters ultimately vote for. Perhaps the exception to that being in recent years when john mccain picked sarah palin because there was so much concern that palin perhaps wasnt ready for the job. All right. And finally, ed, not that anyones counting, but 93 days until the election. From the polling youve seen and the reporting youve done, how many people are still making up their minds . Oh, very few. You know, only about like 5 , 6 of voters roughly. At this point its not who youre going to vote for but how youre going to vote. Will you vote absentee, can you vote absentee, or are you willing to stand in line . Wee said it before, we will say it again, the president thinks he can move the election. He cannot do that without congress acting, and lawmakers say they have no interest in moving the date. Thats correct, a congressional call. Thank you very much. And so that tradition of a newspaper coming that you can sit down and open, i think thats something that were going to miss. It kind of hurts to lose that. Reporter the monday and tuesday editions will only be available on line. And when that happens, wyoming will become the only state in the nation without a daily printed newspaper. For brad reece, holding a newspaper is different and better. Im tired of getting on the internet. You know what i mean . Im tired of computers. I dont want to look at a computer anymore. I just want to live my life and interest live my life and enjoy it. Sometimes that means a nice drink and newspaper to read. One of my first thoughts is how many of our older readers are going to go out, spend 400 on an to read the e edition. Reporter Nick Reynolds is the startribunes state house reporter. We adapt to things all the time. If we think about how long print has been around and how steady of a presence its been, were talking centuries here. This is like the greatest disruption to one of the most consistent mediums in history. Reporter Penelope Abernathy researches the decline of newspapers and rise of Digital Media at the university of North Carolina school of journalism. Cutting back on the printing and distribution of a newspaper on certain days makes a lot of economic sense for newspapers. What it often doesnt take into account is the dependence that people in outlying areas that do not have access to digital alternatives. Reporter wyoming ranks near the bottom nationally in internet access, meaning on days this it does not print a paper, the will be invisible in onefifth of the state. And what does a local Community Lose when this type of Community Journalist disappears . You typically lose the person who shows up at the school board meeting. When you have a pullback in coverage and circulation of a state and regional paper, what you typically lose is coverage of the major issues in beth the region and the state. We depend on the state and regional newspapers to kind of bring it all together for us and help us understand what the truly important issues are. Reporter in wyoming, a sixhour commute is not uncommon. Knitting the state together is a role the startribune played in print every single day. Now some news there as it has been in other parts of rural america, will fall through the cracks in the internet. For cbs this Morning Saturday, major garrett, washington. A fifth of readers wouldnt have access to that. I know its a silly thing, but for some it is thats access, but the silly thing is sometimes you do just want to hold that paper. Yeah. The state is grappling with rising coronavirus cases and deaths, quickly becoming the epicenter for covid19. Now its bracing for the alik y alikely arrival of hurricane isaias. Its gaining strengths and could make landfall later today. Covid testing sites were shut down across the state this weekend ahead of the storm. Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli is here with the latest. What is the track . All right, so the track is headed right toward florida. The good news as of the latest advisory it hasnt vethenned since last night strengthened since last night. Thats good news. Heres what im most concerned about Power Outages in florida with no air conditioning in the middle of the summer. That gets dangerous. Lets go to the maps and show the satellite photo. Youll notice that recently it hasnt gotten much stronger at all. Right now the winds are in the low and categoryone area. Now the storm is forecast to move just slightly further east of where it was forecast last night. That should keep the strongest hurricaneforce winds just offshore. However, we have to watch for any wiggle of the storm closer to the coast. The worst of its in florida tonight and tomorrow. And then along the carolina coast as we head into tuesday early in the morning. Then maybe another landfall in new england. Look at the wind gusts. Always you see, the wind as you see, the wind is ramping up during the day and heading into later tonight and tomorrow. Look at the gusts up above 70 miles per hour. Near hurricane force. Expect Power Outages and trees down, as well. As far as rainfall goes, most of the of the heaviest rain will stay off shore until it gets to the midatlantic area and the carolinas where we could see four eight inches of flooding rain. Watch out, prepare yourselves in florida. You have a few more hours, and then the storm moves in later today. The motto of the season, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Jeff, thank you. The Kansas City Chiefs are set to defend their super bowl championship, but they will be without their starting lineman, Laurent Duvernay tardif, who announced hes sitting out this season. Hes just the second medical School Graduate to compete in the nfl and spent nine weeks in the offseason helping out in his hometown of montreal during the height of the covid19 outbreak. It was a crazy offseason. You win the super bowl, and then everything is shut down. Its a pandemic. It was the culmination of a dream for Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman, Laurent Duvernay tardif, winning the super bowl back in february. It was an amazing moment. We won in amendment, 48 hours later we had the parade in kansas city where a Million People showed up. It was just amazing to do that with your friends, your family. The rest of the celebration like vacation with his longtime girlfriend was cut short. News of the Coronavirus Spread sent them back to quebec, canada, their offseason home. Once you were back, how much thought did it take for you in deciding that you wanted to help out in some way . Well, at the beginning, i feel like for everybody it was like how do we manage it personally. Everything is canceled, and you are kind of frustrated about the situation. But at some point you realize im privileged. You know, i still have a job. You know, im well, my family is safe. So then you you start thinking, all right, how can i contribute, how can i help . Reporter lausche entlaurenty graduated from medical school. Drafted by the chiefs in 2014, hed gotten cooperation from the team and montreals press tiejs Mcgill Medical School to follow a fouryear curriculum where hed do four months of study while playing nfl football. When i walked on that stage in 2018 and got the md, it was one of the best moments. Best moments. My life. Once i lifted the lombardi trophy, i felt i was able to combine my passions. Reporter he traces his sense of curiosity and adventure to his childhood, on extended sailing trips with his family. He fell in love with football as a teenager, but in academics, medicine was not his first love. I was more focused on engineering. But i realized quickly you got to be good with your commuter, and im not really good with technology. So i kind of felt that medicine was the perfect balance between Human Interaction and science. Reporter while laurent was able to balance football and medicine while getting his md, playing in the felt n kept him from doing his receptisidency. Without it he couldnt work in a hospital even in a pandemic. He did get a chance to use his training working in a longterm care facility. Did you hesitate at all . No. If you think there was a crisis in the general population, i mean, inside those longterm care facilitis, it was ten times worse. So they needed people to go there and help. Its only when i got the call saying youre starting tomorrow that i actually started asking myself questions. Like am i allowed to do that with my nfl contract . How is it going to play out with my girlfriend, with my parents . How are we going to manage it . This apartment was part of managing it sfoorz keeping his family safe. He used a communal zone to shower and wash clothes before going back home. As for the nfl risk he turned to head coach andy reid whose mother, by coincidence, was also a magill med School Graduate. He said, do what youve got to do. You worked all those years for a reason. Right now thats the best thing you can do is to go back and help. And i remember him saying, like, this is bigger than football. Its about how can you help and save lives or at least be part of a team who do so. So for nine weeks, laurent followed his coachs advice working as what he called a nurse doctor orderly. What was the hardest thing for you working in this facility . When i first started at the beginning, i was really focused on like, all right, give me a task and im going to do it to the best of my ability. Whether its passing medication, changing diapers, feeding people. I quickly realized theres a difference between treating and caring for a patient. Its about making them comfortable and also making sure that they preserve their dignity. And for me, working in this environment, i feel like my m d mindset really changed. That is when he became vulnerable. Thats when you start interacting with human beings instead of sick patients. And when you do that, thats really taking a toll on you emotionally because youre taking your phone, youre facetiming a patients family, and you see the whole family crying in front of their computer because its the first time that they actually seen their father for the past eight weeks. Reporte it wasnt all tears. Laurent was able to bring some joy using his nfl status and contacts. I reached out mark attanastw flens and was like friends and was like, can you send two jerseys and face time at 3 00, sasht patient so happy. It was an amazing thing for the patient but for the personnel. They took time to talk to the nurse and talk to the people. And i think that that was kind of my job going in there. Once again combining his two passions football and medicine. Those nine weeks have been so rich to a certain extent and so emotionally challenging. I feel like people that ive been working in those facilities for the past 30 years, we owe them a lot. And right now more than ever, some doctors, some nurses are living in like trailer parks because they dont want to infect their family or bring it back home to their kids. And to see that people are coming every day with a smile on their face, trying to bring joy and do good is really touching. You havent gone through your residency yet. But it seems like this is already making you a better doctor. Yeah, for sure. Its been quite an experience to be honest. It was not an easy one, but i think i learned a lot. Learning to work with the team around you. Theres no more hierarchy, its everybody working together in order to better care for the patient. Last week laurent announced he would sit out 2020 nfl season. He wrote, i cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that i love. If i am to take risks, i will do it caring for patients. When we spoke in june, he had been planning to return. But that eventual final choice between football and medicine was something already looming. How much longer do you play football, and when do you focus on medicine instead . Honestly i dont know. I dont have that answer. I always told myself, you know, after a super bowl, maybe im going to call it a day. You cant now. I cant. I just love football. I still want to be on that field. I still want to go and win it again. Itd my passion. I feel like once you stop playing football, theres no going back. I can be a doctor for the next 30 years, but if i can be a Football Player for the next two, three, four years, i think ill be a happy man. After talking with him it sdints surprise me to hear it didnt surprise me to hear the decision. This had a huge impact on him. I believe he wants to play football again. Now hes trying to consider what hes going to do. Perhaps he could work in medicine the off season. He has a Great Foundation with kids he can work with, too. Its important to remember this was his decision. We talked about the nba players. His personal decision, and we hope to hear from him again to see what he will be doing. You can tell how much hes thought about all this. So much. I dont know how you would go through that and not be changed even as a doctor. What a great way to start the medical career that he has. And the way he talks about the other doctors and nurses that show up, the joy they have in knowing that theyre helping. Right. And taking care of these especially elderly patients in longterm care facilities who thats what matters, their dignity at the end of the day. Its an unseen threat, you have to wear something to protect yourself, and anxiety reaches a fever pitch. If that sounds like what were contending with today, it was also the plot of bird box. The author John Malerman is out with a thrilling sequel. Well talk to him next. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. [beep] [whoosh] give everyone something to look up to. See this handsome man, his name is william. William fell in love with rose and they had a kid. His name was charles and charles met martha. Isnt she pretty . Yeah. Do not, do not go outside. Avoid social media. Use radio what . What . Thats a scene from the 2018 netflix hit bird box starting Sandra Bullock. Based on the book of the same name, it sprang from the imagination of John Malerman. Now theres a skbel, mallory. While heror is his choice, theres more to it than just a good scare. Before any success in print, author John Malerman was a rock and roller. His band, the high strung, found loyal audiences over two decades and struck gold with the luck you got. The luck you got know it that its not for naught through his love of music, even his band mates saw an itch they encouraged him to scratch. My artistic life definitely started with writing. Kind of like doityourself comic books. In high school, embarrassing emo poems, then short stories, and you think if i can do a short story maybe i can do a novel. My band mates were like, you write music. Maybe you did can write songs. His passions would intertwine. At some point i discovered if you want to do this, to write bac books, and i did, youre going to do it in weird places. Before you do it on stage at the bar youre at, at the local places while youre touring the country. Its not easy to write a horror novel when your band mates are listening to the grateful dead. Horror his genre of choice inspired by classics like dracula and Alfred Hitchcock thrillers. We wasnt just prolific and studied one movie a year, but he got better. Psycho in 1960, he was 60, 61 years old. So he is someone i turn to not just for the steadiness of his career but the fact that you can keep improving in until its over. From the beginning, hes clyborned out more than 30 wouldbe novels. I was writing rough draft after rough draft after rough draft. A friend from high school, he wrote me like, i see on line that youre finishing a lot of novels. I know a guy who represents writers. He opened that door for me. It was almost like a like a dickens story where this mysterious benefactor as long as you stay in motion, you may not end up exactly where you want or envisioned yourself, but you will end up somewhere. Somewhere led him to visualize a scene from bird box, his breakthrough book. It was optioned for a movie a full year before it was published starring sandra bullobul bullo bullock. Where did you come up with the idea . I was riding from florida to detroit, i had a woman and two dids blinded trying to flee something. Do not take your blindfolds off. Do not. Something in the shoreline or water they cant look at. That was exciting because it almost almost an inverse horror story. Usually what you see is whats scary, right. These characters are not allowed to look. All the horror is going to come from from mood, from the sound, from whats in their heads. What are you looking at . What did you see . What is wrong with you . Please stop it but just who was preying on the minds of his characters . I started thinking of the concept of infinity and how, you know, a person could go mad if they attempted to fathom infinity where space ends, where time begins, how our minds arent equipped for it. What an interesting and horrifying idea if there was a knock at your front door and you open it, and infinity personified was standing there. And an entity that you could not comprehend what would happen to you. His sequel, mallory, picks up 12 years after bird box and takes his favorite female protagonist on a search for someone she thought shed lost. I love mallory. Shes most fluid, the smoothest, the character i most relate to. I think that if i was in the bird box world, i would have behaved exactly as mallory did. Never could he have imagined a reallife scenario being played oei in the form of covid19. There was page 152 resonated in my head. You still live by the blindfold, and the blindfold alone. And the first thing that went into my mind was do you live by the mask or not . The truth is stranger than fiction. I had this one second of of mistaking mallory for reality. You know, im hesitant in a sense to draw parallels because, you know, mallory and bird box, these are what i consider the good scare. You know, japanethese are the f scares. What happens now is, whew, is heavy. A film based on mallory is already in development hoping to build upon the reach of bird box. I mean, i dont know if Sandra Bullock could have predicted the success of the movie. Reporter he welcomes it all, even a good will happen script change. Theres a scene in the movie that is not in the book. When mallory intimates that one of the kids may have to look on the river. If i look, we wont make it. That scene wasnt in the book. And i was i contacted the screenwriter after it and was like, can i retroactively add that to the novel somehow . Thats sweet. So is this the end of the road for mallory . Or will she live on . I was thinking about it earlier today. I dont i do really love writing in that world. I really do. Shes always been more than a friend to me. Shes always felt even more than a sister, more like a twin sister. And so i do really like spending time with mallory. So to write another one, yeah, maybe. Maybe. I havent seen bird box you got to watch it. Im terrified now but i kind of want to, too. Its freaky. Man, yeah, prepare yourself. Now youre going to have to read mallory. Thats right. Sometimes the inspiration to read comes from above. Still ahead, how books are dropping from drones to encourage kids to read all summer long. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. For those of it you without local news, cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. For now, im Gwen Baumgardner with a look beyond this mornings mountains. Two british women are world recordholders after completing a trip around the world on a tandem bike. After a global adventure spanning five continents and more than 18,000 miles, tandem cyclists cats dixon and rhys marsden are the proud holders of a Guinness World record. Ive always wanted to cycle around the world. And weve been cycling together for a little while. We started talking when we were riding and said, why not . The women quit their jobs and spent a year building up endurance for what they hoped would be the fastest circumnavigation on a tandem bike. The worldwide ride was no easy feat. After taking off from england last summer, Mother Nature put obstacles in their way. We had rains we had to fires. We had to avoid the smoke and fire. Cycling in smoke is awful. Despite the extreme conditions, the pair averaged 80 miles a day. It was englands travel ban that forced them to pick up the pace. Then of course the pandemic as we were coming back through africa and europe. So it was a race against time for us to get back before before lockdown. Catching one of the last ferries to the uk, the women finished their journey in 263 days, and now have a record to prove it. You were thinking if i can get ply advil and my brute oh delivered by drone, why cant i deliver Library Books . Yeah. We were initially talking about the program as a way to bring kids and Summer Reading together. Reporter kelly pass eek was one of the first to sign up. The librarian reached out to wing with the idea. We need to continue to find ways to bring reading and to bring books to our students. Reporter you took that quite literally absolutely. I found a new way to do it. Reporter when covid closed schools and libraries, wing flew in to help the students. This is one way that we can help bridge the gap. Reporter about 600 kids live in the delivery area. They can send in a book request electron catholic message to pa. She packages it and drops it off and weighing it, the drones can only carry up to three pounds, and send it to folks like lily, five minutes away. She had stopped reading for a while. Wed been stuck home from school. Reporter a touchless delivery from above of more than 50 books and counting since midjune. And kids dont have to return them until inperson dlaclasses resume. We think its the only place in the world where you can get books delivered by drone. I hahave readers requesting a book. If i can get a book to a student because theyre excited about a drone delivery, thats also success. They have one more book than they had before. Cool. The only thing is that you cant thank the librarian for getting you the books. Reporter do you want to say thank you now . Yes. Thank you, librarian. Reporter thank yous have also come in pictures like these of excited students. Passeks real reward is knowing kids like lily are getting lost in the pages of a new story, however its delivered. This morning on the dish a trip to a place where food is usually frowned upon, the museum. That is hardly case in brooklyn, new york. The museum of food and drink was founded to showcase culinary traditions from across the globe while educating visitors about the cultures they come from. And now mo fad is facing a new challenge to continue its mission in the virtual world. This is the most amount ive ever cooked in my home ever. It was the perfect pairing an online food conversation and demonstration with famed israeliborn chef Michael Solmonov and his friend and fellow cookbook author in israel. It might have been like 2 00 a. M. For her. In all fairness, whenever we hang out its usually 2 00 in the morning anyways. The hangout this time had more involved includeatiing a virtual audience. To have something that brings the purpose back to what matters, the people in our life that matter, you know, that was like really the opportunity. Soup is something at least right now thats bringing uth together. Isnt it . Food definitely is. I think we have this opportunity to have these sort of underactions that are in a way public but are also spanning different continents. Stathe program was put toget by the museum of food and drink. They talked about, you know, quarantine cooking and the middle eastern pantry staples, and chef mike demonstrated his fiveminute hummus. Well make the peanuthe sauc hey, i can zoom in with the food processor. The Program Director for the Program Using food to educate, inspire, and bring people together. The purpose is to show that food is culture. Its not just about cooking classes, and its not just about eating at restaurants. We are really interested in telling the stories of food. Sharing the history, contextualizing food. It started as a mobile e exhibition, and while in the process of relocating came covid19. So how did you guys pivot once the pandemic hit and you knew you had to do Something Different . It was very challenging and really overwhelming. My concern at first, everybody was pivoting to on line. There was so much content happening. It became apparent that actually this was an opportunity to even grow our community. Once you reopen as operators, what changes are going to come first . I mean, its impossible to say really. Reporter mofad first looked within its own community, giving an oorchl famplified to others g backstrom in new england. They were kind enough to put us on the platform to help people and spread the word that we have a food bank and if anyone needs it, to come. You said you learned from it. What did you learn . Just, you know, that were not alone. That theres a lot of support and goodwill. You want to look like this by connecting food creators and food lovers from around the world virtually, mofad expanded its base in ways never envisioned. All visitors need a computer or smartphone, and theyre transported to online cooking classes you can see its not sitting on top and even dinner parties. Were giving them recipes, were giving them boxes of ingredients. They can order. A way to sort of cook together even if were not together and we sit down at the same time and connect on line. Its in though moments that mofad found food can also be a gateway to conversation about the issues of the day. This is a new series like racism against Asian Americans during the pandemic. We have had a couple of Panel Conversations comparing it to food. Weve talked about chinese restaurants, the survival of restaurants and chinatowns, food taboos as they relate to xenophobia and our own cultural bias. What have you found in conversations . I think its difficult. The younger restaurants euare trying to help older restaurants find means to innovate and strategize now so they dont have to shut their doors. But its a difficult situation. We use food as a lens to understand ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Catherine talks about food and drink it brings people together of different background. How important is that now . I think thats incredibly important. Im going to butcher this quote, but i think that lea chase something along the lines of, you know, we all gather together at the table. And we talk and can change the world. I think thats really, really true. Thats the power of food. [ chants ] a power that even before the black lives matter protests began mofad hoped would help tell the story of the africanamerican contribution to our countrys food history. Its exhibit, africanamerican making the nations table, had its opening postponed by the pandemic. We are exploring ways to open it virtually. You know, how do we get this Larger Community than we ever had before able to really see these stories and begin to uncover history that was lost or not told . Mofad is a little bit of an activist organization. Its uncovering inequities and saying come together, come together around this thing that you love. Should we be reheating call it mofads recipe for success from the very start. Food is culture and ancestry and advocacy, and its where you come from. Its part of what you are. Its your memories. Its conflict, commonality. All those things. Obviously a museum sort of to celebrate that or to have a discussion about that is of the utmost importance. And i know we said it in the piece, but its a thing that brings us together. It is a place where you can have difficult questions because are you gathering around it. Cant bring us together in the same way inside restaurants right now unfortunately, but it was fun to look at all the food. Were both hungry and to talk about celebrating food.
