For that and the latest coronavirus numbers, were joined by dr. Amesh adalja, senior collar at the Johns Hopkins center for health security. Good morning. First off, state Health Department officials are urging americans to stay at home this Holiday Weekend. You know, a lot of folks already have their plans. Whats the message . Whats the message to those who will certainly be out celebrating this holiday . The message is that every time you take any activity, theres always going to be some risk of you transmitting or acquiring this virus. That doesnt mean you have to stay at home and not do anything. It means that you cannot act as if were not in a pandemic. You need try and follow as much as possible social distancing rules, washing your hands a lot, not touching your face, wearing Face Coverings as needed in order to minimize the risk of you acquiring it or spreading the virus to someone. This is the new normal Going Forward until there is a vaccine. We have to get used to lifting in this era where there is this risk every time we step out the door. A majority of states are seeing an increase in cases, certain areas significantly. Some states are also seeing a rise in hospitalizations. What do you expect the month of july to look like . Its probably going to look just as it has looked in late june, meaning that were going to see more cases, were going to see more hot spots pop up. The key question is will we see hospitals under stress. I think thats what we have to keep in mind. Were trying to avoid a repeat of what happened in the early days of the pandemic where we were worried about ppe, ventilators. We havent heard so much about that, but there are places like arizona, houston, where we are thinking about how are they going to sustain the surge of patients. I think thats what to keep in mind. Were going to get cases, we have to keep them to a level thats manageable by the Health Departments and hospitals, through contact trace, so we dont go into that crisis mode again. Weve seen states implement some form of mandatory mask wearing in public. Do you believe all states should implement that . Right now we have many people out there that have very mild symptoms, maybe no symptoms, and they might be contagious. A Face Covering serves as source control so youre less likely to spread it. I think while we have all of these people out there, it makes sense to take this simple measure in order to stop transmission from occurring. It doesnt necessarily have to be a mask. It could be a face shield, as well. There are a couple of options here. Now that the consensus is that this is one way to decrease the spread. Theres so many people who dont realize theyre infected that are out there. Also want to ask you, youve recently written about the need for athome diagnostic testing it. Why is that important for right now and also in the future . Weve had this whole pandemic be marred by testing failure after testing failure. Were still talking about testing even though were doing 600,000 tests per day. Home diagnostic testing is a way to really empower patients, to be able to test themselves. It would alleviate lines at testing centers. Its a whole new paradigm of thinking about how we might manage Infectious Disease emergencies in the future. We do this for hiv. There is technology for influenza out there that could be adapted to coronavirus. There is a lot of political will now. I think we could call on some of congress funders to try and push this type of technology forward. It will be something that would change the way we think about mix, give us pandemics, give us advice about whats out there, and empower patients to take health into their own hands. Interesting to hear about that. The question is how long it would take. Dr. Amesh adalja, thank you so much for your time. Thank you. The world is now battling more than 11 million cases of the coronavirus. The global death toll tops 525,000 this morning. In england the lifting of restrictions is known as super saturday. When customers arrive, staff should register their names and numbers and keep that information for three weeks to help trace any infections. One english city that wont be joining in the festivities is leister. It went back into lockdown because of a speak in infections. Authorities are warning that other cities could face the same fate if people arent careful. Theyve also threatened to close beaches after thousands of people flocked to the coast last weekend to enjoy the hot weather. Britain has the highest covid19 death toll in europe. As people around the country prepare to celebrate the 4th of july, a new study is out showing the potential dangers of athome fireworks displays. Naomi ruckham reports. Reporter fireworks are bright and beautiful. They get their vibrant colors from metals. Now researchers at nyu grossplan school of medicine have found fireworks sold to consumers can release toxic metals into the air. I was surprised they were such high levels. Reporter lead author dr. Terry gordon said his son christopher came up with the idea to study the toxicity of fireworks particles for a science project. They collected airborne particles emitted from about a dozen different types of fireworks and tested them on human cells in the lab. We found high levels of lead in one of the 12 samples. And a common metal we found was copper at high levels. We also found strantium and titanium and aluminum. Reporter researchers analyzed air quality samples taken over 14 years and found toxic metal levels were higher around the 4th of july and new years eve. No one considers the metals in the particles that were going to breathe. Its mostly consumer fireworks are mostly for young children. One has to be aware that one should not assume that these are safe just because the manufacturer sells them. And obviously i feel that the manufacturers should up their game so to speak at testing fireworks. Reporter dr. Gordon says while more study is needed, he plans to share his findings with Health Officials, fireworks manufacturers, and regulatory agencies. Cbs news, new york. Welcome back to cbs this Morning Saturday. It is the season of the roadtrip, and most parents are well aware of the importance of child safety seats in the cars they drive. And ask your doctor if biktarvy is right for you. This Independence Day will be marked in part by protests. Many focusing on police practices. In that, theres a remarkable connection with the document we celebrate today. A close reading of the declaration of independence suggests its as much about the british armys unfair policing practices over colonists as it was about taxation without representation. In fact, ongoing demands for fairness, justice, and equality are as old as the nation itself. Expressed in protests through the generations. American protesters have used the 4th of july as a symbol, the declaration of independence, as a way to say to the nation you have noted up to the ideals. Reporter history professor Carol Faulkner pushback is as american as american pie. Reporter u. Penns Matthew O Williams the war is ceaseless. Reporter and lgbtreimer ins complicated. How has protests been in making america what it promised to be . Its fundamental. Its important to define what we mean by protests. Where essence is visible and protest. How do marginalized groups like women and africanamericans get a voice in this nation . Its through protests. Reporter rebellion broke out five years before the revolutionary war. Six years before independence was officially declared. All of the issues that were still grappling with now were an issue in the american revolution. What is the place of black people . What is the place of women in the country . And people who do not necessarily fit the mold . The way they spoke about their freedom, while at the same time keeping blacks enslaved here was sort of a conflicting conundrum. Reporter that original sin, preserving the institution of slavery, provoked some of the first protest movements from slaves and abolitionists alike, and pushback was fierce. And violent repercussions for those activists. The best example is in 1838, pennsylvania hall, abolitionists had to build their own building so they could have somewhere to speak. And a mob of over 10,000 people surrounded it the first it was built and burned it to the ground when black and white women were holding a convention inside to talk about the abolition of slavery. Reporter while violence is often use today to suppress calls for change, its been employed by the change agents themselves. What role has violent protests played in this country . I always say that nonviolent protests brings about awareness. And violence in protest brings about urgency, where individuals have to focus in and Pay Attention to these concerns. I would give the example of john brown and his raid on harpers ferry. Antislavery movement had been struggling for decades, and john brown concludes with his allies that only violence, only a direct attack on slavery. And it did not succeed, but he was also a martyr to the cause. Reporter even before it succeeded, the fight against slavery gave birth to another Liberation Movement when women were barred from the World Antislavery Convention of 1840. Within the antislavery movement, people thought women should shut up, they should stay out of it. La cretia mott said its acti activists should challenge the status quo and call attention to all its hypocrisies and falseness. Reporter the push for equal and civil rights suffered setbacks but also eventual triumphs. Winning the right to vote for women and for africanamericans after sustained decadelong maerchs. The landmark civil rights and Voting Rights acts which offered greater access to immigrants and people in other marginalized communities. Still, leaders kept pushing the needle. Moved on to protesting against the vietnam war. I can imagine lyndon b. Johnson saying theres another concession that i have to make. Reporter it was around that time another protest movement shook our world. The 1969 stonewall riots are recognized as the start of the gay Liberation Movement. In fact, the fight for acceptance was under way decades before, as reimer chronicles in his book, we are everywhere, and his social media posts. We start to see communities organizing. Its relatively small, but it is intense and vibrant. And it builds up into the mid century, and the mid 60s you see the first protests on the street. And what is uniquely empowering, potentially, about our community is that we are everywhere and everyone, every race, class, ability. Reporter because while these myriad movements have come far, they seek to travel even further as seen after the supreme courts extension of employment protection to the lgbtq work force last month. We didnt see the same outpouring of joyousness. Its a huge almost immediate. There was a response within the community. Whats next . [ chants ] we are seeing progress, but that progress is not to the point that leads to complete equity. I think the American Public has come to see as just normal doubledigit unemployment in the black community. Thats normal. Being harassed by police, thats normal. It comes to a point where protests have to put these issues in the forefront and say, hey, this is not right, this is not fair. Reporter how long is it going to take before we are a more Perfect Union . If we were ever content, we should be worried about ourselves. You dont have to be Martin Luther king. You dont have to be Lacretia Mott or harvey milk, but you might be. What is most important is that people understand that they need to stay in the struggle. And you know, those protesters in the 60s accomplished a lot with the passage of the Civil Rights Act with immigrants of color in particular. 20th century law and policy prioritized european immigrants from entee and outright banned others including the poor and those with mental or physical disabilities. And then of course came the civil rights movement. Fascinating piece of history there, michelle. Nice job. Our long history also includes incredible acts of heroism by soldiers, sailors, a airmen and women. How some will receive the highest of honors and are trying to inspire the next generation. First, our top story this hour President Trump chose an historic backdrop to kick off the nations 244th birthday. Defying the recommendations of doctors including members of his own Coronavirus Task force, mr. Trump and the first lady greeted about 7,000 spectators for fireworks last night at the base of mt. Rushmore in south dakota. The president thanked First Responders for their efforts in battling the virus, but he spent most of his time addressing what he calls attacks on the nations heritage. The Movement Across the country to remove controversial statues and monuments. We will expose this dangerous movement, protect our nations children, end this radical assault and preserve our beloved american way of life. Mr. Trump announced plans to create what he calls a garden of heroes. It would be an outdoor park that he says will feature the statues of the greatest americans to ever live. As pressure mounts from sponsors, the Washington Redskins say they are thoroughly reviewing their name and mascot. Fedex, bank of america, and pepsico have requested the team change its name. One sport that has already made changes in light of the protests against Racial Injustice is nascar. Last month, the racing organization banned the Confederate Flag from flying at its races. Noo nascar made the move two days after the lone black driver, bubba wallace, called for the flags removal. Speaking out on social issues is now for the 26yearold driver. I spoke with him about his newfound role as an athlete and activist. As you well know, four years ago, Colin Kaepernick began the kneel during the national anthem. That was a protest against Racial Injustice and police brutality. And it didnt end so well for him. What are your thoughts on colin and the courage it took for him to take that stand, taking your stand the way you did and receiving quite the opposite reaction . I remember when, you know, Colin Kaepernick kneeled for the first time. And i knew the type of message that it sent out. I did not understand at the time i didnt understand what was being done and why it was being done. And it quickly became a conversation of all sports. And i took the time to educate myself and see that, one it has nothing to do with disrespecting our military, has nothing to do with disrespecting our flag. It is simply saying it will not stand for whats going on in this world today with the oppression of black people and how africanamerican races is treated. But people dont want to realize that thats what it is. They simply see it as disrespecting the flag and the military when people of the military have stepped up and said this has nothing to do with disrespecting our flag or our military or the country i have fought for. We had a powerful moment at atlanta where a nascar official, curt price, a former military member, fought for our country, took a kneel. If that doesnt speak volumes to you, then those are the types of people that will never change. Its just like youre missing the point. Youre missing the boat here. You can see the rest of our interview today on cbs sports connected, thats right, on cbs sports. It airs right here on cbs at 1 00 p. M. Eastern. Millions of americans will be celebrating this Holiday Weekend, but not on the beach. Pennsylvania and texas are hoping to slow the increase by mandating the wearing of Face Coverings in public. Necks were craned at the base of mt. Rushmore in south dakota as fireworks ushered in the 4th of july. The coronavirus has forced many cities to cancel or at least scale down their 4th of July Fireworks celebrations to comply with social distancing regulations. That doesnt mean people wont be having their own celebrations using back yard fireworks imported from china. Ramy inocencio has the story. Reporter unlike years past, this 4th of july wont dazzle as bright or boom as loud as cities cancel their fireworks shows over fears normally massive crowds would lead to new explosions of coronavirus. As they go up, theyre going to have a crackle and pop. Reporter the Global Pandemic hasnt stopped Many Americans from planning their own fourth of july blowouts using back yards fireworks. Most of which are produced halfway around the world. In factories like there one in chinas hunan province. All the fireworks in this room are going to make it to our showrooms for july 4th, 2020. Reporter jessie dragoiu is in charge of purchasing for phantom fireworks. The youngstown, ohio, company says it buys at least 99 of its products from china. We spoke to jessie while she office a tour last december before the pandemic started along with social distancing. How importance is china to phantoms Business Model in the United States . Without the manufacturing here, we dont operate. Without china, the industry ceases to exist. Reporter and this city bills itself as the birthplace of fireworks. More than 1,400 years ago. Now over 1,000 small factories supply the world, a mostly female work force working in shifts, makes each blinking cloud and Rocket Launcher by hand before theyre packaged and shipped. Theres so much involved in it thats been passed on from generation to generation. Its not easily replicated anywhere. Reporter the past year hasnt been easy for the fireworks industry. The pandemic slowed production and demand, but its been under threat of tariffs for longer, part of President Trumps ongoing trade war with china. But each night, the skies above look like a celebration is still happening. Manufacturers run qualitycontrol explosions from the citys official testing ground. Launching the same bottle rockets and red cakes that americans are snapping up for their own personal july 4th parties social distanced from neighbors. For cbs this Morning Saturday, ramy inocencio, china. It is about seven minutes after the hour. Heres a look at the weather for your weekend. We must all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately. Thats what founding father ben franklin had to say about the declaration of independence. As an act of treason against british rule they were putting their lives at risk. So, too, was a woman you probably havent heard of. A printer who created the first copies of the famous document who, like the founding fathers, wasnt afraid to put her name right on them. Dana jacobson reports. And this is one of the only copies reporter inside the massachusetts archives and Commonwealth Museum sits a national treasure. The declaration that announced the birth of our nation. At a time i think when so many issues and controversies and turmoil is out there, i think this particular holiday, the 4th of july, and this particular document really is a thing that we can all unite about. Reporter and secretary of the commonwealth William Galvin says if you look a little closer at this copy, you might notice an unfamiliar name. Mary Catherine Goddard. At the bottom she wrote, printed in baltimore, maryland, by Mary Catherine goddard. Her full name. Really saying i support this cause, and i want my voice to be heard, too. Reporter princeton historian martha king is writing a book about female colonial printers, including goddard. Congress had fled philadelphia. This is in the middle of the war, and had settled temporarily in baltimore. So she happened to be the printer in baltimore at that time and that moment. Congress needed someone to print this declaration with the names finally from july 4th, 76. They want people to know who these people are who put their names on the line. Really an act of treason to put ones signature. She printed that in january of 1777. Reporter although her name is not well known and no drawings of her exist, goddard made an impression. For over nine years she really ran a weekly paper in baltimore, a single woman doing this, too. And she has the important responsibility also as postmaster for the town to make sure the mail and the chain of communication flows. As a printer during wartime, news of battles, news of what the probable outcome of this war for independence would be. Reporter goddard would be postmistress of baltimore for 14 years, technically the first female federal employee until a new postmaster general replaced her with a plan in the fall of 1789. Over 230 baltimore residents and merchants wrote a petition on her behalf. She spoke up, and she said this is unjust treatment and tried to have it remediated but was. Successful. Reporter she used census and tax records to get a more accurate depiction of the story. Like others of the time, she was a slave owner. The 1790 census, the first census, i would able to track her reporter wow and find that she owned four slaves and had one other free person in her household at that time. Mary Catherine Goddard did have this enslaved woman, belinda starling, that she monumented in her will. She left all of her personal property to her. She liberated a woman as her final deathbed wish. I think theres more to that that i want to study and find out about. Oftentimes i fear that women are not included in the page of history. S and thats an impression that women were not involved in the fight for independence. And that is not true. Reporter Denise Vanburen is the president general of the daughters of the american revolution. Mary Catherine Goddard should inspire us today to raise our voices, to be part of the discussion, and to help chart the course for the nation. Its important that we recognize that not only women but people of color, foreignborn patriots, all contributed to our victory during the american revolution. Reporter for printer and artist mindy belloff, maerry Catherine Goddard is important. As a feminist artist i felt that were still sort of grappling with this language today. I spoke with some historians about what all men meant at that time. Did it mean all men or all white men who were landowners or all mankind . One british historian felt that it was understood to be all mankind. I felt that it was time to set the record straight. Reporter to do so, belloff recreated g ed goddards print with the accurate typeface and paper. This is the historic recreation. Thats accurate to two mary goddard printed. And so in the contemporary, i changed the word man in two places from we hold these truths to be selfevident that all men are created equal. Its mentioned twice here. Right. And so its rewritten as people. Reporter belloffs printings are in the Permanent Collection of the library of congress and other institutions. All men are created equal. Did you put yourself in her shoes and wonder what that might have been like for a woman to be printing those words at the time . Absolutely. I wondered about the that quite a bit. And how it was understood when the enslaved and women at that time were wanted a voice in this new republic. It was interesting for me on many different levels, especially when we think about whats going on today and how we use words and language and how its understood. And what an important document this was at the tumultuous time. Reporter and according to martha king, at this tumultuous time, as well. I think with the declaration of independence, this call for a United Country based on the ideals of equality rather than exclusion. I think it merits us reading the declaration of independence in 2020 as much as people were reading it and signing it in 1776. Does this ring true for us today, or is it still aspirational in some ways . Sounds about right to me. Right, michelle . So interesting to see that recreation. And mary Katherine Goddard, a name i think people will not forget. Yeah. I certainly wont. Thank you so much, dana, for bringing that story to us. Wherever you are. His book is serial griller, a trip across america that makes you think and makes you hungry. With the help of his small 1976 piper cherokee plane in the air and countless car rides on the ground, matt moore traveled 10,000 meals in three months to put together his latest book. Its a rolling, grilling guest party across america. You were all over america, but it feels like a global book. The greatest part about where we are is we all come from somewhere else. And one of the commonalities that we share is that we bring our cuisines. Reporter from lillians barbecue in atlanta to fajitas at gogo in houston and zahav in philadelphia, if you have a craving for any particular style, it is easy to find in serial griller, moores 125recipe tribute to fire and friendship. First the basics. As moore explains, the allimportant difference between a barbecue and grilling. Theres. As a southerner we afternoon talk about what is barbecue and what is grilling. My wife is from wisconsin. So i love her to death, but when she invited me to the first summer barbecue, there were bratwursts and cheese which is not technically barbecue. As a southerner, im expected slowly roasted pork or briquette. Ever flooding barbecue happens below 300 degrees. Were focuses on all the goodness that happens above that temperature where you get the sugars and citizenzymes that create the brown food. Brown food is good food is scientific, says moore. He talks about the mired reaction, that chemical dance between amino acids and sugars that takes place when food is prepared above 300 degrees. Purists will always argue for hardwood to produce that heat, but there are many ways to get there. One of the things i wanted to strive to do in writing this book is not discriminate whether youre a grass griller, hardwood griller, but setting up different zones of fire. Reporter for the 4th of july, moore showed us a feast. Lets talk about whats on the able to first. First in my hand most importantly, a little cocktail. We picked this up in charleston, south carolina. A day tripper, lemon juice, vodka, sweet tea extracextract, lavender bitters. Cheers. Happy 4th. Plated down here, all of it fresh off a grill, three down ribs, chicken thighs with herb salsa, octopus souvlaki, twostep brat sliders with mustard, heirloom caprese salad. One of my favorite artists of all time is sam cook. He was a singer, songwriter, businessman. And one of his most famous songs was called a change is gonna come. Hes noted as saying that it was inspired by bob dylans blowing in the wind. He thought it was the perfect sentiment for the civil rights movement, should have been ra written by a black man and endeavored to create something as powerful. Because im inspired by sam acok and he was inspired, this is blowing in the wind how many seas must a white dove see before shes in the sand how many times must a cannonball fly before theyre forever banned the answer my friend is blowing in the wind the answer is blowing in the wind how many years with a mountain exist before it washed to the sea and how many years can some people exist before theyre allowed to be free and how many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesnt see the answer my friend is blowing in the wind the answer is blowing in the wind yes and how many times must a man look up before he can see the sky and how many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry yes how many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died the answer my friend is blowin in the wind the answer is blowing in the wind the answer, my friend the answer is blowing in the wind that was amazing.
