Featuring jon batiste and stay homin. And now, live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen ready . Thanks. I truly dont know what to do about this hair. It is so what do you want me to do . Why dont i cut it for you . Stephen you cut away you dont want to. Youre afraid. Youre afraid, youre afraid. Im afraid. Stephen i have to do something about the hair because, i have to use so much product to keep this from happening up here. Just be shaggy. Just be yourself. Stephen just be shaggy . Because right now its got a very don jr. Look. Im not liking it. The deep tan doesnt help either. Go natural. Stephen au naturale . Okay. Tomorrow, no hair spray, no pants. Welcome to a late show. Im your host, Stephen Colbert. Were back after a twoweek break. Hey, you know what i wish would also come back . Governance. We could really use some right now. Because the coronavirus continues to surge in america, where were up to 3. 3 million cases. And yesterday, florida shattered the u. S. Record for new single day covid19 cases. That of course belongs with other florida records like highest number of illegal petting zoo fatalities, most nude at hardees, and most nude at illegal petting hardees. According to the Florida Department of health an oxymoron if there ever was one the state reported 15,299 new covid19 cases yesterday. Ors ju throw a condom over the whole state. Despite this surge in cases, on saturday, Walt Disney World officially reopened. That is not safe disney only has one doc, and hes already busy with sleepy and sneezy plus, the whole states screwed because their governors dopey now, to disneys credit, only Magic Kingdom and disneys Animal Kingdom are open. Epcot wanted to open, but americans arent even allowed to visit pretendeurope. So coronavirus cases are skyrocketing, but dont worry, because the white house is working hard on an aggressive new plan to discredit dr. Anthony fauci. So, the guy youre undermining during a Public Health crisis is your top Public Health expert. Thats like discrediting lassie right when she starts barking. What is it, girl . Did timmy fall down a well . barking why should i believe you . The president says you spend all your time licking your own butt stephen over the weekend, the administration ramped up their attacks on fauci, because trump doesnt want to talk about coronavirus. Instead, he wants voters to focus on another issue no, radical left anarchists, agitators, looters or protesters will not be knocking down or harming the washington monument, the lincoln or jefferson memorials, or just about any other federal monumrnt. Er mer gerd ther knerckin dern the monumrts meanwhile, fauci is out there saying things like this about covid19. As a country, when you compare us to other countries, i dont think you can say were doing great. I mean, were just not. Stephen as trump how dare you, fauci . What kind of monster would say americas not doing great and needs to be made great again . Its really hard to do that voice after you havent done it for two weeks. Its just, its very painful. Even though fauci is part of the administrations own task force, the white house is treating him as if he were a warring political rival, and the list of faucis statements sent to journalists was laid out in the style of a campaigns Opposition Research document. You dont like his diagnosis, so you try to destroy his reputation. Makes sense. Thats why i took out this ad dr. Glen eichler, wrong on my blood pressure, wrong for america. Paid for by Stephen Colberts who want to eat more carbs. Stephen the main thrust of their attack is that americabouw often dr. Fauci has been wrong. Well, if theyre worried about fauci, they should really warn us about this Government Official, who got a few things wrong we have it totally under control. Its one person coming in from china. You know, in april, supposedly it dies with the hotter weather. The people are getting better. They are all getting better. When you have 15 people, and the 15, within a couple of days, is going to be down to close to zero. You have to be calm. It will go away. Relative to other countries, we have very few cases. I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do Something Like that . By injection inside, or or, almost a cleaning . Be a cleaning. About four months from now. No way this prediction will ever come back to bite me in the ass slam stephen with coronavirus surging across the nation, parents are wondering how and if schools will be able to reopen in the fall. On the one hand, parents are worried it may not be safe to send kids back. On the other hand, send the kids back theres only so much paw patrol and peppa pig an adult human can take trumps behind in every national poll, so hes desperate for the schools to reopen. He even tweeted this threat the dems think it would be bad for them politically if u. S. Schools open before the november election, but it is important for the children and families. May cut off funding if not open as trump must open need english class not understand where go sentence subject of that is a big threat to schools open or lose some of your funding. And to reinforce that message, trump sent out secretary of education and woman just learning she was secretary of education, betsy devos. Devos was on a bunch of the , immediy doubledown on trthreat rican investment ieducat a pr. If schools arent going to reopen and not fulfill that promise, they shouldnt get the funds. Stephen thats right. If schools arent going to reopen and not fulfill that promise, they shouldnt get the funds. Because nothing says youre a great secretary of education like a sentence with a triple negative. Thats like watching the secretary of the navy go on tv and drown in a kiddie pool. Understandably, there are some concerns about returning to school such as, you know, the dying stuff. Which is why Chris Wallace asked about kids spreading the virus. Ive been told the science there isnt so clear, secretary. How they spread the virus, conceivably to their parents, to their grandparents, to teachers in the school, to custodians in the school. Do we know that . Well, that is something that is obviously continuing to be looked at and studied, and thspreaders. Sting. Soave so data suggest ve had kids. My children started school in 1999. And i am almost over the cold i caught that year. Rabid raccoons are less of a disease vector than children. Then devos went over to cnn, where she was asked about whether or not the department of education had a plan for reopening the schools. Her answer was a resounding, i dont know. Do you have a plan for but for what students the plan and what schools should do . So. Schools should do whats right on the ground at that time for their students and for their situation. There is no one uniform approach that we can take nat or should take nationwide. Stephen so the plan is make your own plan. Id love to see a devos family recipe. Betsys brownies. Step one find someone who knows how to make brownies. Step two enjoy those brownies. Step three, endanger children. E wamaift inovid poli from the president this weekend when he went to visit patients and staff at walter reed medical center. After months of refusing to wear a mask because he was afraid hed be made fun of brace yourselves he finally put one on. And i just want to say haha this was all the long con weve been wearing them just to get you to look stupid. Youve been healthd. Trump maintains that hes been a mask man all along. I think when youre in a hospital, you should definitely wear a mask. Ill be wearing a mask. I think hopefully i look good in a mask. Ive never been against masks. But i do believe they have a time and a place. Stephen yes, theres a time and a place. Pandemic, and face. Speaking of trump covering things up over the break, we got some news about former Trump Campaign adviser and head the hat came with, roger stone. Remember roger stone . If not, lets catch you up. Previously, on roger stone roger stone vows that he will never testify against the president , and says he had no contact with wikileaks on the clinton campaigns stolen emails. President trump is praising his former longtime associate roger stone over his refusal to testify against him to the special counsel. Roger stone was arrested, to ce charges in Robert Muellers russia investigation. Hes accused of lying to a Congressional Committee and witness tampering. Now to the verdict tonight involving roger stone guilty on all counts. Well, you cant win em all, batman. And now, tonights episode of roger stone. Stephen when last we checked on roger stone, it looked like bu has been sent served. Back to the kitchen. Because on friday, trump commuted stones sentence. Which is an outrageous abuse of power and, of course he did. Roger stone was a trump loyalist for the entire process, and now hes being rewarded with a get out of jail free card. Which makes sense, given that stone dresses just like the monopoly guy. Still, first michael flynn, and now roger stone . Trump is clearly breaking out his cronies for one last heist. Its all in the new caper collusions eleven. Criticism of the move was swift. Even by republican senators pat toomey and mitt romney, who tweeted, unprecedented, historic corruption an american president commutes the sentence of a person convicted by a jury of lying to shield that very president. Yeah, but thats just one of the perks of being on the trump train. He promises his people unlimited pardons, one free mypillow, and a lifetime of getting your food spit in at restaurants. Other members of the g. O. P. Joined in with this statement crickets wolf howling i believe that the president has learned president has learned president has learned. Stephen she will be missed. But we did get a rare statement from special counsel robert mueller. Now thats a name ive not heard in a long time. A long time. Ind senar fromagree with the tooine. On saturday, mueller wri, russias actions were a threat to americas democracy. It was critical that they be investigated and understood. Stone was prosecuted and convicted because he committed federal crimes. He remains a convicted felon, and rightly so. Or as that statement was redacted by bill barr americas democracy remains rightly so. Hey theres huge news in the world of sports. Evie and i worked on a puzzle last night. evie laughing its one of those new yorker cover puzzles . So great. Im tired. Stephen so great. Im tired she gets the edges down really fast. Lots of fun. Only a few head injuries. evie laughing theres also news from the n. F. L. Because after decades of backlash from anyone with a conscience, the washington idontreallywanttosayits names have decided to change their team name and logo. Never a great sign when your social wokeness is a month behind a pancake company. Today, the Team Released a statement saying that theyre working to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise. A commitment to progress that wouldve hit a little harder had the statement not used the teams name seven times and included their logo. Wow, theyre almost as good at p. R. As they are at football. Im told they havent had a good season in a while. The team decided to make the change after looking deeply into their money, because the change came only after their sponsor fedex released a statement asking the team to change its name. So get ready for the washington 12digit tracking numbers. Theres also an ongoing controversy about comments made last week by goya foods c. E. O. Robert unanue. Trump invited unanue to the white house on thursday to highlight a new Advisory Commission the presi americans. To create new now given the awful things trump has said and done to hispanic people and hispanic people make up a significant portion of unanues Customer Base you might think that unanue wouldnt be the biggest fan of the president. But youd be wrong, because heres what he said mr. President , what can i tell you . Im so blessed to be here in the most prosperous country in the world, the greatest country in the world. And were so blessed to have you as our leader. Stephen well, turns out, praising a man who repeatedly vilifies the latinx people did not sit well with latinx people. Because right after unanues comments, calls immediately started online to boycott goya food with hashtag goyaway. Fun fact, goy away is what the mohel yelled at me that one time i attended a bris. I stole his joke about working for tips. Unanue was stunned that aligning himself with president baby cage would rub people the wrong way, as he explained the next day on the fox hey bob, are you getting a boycott . Thats what ive heard. Because you had the audacity to show up at the president s invitation and say some positive things about him . You know, brian, yes, and, you know, its suppression of speech. Stephen yes this boycott is a violation of unanues First Amendment rights. Its right there in the Constitution Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or abridging the freedom of speech. And no matter what the bean man says, you must buy beans from the bean man. Im james madison, and i love beans. But unanues not alone. Trumps allies responded to the boycott with their own plan to buy as much goya as possible, in what they dubbed a buycott. Because buycott is what their spouses will demand after eating all those beans. as spouse youre not bringing that bean butt into my bed, buddy. Go buy cott. Thats my audrey meadows. As part of the movement, one republican congressional candidate tweeted, just had a cup of coffee and two cans of goya beans take that, libs time to start the day. You know, folks, the global pandemic, the justice system, and our schools arent the only things being undergovernmented. Remember trumps border wall . For those of you whove always thought its great, but i wish there was a stupider version, youre in luck, because a group of Trump Supporters decided to go around the federal government and raise 25 million online to help trumps mission by building this threemile stretch of wall. Unfortunately, according to engineers, the wall never should have been built so close to the river, and is now showing signs of runoff erosion and is in danger of falling into the rio grande. You know, when a wall falls into r,e t bridge. This d. I. Y. Wall was the brain child of privntractortowould bef walls. And hes got a point. When it falls down, it will be moving much faster than walls usually do. Funding for fishers wall came from a private Online Fundraising group called we build the wall and oh, no. Oh, no, they built their logo too close to the river well, when news of the breaking wall broke, donald trump was quick to condemn it, tweeting yesterday, i disagreed with doing this very small tiny section of wall, in a tricky area, by a private group which raised money by ads. It was only done to make me look bad, and perhsps it now doesnt even work. Yes, perhisspss this was a secret plot. We built the walls board is loaded with typical deepstate antitrumpers, like kris kobach, sheriff david clarke, and steve bannon. It makes sense. I mean, steve bannon himself is just a slowly collapsing structure, and oh, no oh, no, they built him too close to the river at least the administration now knows this guy, tommy fisher, is abumbling fraud, which is why billion contract to build more walls. as trump hold on, this guy takes billions of dollars to do things he doesnt know how to, and it all ends in disaster . My first guest tonight is the anchor and managing editor of cbs evening news. Please welcome Norah Odonnell. Hello, Norah Odonnell. Good evening, how are you . Stephen its good. Hearing you say good evening from the news desk there makes me feel like youre about to interview me. Its slightly unnerving. Hey can we switch it around . laughter stephen congratulations on the oneyear anniversary of anchoring the cbs evening news. Thank you. Its hard to believe. What a year its been. I mean, as you know, this news cycle has been quite intense, from the impeachment to a pandemic, a president ial primary, now an election and protests. And in many ways, we sort of feel that, you know, covering the news is like sipping water from a fire hose. But we try, every night, you know, to try to make sense of it all. And, it has. Its been like unlike, i should say, any other year ive ever had in my career in journalism. Stephen do you see any commonality between all these stories . Because you said it is like sipping water from a fire hose. But theres been, like, a decade worth of news, in every month. Every month, yeah. I mean, look, i think that the protests, in many ways, grew out of a deep interest in the news. I think we saw record viewerships, so people were watching because of covid19. People were attuned to what was going on in their community. They were attuned to racial disparities, in terms of the way that covid was affecting minorities and African Americans and hispanics. And so, people really tuned in to what was going on. They were on social media. And so, we first covered the case of amaud arbery, of course, the georgia jogger who was shot, and i think that that and then george floyd, and so i think theres an attuned electorate, and one that is ready for a reckoning. Stephen and now, when im talking to you right now, are you actually in the studio, at the news room, or at home . Is this im actually this is in the washington bureau. So, we have a socially distanced crew here. We have masks. I have my mask, that i wear until, you know, i sit down here. Everybody in the crew wears gloves and masks, and we wash our hands frequently and, so far, we have been doing it like this since the pandemic began. Stephen well, you moved down there you actually started the actual broadcast you dont say show, your news. You guys broadcast, we do shows. laughter your broadcast of the cbs evening news started in december down there. Yeah. Stephen hows the move been . Whats the difference from doing your broadcast in new york and in d. C. It was incredibly fortuitous. We ended up coming to washington. We wanted to do that because it was going to be an election, and we wanted to be at the heart of covering this presidency, which takes a lot of work. Turns out it was impeachment, too. Who could have predicted that. So we covered all the impeachment hearings and the global pandemic. It seemed the timing was incredibly fortuitous. Every night when the pandemic began we were trying to figure out about the president s Coronavirus Task force and tried to figure out what the government was going to do to keep the country safe. For the past months we have been in the studio, not interviewing anybody here because we have been social distancing. Stephen you have to maintain a public objectivity which i will not try to pierce with my questions, but i will say from my own point of view the government has abdicated their role for leadership in this time of covid. Journalists seem to be the ones trying to get out the proper information to the American Public right now about the health and safety concerns and the need for social distancing, wearing masks. What do you feel the role of journalism is right now in the time of the covid crisis . Well, look, ive always believed journalism is a public service. Walter cronkite who sat in this chair said journalism is what we need to make democracy work, we need an informed electorate. I didnt think i would be a Public Health official. My father is an Infectious Disease doctor and he does Public Health work. It does seem like every night we do Public Health work. During this crisis were not sharing peoples opinions, were having people with m. D. S and phds on because the curiosity is vast in terms of how is the virus spread, is it airborne, what are the surfaces . What is the treatment . We do a piece called racing for the cure, what are the therapeutics, when will a vaccine come, will schools be safe. I do feel like our role as Public Health officials is one im not used to but one weve embraced. Stephen when was the last time you spoke to anthony fauci. So the last time we had dr. Fauci on this show was three mont a stephen are you surprised that the administration isnt allowing him to go on shows like yours . Because i assume youve tried to get him since. Well, you would think that any administration would want one of the most trusted men in america to be your spokesperson, to explain whats going on and what the administration is doing. We have been requesting dr. Fauci since april, so for more than three months, more than a dozen times and have been denied by the white house. In that time, stephen, the number of deaths increased over 100,000. Its unclear stephen weve tried to talk to him and i can understand them not allowing him to come on this clown show, but have they given you a rationale as to why he is not going on the evening news broadcast . They say hes unavailable. But my sense is there have been a number of polls taken, the most recent poll say 67 of Americans Trust dr. Fauci and 24 of Americans Trust the president when it comes to the virus. So i think thats the sense that they dont want fauci disagreeing with the president , but, look, we want to know hes the head of the n. I. H. Infectious disease unit and also in charge of vaccines. We want to know whats the status. As a mother, id like to know should we be sending our kids back to school in the fall, how do we do it safely . So many questions as someone gency, funded by taxpayer dollars, the knowledge that this man who served five president s can impart to the American Public is incredibly important and its a real question by this white house as to why theyre trying to squelch that Public Health information. Stephen my understanding is you actually know anthony fauci. I do know dr. Fauci. Turns out he lives a couple of blocks from my husbands restaurant. I dont think hed mind me saying i catch him at the bar every now and then having a beer and burger with his wife. Not since the pandemic began. Stephen i was going to say, faucis hitting clubs, thats news. No, way back when. laughter you sometimes see him in the neighborhood on a walk, and hes a very friendly guy. As a reporter, i have been able to call his cell phone and speak with him, so hes not hiding from the press, but he is being blocked by the white house from speaking on television. He is able to do some print and podcast interviews. Stephen can you text me his phone number so i can give him a quick ring to see how hes doing . I will. Ill ask his permission and i dont think it should be a problem and you will be surprised, he should pick up. Stephen youve covered six president ial elections, but of course theres no election like this one, and in june you got to sit down with Vice President joe biden. What was it like to do an interview socially distanced . Ive interviewed the Vice President but just over zoom like we are right now. What did you do to make sure that was a safe interview . We were in houston, therefore, the George Floyds funeral. It was joe bidens first trip out of delaware since the pandemic began. He was meeting with the family. We met at a restaurant. We had our temperature taken. There were swarms of secret Service Agents in masks and gloves. One of the Vice President s aids was carrying around it was a 2gallon jug of purelle with a giant pump on it, it was like nothing ive ever seen in my life. Of course, our fantastic cbs news crew had us sitting 12 feet apart to maintain extra social distancing, and then one of the Vice President s aids came and measured it and apparently it was only 11 feet and 8 inches, so we had to move back another 4 inches. At that point, i said, mr. Vice president , can you hear me from over there the other side of the room . But thats now, thats the world we live in, which,u lyesng, d in what wokm is h miniraht be georyd aof trent oneinissues shs what he talked to the family about. And i think thats one of the only trips that the Vice President , if im right, has taken outside of at least the delawarepennsylvania area was to go to that funeral. He actually did not attend the if you recall. He just met with the family before the funeral because there were many people inside the funeral and i think it would have been a Public Health concern for him, given his age. Stephen Norah Odonnell. Its a common playbook of authoritarians to try to denigrate and undermine the press, so there can be no umpires, lets say, in the game, calling balls and strikes about what is true and what is not true. This president is no different. Is it disheartening to you to see the increased and continuous attacks on the press by this administration and their supporters . Well, the most important thing is the dissemination of facts, and, so, when there is an attack on facts, an attack on Important Information that gives citizens the information they need to vote properly, that concerns me. Stephen you have been attacked personally by the president. Yes. Stephen and you have interviewed a biomedical whistleblower in the administration. Right. Stephen who was worried about the administrations dedication about giving all the manort aboufia vaccine. Start. We still have the only interview with dr. Rick bright which is a part of the Agency Congress just gave billions and billions of dollars to which is at the forefront of funding, you know, who gets whos going to have the needles for the syringes for the vaccine, whos going to produce the glass bottles, the masks that we need, whos going to replenish the National Stockpiles for p. P. E. S, all that, and dr. Rick bright kept saying to the white house we need more masks and we need to do this, and he was fired for doing that, the white house says for leaking to the press, so he became a whistleblower. He did his only interview with us, and i do think its important to hold Public Officials accountable and whistleblowers are an important part of it. And since we did the interview and aired the concerns this Government Official has about how our tax dollars is being saved to protect the citizens, the president attacked me in a tweet. That goes with the territory of being a journalism. It doesnt bother me if i know we have our facts straight and we can stand on top of that as journalist and it was a pretty rocksolid story. Stephen besides the journalism, you make same for something else. Can you tell me whats going on here . It just so happened i gave blood today. We should have started with this because the sticker i got said be nice to me. So be nice to me, stephen youre always nice to me i gave blood today. laughter because of this Public Health role we were talking about, one of the stories, i mean, i read everything, is that theres a critical blood shortage in america. We wanted to do this a couple of months ago and i must say i got a little concerned because it was really the height of the crisis in the northeast region, but today i went and gave blood in order to, you know, help send a message that it is safe to give blood. Stephen is that why theres a shortage because people are afraid to go in someplace and have a needle stuck in their arm now . Yeah, because of covid 19, they had to close a number of the Blood Donation centers. Theyre trying to ramp it back up because they like to have a fiveday supply of blood, theyre down to a twoday supply of blood. Theyre trying to encourage people to give blood. One person who gives blood can save peoples lives, so that was my thing to do today to try and give back and send a message. I feel absolutely fine and they gave me apple juice and cheez its at the end. Stephen thats worth the trip there. Thank you so much for being here. So glad to see you. Take care. But when i put my white voice on and ask him for directions he just gives em to me with a dap and a smile see, not everybody racist but we just tryna be prepared for all the hatred we get cause if i make the wrong turn and stop at a gas station listen, theres a small chance that i could probably be lynched in 2019, and probably still in 2020 and probably twenty years later cause this aint gon leave its never gon end, thats why i gotta scribble this pen cause i got a voice and no one in my generation dont ever say cause it aint cool to talk like this but chalk lines tracin of bodies make me drop my my job is this, say truth to make your jawlines drip so if i get flipped, this message is in all my hits he was just a drug dealer, record wasnt clean so we see him as a thug he was just a crazy man, he blew up the school just to say he can, i love this girl, this girl loves me even though im a girl too, she my aw, we all brothers and sisters we all brothers and sisters, we all brothers stephen thank you, idk, well be right back.
