We begin with breaking news tonight in San Francisco. Looking live at San Francisco city hall. Tonight, mayor and a city supervisor are awaiting coronavirus test results. The Mayors Office says she came into contact with someone with coronavirus. Supervisor Shamann Walton was also exposed to an infected individual. The two were together at this event in the bay view yesterday. The mayor and the supervisor were both exposed to a person with coronavirus at an event later on in the evening. We reached out to the Mayors Office for comment tonight and we are still waiting to hear back. More breaking news tonight out of Ventura County where authorities are searching for glee start naya riverra. Deputies say the 33yearold actress rented a boat about 1 00 this afternoon and about three hours later, it was another boater who found the child on the boat by himself. The child said rivery went swimming, but never came back. The boy was not hurt. Uc berkeley is reporting a spike in coronavirus this week. Why parties on frat row may be jeopardizing campus plans for the fall. Reporter yeah, uc berkeley announcing today its seen 47 new cases of coronavirus in just one week. To put that into perspective, thats more than 100 increase of total inspections since the pandemic began. School is out and summer is in full swing, but apparently so are the parties in the cal Greek Community. A student who wished to remain anonymous took this picture of a Party Outside a fraternity. No social distancing or a mask in sight. They clearly werent following any social distancing or mask wearing rules. Reporter michelle is one of them as a rising senior. She hopes to be able to attend career fairs to help her prepare for the future. But in a letter written to students today, uc berkeley says at the rate we are seeing increase in cases, its hard to imagine bringing our Campus Community back in the way we are envisioning. She has one message tow her fellow students who continue to party. Stop having them. Youre not only hurting yourself, but youre hurting everybody at berkeley. Reporter the goal is to have small classes in person and small bubbles of 10 to 12 students living on campus. Part of it is the party culture. I think the other thing is student house suggest not something that is subsidized adequately, they can hardly afford. It. So you can hardly blame students for living on top of one another. Reporter police did end up responding to the party to break it up. The university did not expose which fraternity or sorority held these parties and that is all we know at this moment. For that, the university has not disclosed and we will find out hopefully as more information comes forward. I hope so. Just a quick question here. I never envision frat parties as being closed off to the community. Infections must not be held to just the Greek Community i imagine. Apparently there have been secondary infections theyve seen in other households and other small gatherings. This is a reminder to make sure you avoid large gatherings and practice social distancing. Thanks so much. Tonight, stanford is dropping nearly a dozen sports from its storied Athletic Program in response to the coronavirus. What happens now for the athletes that will no longer be competing. United airlines has susended all flights to and from hong kong at sfo and all other u. S. Airports. Were told its due to new coronavirus screening requirements on flight crews in hong kong. Flights are suspended through at least friday. Mean while, united is warning nearly half of its employees they may be furloughed in the fall. About 36,000 united workers will receive lay off notices. New body camera video shows an officer opening fire from the back seat of a moving vehicle. Kpix 5s joe vazquez shows us. Reporter look closely and you can see gunshots crashing through the front windshield. The newly released body camera video is silence at first. A detective sitting in the back seat fired the fatal shots just as the pickup he was riding in arrived to a call for a looting at a walgreens. He pointed a gun at us dont move do not move reporter what the body camera video doesnt show is monterosa was in he was in a crushing, Half Kneeling position. His hands were toward his waist band when he turned toward the officers. The officers perceived a butt of a gun and they shot. Reporter it turned out it was not a gun. It was a hammer. We see the gunshots go through the windshield in the video. Is that appropriate to shoot from a moving car through the front windshield . Again, when an officer discharges his weapon, there are laws that govern that. We have an investigation. A criminal investigation and administrative investigation that happens. For me to draw conclusions at this point in the investigation would be inappropriate. I think clarity is what we want here. We want to know precisely what happened and we want to know whether or not it is a Police Officers imagination thats a function to justify the shooting or real evidence to support that. Reporter according to public records, vallejo, with a population of roughly 122,000, has had a total of 34 Police Shootings in the past decade, 18 of them fatal. 14 vallejo cops have been involved in the bulk of the shootings here. Activists are now referring to that list of officers as the fatal 14. Its 14 of them. Reporter none has been fired or charged with any crimes. Some family members recently marched to the district attorneys office. They need to be held accountable. They need to be fired and put in jail. Reporter the officer who fired the shots has not been publicly identified. A judge granted a restraining order that keeps the officers name secret. Mean while, the police chief says that restraining order doesnt even allow him to say whether the officer has been suspended or is still on the streets. The university of california plans to sue the Trump Administration over its attempt to ban some International Students from staying in the u. S. During the coronavirus pandemic. The rule would apply to students attending onlineonly cases. President trump is threatening to cut federal funding from schools that dont reopen this fall. Reporter today the president publicly disagreed with his own agencys suggestions on how to reopen schools, calling the cdcs advice tough and impractical. They are saying were going to go to, quote, as normal as possible. In a classroom, 35 kids, you cant socially distance and wear masks and keep everybody safe at the same time. Were both considered high risk. Im diabetic. Thats my biggest concern is him getting sick and bringing it home. Were safely reopening our country and very importantly, were safely reopening our schools. Reporter the president pushed to reopen schools this fall. Even as covid19 cases continue to soar. He tweeted, quote, may cut funding if not open. Youre just leaving us to bleed out and die, basically. Reporter jason says he works for an already struggling school. So he doesnt even know what ppe he needs. Some of the kids are underprivileged and dont have access to moan. The question of whether or not theyll have the proper masking, you know, all those kinds of things. Reporter School Districts continue to discuss whats best for them. Today San Franciscouneified School District held a town hall meeting about the Upcoming School year. Am i telling my kids who i care for every day that i would rather you show up and potentially get sick or potentially hurt someone you love over an education, it doesnt make sense to me. The number of Homeless People dying each year in Santa Clara County has more than quadrupled over the last two decades. Public records really tell the story and it might not be what you expect. With this new decade, comes new health concerns. Im in pain every day. My body hurts. Reporter she says her worries worsen with every day she spends on the street. My body out here has changed and its gotten weaker. Reporter public records obtained by kpix show a staggering increase in homeless deaths in Santa Clara County. Theyre up more than 400 since 2000. 166 people died last year compared to 31 in 2000. Every year, the body count climbs. Its unacceptable. Reporter andria is the c. E. O. Of home first, which serves more than 5,000 unhoused individuals in Santa Clara County annually. So people are aging and as they age, theyre contracting diseases, heart issues, diabetes, lung issues and theyre dying. Reporter as we reported previously on project home, more people than ever before are aging into homelessness. Back in the 90s, only 11 of people experiencing homelessness were over the age of 50. Now, over 50 are. And more than half those people became homeless for the first time after turning 50. Most people in Santa Clara County are living on the edge, check to check, and only 400 from becoming unhoused themselves. Reporter for 86yearold jamie arias, it was having nowhere to go after being acquitted and released from prison. 54yearold jose mendez says an expensive surgery caused him to lose housing. I had colon cancer. Reporter while 21 of homeless deaths were caused by alcohol and drug overdoses, 25 were caused by chronic illness alone. And the rest reflect the violence of the street from gunshot wounds to skull fractures or cold weather, where help arrived too late. I think about that all the time. What if i had a stroke, would anybody hear me . I just want i want to feel safe. I want to be safe. I dont feel safe. I dont. Reporter home first stopped making tombstones for the deceased years ago because it got too expensive. Now they hold a Memorial Service each year in which the names of the deceased are read out loud. Theresa says thats one thing that keeps her going, keeping her name off that list. Thats the first goal of not becoming a statistic out here of dying. It should come as no surprise that the medical Examiners Office told me its often difficult to find family members when someone does pass away on the street. And when they do find the family members, oftentimes they cant afford a funeral, so the county will cremate the body. And each cremation costs the county 500. Sad situation all the way around. Add coronavirus on top of this, the numbers may get higher because of what were going through now. Absolutely. A lot of people who are really sick and even more at risk now than ever before.
