For the past two decades, david troop watched the triangle change as neighbors have been priced out. Affordability for housing has gotten worse. And theres a shortage of it. When a local developer announced plans to build market rate apartments on market street. He didnt fight it. Instead, he and his neighbors fought for an affordability component. The neighborhood is pushing for as many affordability units as we can get. Neighbors endured six years of construction only to find out they werent going to be the apartments they expected. Saunder, a Hospitality Company leased and furnished a majority of the units, turning the building into a corporate rental. Neighbors were furious. We were shocked as an organization, and as a neighborhood. It felt like a real betrayal. Then the pandemic hit. Now saunder wants out. In a lawsuit against the developer, the 1. 3 billion company says regulations put in place by the city and the state are crippling saunders ability to make money. The lawsuit sites San Franciscos Eviction Moratorium that prevents landlords from evicting anyone who cant pay because of covid19 or collecting until january 2021. It states the laws have had a material adverse effect a crushing one on saunders operations at the premises. Saunder cant market vacant units or ensure existing tenants pay rent. I think saunder, theyre just opportunists, and they only care about money. The developer plans to counter sue, hoping to keep saunder in place. He says this property was always meant to be longer term rentals. Adding saunder asked for three to four monthsrent a abatement. We strongly disagree with the position advanced by saunder in the litigation. If saunder wins, what happens to the building . My hope is that these units will return to san franciscans and that we can stabilize our communities again. Shes an activist by accident. She was evicted back in 2013 and watched as her entire neighborhood was turned into shortterm rentals. These are not neighbors. Just as with the shortterm rentals. These are not people invested in our communities. As weve reported previously on project home, companies have turned rent controlled apartments into corporate rentals in the past. Thats now illegal. Supervisor, erin, passed an ordinance banning corporate rentals in ren controlled builds and it limits the number of corporate rentals to 1,000 or fewer in all of San Francisco and requires owners to report the duration of each stay and length of vacancies. Neighbors say the ordinance is an important step. Brth that closing this heir loophole will prevent the next one from being exploited. Im not convinced money is a strong motivator. And there are always loopholes to be found in the law. We did reach to saunder for comment on this story. And they did not respond to our requests. Kpix 5. You werent able to get rid of the cloud cover today. Its going to spread inland as we head through tonight. Pretty far inland for this time of the year. Dropping visibilitys through the evening and over night hours, then the fog backs up toward the coast. Clinging to the coast by tomorrow afternoon. By today, i think the fog will back up to the golden gate. Maybe farther west of that before it spreads inland once again tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. Future cast latching on to the possibility of moisture. Again, this would measurable. S almostalways over do that. Thts going to be the extent of that mist and drizzle on the coast.
