Social distancing measures and lockdown procedures are being put to the test this morning as the country endures a major surge of coronavirus cases. In hardhit florida, disney world is going against the grain by reopening two of its orlandoarea parks today. On friday, bars in seven nevada counties were ordered to close again in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. Also on friday, another singleday record was broken with more than 66,000 new cases of the virus reported. It brings the total to more than 3. 1 million infections and more than 134,000 deaths. Michael george is in garden city, new york, at a mall that got the okay to reopen. Good morning. Reporter dana, good morning. Just yesterday this maam reopened to the public here on this mall reopened to the public here on long island. Bars, restaurants, and the young made their way into the cross hairs of governors of Southern States where the virus is Infectious Disease dr. Manoj jain is on the task force that mandated the rule. At the end of april, the oneday record was a littleas a little according to johns mop kins university. Florida alone had 11,000 new cases friday. It was tough to live through, and now to watch others go through it, equally as tough. Thank you, michael. Cbs news medical contributor dr. David agus is here with more on the worsening pandemic. Good morning. Were less than 60 days away from when most schools would traditionally open, and its becoming a contentious issue from a medical perspective. What needs to be the main consideration in deciding how schools will operate . There are a lot of variables. Number one, by far and away, is how many cases inn iyour area. If youre in an area with dramatically increasing cases, it is difficult to consider opening schools. You need to get the schools ready. You need to be able to social distance. You need normalize wearing a mask. I cant say that enough. Kids will have to wear a mask in school. You may have to change some of your class time so that you can have fewer kids in the class to social distance. But it takes resources, and we have to work on it now in preparation for september. We saw a lot of surge this week in the case numbers. Then the death rate also was lower, it werenasnt surging att level. Dr. Fauci said not too make too much of it, that its a false narrative to make too much of that. How do we put this into perspective . This is a really important point. I think one thats normally misunderstood. First of all, there is a delay from when you get sick to when you die. Then that could be up to a fourweek delay from when you die to the death certificate being registered at the federal and state level. Thats a big delay. Number two is were Getting Better at treating cases. So the hospitalization rate is going down. Number of people who get off a ventilator is much, much higher. The people who are younger get it, and were testing more. Thats four things are the reason for the change in the death rate. Weve seen a number of states that experienced surges, either pause reopenings or, in some cases, take a step back. Realizing its one nation with sort of 50 different policies now. How should states handle their reopenings moving forward . Thats whats difficult. No matter where you are different places have different policies. And so the key is behavior. If people are wearing a mask and social distancing, cases will go down. If theyre not, they wont. And so sometimes you have to enact stricter rules in order to make that happen. Closing bars, closing places where people can get together, and where the virus can spread. And so mayors, governors, have to step up and be aggressive here. We have to normalize behavior in order that the virus doesnt spread. If we all wear a mask in three weeks, there would be no virus. Its amazing to hear that people still arent wearing a mask, but they are not. The World Health Organization issued a new report talking about how the virus is spreading. Where we learning more about the transmission beyond obviously the wearing of masks . So the majority of spread in this country is droplets, which masks block. There is a virus that can stay in the air. We dont know thats the cause of spread or significant spread at all. But it is something that has taken is taken under advisement. The w. H. O. Says now it definitely is we dont know its causing, but it will be studied. Thats a change in their policy. Its not a major cause of spread right now in the country. Okay, dr. David agus, thank you so much. Tropical storm fay is weakening, but it is still Strong Enough to bring heavy rain andossi fing trmade landfa atlantic city, new jersey, on friday, flooding streets and leaving several cars under water. Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli is tracking all of this this morning. Good morning to you. Good morning, everyone. Get ready to sweat through a relentless and historic heat wave. Over the next week or so we may break or tie 100 records. After that probably even more. Lets look at the maps and show what i mean. R i big monster m hot air in the atmosphere just baking the deep southwest. And because of that, were going to see temperatures up to 115 to 120 degrees during the day today. You can see on the map temperatures in places like phoenix and, say, needles in Southern California, in the deserts there, 115 to 120 today. Same thing tomorrow. Its not going to be just there. Its also going to spread to texas and oklahoma. Highs about 105 to 110. Not just today and tomorrow, straight through about tuesday and wednesday. Thats how hot its going to be. When you mix the humidity in across the southern Mississippi Valley and gulf coast, its going to feel like 110 to 115. And unfortunately its not going to stay put. Look at the jet stream. Its lifting northward. As it does so by the middle and end of next week, its going to push the heat into st. Louis, indianapolis, eventually it will get to chicago, eventually it gets to new york. And the bad news is i dont see any end in sight. It looks like a heat wave is going to grip a good portion of the nation for at least the next couple to few weeks. That map has me mesmerized, unbelievable. Thank you so much. A lot of pink. Thats for certain. Welcome back to cbs this Morning Saturday. We have an update this morning on a longtime cbs news investigation. It began more than two years ago when our team found vulnerable drug addicts were being paid to have experimental surgeries, and Insurance Companies were being billed millions in the process. This month an extensive list of charges was filed in a california court. One mother whose life was changed forever told us she believes justice may finally be served. Theres not a second of a day that goes by that i dont miss my boy. But its you just learn we werent given a choice, so we had to learn how to live with it. Reporter debbie berry spoke to us from her home in ashland, missouri. He loved football. Football was by far his favorite sport. Reporter two years after we spoke to her as part of our investigation, the District Attorney for orange county, california, has88 felony charges alleging a fraudulent scheme. At least 35 patients involved in the scheme later died. Many by overdose. It was four years ago when berry first got a text from her son that no mother wants to receive. He texted me and said that i have a drug problem, mom. Im in trouble. Desperate to help, berry got brennan into treatment in california. One day he called her from a Doctors Office to tell her he found something to help. He said, im going to get an implant put in. Im here with them, and theyve done a precertification that the insurance your insurance will pay for. Reporter it was an implant thats a small pellet inserted near the abdomen. It releases medication to help curb cravings and block receptors. If brennan used heroin, he conceivably wouldnt be able to feel the effects. He was so adamant about how much it would help him. Reporter did you know he was getting paid for it . I absolutely did not know he was getting paid. Reporter our investigation found vulnerable addicts like brennan were being paid hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars in cash to get this 30minute outpatient procedure. You dont give a drug addict cash money. Reporter industry insiders told us doctors made up to 30,000 in insurance money for each simple surgery. And the money was so good, some doctors hired marketers, and some of those marketers hired recruiters who lured vulnerable patients with cash. As part of our investigation we spoke undercover with the marketers and recruiters who pointed to a doctor in Beverly Hills named randy rosen. The same doctor who did Brennan Berrys implant. Excuse me reporter two years ago he declined our request for interview weve been wanting to talk about why patients are being told to get surgeries reporter and said nothing to our producer outside his office. I found him. He was gone when i got here. Reporter after he died, debbiey berry learned her son was paid 1,000 to get the implant. She has been fighting to tell his story ever since. Im doing this for my son. I think he would be proud that im doing this. I hope that he would be proud that im doing this. But i dont want i dont want him to die in vain. We have a legitimate question, sir ve vt stement. Himco i td the i absolutely will do that. Reporter you think youll get that chance . I hope so. I hope so. I want to face him. I want to face him. And i want to tell him what hes taken from me. And what i have to live with every day for rest of my life. And what im living without for rest of my life. Dr. Rosen pleaded not guilty to all counts. Cbs news reached out to dr. Rosens attorney for comments multiple times. He has not responded to our request. We will continue to follow that case as it develops. And ava duvernay with the documentary 13th, all sharing the movies that still make them laugh, cries, and reflect on our current times. Nobody move i love the film because sidney handles issues in 1977 that were still dealing with now as it relates to class and economic disparities and desperation that people feel. I love it because its it talks about someone taking action to regain power. But one of the things i love so much about the film is its treatment of lgbtqia issues in 1977. The core of that movie is that, you know, the main character is robbing a bank to help pay for a reassignment surgery for his partner. Whats that . We went to bellevue where you told us. Said he was his wife. They were married in a church. Were dealing with trans issues in 1977. When you watch it, all the words are wrong, nothings preliminarily correct. But it was perfect for the time. I very recently for the first time watched the ghost and mrs. Muir. Its a spectacular movie. Its so romantic that the whole theme of like you meet your soulmate, but its somebody who was in a different time period. This was just a really, really beautiful movie. I mean, jean tyranny is gorgeous, and rex harrison is cool as this sea captain. And it just takes place on the english sea coast. Be careful. There may be breakers ahead. Theres a real escape that you get from watching a black and white movie. I would definitely put the ghost and mrs. Muire on your list. Youll be a puddle of love by the end of it. What did you do to my son . I am your son the modern classic, something that i recently revisited in quarantine was the movie big with tom hanks. Tom hanks plays a 12yearold, josh baskin, two finds himself in a grownup body. And its one of my favorite movies in when i was growing up. Like many people, im stiuck at home with family, looking for something to watch as a family. And it was a real hit. Go track down a little elaine may picture from the 80s, ladies and gentlemen. Name ish tar. Is this this is the oasis . Does this look like an oasis to you . Yeah. Look at the birds. Are thoseoffm and Warren Beatty in it and stuff. Was once roundly considered the least successful movie in hollywood history. They overspent and made no money, it flopped, dot, dot, dot. This movie is so worth catching. Its absolutely hysterical. Time cop sewell because it takes capsule because it takes place in the 80s. Man, a movie worth watching that like for a long time everyone crapped on. One of my favorite comedies is called car wash. It is directed by Michael Schultz. Because of his name, a lot of people dont know that Michael Schultz is a black man. He was a black director. He took car wash which on the surface is a comedy about an inner city car wash, and it debuted atca and won awa77 ereat bill duke and legend icon ivan dixon. And it is a schaap napshot of w people were at that time. Its cool and will funny, too. Favorite comfort film for me is eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Im sorry . I just said hi. Jim carrey after a breakup with Kate Winslets character tries to erase her from his memories. You know it doesnt shy away there like the big, bold, sad feelings of a breakup. As the movie goes on, theres such humor in it, and every time i watch it, it just swells my heart. The names bond. James bond. Its casino reporte c royale. The action is great, and the world is great. Theyre off in tuxedos, playing card games, people are drinking martinis and eating caviar. I think its the perfect escape. The actings amazing in it. The opening sequence is one of the greatest action sequences youll ever seen. And daniel craig is bond as far as im concerned. I pick a recent movie, man. And that would be either avengers infinity war or avengers end game. If i got nothing new to watch, i will make a meal and sit down and start watching end game all over again and stuff. So those marvel movies are my happy place. As my grandmother used to refer to the soap opera she would watch, those are my stories. Those marvel movies are my stories. Thats my comfort food. Those are the movies i go to to feel embraced and warm. When you was out there fighting, i was here holding that day and night. A great movie for the times that were in is a littleknown film in some circles. Its calmed ashes and embers. It is a film that traces the homecoming of a black vietnam veteran. It came out in the 80s. And its talking about the black soldiers who came back from vietnam. But it really is talking about the condition of black communities then and now. Disparity and resources and attention. The lack of accountability of police. In is a littleseen film. If you do watch the film, youre watching a rare jewel. Barbara cop koppels documen harlem county usa. With these coal miners and their families as they go through this strike. [ cheers ] and theyre striking for living wages and better working conditions. And i think rewatching it now was also really emotional because even though its like on such a smaller scale than, you know, the black lives Matter Movement thats happening right now. And its not just like theres this end and theres victory and we did it, but its this ongoing struggle. Another movie one could watch, a reflection of our times, and yet it was made 31 years ago. Spike lees do the right thing. Spike lees do the right thing. As plain as day. They didnt have to kill the boy. One of my favorite films about many things, a day in the hottest day in new york city. Took out all these tissues, but they did it in such an honest way where you were trying to see things from everybodys point of view. Kind of comes out with this strange understanding of each other at the end. Its a great one to watch. A movie that you could play today and would feel like it was made this year, as well. Just saw that actually. Its such a great movie. Its amazing how so many issues dont change, but if you make the movie the right way in that honest, fair way, that its timeless. Right. You can pick it up any time. What do you think . Theres so much i went from highs to lows there. Im sorry. Kind of im speechless. I heard you were dancing in the background during car wash. Theres the music well be right back. For those of you without local news, cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. For now, im ian lee with a look beyond this mornings headlines.
