Despite the advice from Public Health experts, President Trump continues to be seen without a mask while in public. Donald trump is for masking up like George Wallace was for integration. The white house says President Trump did not hear part of a video he retweeted in which one of his supporters yelled white power. This is really not about the president taking it down. This is about the judgment of the president in putting it up. So you wont say black lives matter. John, i really believe that all lives matter. Okay. And thats where the heart of the American People lies. Mississippi lawmakers have overwhelmingly improved a measure to remove a confederate battle emblem from its state flag. A rainbow emerged from under the coronavirus cloud as people around the world celebrated pride with online parties and reallife protests. Speak out and dont be afraid because were behind you. Tony is not broadcasting from his basement. And i successfully tied a tie for the first time in about 100 days. On the first attempt, i should tell you. But only a small number of us are back in the building out of an abundance of caution. One of us will always be broadcasting remotely for the time being. That one of us right now is ms. Gayle king. Tony, im so glad youre back in the studio. Feels good to be back in the studio. I get it. I wish i could say im jealous but im thrilled to be in california where you can walk in the grass, roll around in the grass. I had no idea how much i missed it. But im so glad were still up on the air. Its a little earlier than usual than it is on the east coast, but im thrilled were all back in our places with bright, shani fa shiny faces. We begin with the alarming surge in coronavirus numbers. The last four days have seen the largest increases in cases since the start of the pandemic. In hardhit jacksonville, florida, hundreds of cars lined up at a testing site. Similar scenes are playing out across the country. Since friday, at least seven states have reported record numbers of new daily coronavirus cases. At least 13 states have halted their plans to reopen, including california and texas. Janet shamlian is in houston outside memorial herman texas medical center. Whats the situation there . Anthony, good morning. Like many hospitals in houston, the icu is near capacity this morning. To stop the surge, restaurants across the state can only be at 50 Capacity Starting today. And texas bars had to shut down as of noon on friday. Texas Governor Greg Abbott now saying he regrets opening so early. We need to understand that covid19 is taking a very swift and very dangerous turn. Reporter a dire warning from texas Governor Greg Abbott. After new coronavirus cases hit almost 6,000 in one day. It will take these, worn by everybody, in the coming days to make sure that we will protect those lives. Reporter abbott was joined by Vice President mike pence who wore a mask before speaking at a Dallas Church sunday. More than 100 choir members did not. Secretary of health and Human Services alex azar warns sunday the pandemic is entering a critical phase. Things are very different from two months ago. The window is closing for us to take action and get this under control. Reporter governor gavin newsom is scaling back the states reopening after a surge in cases there. Hes ordered bars in seven counties to close immediately. Including in los angeles. It feels like it happened in the blink of an eye. Reporter Danielle Lopez says her uncle went to a Backyard Barbecue in Southern California about two weeks ago where he later learned someone had the virus. He and more than a dozen others became infected. Just days before he passed, he posted to facebook, because of my stupidity, i put my mom and sisters and my familys health in jeopardy. This is no joke. Wear a mask. I hate to think that he left worrying about all of us left behind and that he may have potentially infected somebody in our family. Reporter danielle says thankfully no one else at that barbecue is seriously ill. Here in texas, as the cases grow, so does the demand for testing. Over the weekend, there were two testing sites here in the houston area at stadiums. Within just a few hours, they were full to capacity of what they could handle. Gayle . Its very important. We have to Pay Attention to this. Thank you, janet. Another state experiencing a very worrying surge is florida which reported more than 18,000 new cases over the weekend alone. Local leaders blame irresponsible people who defy the rules and the guidelines. Manuel bojorquez reports from miami beach. Theres no doubt that the growth right now is exponential. Reporter miamis mayor says all options are on the Table Including another stayathome order as his city races to contain a surge in coronavirus cases. And for anyone who says but the death rate is so much lower now, you would say what . What i would say is its yet to be determined. To i want them to be ready because you dont want people to die as a result of this. And its certainly not as a result of irresponsible behavior. Reporter concerns over irresponsible behavior led officials in miamidade and broward counties to close the beaches over the fourth of july weekend. Hospitalizations are up more than 50 in Miamidade County from last week. And the 14day average rate of positive tests is more than 16 . Statewide, the rate of positivity is roughly 12 and climbing. Officials say the increase is not just the result of more tests. You see an increase in positivity, yet youre testing more but youre finding more cases at a faster clip. Reporter on friday, the white house flagged ten states with the largest increases in test positivity. In all of them, people below the age of 40 account for the largest number of positive cases. And as young people increasingly test positive, some appear unfazed by the Public Health risk gatherings pose. We have a good immune system so we can handle it. Reporter but the virus can have dire consequences for younger people like allie gidree who was hospitalized in may. When she went to the hospital, she was only 20 weeks pregnantz. She hung on long enough to do what she had to do in order to give us maddie. Allie died thursday but her daughter madeleine survived an emergency csection and is now in the neonatal icu. Allies mom denise and her fiance michael are urging people not to take chances with the virus. We would hear about the deaths of the older people. Not a 29yearold thats healthy. Love your family. Its not guaranteed. Allie gidree is survived by her mother, her fiance, her 8yearold son aiden and now her daughter madeleine. Madeleine weighs just about 2 pounds and is it stable condition. Just last week, the cdc released a report saying pregnant women are more likely to end up in the hospital, in the icu and on a ventilator because of the coronavirus. Rooting for baby madeleine there. Thank you, manny. The latest cbs news poll finds republicans are less likely to wear a mask in public than democrats. Look at these numbers. More republicans, 59 , describe it as a personal choice while 76 of democrats say its a Public Health responsibility. Our poll also found 62 of americans think the u. S. Is dealing badly with the coronavirus. We should note that nearly all Health Officials, nearly all Health Officials recommend wearing a mask in public. Ed okeefe reports on the mixed messages coming from americas leaders. If your local officials in consultation with the state are directing you to wear a mask, we encourage everyone to wear a mask. Despite Vice President pence showing support for masks on sunday, in an interview taped saturday with face the nation, he said that he and President Trump believe its up to local official to set the rules. Weve made it clear we want to deforegovernors. We want to defer to local officials. Reporter its stretched beyond masks to testing and reopening. And its leading to mixed outcomes. If i could go back and redo anything, it probably would have been to slow down the opening of bars. We used science and we wouldnt open any region unless they hit certain metrics. Reporter science shows when people wear masks the virus doesnt transmit as easily. But across the country, theres confusion as mayors, county leaders and governors all set different examples. In new jersey, where masks are required in most public places, democratic Governor Phil Murphy public lly shames constituents how to wear one. But Asa Hutchinson says a statewide mandate would be difficult. Were not going to pass a mandate thats unenforceable. Reporter from the beginning of the pandemic, mr. Trump has shunned masks. The president denies reports that he was briefed on an alleged russian plot to pay bounties to talibanlinked fighters who kill u. S. Troops in afghanistan. The story was first reported by the New York Times. Sources say cbs news intelligence agencies had received information on the plot but disagreed on whether it was accurate. Mr. Trump also faced criticism yesterday for retweeting a video where a supporter is heard yelling white power. Ben tracy is at the white house. How is the administration explaining this . Good morning. The white house is saying that President Trump did not hear the racist phrase on that video before tweeting it out to his nearly 83 million followers. There was severe backlash. And after that, President Trump deleted the tweet. The video shows a parade of President Trump supporters in the Villages Retirement Community in florida. Angry antitrump protesters are clashing with them when a man riding in a trump 2020 golf cart yells the racist phrase. White power reporter the president retweeted the video sunday morning thanking the great people of the villages. We should stand up and say thats not right. Reporter senator tim skorco the only black republican in the senate, did not even try to defend the president. We should take it down. Reporter President Trump deleted the tweet about an hour later without commenting on it. In a statement, the white house said President Trump did not hear the one statement made on the video. This is not the only controversy on which the white house is claiming the president was not fully read in. After the New York Times reported that russians tried to pay talibanlinked fighters to kill u. S. Troops in afghanistan, the president says he was never briefed on the matter. On twitter, republican congresswoman liz cheney asked why the president wasnt briefed and what is being done to protect our forces and hold putin accountable . Democrats are asking the same thing. This is totally outrageous. You would think that the minute the president heard it that he would want to know more instead of denying that he knew anything. Reporter in a latenight tweet, the president said the intelligence officials didnt brief him because they did not find this info to be credible. Mr. Trump suggested the story was a hoax. Now shortly before the president s tweet, the Washington Post reported that u. S. Service members died as a result of that russian bounty. The kremlin is calling all of this lies, and they say that President Trump and Vladimir Putin have not discussed the allegations. Gayle . A lot of questions for the president this morning. Thank you very much, ben. The four former Minneapolis Police officers charged in the death of george floyd are set to make their Second Court Appearance today. Jamie yuccas is in minneapolis with more on that story. Good morning, jamie. What can we expect from this hearing today . Reporter good morning, gayle. We know that all four former Minneapolis Police officers are expected to appear before the court today, including derek chauvin. Chauvin, whose charged include unintentional seconddegree murder is expected to appear virtually. The other three officers are expected to appear in person. Since floyds death there have been calls around the country for police reform. On friday, the City Council Members advanced the proposal that could replace the Police Department. That vote coming after police recorded more than 100 people shot since the death of george floyd, including at least seven who were killed. I spoke with City Council Member jeremiah ellison. When youre talking about dismantling the Police Department, youre not saying that Police Officers are just going to go away. Absolutely. And certainly not right away. Were trying to provide a level of safety that we feel like our current Public Safety system doesnt currently provide. So you actually see the up tick in shootings and Violent Crime as evidence as to why there needs to be reform . Absolutely, i would. When people lose confidence in the Public Safety system, in the police, violence tends to increase after that. The vote is just the first step in a process to get it on the november ballot. Facebook and its cofounder smz one of the main targets of the companys efforts. Simple rights organizations have called for an ad boycott saying it does not do enough to stop racist and violent content. Jericka duncan looks at what starbucks and other businesses are hoping to accomplish. Reporter with the commanding 4 share of the American Coffee shop market and the deep pockets that flood facebook, instagram, and twitter with millions in promotion, starbucks says its forcefully hitting the pause button on paid advertising across its social media platforms. In a statement, starbucks announced its intention to stand against online hate speech saying in part both Business Leaders and policymakers need to come together to effect real change. The boycott follows similar pledges from other fortune 500 brands like cocacola and unilever. Starbucks did not mention the stop hate for Profit Campaign which calls on big brands to pull ad spending from facebook. It is time once and for all for Mark Zuckerberg and for facebook to stand up and to take a stand against hate. Reporter Jonathan Greenblatt is ceo of the antidefamation league, one of the organizations behind stop hate for profit. What are you hoping this campaign will actually achieve . Its long overdue for facebook to put a real civil rights infrastructure together at the highest levels of the corporation to make sure these issues get the attention that they need. If we determine the content may lead to violence or deprive people of their right to vote, were going to take that content down no matter who says it. Reporter facebook announced new guidelines friday after the companys share price tumbled more than 8 , slashing 56 billion from its value. The biggest brands in the world are saying they are no longer willing to subsidize stereotypes. They want to stop hate for profit. We saw the dramatic impacts on businesses in one small Pennsylvania Community where people tend to know each other, and the losses can feel more personal. We also found that small towns might have a better chance of riding out this economic storm. Along main street, usa, stores are cautiously reopening. Some people are venturing out. We we have to keep our hearts in the right place so this way we can move forward. Reporter how do you think your neighbors are doing, your town is doing . I mean, there are some people who are not able to come back, but you know, well take care of them. Everybody will gather round, and well you know, well do what needs to be done. Reporter that spirit it seems is a characteristic of small towns. A particular thing that people often are craving at this moment in american history, which is a sense of connection. Reporter James Fallows spent years visiting places other people drive past or fly over. Along with his wife, wrote a book on the topic. He says no other city has been impacted more by the virus than americas largest new york. Until now. The longer term concern about what it will take to rebuild, to reattract residents, to restore small businesses, to regain a sense of momentum, that concern is more widespread in smaller towns, and they think they have a longer road ahead of them. Reporter what if anything about the qualities in small towns makes you hopeful they will survive . A town that has already been around for 100 years or more has already been through a lot. It was through the great depressi depression. It was through the world wars and the financial shocks of the last 20 or 30 years. People there know how to reinvent themselves. The challenge is to reinvent themselves again. Reporter it could be tough for Record Store Owner tom lefevre. It seems like stores are about who come to them, the broughting, talking with the guy behind the counter. Definitely a personal experience. Reporter the experience has changed a bit at main street jukebox, a shop thats survived the age of digital music. How long has it been since someone walked in like i did . A couple of months. Reporter have you ever had a stretch where you couldnt do business . I have actually 12, 13 years ago, i was across the street. That was where my business was. We talk about boston strong or new york strong or houston strong. Theres a smalltown strong out there, as well. I love a good small town. Listen, i love andrea snyders pigtails, if i go there, i would want to go to quench cafe to say hi. Of all the places, how did you pick that place, the main street jukebox. Looks like a great place. We wanted to find a place within driving distance because we didnt want to get on a palestiniaplane and wasnt connected to a major city like new york or boston and had 25,000 people. Millions of americans live in towns smaller than 25,000 people including my mom. You do get an incredible strength in a Small Community like that. You know its a Good Community when they have a good record store. Thats a good one. Yeah. We all have got to practice social distancing. We need to wear facial coverings when we cant social distance and weve got to engage in appropriate personal hygiene. But one thing thats important for the people of the country to know is that our situation is very different than it was two months ago, and in fact, we just made a very important announcement that President Trump secured half a million courses of therapy of the drug remdesiv remdesivir. Its used to treat people with covid in the hospital and can reduce the length of stay by as much as onethird, and were going to make sure that drug gets to the hospitals. That most need it to take care of american patients. But i want to get to that in a second, mr. Secretary. But i want to get to the question of did we reopen too fast, do you think . So weve got to get back to work, back to school, and back to health care. And weve seen states that have reopened just as much as the counties that are at issue here. And have not seen these kinds of outbreaks. We have to all take personal responsibility because even within reopening, we have always said the president has said in his guidelines for reopening, practice social distancing. Wear facial coverings when you cant. And practice good personal hygiene. If we dont act responsibly, were going to see governors pull back on those reopenings if we dont act responsibly. Weve got to support this so we can get our country up and running. Cases were still on the rise and they restarted reopening anyway. Well, we can defer to our states to make the call on when its safe so reopen, but our individual behaviors drive whether we see spread of disease. If we social distance, if we protect ourselves and others by wearing facial coverings when we cant social distance, were going to protect not just ourselves. Were going to protect family members. If you have vulnerable family members at home, over 80 or those suffering from key comor midties like diabetes, obesity orchidny failure, youre putting them at risk. When youre at the Grocery Store line, you could be impacting a Vulnerable Person next to you. So please, practice appropriate social distancing and protect others and yourself by wearing facial coverings when you cant. Shouldnt the president be wearing a mask if were telling everybody in the country they should be wearing a mask . The president s situation is very different as a leader of the free world. Hes the most tested person probably on earth. Everybody with him is tested before theyre with him that day. Hes kept in a very protected bubble. Its a very different situation. He has called for in his own guidelines, from day one, for social distancing and wearing facial coverings. Mr. Secretary, arent you sending a conflicting signal . Its confusing to people. Get engaged in the community. Test everybody in the community, find the cases, isolate the individuals. The National Aids quilt was created in 1987 as a way to remember those who have died from aids, a panel for each person lost. John cunningham is executive director of the National Aids memorial. I found myself laughing at times when i thought should i be laughing at this. Starting with revrations. Much reparations. You said the only thing black americas got is popeyes chicken. What do you mean . Yeah. Thats the closest we came reparations for it didnt. Yeah reparations were hot and heavy, and then the chicken sandwich came out, popeyes, and we havent heard anything about it since. And they ran out of chicken when we started liking it. The title is basically whats basically happening now. I started writing this a year and a half ago. But basically, it is about america giving up its White Privilege and the idea of what that means, and letting everybody else be a part of the american experiment. And i think had i known that all of this that nascar would be talking about black lives matter, that the nfl would recognize juneteenth, and that people would be saying black lives matter in all kind of arenas that you never imagined it, it would have been a shock. The book basically is asking what theyre starting to do now. But thats what i think is so interesting, d. L. You started writing this a year and a half ago, not knowing it would be as relevant as it is today. Yeah, the thing about race in america, like black people in america is like a marvin gaye song, mercy, mercy me, whats going on all those things were happening because we keep coming back to the same places and rehashing the same things. I dont know that in my lifetime ive seen people so tuned in, you know, i think the incidents of un, the Ahmaud Arbery and breonna tailor and with george floyd and america having to be at home because of coronavirus. We have the rapt attention. It seems that people are more now attuned to a frequency they never were before. I know. But this is the thing that got me. I found myself i said in the beginning laughing at things i thought i shouldnt be laughing at. You say for instance when it comes to black people and getting arrests i really did you said in the media you can always tell what the suspect is when they use the words what . Yeah. When they say apprehended and in custody you know its a white dude. Why . When they say apprehended and why . Because black dudes are always shot. One is youll see him going to burger king, the other is a yellow line with a tarp across them. Its i can always tell. I always know exactly what and you know, whatever else is interesting, i have seen cops more angry with ive seen cops more angry with a black motorist who asked them why they were pulled over than i do like a dylann roof who committed mass murder. Ive never seen a white mass murderer being walked to a squad car with people, policemen trying to get at him and everybodys trying to hold them back. Ill see that when Police Officers when a black motorist asks why theyre pulled over, or i know my rights. Theyre more angry about someone asking what theyre being pulled over for than someone who just murdered nine people. Something else that was timely. You talk about racist image rye. We just had the whole conversation about aunt jemima, yet you write about it in your book. Whats your take on racist imagery . That americas more comfortable with a black woman on a pancake box than on a 20 bill. I remember at one point they were talking about putting Andrew Jackson on the front of the 20, and Harriet Tubman on the back which is crazy because thats a slave on the front and a slave owner on the back. Even when black people finally make it to money, were still going to have a supervisor. Its crazy. Are you finding that more white people are seeking you out these days for advice or just want to have a conversation . I think thats happening. Thats a phenomenon ive noticed a lot. I was home, you know, shortly after the uprisings. And then this older couple who theyve been neighbors for 20 years. They came up like, were so sorry. We didnt know what was going on. Were so sorry is there anything we can do . Ive been here 22 years, you could have done it would have been great 20 years ago. But you see theres there is the interesting thing is that people for whatever reason were obtuse and maybe they obtuse or naive or maybe didnt care. I think now people, like i said, are tuned into a frequency they werent before. But dont you think the death i know this is true, the death of george floyd right before our eyes has many people thinking very differently these days. I think so. But that you contrast with that, of course it was a horrible thing to watch. And i think its a video i cant even watch now. But i think the interesting dichotomy in america is there are people appalled by the video, by the brutality that was visited on that video. But those very people will fight to keep the monuments of men who did far worse to black people. Theres a statue to a black to a man in new york as we speak who performed surgery, open heart surgery on women with no anesthesia. Andrew jackson did far worse, and yet theyre appalled by what happened in minneapolis, and the image they saw. But fight for the image of men who did far worse to people. Yeah. You know, we have to i want to talk about you and your health because were not going to show the video, but theres video of you collapsing on stage. It turns to out you had covid. And i had no idea that you had any im surprised youre laughing about it. Its not funny to say that it was you had no idea that you had the symptoms. It was funny . I had it was not funny then. What was nothings actually funny, but you look at the things around it. Like i never knew it happened and then i passed out and derek whos my security guard, let me fall apparently. Hes a Great Security guard but a horrible shortstop. But we were performing so i didnt know what happened. And i go to the hospital, and they Start Performing all these tests. So they one of the tests they wanted to ask was the covid. Nobody thought anything would come of it. But i was being treated for dehydration and exhaustion. They ran the covid, and i had it. Yeah. So when i got back to the hotel in nashville, they were like, will you please get out . Black lives matter but not in the lobby of the thompson it doesnt. They made me leave. And they asked you to leave the hotel . I heard you say you were going to quarantine for 14 days. The hotel asked you to leave . I was. The hotel was like, hey, we cant have a covid it was all over the news. Like i was walking in the lobby and people were closing doors. I understood, you know, basically about we had to get, you know, commercial jets wouldnt fly us obviously. We had to get a private jet and three of them turned us down. Did you pay your bill . D. L. Hughley, did you homeless with covid. You had to pay your hotel bill . They wanted me to leave so bad, they didnt no, when they were so ready for me to go, they didnt make me pay for the daze i stayed there. Theyre days i stayed there.
