Texas, florida, and arizona. Only on cbs news, a reporter on the front lines. Tonight with exclusive access inside one hospital in a race against time. Its not just going to be you, its going to be a whole family thats going to get sick. Odonnell heartburn drug danger . Could an overthecounter drug you take every day double your risk of getting coronavirus . The new study out, what you need to know. Trumps taxes, will the Supreme Court force the president to turn over his personal financial records to investigators . Plus the health scare for chief Justice John Roberts. And finally tonight, during a national crisis, how a 12year old with a trumpet is lifting spirits. This is the cbs evening news with norah odonnell, reporting from the nations capitol. Odonnell good evening to our viewers in the west. Thank you for joining us. We are going to begin tonight with another recordbreaking day in a nationwide crisis that only appears to be getting worse. A surge of new infections in florida, texas, arizona and california pushed the u. S. Past three million confirmed cases today, but didnt stop President Trump from ignoring the advice of his own health experts, threatening to pull federal funding from schools that dont fully reopen this fall. Just hours after the president slammed c. D. C. Guidelines for getting students back into schools as too tough, Vice President mike pence told reporters that guidance would be revised. Across the south tonight the focus isnt on schools, its on saving lives. In florida the death toll is rising and intensive care units are overflowing. In arizona people are now waiting up to 13 hours to be tested. Getting results could now take days due to backlogs. And in this covid war we are in mcallen, texas, where we were given exclusive access today, doctors there say they are being pushed to brink. As we come on the air we are also learning a nursing home near fort worth has been evacuated after a third of residents there have tested positive. There is a lot of reporting to get to tonight and our team of correspondents is covering it all. Cbss David Begnaud is going to lead off our coverage tonight in south florida. Good evening, david. Reporter good evening, norah. We are in broward county, and we just heard that here in the county they are increasing the county they are increasing their fines and penalties against t ople who are not following rules and regulations and are contributing to the spread of coronavirus. We are at Memorial Regional Hospital in hollywood. 30 yards away from where i am there is only what i can describe as a drive through covid receiving center. You pull up, a nurse greets you, brings you inside this tented area and immediately starts the triaging process. The numbers are going up significantly the past few weeks. Reporter dr. Randy katz says the Emergency Department here at Memorial Hospital in hollywood is the busiest its been since the covid outbreak began. There is no doubt that this virus is just as deadly now as it was three months ago and we are seeing more patients come into the hospital, more patients with infection, and more patient with complications from this virus. Reporter as numbers rise across the state, north of orlando in Volusia County sheriff Mike Chitwood said his local Health Department has stopped telling him how many people are infected in his county. Its unconscionable, because if you give the American People the information that they need, we can make informed decisions. Reporter meanwhile, hospitalizations and deaths in other hot spots continue to skyrocket. On tuesday, texas broke its single day record reporting just 1er 10,000 new cases. This is video from inside of a houston hospital where medical staff worked to save the life of a 66yearold covid patient. He caught the virus, one minute you are looking great, and the next minute you are gone. Reporter arizona has fewer than 150 i. C. U. Beds left in the betire state. In california at least 100 people have died from the virus for the third day in the past week. At todays White House Task force briefing, dr. Deborah birx made this plea. E use the face coverings, not going to bars, not going to indoor dining, but really not gathering in homes either. I feel threatened reporter the mandate to wear masks continues to outrage some people. This man was reportedly asked to people. This man was reportedly asked to put on a mask at a costco in fort myers, florida. He has since been fired from his job at an insurance agency. Meanwhile more cities and state officials are making face coverings mandatory, including in new jersey and atlanta. This kid woke up with a smile on his face. Reporter pastor david settles from tennessee knows first hand what it is like to lose someone to covid19, his 30yearold son darius died saturday, four days after he was diagnosed. He is urging people to wear masks. Somebody gave it to him. And i bet you if they had known i will give it to this young man and he will die, they would have done differently. Reporter one more piece of breaking news, this time out of tulsa, oklahoma. We have just heard from the Health Director in tulsa who says that President Trumps rally there and the protest that hppened around it last month likely contributed to 500 new Coronavirus Infections in that area. Norah . Odonnell David Begnaud, thank you. And today education secretary betsy devos insisted that schools must reopen in the fall and slammed the plans for a hybrid of alternating days in the classroom. But the decision on opening up is up to local officials. And many are following advice from medical experts. Cbss ben tracy reports tonight from the white house. Reporter President Trump tonight once again at odds with his own medical experts as he continues to relentlessly push americas schools to reopen. You want to learn in the classroom, so our schools, we want them open in the fall. Reporter hes also threatening to defund schools that dont open, though he has little power to do so, and criticizing the c. D. C. School safety guidelines, calling them very tough and expensive. We dont want the guidance from c. D. C. To be a reason why schools dont open. Reporter today, vice vesident mike pence said the c. D. C. Will issue new guidance next week because getting kids back to school is essential to parents going back to work and helping the economy. We just dont want the guidance to be too tough. Reporter but teachers groups say the federal government isnt providing adequate plans for testing or funding to reopen schools safely. So, its kind of unfair that were putting the Education System on the hook for bailing us out of this pandemic in terms of childcare and getting our economy moving again. Reporter in south florida, where infections are surging, the Miamidade County superintendent of schools said he will not follow a statewide order to resume inpersoncoitios have not improved. That is virtually impossible. It would be reckless. Reporter new york citys mayor announced today he will only partially reopen the nations Largest School district in september, with students coming to school in person one to three days per week, an k,erage class size dropping from 30 to between 912. I feel for parents who are juggling so much. Were going to have to figure out more in terms of childcare. Reporter tonight the ivy league has canceled all sports programs until january due to coronavirus concerns. Now, other Major College sports conferences are still hoping to play, it is just not clear how they will make that happen. Norah . Odonnell ben tracy, thank you. We want to go back now to texas where the governor previously warned that a 10 rate of positive tests would be a red flag for the state. Well, tonight weve learned that rate there is even higher. And that is being felt in the states hospitals. Cbss Mireya Villarreal gives us an exclusive look from the front lines. coughing reporter this is the sobering scene inside the covid i. C. U. At south Texas Health System hospital in mcallen. Almost every patient in here is on a ventilator and their chance of beating the virus is slim. Medical staff here are strained, etruggling to treat more than strained, struggling to 140 Covid Patients, the highest theyve had since the start of the pandemic. There are so many patients coming in right now that there pthem. T not enough beds for pretty much, yeah. Reporter dr. Osman khan works in the e. R. Knowing how quickly things have progressed here, are you worried . Yes, yes, im worried. I feel it is just the beginning for us, i feel like it is just getting a lot worse. Reporter while we were there dr. Khan was treating juana prieto who developed pneumonia on top of coronavirus. Prieto and her husband jesus were hospitalized after losing their 35yearold daughter jessica to covid last week. For those people that dont understand what this virus is, tell me, what has this done to your family . There are no words i can describe this, losing your kid, my only daughter. Reporter cases here in the Rio Grande Valley have increased by 70 over the last two weeks. And if you take a look behind me, you will see some white windows, those are rooms with Covid Patients inside that have been retrofitted with special air filters. Right now hospital administrators are telling me they are at critical capacity and they are begging for help before this gets out of hand. Norah . Odonnell all right, Mireya Villarreal who just a few hours ago with her crew took all that protective equipment off, thank enu for your reporting. Tonight arizona is down to the lowest number of available i. C. U. Beds since the crisis began. And in california, where infections are surging, medical workers are sounding the alarm about a shortage of protective equipment. And the u. N. Warned today that soaring demand has lead to a flood of fake medical gear. Heres cbss carter evans. Reporter in california there is a dwindling supply of protective equipment. Theyre not protecting us. Theyre not saving our lives. Reporter this california nurse says she is wearing donated gear and has to wipeen. Nurse mary miller tolde she gets one mask per shift, seeing both Covid Patients and people ido are not infected. To have the thought of maybe were giving it to them, is not what we took our nursing oath for. Reporter in this memo to congress, six of the nations largest medical distributors warned raw material for p. P. E. Is now in a really bad position worldwide. Material for gowns is unavailable at any price. And continuing to supply protective equipment is not sustainable. Supply shortages in sacramento forced five covid testing sites to close. Rakesh tammabattula just set up a medical mask factory, but he is worried about a broken supply chain. When you see nurses and doctors who are struggling to protect themselves, what are you thinking . O protect themselves, what do are you thinking . I just hope there could be a simple process where we could sell directly to the reporter and when a vaccine is ready there could be a shortage of syringes. Cbs news has confirmed that at least two government contracts went to companies that have never produced syringes on such a massive scale. Norah . Odonnell this has got to be a top priority. Carter evans, thank you for your reporting. R your reporting. George floyd today we told officers more than 20 times that he could not breathe the night he died. That is according to transcripts of Police Bodycam video worn by former officer thomas lain who held floyds legs while fellow officer Derek Chauvin held a knee to floyds neck. Lain is asking a court to dismiss his charges of aiding and abetting murder. The transcripts show that he asked chauvin whether floyd should be turned on to his side, chauvin refused. Now to a racially charged verbal assault on an asian family that was caught on camera. Since the covid crisis began, many Asian Americans have been targeted by racial slurs and even physical attacks, and incidents likese at an alltime high. Heres cbss jeff pegues. You bleep need to leave. Reporter the San Francisco eech c. E. O. Who was caught on camera yelling racial slurs at an Asian American family on the fourth of july. bleep asian piece of bleep . Oh my. Reporter . Is now apologizing. I was shocked. Reporter Raymond Orosa and his family were celebrating his wifes birthday. Get out reporter do you think his apology is sincere . I do not. Reporter since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic there has been a sharp rise in attacks on Asian Americans across the country. In midland, texas, in march, a hate crime attack there left a man and his twoyearold with knife wounds across their faces. In april in new york a man poured acid on an Asian American woman. If you are from china, i need to know. Reporter there have been more than 2,000 reports in the u. S. Of discrimination and harassment aimed at Asian Americans since march. Some of that is driven by racist rhetoric from our elected officials. Kung flu. Reporter white house officials have repeatedly defended the president s statements. Amid the growing threat of e groavirus. You stupid bleep . Okay. Reporter and an increasing number of incidents targeting Asian Americans.
