Welcome to the weekend, im Dana Jacobson along with Michelle Miller and jeff glor. We have a bit of sad news as we wake up to the news of Congress John lewis passing. A legend for equality. While it hurts the heart of anyone who cares about equality, michelle, we know youve met him many times. Indeed, i have. Each time was memorable. You always felt like you were in the presence of greatness, kind strength mixed with that air of humility all his own. Of course, we begin with that news that came overnight. Congressman june lewis of georgia, one of the leading figures of the 1960s civil rights era, has died. He was 80 years old. Lewis was a protege of the reverend dr. Martin luther king jr. Together they challenged the segregated south. Lewis continued to fight for civil rights throughout his career. And last december he revealed he had stagefour pancreatic cancer and said he had never faced a battle like it. Lewis told cbs this morning last month he believed his health was improving. Ed okeefe shows how lewis was at the heart of black americas struggle for equality for more than six decades. We still have work to do. Reporter congressman john lewis was the youngest leader of the Civil Rights Movement and its enduring storyteller. He helped organize the march on washington in august, 1963. His death means there is no longer anyone alive who spoke that day. We do not want our freedom gradually. But we want to be free now. [ cheers ] reporter two years later, lewis led a march from selma to montgomery, alabama. Marching today from selma to montgomery. We are marching to our State Capitol to show the nation and the world our determination to win citizenship. Reporter that ended abruptly at the bottom of the Edmund Pettis bridge. You have to move on this is an unlawful assembly. You have to disperse. Reporter a day seared in the memories of most americans as bloody sunday. I was the first person to be hit. And i still have the scar on my forehead. And i was knocked down. My legs just went out from under me. I thought i was going to die on this bridge. Reporter as a College Student, lewis led sitins at lunch counters. He became a freedom rider, risking his life for deforestation. He was there when Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights acts. He was beaten, spit at, and over the course of his life arrested more than 45 times all for what he called got trouble. I metrosa parks when i was 16. I met dr. King. These two individuals inspired me to get in troublement and ive been getting in good trouble, necessary trouble ever since. Reporter elected to congress in a atlanta district in 1966, he was a liberal democrat who pushed for civil rights, gay rights, and boycotted two president ial inaugurations. I would ask that all of my colleagues join me on the floor. Reporter days after a mass shooting in 2016, lewis led an unprecedented sitin on the floor of the house trying and failing to secure votes for guncontrol legislation. Reporter throughout his life he remained a living reminder of the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. When people tell me nothing has changed, i feel like saying come and walk in my shoes. I will show you. I will take you to these places. Reporter on capitol hill, lewis was one of the few lawmakers left universally admired on both sides of the aisle. In part for simple moments like it one last year at the height of the impeachment fight, lewis participated in a bipartisan tribute to retiring georgia senator johnny isaacson, a republican. Lewis ended his remarks with something rarely seen in washington anymore he crossed the house floor for a handshake and a hug between a democrat and a republican. [ applause ] in june he visited black lives matter plaza in washington. The civil rights icon stood on the spot of the new mural and said that it sends a mighty powerful and strong message to the rest of the world. Ed okeefe, cbs news, washington. Former president barack obama awarded john lewis the president ial medal of freedom in 2011. In a statement posted on media, mr. Obama writes, quote, he loved there country so that much he risked life and his blood so that it might live up to its promise. Through the decades, he not only gave all of himself to the cause of freedom and justice but inspired generations that followed to try to live up to his example. Reflecting on the moments before taking his own oath in 2009 he writes, quote, when i was lengthed president of the United States elected president of the United States i hugged him on the inauguration stand before i was sworn in and told him i was only there because of the sacrifices he made. The former president goes on to say, not many of us get to live to see our own legacy play out in such a meaningful, remarkable way. John lewis did. One of congressman lewis lastknown public appearances, as we mentioned, was at the black lives matter plaza in washington. Last month wearing a mask and using a cane, he stood tall on the bold yellow painted lettersment he was joined by washington mayor Muriel Bowser. Coanchor gayle king spoke to lewis just ten days after george floyd died at the hands of police in minneapolis. He expressed his feelings of seeing a new generation of activists speak out. Does this feel and look different to you . This feels and looks so different. It is so much more massive and all inclusive to see people from all over the world taking to the streets, to the roadways, to stand up, to speak up, to speak out. To do what i call getting in trouble. And with the sense of determination and commitment and dedication there will be no turning back. People now understand what the struggle was all about. Its another step down the very, very long road toward freedom, justice for all humankind. As he said, there will be no turning back. We are now joined by civil rights leader and former u. N. Ambassador andrew young. He helped draft the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and called john lewis a friend. Good morning, ambassador. John lewis was really thank you for being with Us John Lewis was really one of my heroes even though im older than he was. We all know about john lewis the icon, but he was your friend. Tell us about him as your good friend. John lewis was maybe the quietest member of the Civil Rights Movement. He could laugh, and he could joke, but he was very seldom rowdy, loud, or he had no ego at all. He had the power of humility that just won people over to him. He didnt push. He wasnt angry, and he had many reasons to be angry. But he was always dominated by that loving spirit in his life, that well, there was a power in his humility. Just made people want to follow him. Actually, i came from new york go on, sir. No, i moved from new york back to atlanta in 1961 after i saw the nashville sitin story on television. And i had been in the south before and Little Country churches, i thought i was out of the south until he came on with the nashville sitin story, and we realized that our place was back in atlanta. He got you to come back, in fact. And he said the come home, your wife was like, im coming. Martin luther king jr. s legacy has been with us since his passing. Do you think it will be the same with congressman lewis legacy . That generations from now will say and feel the way they do about him . I think this generation knows john lewis. And i think that john lewis and ct vivian who passed day before yesterday will be remembered for their tactical work, for their philosophical contributions, but mostly for their nonviolent presence in the face of severe danger and the willingness to march fearlessly through the valleys of the shadow of death did he, in fact, understand his own legacy, mr. Ambassador . Just how many lives he touched . I think he did because he touched almost everybody in the house of representatives during the 34 years that he served there. And he campaigned for them in their own districts. And hes probably been to every state in the Union Campaigning for members of congress. That was one of the reasons why he had so much political and moral influence because they knew that what he said he meant, and that thehes willing to liv and die by it. So there was a kind of integrity that you dont find often. There is a documentary that is out now called good trouble, and i know that you are a fan. So we will be hearing more about the congressman later on in this show. Mr. Ambassador, we thank you. Andrew young, our former ambassador to the u. N. Well have much more on the life and legacy of congressman john lewis coming up in our next hour. Ahead, well show you more of his conversation with cbs Bob Schieffer when they met on the Edmund Pettis bridge before the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday. As you just heard ambassador young mention, the life of another major force of the civil right rightsmovement is being remembered. Rev trend ct vivian was part of the southern leadership countries and a key adviser to Martin Luther king jr. His life of activism began in the 1940s when he organized a lunch counter sitin in illinois. He registered black voters in selma and started a College Readiness program. Reporter in an interview airing this weekend on fox news sunday, President Trump says he has no plans to implement a National Mask order. Hey, dr. Fauci said dont wear a mask. Our surge at general, terrific guy, said dont wear a mask. Everyone was saying dont wear a mask. All of a sudden everyones got to wear a mask. Michael george, cbs news, new york. Cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. Surgical green n95 white hospital blue. These are the colors of one nation uniting in gratitude thankful for everyone who wears these colors to the fight. We salute you. In his more than 60 years of fighting for civil rights, congressman john lewis found himself in a lot of what he called good trouble. Perhaps his defining moment came in 1965 in alabama during the selmatomontgomery march. As a protege of the reverend Martin Luther king, it was lewis who helped lead the 54mile march which was meant to advocate for the right to vote. The protesters ran into trouble as soon as they started to cross the Edmund Pettus bridge. 50 years after that event, cbs Bob Schieffer walked the bridge with lewis to hear the story of that fateful day. We were marching in twos in an orderly, peaceful, nonviolent fashion, on our way to montgomery to drama ties to the nation that people wanted to register to vote. I really thought we would be arrested and jailed that day. Reporter when did you realize when you got to the high point here, thats when you saw all of the Law Enforcement people down there. We saw down below the state troopers, and behind the state troopers were the sheriffs on horseback. We got to the bottom of the bridge turn around and disperse. It came toward us, meeting us with night sticks, using teargas and trampling us with horses. Reporter you were right in the front i was in the very front. Reporter you were among the first that was hit. I was the first person to be hit, and i still have the scar on my forehead. And i was knocked down, my legs went out from under me. I thought i was going to die on this bridge. I said to myself, this is the last protest for me. Reporter what happened . Do you remember anything after that . I remember being back at the church. I dont even recall how i got back to the church. But apparently someone carried me back, and i guess i became conscious. Someone asked me to Say Something to the audience, and i said i dont understand it, how president johnson can send troops to vietnam and cannot send troops to selma, alabama. To the tech people who only desires to register to vote. Reporter and then in a matter of weeks, of course, he did send the troops, and you were able to make that march to selma. There is no cause for pride in what has happened in selma. Their cause must be our cause, too. Two weeks later, after president johnson delivered that speech, we did make the march all the way from selma to montgomery. It was a sea of humanity marching on this highway. Reporter you did have people protecting you then. All the way. All the way. People inspecting the bridges along the way, guarding the camps that night. It was our military. It was our military at its best. Reporter you know, congressman, a lot of people who were not there who didnt know how it was, they dont know how different it is now. Well, its a different world. Back in 1965 only 2. 1 of blacks of voting age are registered to vote in this county. You had to go to the county courthouse, the only place you could attempt to register on the first and third mondays of every month. Had to pass socalled literacy tests. Let people count the number of jelly beans in the jar. People stood in the lines. Reporter things are better but not as good as they ought to be. Things are much better, but were not there yet. We still have problems. Well make it. We will get there. Sell blah w selma was a turning point. Remarkable, the interview from years ago. Amazing to think it was on that bridge, but hes been a bridge in civil rights through generations and so important to so many. And many have talked for so long now about that bridge being renamed, michelle, as you know from the Edmund Pettus bridge to the john lewis bridge. Well see if and how quickly that happens. I know. Its amazing to think. In alabama, i spent so many years down in alabama. My aunt and her family are down there. In fact, that march to montgomery, many people slept on my familys land. So it is incredible to see if we do in the next few weeks, that bridge being named after him. And later on, well find out what congressman john lewis would have told that young man marching in selma. Well revisit his note to self done for cbs this morning a few years back. First, heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Joining us to discuss some of the latest covid19 developments is dr. Tom frieden, former head of the cdc and current president and ceo of resolve to save lives, an initiative of vital strategies. Dr. Frieden, good morning. Good morning. Let me start with the news this week, the white house announced that it was having hospitals no longer report covid information to the cdc, instead bypassing them and going directly to the department of health and human services. Where is that alarm why is that alarming to you . Well, i think we have to see how that plays out in the coming days and weeks. Theyre changing horses in midstream. And they say its going to be better. Lets hold them to that and see if we have realtime information thats more accurate than weve been getting so far. More importantly here, we have one enemy the enemy is the virus. The more wore divided, the more the virus can conquer. Were seeing the u. S. As a laggard. Were seeing deaths every 15 minutes, we have five deaths in the u. S. , we have over 1,000 infections every 15 minutes. Were a global outlier. Weve got one of the highest deaths rates in the world, and its increasing. But its never too late to improve the response and do better. Dr. Frieden, you and three other former heads of the cdc authored an oped in the Washington Post this week. I want to read a little of what you referenced. You wrote, the sound science is being challenged with partisan pot shots. So in confusion and mistrust at a time when the American People need leadership, expertise, and clarity. What is the message that you want Going Forward toward lawmakers and politicians right now . We need consistent messaging. We need to follow the science. Follow the three ws wear mask correctly, wash your hands, watch your distance. We need consistent messaging masks are importance, Contact Tracing is important, testing is important, staying home is important. But no one thing is going to control this virus. We need a sciencedriven truth in sentencingive card natal attack on the virus. Thats the way our kids will be able to go to school, we can go back to work, the economy can recover, and we can save tens of thousands was lives. Right now the estimates are that we will have over 200,000 deaths in this country within the next couple of months. This doesnt have to be. It is not too late to do a lot better than were doing now. We need to get on the same page, track whats really important, and Work Together while we stay physically apart. Quickly before you go, you mentioned our children going back to school. The cdc is going to have new guidelines out. What are some of the thanings tt we need to get our kids back in the classroom safely . First and foremost, whats going to facilitate kids getting back to school is less covid in the communities. Where covid is exploding in the community, its going to be difficult if not impossible not just to open schools but more importantly to keep them open. If we rush in too fast as states in the south of the u. S. Did about reopening, youd have to step back. We want schools to open and stay open as safely as possible. That means driving the levels down in our communities with mask wearing, distancing, hand washing, bars need to be closed anywhere that theres lots of spread of covid, and Indoor Dining needs to stop. Theres lots of things that we can do and schools can prepare, as well. I was going to say the same messaging that weve been hearing. Dr. Tom frieden, thank you. I think i called you freedman earlier. We appreciate the time. The person who knew john lewis better than anyone that is john lewis himself. Well revisit his note to self to hear what the congressman would have told a young student of civil rights. Youre watching cbs this Morning Saturday. What happened daddy . Well, see this handsome man, his name was william. And william fell in love with rose and they had a kid. His name was charles and charles met martha. Isnt she pretty . Yeah. He shared a moment in note to self. Young john lewis, youre so full of passion. In your lifetime, you will be arrested 45 times on your mission to help redeem the soul of america. In 1956 when you were only 16 years old, you and some of your brothers and sisters and First Cousins went down to the Public Library trying to get library cards, trying to check out some books. And you were told by the librarian that the library is for whites only, not for color coloreds. I said to you now, when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to continue to speak up, to speak out. I could no longer be satisfied or go along with an evil system. You game so inspired became so inspired by dr. King and rosa parks that you got involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Something touched you and suggested that you write a letter to dr. King. You didnt tell your teachers. You didnt tell your mother and your father. Dr. King wrote you back and invited you to come to montgomery. In the meantime, you have been admitted to law school in nashville, tennessee. It was there that you got involved in a sitin. Youll be sitting in an orderly, peaceful, nonviolent fashion, and someone will come up and spit on you or put something down your back, hot water, hot coffee, pour how chocolate on you. You got arrested the first time, and you felt so free. You felt liberated. You felt like you had crossed over. Free at last. Free at last. Thank god almighty, we are free at last you probably would never believe it, but the boy from troy as dr. King use today to call you, we would be the embodiment of nonviolence in america. We must wake up, america, wake up, or we cannot stop and we will not two years after you spoke at the march on washington, you will see the face of death leading the march for voting across the Edmund Pettus bridge in selma. Im marching from selma to montgomery. We are marching to our State Capitol to dramatize to our nation and to the world our determination to win citizenship. It was here that the group [ cheers ] you were a beacon on that bridge. You were left bloody, we thought you were going to die, but you would make it. You would live to see your mother and father cast their first votes. The climate chanhange we nee come from washington, the change comes to washington. [ cheers ] youll also live to see the segregated nation you live in, an africanamerican president and his family to the white house, and guess what guess when young john by some Divine Providence has lived to send a message down through the ages. That man will be nominated on the 45th anniversary of the march on washington. All of those signs that you saw as a little child that said white men, colored men, white women, colored women, those signs are gone. And the only places you will see those signs today will be in a bo book, in a museum, on video. John, thank you for going to the library with your brothers, your sisters and cousin. You were denied a library card, you were sad. One day youve been elected to the congress, you wrote a book called walking with the wind, and the same library invited you to come back for a book signing where blacks and white citizens showed up. And after the book signing, they gave you a library card. And believe as dr. King and a. Phillip randolph and others taught you that were one people, and it doesnt matter whether were black, white, latino, asian american, native american, that our foremothers and forefathers came here on different ships, but were all in the same boat now. John, you understand the words of dr. King when you said we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters. If not, we will pass as fools. So well done back in 2017. Could watch that today. As you know, until he died last late last night, john lewis was the last surviving member to speak at the march on washington. So persistent that man was. So determined to get that museum on the mall built, the smithsonian museum, National Museum of africanamerican history and culture. And i have to share one moment from the 50th anniversary celebration of the march on washington. This man was so humble, he was walking back from the march all by himself. I happened upon him with my family on our way to the car. I said, congressman, where are you going . Shed, im walking back to ply car on capitol hill. I was like, do you want a ride . Hes like, sure. Video of the impromptu performance was a hit on line. Store owner mark waters got an idea i said, give him the piano. Bring the kid in. Well be more than happy to bring it to him. We cant find him. Cant find him. Nobody knows who this young man was. Reporter they managed to track down john capron, a College Student in boston, through social media. Didnt make sense. I looked it up, and then i saw he had posted on twitter. And i was like, all right, i have to respond to that to make sure im not in trouble. Reporter quite the opposite. Waters wanted to give capron the 200 piano for free. Then he upped his offer its a nicer name. Called it a steinway. You ever heard of steinway . Do you not own a steinway . Youre going to own a steinway. Are you serious . Reporter that piano is valued at 3,000. Waters was as happy to give the gift as capron was to receive it. Im a giver you could say. I love to give. Im Dana Jacobson with jeff glor and Michelle Miller. Coming up this hour, as the sports world waits for a decision on the new name for washingtons nfl frarnchise, were going to speak to a man who helps navigate the process. Hear how its gone and the pitfalls they need to try to avoid. Then for more than 30 years, it was one of americas favorite rides. The ford bronco had a storied and, in one case, infamous place in automotive history. Well have the inside story of how a group of ford workers brought the legendary suv back to life. And well take you to the berkshire mountains for a look at the vast array of farms that dot the region. Now the subject of a new book on farmtotable cooking. That is ahead. We begin with more of our remembrance of a civil rights icon. Tributes are pouring in for democratic congressman john lewis of georgia. The son of a sharecropper who would help lead this countrys march to voter and racial equality. He lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on friday. Lewis grew up in the segregated south and inspired by the words of dr. Martin luther king jr. Was drawn to the civil heights movement. He helped oregon nigeria the march on washington in 19 organize the march on washington in 1963. He was brutally attacked by state troopers two years later when leading marchers in a vogting rights movement. More on lewis extraordinary life now from nikole killion. Reporter lewis was the youngest leader of the Civil Rights Movement and its enduring storyteller. He helped organize the march on washington in august, 1963. We do not want our free gradually. We want to be free now. Reporter two years later, lewis led a march from selma to montgomery, alabama. We are marching to our State Capitol to dramatize our determination to win firstclass citizenship. Reporter that ended abruptly at the foot of the Edmund Pettus bridge. Over the course of his life, lewis was arrested more than 45 times, all follow what he called good trouble. Elected to congress from an atlanta district in 1986, he pushed for civil rights, gay rights, and boycotted two republican president ial inaugurations. He remained a living reminder of the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. When people tell me nothing will change, i just feel like saying, come and walk in my shoes. I will take you to those places. Reporter john lewis was 80 years old. President trump did not immediately comment on the death of congressman lewis. But there has been an outpouring of con dolentses in and around washington from former president bill clinton who called lewis a giant, to congressional leaders like House Speaker nancy pelosi who said he was an american hero. You may recall a few weeks ago, d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser gave him a tour of black lives matter plaza outside of the white house here. She praised him as the conscience. Our nation. Michelle . And pictures taken there that will be ones to watch. Thank you so much. For more on john lewis, were joined now by the chairwoman of the congressional black caucus, congresswoman karen bass of california. Congresswoman, good morning. Good morning. John lewis passing mark the end of the era, the last of the big six leaders who planned the march on washington. He wasnt just a civil rights icon but a multigenerational leader and legend. How do you begin to describe his legacy . Well, i will tell you that i have had the honor for last ten years of serving with him. And coming in the congress and being able to sit in a room with a giant like mr. Lewis and just in my time alone, i watched him, one, make sure that we have a museum, the africanamerican history museum. I watched him build a monument to the enslaved americans that built the capitol. He had so much influence and was responsible for so much include change in our country that his memory will live on. But you know what, on the day of his passing, we need to all recommit to make sure that we continue to get in good trouble, that we continue to speak out, speak up, and make sure especially today when so much change is happening, its really our responsibility to carry his legacy on. Now what i wonder what he personally taught you about how to effect change in washington. I think what he taught me more than anything was patience. His calm demeanor. The fact that everyone in the house, democrats, republicans, everyone respected him. I remember one time when one of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle absolutesed an amendment that was introduced an amendment that was going to cut funding around enforcement of Voting Rights. Mr. Lewis saw it on to have from his office,ry man do rhe ran to and gave an incredible speech. My colleague apologized in public and withdrew the amendment. That was the power that he had in the house of representatives. I had the honor of the 50th anniversary to walk across that bridge. I hope to be there again when that bridge is renamed for him. The nation is seeing what it looks like this morning without john lewis. Congressman, have you thought about what congress will look like without joh lewis . Well, you know what, were in session this week. It will be a sad week. Im sure that many of us will be on the floor paying tribute to mr. Lewis. That was one thing he used to always say to me, he tried to get me to call him john. And i told him, i said, no, mr. Lewis, im never calling you john. Youre mr. Lewis to me. Congresswoman, its Dana Jacobson now. We were talking with ambassador young earlier. He commented on that loving spirit that really dominated congressman lewis, despite all that he had been through. How did you see that spirit play out time and time again . I think we all did. No matter what was going on in the house, no matter how divisive it became, there was always mr. Lewis that would just have that moral authority that would allow us to rise up above our partisan differences. And i think thats part of his legacy. I think he taught us how you should go about creating change when you have differences. Certainly a message that a lot of people can look to now. Congresswoman karen bass, thank you very much. Absolutely. Thank you. This morning, a mural of john lewis in atlanta has become a gathering point for people who want to leave messages and candles. Last year we profiled that mural and other art that was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement around the city leading up to the super bowl. I got the chance to ask the congressman about it. We dont actually have that tape for you right now. Apologize. I do remember that moment, though, meeting him. And youll see it now. A piece of art such as a mural cannot only tell the story but can inspire others to learn, to find a way to make a contribution toward creating a better atlanta, a better georgia, and a better world. And i was saying i remember that moment meeting him. You meet so many people in your lives. He is such a dominant figure. It was really humbling. What was so beautiful about those murals and he pointed it out, this wasnt just about the Civil Rights Movement. It was about all others seeking equality and discrimination against any is discrimination against all. I love what the congresswoman said. You know, he said call me john. Shes like, im not calling you john. No. Im not calling you john, mr. Lewis. Michelle, you had to have those moments with him im sure. Oh, no. You know, i was a kid around him with the other adults. And i just remember him he was also a funny guy. And i remember laughter. And anyone who talks about him talks about there incredible sense of humor about this incredible sense of humor. He joins his wife lillian. And he adored her. Tough time for us all here as we will miss him. We will continue to remember him. It is about nine minutes after the hour. Heres a look at the weather for your weekend. We still dont know the new name, only that washington is getting rid of the old one. This week the Washington Post published a damning report on washington, d. C. s, nfl team in which 15 women made allegations of Sexual Harassment in a toxic workplace. It comes as the Team Following years of pressure announced it was going to end the use of the redskins name and native imagery. Now its a black slate with folks across the league wondering what comes next. You know, the indigenous american portrait next to reporter ed ohara remembers his role in rebranding the redskins of ohios Miami University more than 20 years ago. This was the redskins logo. We changed it to the red hawks. The colors didnt change. We kept the core font, and the attributes stayed the same fierce, determined, athletic. Reporter a few years earlier, his company, sme branding, had helped new yorks st. Johns University Transition from the redmen to the red storm. What was that process like . Changing st. Johns at a time before a lot of places were changing. Yeah. They were way ahead. It was difficult. That took every bit of two years. It was fan involvement. It was research. It was name generation. It was logos. It was coaches. It was one of the more divisive processes i went through. Theyre never easy, but theyre always right because they undid a you know, a pain officers that existing in their community. As chief osceola gets them started reporter over the next twoplus decades, pressure would build on other institutions appropriating native american imagery. Many would resist like the franchise in washington had until this week. Give me a sense, where does washington go now . Well, i think the first thing was they made the decision. So thats really great news. Where they need to go now is to consider a longer term strategy because theyre an 88yearold storied franchise with five super bowls, 32 hall of famers. They want to continue that history, so they have to be careful and be diligent and not only is this a name change, but its really a community kind of beacon of doing the right thing. Reporter eight years ago, ohara was hired to help the university of north dakota rebrand from the fighting sioux to the fighting hawks. Its a process that took three years. During that time, the schools teams were nameless. They were und hockey, und football, ung lacrosse. It was its not the best situation. Reporter the nfl season is scheduled to kick off in two months. But i think you have to be considerate of getting this right, taking your time. Its for the next 88 years, this decision. Reporter what is the hardest part of this process . Its the naming and trademarking. The logos are easy. Reporter why . Because the challenge is to a name, the opinions to a name. We have been in processes where there are thousands of names under consideration. And you just its a narrowing down process. Reporter do you have to think of things how does it sound when fans are chanting it . Alliteration. The chant is important. You know, weve eliminated names just on the chant. It just doesnt work. And i think the biggest one of all is trademark. You know, ive seen things killed at the end. Ive seen oppositions that you wouldnt believe. Reporter typically a team would run proposals through major stakeholders. From the league to sponsors and season Ticket Holders. Theyll test how a logo looks from inside the stadium on as Home Television and, nowadays, on a smartphone. It feels daunting, all the steps you have to go through. If you do it right, yeah. Reporter everyone seems to have an opinion and some graphic designers are sharing their mockups on line. Ideas include the washington red tails, a nod to the tuskegee airmen, the rivals and red wolves, a native american spirit animal. What most have in common the burgundy and gold. I wouldnt touch the colors. They are gorgeous. They are unique. And i think fans will want some of the history to remain intact. Reporter colors are key, says former raiders ceo amy trask. She once proposed a modest and temporary uniform change for the silver and black to team owner al davis. How about for one game a year we change the color of the pants and match it to the jersey . And you really would have thought i said to him, well, what if instead of asking the sunday to rise in the east i suggest it rise in the west . He loved the passion our fans had for the logo and the helmet and the raider brand. It was a fumble reporter now a cbs sports analyst, trask says while there are challenges, washington has an opportunity and should enlist young fans in the rebranding process. There are kids now who are going to be your season Ticket Holders and fans in decades to come. Excite them now. Reporter as for washingtons new logo, ed ohara says it can be a sign of the teams values, adding that in recent years logos have become more iconic in design. You dont have to tell the whole story with the logo. It has to be clean, simple, bold. You have to be able to have it transcend the Marketing Mix in your fan base. Reporter ohara believes that washingtons decision is an american moment. After all, we are a country founded in protest. Its very ironic that its the original americans that were changing a name that offended them in the countrys capital. It feels like hell now for the redskins franchise probably, but theyre doing the right thing. And over time, i think everybody will realize that and accept the change that theyre going to make. One interesting thing about the colors theyre saying keep them the burgundy and gold. There is a Large Coalition that would like them changed because they say then it makes it too easy for people to continue using that old gear that has the moniker on it. The counterargument being that you want to own those colors, though part of your history. Helps pass it on and move forward with the new name. It seems like the betting favorite is red wolves right now. Exactly. Over to you. All right. I lived in d. C. For four years. Ill at least at that. Ford has a better idea. And i did the photography of the book, as well. Reporter youve been on the ground and in the ground. On the ground, in the ground, its been a labor of love for us.
