In washington, the Trump Administration is insisting schools fully reopen in the fall, even though many have not met cdc safety guidelines. At a Task Force Briefing wednesday, dr. Deborah birx asked the americans in those red zones to do this. Not only use the face coverings, not going to bars, not going to Indoor Dining but really not gathering in homes either and decreasing those gatherings back down to our phase one recommendation which was ten or less. Reporter in texas, another red zone, state officials ordered the immediate evacuation of more than 60 residents at the lake worth nursing home near dallas. 25 residents there tested positive for the virus. Arizona is another red zone. There are less than 150 icu beds available statewide. Phoenix Fire Department captain rob mccabe said covid calls are off the charts in some parts of the city. And at close to 100 firefighters have likely been infected. It was humbling to our department to see so many of our members get it so quickly. Any and all situations that are dangerous, this is different. Reporter that risk of infection is the same reason sheriff chitwood here in volusia county, florida, north of orlando, says its unconscionable that his local Health Department stop giving him addresses in the county where infected cases are. What hed do is tell his Police Officers, hey, before you get to 123 main street for the 911 call, know theres an infected person there and you should dress accord league. We called the Health Department to say, why did you stop sending them the information . They told us its a statewide directive. Vlad. We want the schools to be open and going in the fall. Reporter the president tweeted wednesday that he disagrees with his own cdcs very tough and expensive guidelines for opening schools. The current guidelines encourage the use of cloth face coverings, social distancing, staggered scheduling and no communal space. So were putting into place other ways to get testing results from them. Reporter President Trump ignored questions from cbs news about the lack of data. How can you say its safe to send them back to school . Im not sending kids and our Education Workforce into our schools unless its safe. Its that simple. Reporter and notably absent from wednesdays Task Force Briefing was dr. Anthony fauci who earlier this week contra dicted President Trump on the severity of the pandemic. Does the president still have confidence in dr. Fauci . Its up to him to determine what to do with that information. Reporter until now, the administration has largely deferred to local leaders on how to reopen communities, but when it comes to schools, a white house adviser said the president is especially interested in getting kids back to class because it means getting parents back to work which could prompt an economic resurgence ahead of the november election. Even as his top experts cant really say its safe. Tony . Parents want school but not at the cost of their childrens safety. Thank you. George floyd told Police Officers he could not breathe more than 20 times before he died. Thats according to new evidence from one of the fired officers accused in floyds killing. Thomas lanes lawyer gave a judge transcripts recorded by lanes body cam. They show that Derek Chauvin who held his knee on floyds neck for nearly nine minutes, 8 46 exactly, told him, stop yelling. It takes a heck of a lot of oxygen to talk. When lane asked if floyd should be turned onto his side, chauvin said, no, hes staying put where we got him. And lane said floyd might be in disstrerks chauvin said, well, thats why weve got an ambulance coming. Lanes attorney argues there is evidence of his clients innocence and he believes charges of aiding and abetting should be dismissed. Prosecutors have until august 10th to respond. Its tough to hear this transcript because it seems the audio matches the callousness of what we saw in the video. Heartbreaking when you see the details up close like that. Shifting gears back to a 15yearold boy in california who is telling us how his father was shot and killed in front of him on a fourth of july trip. Ari and Jack Gershman asked a man for directions around two hours north of sacramento and then with no warning, the man opened fire and ari was hit. That was just the beginning of jacks ordeal. In an interview youll only see on cbs this morning, jack and his mother tell us their familys new reality still hasnt sunk in. Anna werner has this story. I said, wheres dad . He said, hes been shot. And i said, what do you even mean . Reporter when Paige Gershman received Text Messages from her son jack on friday, she thought he was sending her videos of scenery from a trip with his dad. In californias Tahoe National forest. But the teen was reaching out with a far more harrowing message. Jack said his father, dr. A ari gershman had been shot and killed by a gunman. My dad suggested that we ask him for directions. The shooter pulls out a pistol and starts shooting. And after two or three shots, he was hit. Reporter the 15yearold bolted from the car and took off into the surrounding woods near the poker flat area of Sierra County. Jack says he got lost and when he was finally able to call his mom, he barely had reception and his phone was running out of battery. When my phone died, i had nothing to do so i prayed. Reporter local Authorities Say it was more than 30 hours until they were able to locate jack and reunite him with his family. We all just screamed and hugged and cried. But then it was that relief and we knee thw that he was okat then the reality that ari was not. Law enforcement detained the suspected gunman, 40yearold john thomas conway. The Sierra County Sheriffs Office says hes suspected of shooting and wounding two other people in a separate attack. The motive for both shootings is unknown. Anna, thank u. Time to check your local weather. This is a krscbs news speci route. Im Tony Dokoupil in new york. The Supreme Court made a addition decision on President Trumps financial records. Came out moments ago. Jan, good morning to you. The president has resisted a longstanding tradition of releasing his tax returns to the public. Is todays decision going to change that . Reporter not necessarily, tony, but this is a major defeat for President Trump. He was trying to block the Manhattan District Attorney from getting his tax returns, substantially other financial documents. The District Attorney vance was investigating potential hush money payments that the Trump Campaign made to women including stormy daniels. The president argued in the courts broadbased constitutional issues president s were absolutely immune from any criminal prosecution while in office. The Supreme Court today rejected that argument, rejected his broadbased arguments with a vote of 72. The decision was written by the chief Justice John Roberts joined in the judgment by the president s two appointees, justices neil gorsuch and kavanaugh, and thomas and alito file add dissent saying it would harm the presidency allowing state grand jury and there are 2,300 local District Attorneys to contact political dragnets on a president. But the ruling today means that President Trumps broad arguments are rejected. He can now go back to the court and make specific arguments about why the subpoena to his Accounting Firm would be onerous, impede his presidency duties. A difficult argument to make. This grand jury may well get these reports. Waiting on opinions in the next case, the house committees that are also seeking his financial documents. Those, that decision is out now. Im going to look at it. Jan, well come back to you in a moment while you digest that decision as released. Right now go to paula reid at the white house following with us. Paula, the president over time offered a variety of explanations why he wants to keep his tax returns under cover including under audit, said flatly, none of your business. Whats he saying today . Nothing so far, but he has been on twitter generally tweeting about president ial harassment, prosecutorial miscontact and not going to be happy about this loss, because the tweets hes already sent out today really mirror the arguments his personal attorneys made to defend him in this case, arguing the reason state prosecutors should not be able to subpoena the president s records, because it would open them up potentially to political harassment. This ruling today, this is as jan noted a loss for the president. Hes unlikely to be happy. Ive reached out to the president s personal attorneys who represented him in this case, and we are, of course, waiting comment from the white house, from the president , probably they are waiting on the second case that has to deal with requests from congress and the hope that perhaps the president will prevail there, and they can maybe, in some ways try to frame this as not a complete loss. Paula, the cbs news polling shows a film majority of americans would like to look at President Trumps tax returns but a major prsplit. 81 republicans are not interest in sees President Trumps tax returns. 84 of democrats believe he should release his tax returns. Remind us how we got to this moment, this intent partisan split and now as we await a second Supreme Court decision a big day at the high court . Reporter the president has gone to great lengthing to conceal his tax returns and financial records really since 2015. Now with the first ruling there is a chance that voters could get to see some of that information. And the president does have some avenues to try to continue to block these records from being released. Very important, tony. If if it turns out he loses both of these cases, its not the president that turns over these records. Its his accountants and bankers. They have said, whatever the courts rule they will comply with this. Why the second decision is so key. Today the reason this is really the biggest question for the court this season is that they are looking at whether congress or state prosecutors can request these documents from a sitting president. Now, the president s lawyers argued that congress, which says its looking into whether the president tried to conceal hush money payments, he paid to women he had affairs with before going into office, whether they actually had a legitimate reason for doing so. His lawyers said they did not. They should not be able to get this information. The legal question of the subpoenas. The political question goes back to Richard Nixon who released his returns saying that the American Public has a right to know if their president pays a fair share as well as the famous phrase, whether or not their president is a crook. Paula, thank you. Back to jan looking at the second decision today. Two highly anticipated rulings. Good morning again to you. What do the justices say about the second case involving congress . Reporter backgrounds first. So its clear. First case was about whether or not a state grand jury could get some of trumps financial documents and tax returns. This case is the much broader and in many ways more significant case over whether three congressional committees that are doing wide investigations into the president , his businesses, trump affiliated industries, whether they can not only get his tax returns but financial documents going back more than a decade. I mean, this was a wideranging request for information. Today the Supreme Court by the same lineup of justices, 72 written by chief Justice John Roberts joined by liberals and president s two new appointees ruled those cannot be enforced. In ways this in some way is a partial win for President Trump. Now theyre sending this back to congress and the lower courts to show that there was a heightened need for this information. The court in this ruling is saying that because they are seeking so much information against a sitting president , that congress, when it wants that kind of information harks to show a heightened need for it. Serious separation of powers concerns at issue, what was congress legitimate legislative purpose in seeking this information . And i have to say, tony. None of this is surprising. Listen to the arguments. Liberal justices were very concerned about this as well and you see them joining the chief justice opinion today, Justice Breyer said in the argument, i have to be concerned we have a senator mccarthy doing an investigation of a future Franklin Roosevelt or harry truman. The courts ruling, of course, would apply to the next president. Whether President Trump or its going to be president biden. All justices were very concerned about a wide separation of powers issue and congress would be able to do a political dragnet on a sitting president. This will now go back. Congress will have to do more to show it needs these documents and why it needs them. The specific legislative need for them. Why its important that they know this while theyre passing laws. So that, today, is a win for trump. Its going to delay it. Finally, i have to say this. This is a win for the Supreme Court. The justices did not want the court to be injected into the election. The fact that seven justices have joined now to make these rulings, liberals, conservatives, trump appointees, this case today, this one, anyway, may be a win for the, for trump, the first is a loss, but overall, its a win for the Supreme Court they were able to come together and release this kind of decision. Very important to note, jan. In the first case the president s lawyers did not prevail the president is immune from a state criminal case, providing evidence there. On the second case, congress is going to have to do a better job if it wants these records in the nearterm. Do you have a sense what the timetable will be for when these cases go back to a lower court . When there could be another Decision Point . Reporter it could happen quickly. You can imagine House Democrats will be motivated to make it happen very quickly. They can file emergency requests that this has to be done now. Immediately. But i think thats going to be very difficult for us to get a final decision. Certainly in the congressional cases before november. Of course, they can continue their investigations after the president is either out of office or reelected. The question is, are voters going to know this information before the election . A difficult stretch. Also, remember, just because congress and the grand jury was getting this information, if they were going to, anyway, didnt mean it would become public. Grand jury are supposed to be confidents. Thats not supposed to leak. Well wait and see on the time frame but its not looking likely were going to see this anytime soon. Yeah. A very important point. And quick from a legal perspective not necessarily quick from the general publics perspective. An election in another 117 days by my count. Jan, thank you very much. Moments later, staffer Michael Mosely tackled fredericks to the ground. Two other men soon joined him to restrain the teen. For about 12 minutes, fredericks is pinned to the ground. At least four more men came over and appeared to hold down fredericks arms and legs, and sit on his chest and abdomen. Toward the end of the video, you can see fredericks go limp. Reporter staffers Michael Moseley, Zachary Solis, and nursing director Heather Mclogan were all fired from Lakeside Academy and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and seconddegree child abuse. It is not a complete video of everything that occurred. Reporter attorney tase markou reports Heather Mclogan who was also charged for not providing timely aid. He says anyone could have given fredericks cpr that day. When you look at all the evidence, and im confident when all the evidence comes in she will be vindicated. Reporter in a statement to cbs this morning, an attorney for Michael Moseley said, mr. Moseley was following protocol at all times. The reason for the initiation of the restraint was due to fredericks threats to children of eminent physical violence. Speaking for the first time about the incident, Zachary Solis says he helped restrain fredericks and was following his training. What specifically are you taught to do in terms of where you grograb someone or how you hold them during this restraint . It starts off at the arms, and then if it goes down to the ground, we were told by everybody that it was a good restrai restraint. Reporter when youre restraining someone like that, are you waiting to hear from the person youre restraining that they give up . That is one of the factors or the student says hes done. Reporter the attorney don sappanos represents solis. I think the facility itself is running for the hills and hiding behind these young people that were called upon to do their job. Theyre not theyre not medical personnel. Reporter when you learned that he passed away, what was your reaction . I felt bad for corn neilus. Reporter Cornelius Fredericks had been a ward of the state for several years. His mother died years before, and his father lost custody of his son when he went to prison. Fredericks leaves behind four siblings. This institutional violence goes on far too often, and the children are powerless and voiceless. And no ones out on the street protesting Cornelius Fredericks brutal and ruthless killing. Reporter Lakeside Academy has since been shut down and its license revoked. Its residents were moved to another location. Now in a statement to cbs news, sequel youth and Family Services tells us that they operated at sequel, they said they emphasized deescalation both with our staff and our students. Here are a few stories we think youll be talking about today the Washington Redskins are still thinking about changing the team name, but they are giving up on all the native american imagery. Espn reports the team logo will get a makeover, though its team colors ofbu burgundy and gold wl stay the same as of now. The team faces renewed pressure from activists who say its longstanding nickname is racist. Bigname retailers like amazon, target, and nike have removed Washington Redskins merchandise from their websites. I think people still want to see the name change. It may be a good first step. Yeah. Got to change the name. There is an incredible development. The conversation around the redskins has been going on for years. I remember it back in the earliy 2000s when i was going to school in d. C. The fact that theres movement now really the question of why is now different. This is evidence of a real, actual change, gayle. Uhhuh. I totally agree with that. I went to university of maryland. They were talking about it back then. I know this has been a longtime conversation. I agree, i think change is in the air. Youve got news in the music world i hear. I do. The band formerly known as Lady Antebellum is suing for the right to call its lady a. A seattlebased blues singer has used the same nickname for more than two decades. The trio claims it reluctantly filed a trademark lawsuit after anita white apparently demanded a 10 million payment for the rights to the lady a name. The band argues it trademarked lady a in 2011 with no opposition, and its fans have used the abbreviation since around 2006. Singer told us last month she was hopeful that both sides could come to an agreement. Were going to continue talking, and were going to come to a a resolution thats best for both of us. As i said, im keeping my name. And and this is going to be a great outcome for everybody is my hope, is my prayer. Should point out that the band is not asking for any money damages. We asked white to comment on the lawsuit. She has not responded. This is a tough one, gayle. She has been using that name for such a long time. Lady antebellum changed the name in recognition of the moment that were living in right now, but the idea that they might be suing to use the name, a black woman, is tough to digest. Yeah. But i mean, fans of Lady Antebellum and i consider myself one have been calling them lady a for a long time. Seems like they were trying to work it out and now a 10 million lawsuit. I dont know. Is it so tough . She says that she says Lady Antebellum made it clear, listen, were very sorry, you know, they dont want to cause any trouble here. Seems like theres a way the two sides can work it out that doesnt involve 10 million. Yeah. All im saying. And lady a, the band, is not suing this lawsuit is not seeking any monetary damages. Exactly. Thats important to point out. No. No. They really all just want to get along. There was a poignant moment in sports . Nearly 200 athletes staged a powerful protest just before Major League Soccer resumed its season last night. Members of the group black players for change held an eightminute 46second moment of silence to protest Racial Injustice in the Police Killing of george floyd. One by one, each player wearing black tshirts and face masks that read black lives matter raised a gloved fist in the air. Really poignant. Reminiscent of the olympics in 1968 strong statement there. The Trump Administration is insisting schools fully reopen in the fall even though have not met cdc safety guidelines. I love how whatever is in the refrigerator, it has to be really good, gayle. I hadnt thought about that. I was so busy looking at them. But youre right. Whats in the fridge . Were going to begin with this. There are more than 3 million cases of the coronavirus in the country. Despite the surge, the Trump Administration is pressuring schools to fully reopen this fall. Ultimately its not a matter of if schools should reopen. Its simply a matter of how. They must fully open, and they must be fully operational. The cdc is expected to issue new guidance next week on how schools should reopen. This comes after President Trump slammed the agency on twitter calling the current guidelines expensive and impractical. Mr. Trump also threatened to pull funding from schools that stay closed. We spoke to teachers who say theyre kconcerned about the effectiveness of Online Learning but also concerned about safety. I worry about teachers that are immunocompromised or live with somebody who is. I worry if we cant provide in Person Instruction that some of my students will be so incredibly behind. I think while considering things like social and emotional growth are incredibly important, my students cant learn if theyre sick, and i cant teach them if im dead. Important to keep in mind that ultimately its up to states to decide if schools should reopen, not President Trump. The secretary of education under george w. Bush is now the ceo of texas 2036. Thats a nonprofit focussed on longterm planning for the state. She joins us from north carolina. Thank you for joining us. We heard them say kids cant learn if theyre sick and i cant teach if im dead. Thats a good point. I dont know any parent who dont want their kids back in school in august or september. Based on what youre seeing an hearing and know, do you think its safe for us to start planning to send the kids back right now . It can be. If we do it right and we think about all the various contingencies that are likely to crop up and the complexities. If we communicate early and often with our parents about what those plans are. And if we are patient with each other about the need for calling audibles along the way, i think our kids can be back in school in some shape, form, or fashion. And those are going to be hybrids, sometimes in person, and sometimes remotely. The president calls the cdc guidelines tough and expense ive, but when it comes to childrens health, is there any such thing as too tough or expensive . There are so many unknowns as you know with this coronavirus. Well, this is all about risk management. And as has been said and i agree with completely, there are down sides to having our students out of school for so long. Learning loss is real for students of all kinds. The functioning of our economy and of families, the ability for parents to work, there are major down sides to not having our students actively engaged in their learns. Thats what we need to balance. The cares act have resources available. My own state of texas is using the resources to provide ppe and various other things, cleaning materials and supplies to schools so they can manage that risk as well as possible. And, of course, insisting on masks to the maximum extent. So its a balancing act. Will it be perfect . It will not. And parents will need to be active participants in the decisionmaking in this regard. But youve got the president who to most peoples knowledge, doesnt appear to have any medical training. And now hes slamming his own experts who have the medical training and are looking at the science. Does that concern you a little bit . You know, what im seeing is the educators, county judges and county health officials, governors are not looking to washington for guidance on this matter. They know that every Single Community is different. Their Health Issues are different. Every single persons, student and teacher, their issues are different. And so this is absolutely a locallydriven effort. Most of the money for our schools comes from state and local governments. The federal government is a minor investor. Certainly can use a bully pulpit to advance best practices and provide clearer communication. I think parents are looking to their local officials to understand the needs of that community and that balancing act and be a party to those decisions. So you are saying its best to leave it up to the state to make their own individual decisions the way its set up to do . Thats right. And theyre the people who are paying the bills. And so honestly, theres no way for the president to withhold fundings that has been appropriated for congress by particular things. Could they do it Going Forward in a new piece of legislation . Potentially. I was going to ask you about that. Yeah. So add that dimension to a really stressful situation thats extremely complex is just one more thing we shouldnt be worrying about right now. We need to have certainty as much as possible around funding, around Contingency Planning and around the health and safety and Educational Needs of our students and families. Right now the guidelines call for face coverings, social distancing, staggered sk scheduling, no communal space. If you were advising the president and schools, what do you think would be the best course of action, and parents concerned saying im not sending my kids back to school right now . Well, i think parents need options. I think ultimately these are parents decisions. If a parent elects not to send their child into a situation where yes, theres more social distancing, the school has done everything they can, provided masks, not have the cafeteria open, but if a parent is uncomfortable or the Family Member or the student has compromising conditions, then that parent ought to be able to make the call to keep their child at home, learning online, or in some sort of a hybrid. And im seeing incredible creativity around the country. As families and educators Work Together to meet those needs, but its not without risk. In either direction. I think parents are and will be an active part of the planning as we go forward. All right. Secretary, very good to see you this morning. May i say i love your glasses . I will be calling. Absolutely. Bye bye. Thank you. The pandemic has forced athletes to put their careers on hold. It was all i could do to not ask about the wonder years. For a black family in the 1960s, its not going to be so wonderful. Interesting show. The perspective will be fascinating. And Danica Mckeller said fred shared the news, i cant wait to see what he and lee daniels create. Really cool, gayle. Me, too. And fred savage was so cute as a little bit. Still cute. What are the skills that you think workers need to have in this new normal, and how is your Program Helping them get those skills . Well, first as your list of jobs just covered, you know, theres a lot of different jobs. They all involve different skills. But i think were seeing two other things that are really cutting across the board. One is more Digital Skills. As you mentioned, working from home or working in more remote ways is the new normal. And so i do think that there are Digital Skills that will be applicable to all of these jobs. The second thing that is just really important is that to get a new job, you may be interviewing remotely, you may be doing it in front of a laptop. And so one of the things that weve focused on that is very accessible to everyone is the tutorials on tips on how to interview on line. Theres even a way you can practice. We have an artificial intelligencebased feedback system. It will critique you. It will give you suggestion on how you can improve. Its really this combination of skills thats important. Part of the money is going to nonprofits that work in communities of color, part of the money that microsoft is committing to this effort. On that diversity question, id love to get your response to something weve talked about on that show. Thats the idea that diversity targets are so important that executive pay, your pay, for example, should be tied to reaching and meeting those goals. Would you agree with that kind of idea . I do. Actually my pay has been tied to reaching those kind of goals for many years. You know, so every year, we set goals to advance diversity, to have a more diverse work force, to promote inclusion. And every year were measured at the end, and obviously measured on other things, as well. But ive seen firsthand what a difference it has made at microsoft. It has made our entire company more diverse. We have a lot more work to do. The whole country has a lot more work to do. But its like anything else, you do what youre paid to do, and you do your best work when you can measure it. Yeah. Back to the training programs, traditionally speaking, governments are the ones that retrain workers in tough times and make sure that workers have the education they need compete. And there are programs out there from governments. How is this Microsoft Program different for people who are currently enrolled in something that their government is providing . Well, first of all, i think the work the Work Force Development boards at the state level and local communities do is really important. I think its helpful to call that out. What were doing is in part working with these work force boards. But were providing the kinds of tools i think are most in demand right now. Were doing it free of charge. Anybody can go to opportunity. Linkedin. Com, and were making it very easy to look at the kind of job that might be of interest to you. The kind of job that employers are hiring for, and then you can see quickly the kind of skills employers are looking for and start to learn, and then were also providing lowcost access to tests so you can certify that you have these skills. And we know these are the certifications that employers are looking for, as well. You mentioned that those federal and state job programs are so important. Microsoft has been criticized along with the whole Tech Industry for not paying its fair share in taxes in recent years, for putting profits offshore, where the taxes profits cant be touched. Would you commit to paying a higher Corporate Tax rate in the name of job training and education . Well, first, look, our Corporate Tax rate has been a heck of a lot higher than a lot of the other Tech Companies that people commonly respectfully, it was 8 in 2017. Yeah. And it was a good deal higher in 2019. But the real point is, yes, weve stepped forward, and we will continue to step forward. We advocated in Washington State where we have more employees than anywhere else last year for an increase in taxes on ourselves. We made a proposal to tax ourselves and amazon more than any other companies in the state. All of the money that was raised, more than 100 million, has gone to education, especially Community Colleges and higher education. So you know, if your fundamental question is do we want to see more done, the answer is yes. Are we prepared to pay our fair share, the answer is yes. And even when our fair share has been more than it was in the past, weve signed up for that, as well. And so that means a compliment to keeping corporate profits here in the u. S. Where they can be taxed . Corporate profits now are taxed in the u. S. I think in light of the tax changes made a couple of years ago. We now pay all american businesses now pay more taxes in the United States regardless of whether they bring those moneys back to the states. Yeah. I do know you did bring the money back, more than 100 billion. It was a tax savings of 25 billion. One wonders what that could have done. Thank you so much. Important lessons for workers looking to make a change. Appreciate you being on. Thank you. Ahead, one Remote Community isolated from the rest of the state. A Grocery Store owner in a remote Alaska Community went the extra mile to make sure his customers got the food and supplies they needed when the coronavirus left them stranded. Cbs this Morning Saturday cohost, thats dana jacobson, shows his remarkable story. Reporter in southeastern alaska, the town of gustavus, prides itself on its closeness to nature. Were a small community. Our economy pretty much revolves around the tourist industry. Were the gateway to Glacier Bay National park. Reporter there are no roads, its only accessible by charter plane or ship. As alaskans, were pretty resourceful. Were kind of used to this kind of thing. Were cut off by nature up here. Reporter alaskas staterun ferry is a critical service, providing transport and delivering supplies to this Remote Community. When a short shutdown for repairs was extended because of covid19, the town was left without options for months. Businesses like kelly mclaughlins gallery and coffee shop were struggling. We were wondering what are we going to do and how am i going to get things like thousand pounds of coffee beans and orders of milk out here. Theres flno way i could afford shipping everything on sea plans. Reporter tosh, as hes known by the locals,er uses the only Grocery Store, and had the only ship in town able to make supply runs. We bought there boat just on a g. M. Beamble. The gamble is what happens if the ferry quite. We would be cut off. Lets make the investment in this boat as an insurance policy. Reporter that gamble paid off. Keeping the town of 450 residents supplied with food by making weekly voyages to the state capital of juneau. The 60mile trek takes 14 hours by sea. A little more than what people are used to from their local grocer. You know, i wish we could just have a truck pull up to the back of our store and open up and theres all the groceries for the week. That would be slick. In rural alaska, its not the way it is. Reporter it feels like youre a lifeline for the people there right now. These are all neighbors, these are friends, people you care about. Were going to do whatever it takes. Reporter its not just groceries. Virtually everything coming into the town arrives aboard toshs ship. Were bringing all kind of stuff, lumber, if you need a new fridge, well try to find a fridge and get it brought in. Whatever people need. Everything from Building Supplies to food. Everything comes in roll on, roll off of the ferry. He had to replace that somehow. Reporter what has that meant to your town to have him taking care of everyone in that sort of way . If we didnt have any any way to get our groceries and supplies and whatever here, a lot of people would have to move away, go somewhere else. Reporter is this hitting you financially . Well, sure. I mean, theres no question that running the boat is exponentially more expensive than using the ferry. The gal that does our books has a conniption every day. Its not a good time to be raising prices of groceries, thats for sure. Weve been holding the prices, eating the difference. To have tosh get the boat and keep the prices the same and the service the same, it was huge. I wouldnt have been able to operate. Look out for your neighbor, thats the attitude we have. We care about each other, we take care of each other. Right now more than ever thats a message people need. Thats what i would say with that. Reporter for cbs this morning, im dana jacobson. Look out for your neighbor. You go, tosh. Happy to see that the ferry is back up and running. People in town told us they are grateful to tosh for helping more than six months while the ferry was shut down. Fritolay that makes the wonderful barbecue lay potato chips, they have a campaign that says joy givers, so when i think of joy givers, you think of people like tosh. Hes got a nice face, kind heart.
