Believe me. So get the king dons bible today before supplies are hurled at protesters. And, remember, if someone slaps you on the cheek, i got two words for you tear. Gas. Its a late show with Stephen Colbert. Tonight coup and what army . Plus, stephen welcomes Keegan Michael key and wes moore. And now, live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen look at the hair. The hair is getting out of control. You ready to do this . One, two. Phew welcome to a late show. I am your host, Stephen Colbert. Its yet another historic day here in america. And, as usual with donald trump, it aint the good kind of history. Ken burns, ive got your next project the civil war 2 half the civil, all the war. For a week, americas streets have been filled with protesters enraged over the murder of george floyd by police, while trump said practically nothing. But last night, around 6 45, he finally appeared in the rose garden to calm a troubled nation by threatening martial law. I am mobilizing all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting, to end the destruction and arson, and to protect the rights of law abiding americans. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them. Stephen so, in response to protests about police brutality, youre threatening to send in the army to crush them. Thats like forgetting your childs birthday and apologizing by sending in the army to crush them. Trump explained his decision i am your president of law and order. Stephen as trump both original and s. V. U. im also your president of csi miami, ncis los angeles, and paw patrol. So, im sorry, youre the president of law and order, and what else . And an ally of all peaceful protestors. Stephen its true. As long as theyre white, holding an ar15, and screaming, i want a haircut then the president went back to his lawandorder theme. One law and order. And that is what it is one law. We have one beautiful law. Stephen wait a second is it possible trump thinks we have only one law . Thats why hes broken so many . as trump as far as i know, theres a law against ripping off those mattress tags, and Everything Else is the purge ded th with this clifger ow i goingpamy o a ve, very special place. Thank you very much. Stephen a special place . Where . Where could he be going . Its like hes hosting a reality show, especially when you see the full clip now im going to pay my respects to a very, very special place. Thank you very much. Coming up on americas got dictator, donald reveals his very, very special place to Khloe Kardashian and one of joe exotics tigers after this message from buffalo wing slims no justice, how about a six piece . Stephen now, it turns out, trumps very, very special place was the historic st. Johns church, which had been damaged in protests over the weekend. One problem there was a crowd of Peaceful Protesters in the way, so he had military Police Open Fire with rubber bullets, flash grenades, and tear gas. Not only is that a horrific abuse of the office of thend our thar gas wasetely unnecessary. When people see trump walking toward them down the street, they naturally cry and vomit. And wait a second, didnt trump just say this and an ally of all peaceful protestors. Stephen as trump im sorry, did i say ally . I meant a lie. as in, right now i am telling a lie. Now, heres how bald this display of authoritarianism is. While hes giving his speech in the rose garden, you can actually hear the military flash grenades exploding among the protestors in the background. Where there is no law, there is no opportunity. explosion stephen as trump and where there is law, opportunity knocks. You in the head with a billy club, or just shoots you in the nuts with a rubber bullet. Once the path was cleared for caesars brave shamble, trump made his way across the street to the boardedup church, where he, with visible confusion and discomfort, groped a bible. as trump ive only seen one of twhen i. Lets see if i can remember. Hold the bible, and then you raise your right hand. Is that it . Am i extra sworn in . Am i president double stufft . Then a reporter asked trump about his little prop there is that your bible . Its a bible. Stephen i dont have a bible. My bible, as always, is hustler magazine. This thing is the most boring magazine i have ever seen. It doesnt even have a centerfold which is too bad because i heard bathsheba had a pretty sweet can. So trump left his speech in the rose garden and had the military clear the streets, so he could come to this church. He must have had something really important to say to haul out the authoritarian hobnail boots. So a reporter asked the president what he was thinking. Spoiler alert not much. Stephen great country . Thats your thoughts. You know, the president of that country just unleashed the military on peaceful protestors. You sure you dont want to thoughts that over some more . Finally, trump revealed his true reason for the mission a photo op with his allwhite advisors. Now, reportedly, the reason trump wanted this meaningless photo was because he was upset by coverage of the fact that he had been rushed to the underground bunker on friday night. Not sure if he thought that one through. as trump oh, they think im a coward, do they . Ill show them. Quick, go assault a bunch of Peaceful Protesters. Daddys gotta frown in front of a church and hold a bible like a fly swatter. Keep those bibles balanced, please. Now, not everybody loved trumps photo op. For instance, the bishop of st. Johns, marrian budde. She called into Anderson Cooper last night to express her feelings. The president just used a bible, the most sacred text of the judeochristian tradition, and one of the churches of my diocese without permission. As a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of jesus and everything that our churches stand for. And to do so, as you just said, he sanctioned the use of tear gas by Police Officers and riot gear to clear the church yard. I am outraged. Stephen shes right to be outraged. In fact, im sure the bishop wouldve tried to block trump but, unfortunately, she can only move diagonally. Stephen its not like trumps a church regular, as the bishop told cbs gayle king on cbs this morning this morning. Does President Trump go to that church, your church, on a regular basis . No, no. Hes rarely in church, and the only time hes been to st. Johns, to my knowledge, was on the morning of his inauguration. Stephen it was memorable, because trump described it as, the biggest crowd in church history. The most prayers, way more prayers than obama. And i ate all of the little crackers. Kind of dry. Couldve used some salsa. But i did like that statue of kid rock in a diaper doing that swan dive. Now, bishop budde was at home when trump pulled this p. R. Stunt, but members of st. Johns parish were present, including rectors and clergy, who throughout the day were outside the church handing out Water Bottles and granola bars to protesters and expressing solidarity with their cause. As one said, we were literally driven off the st. Johns Lafayette Square patio with tear gas and concussion grenades and police in full riot gear. Also, a visiting priest was sprayed with tear gas as she tried to help scared demonstrators leave the area. It reminds me of jesus stirring words in the beatitudes blessed are the peacemakers. And to protect them, could we get some u. N. Peacekeepers in here becau visit to the st. John paul ii national shrine, which got a harsh rebuke from washington archbishop wilton gregory, who released a statement saying, i find it baffling and reprehensible that any catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people, even those with whom we might disagree. Wow, that is the worst review of a religious event since my middle schools production of godspell. I forgot my lines and improvised. That night, jesus knew kung fu. Sorry judas, this time i win. The president wanted another religious photo op, but this time, instead of a bible, he brought melania. And when the photos began, trump seemed to tell the first lady to smile. Aw, religious ceremony, cameras, the pained look on her face its always so sweet to watch a couple reenact their wedding so trump wants to send the United States military in to your cities to stamp this down. And now you may be asking yourself, can he even do that . How come you never see the military keeping order in u. S. Streets . Thatsau is illega e seomitatus act of 1878 prohibits the domestic use of military for Law Enforcement purposes without specific congressional authorization. So, according to posse comitatus, trump needs consent from congress. Unfortunately, donald trump e. Ver asks before he grabs us by and, yesterday, trump held a phone call with the nations governors to threaten to help them. During the call, he unleashed u. S. Secretary of defense and neighbor who was always so quiet we never imagined what was in his basement, mark esper. Esper explained how the protests must be quelled. I think the sooner that you mass and dominate the battle space, the quicker this dissipates, and we can get back to the right normal. We need to dominate the battle space. Stephen let that sink in. The United States secretary of defense is calling the parking lot at the k. F. C. The battle space. Dont shoot hes not really a colonel its just jim gaffigan in a wig so the u. S. Military may soon be deployed against u. S. Citizens. Listen, mr. President , you dont want to launch a land invasion in america without a clear exit strategy. Thats a quagmire. Youll never quell the local people. Theyre too heavily armed. And the fact that youre president proves theyre not ready for democracy. Now, trumps idea of pitting the u. S. Military against u. S. Citizens has our neighbors to the north worried, because today, we heard from canadian Prime Minister and cover model for a romance novel called the lustful librarian, justin trudeau. During his daily press conference, trudeau was asked about the situation in the u. S. Youve been reluctant to comment on the words and actions of the u. S. President , but we do have donald trump now calling for military action against protesters. We saw protesters teargassed yesterday to make way for a president ial photo op. Id like to ask you what you think about that. And if you dont want to comment, what message do you think youre sending . Stephen thats a long t mustache. Xtrely real wa hror consternation whats going on in the United States. Stephen wow right now, canada is that guy who checks to see if the downstairs neighbor got eaten by his cats. He now hosts the cbs game show game on please welcome back to a late show, keeganmichael key. Keegan, thanks for being here. Hi, stephen, how are you buddy . Ble. U d i alady did is ywe did. We did. Stephen two weeks ago today, okay. And it was a lovely interview. It was. Stephen it was it was crisp. There were levels. But layers. Stephen a lot has happened in the last two weeks. Yes. Stephen and we both agreed that maybe it would be more appropriate if we just did it again. So thanks so much for being here. Thank you, buddy. I completely agree. I think it makes this was the best decision, yes, absolutely. Stephen well, a week ago, a little bit more than a week ago, george floyd was killed. Right. Stephen in minneapolis. Right. Stephen and i i dont know if you have watched the entire thing, but if you have watched it or any part of it, whats what is your and what was your and what is your ongoing reaction to what you saw . Um, i would say i think like many people, like many people, frustration and sadness and anger. But another interesting feeling thats come across me is exhaustion. Im feeling a lot of exhaustion, mostly because were dealing with a systemic issue here. And when i see that that was something that was filmed, what comes to mind is how many of these incidents do we not even know about . That happen every day, where there are no eyewitnesses, or people arent videotaping it . And so its it brings up the question over and over again what do we really do . Like, how can we really stop this . Because it is, its exhausting. Its exhausting. Stephen well, what do you make of what were seeing now . Well stephen the reaction to it, in all its different forms . I think that now you know, i think its interesting that were seeing a double phenomenon right now. Were seeing these peaceful protests, and were seeing people assemble they have the right to assemble. And then were seeing this other issue of people looting, this looting being mixed into the into the situation. And i think whats happening, really, what i make of it is that people are responding to a lot of issues right now, issues that have been simmering under the surface. And issues like the wage gap, the fact that theres this huge gap between the rich and the poor in our country and the haves and the havenots. And i think that something that that stems from is that theres i heard trevor noah say the other day, that when you live in a society, theres a contract, like an unspoken contract that everyone is living under, or supposedly so. That we all and in this country, the contract is called the american dream. And that were all supposed to be equal, and were all supposed to have the opportunity and the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. And theres a section of our population who is being told, oh, no, im sorry. That dream does not apply to you, does not apply to you. There are people who live you live in a community, the contract is the police are supposed to serve and protect, and that isnt happening, doesnt apply to you. So all of that frustration, i think, is bubbling over right now. And the manifestation of that frustration is the looting. Stephen the looting has to be separated from the protesting at the same time. 100 . Stephen because the protesting is seeking justice. 100 . There should definitely be a bifurcation, that there are there are a small amount of people that are actors out there, who are acting in what i think is not the most helpful way, and they should definitely be separated from the people who are letting their voices be heard and empowering themselves in a Truly American way, in a very intrinsically american way. And that is encouraging in a way to see and also to see people especially a lot of young people saying, i can enact my rights as a person who is allowed to speak up, in a nation where were allowed to speak up. I definitely want to make sure there is a clear delineation between these two groups of people. Stephen now, how has your experience been on americas racial divide, now that youre famous . Yes. Stephen because, you know, you are not an anonymous African American man. Youre keeganmichael key. Yeah, its interesting. I i when i think of that question it reminds me of a time not too long ago when i was driving a friend home, someplace in los angeles, and i was driving them home and we were parked outside of their house having a conversation. And a police car came down the street and went past us and i saw the driver look out of the window at the car and then drove past us, and they turned around and they pulled up next to the car in the street. And then i felt something i have felt a couple of times in my life, you know, my heart rate started to race a little bit. And then the Police Officer gets t of tnd he cos over hey vehicle, and hese, youre the guy. And i was like, yes, yes, i am the guy. And it was it was one of those experiences where i go, now why is that his response to seeing me . Why is that his response . What is it about being a person whos known . And what came to me was i dont know if youre familiar with the nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie . Stephen i am sad to say i am not. Shes a really brilliant author and she did a ted talk called the dangers of the single story. And she talks about people having a story that can encompass an entire theme or encompass an entire thing, so a story about literature, or a story about the entire continent of africa. But what happens is when you have an individual story about a person, i think it allows you to see them as human. And i think by being a person who is famous, when you watch a person in a movie or on a television show, you see them in a story. You feel like theyre struggling against things that youve struggled against. So you see them as a person, and i think that is an aspect of celebrity is that the Police Officer sees you as a person, whether youre black or hispanic or white. They see you as a person. And especially if your work has moved them in some way. And its completely different than it was when i was younger. Whats so interesting is the skin color goes away because theyre only seeing a human story. But theres some guilt that goes with that because, you know, things are different for me. Im the same guy. Im the same guy today that i was in 2004 that i was in 1998. So, you know, its thats been my experience. Theres this stark contrast from the way we are treated and the way somebody whose story you dont know is treated. Stephen keegan, we have to take a quick break. Its a cheetos thing. Stephen hey, everybody, were back with our friend keeganmichael key. Now, where in this moment do you choose to channel your energy and your efforts . Because people want to do something. Yeah. Stephen but part of the frustration is what do you do . What is appropriate to do, and what is fruitful to do . What what are you trying to do right now . You know, right now, what im what im trying to do is im trying to find what keeps coming to mind for me is that, as i mentioned before, the frustration that people are feeling, the anger people are feeling is the manifestation of a systemic problem. And and so im trying to figure out how do we deal how do we cut into the system . And the way i think we do that is by supporting organizations that do things like criminal Justice Reform and voter rights reform and voting reform, things that will actually where you can replace somebody with a person who wants to abide by the law or wants to use the law to ono tt tt the citizens of the american dream, is applying to everybody. So i think about organizations like r. F. K. Human rights or whenweallvote. Org. Theres a neat Organization Called run for something that helps support and helps support young people like young people in their 20s and 30s running for local office, which i think is going to be something thats very important very soon, that the downballot, the downballot candidates are just as important and essential to our livelihood and us enjoying it as the people at the top, you know, as the rock stars in the senate and the house and the presidency. Stephen sure. So i support ive been trying to put my energy toward those things. And then, also, the other thing ive been trying to put my energy toward, stephen, is how can we are there organizations that help us on what i would call the seed level or the source level . Are there organizations that help us like teaching children how toave selforth a self esteem so that they would never so that they get to a place where they know that they have a choice, and they have a choice other than im going to push somebody else down or oppress somebody else to make myself feel better. Can we just make them feel good in the first place . And then that way kids will be that theyll be growing up with that as an option in their lives. Theres something ive seen on social media recently thats been really really lovely and making my heart feel warm is theres a just a small video of a little white toddler and a little black toddler running toward each other and hugging. Stephen sure, i know that one. You know the one. Stephen i know that one, thats beautiful. I have it on a regular loop. Because im trying to im trying to infuse myself with images like that. And i want those two little boys to be friends for a long, long time. And so im also trying to find ways to put effort and energy into that, too. If we look inside ourselves and see our own value maybe that will help mitigate some of this. You know . Stephen well, you know, with coronavirus still raging. Yup. Stephen people at home frustrated, isolated, protests in the streets, the scourge of ongoing systemic racism, people still still keegan, they still need a break, you know, from their troubles. Often, like at 8 00 on wednesdays they need this break. Is there anything you might recommend them they watch . If they want they happen to be scrolling through the guide as theyre taking this break and theyre anywhere near cbs theres a little show called game on that they might want to watch. Stephen which has already premiered and done quite well, i understand. Done quite well. Last week, premiered, and won the day, had very good ratings. People might want to tune in, explore this wonderful challengebased show. Stephen its you and gronk and venus williams. Stephen venus williams. And the show has the show has two teams that are competing against each other. Its so its super fun, and everyone is having a great time. And just its a moment for a little bit of escapism if people want to do it. The show stephen i dont want to give anything away, but you flip a monster truck. I do flip a monster truck. I, yeah. Stephen and i think thats a metaphor for how all of us are feeling right now . Were upside down in a flipped monster truck and we just want somebody to come along and attach a backhoe to it and put it back on its feet. And put it right side up. Stephen keegan, thanks for being here man. Thank you, stephen. Stephen lovely to see you again, you beautiful, beautiful man. Look whos talking. Likewise. Nice to see you again. Its great to see yu again, stephen. Thanks so much for having me. Stephen ill start with the question im asking everybody right now. I mean, theres so much going on in the country between the coronavirus pandemic, protests in the streets. The, again, exposed raw nerve ad wound of the Racial Division in america. How are you doing . Hm. Um, thank you for the question. Uh, im frustrated. And i think there are people all over this country who look like me who are angry, who are grieving or scared, and, frankly, pretty exhausted. And exhausted because there is this thought and belief that the name that we are chanting and the name that you are hearing will be the impetus. That will be the name. That will be the one that you see real change until the next name happens. So i think for a lot of people theres a real level of frustration. Stephen were all pretty shocked by the president s indication that he wants to respond to the protests in the streets right now, and what he sees as violence or overreach by the protesters with military action to deploy the u. S. Military into our cities. As somebody who served in afghanistan, activeduty military, what do you think that means, that order would mean to the men and women who serve in our military . Yeah, i was i was, i was a captain and a paratrooper in afghanistan with the 82nd airborne division. Ive seen war, and we dont need war. We need community, and we need for everyone in this nation to do all that they can to be able to confront the real injustices and inequities that have plagued this country on the basis of race. And the problem is is that when you dress for conflict, sometimes that breeds conflict. You know, of all the turmoil that weve seen in the country that has taken place over the past week, two of the most peaceful places, two of the most productive protests we have had have actually been in newark, new jersey, and in flint, michigan. So these are two communities where the poverty is real. These are two communities where the neglect is real. But there was no rioting and no looting, and so people ask why . What did they have in common . Heres what they had in common. The Police Departments largely left their batons and their helmets and their shields at the police station. In fact, in flint, the sheriff said, were going to have a parade and not a protest. And so i share the calls for peace, but this collective effort that we are seeing happening all over is about justice. And peace will not come without justice, and justice cannot come from a tear gas canister or from the end of a baton. Stephen what does that lead to . I guess im asking some people might say, why not do that . What is the down side to sending in, you know, what the president might describe as the hammer . Yeah i think because when something or someone thinks that the hammer is coming, its going to escalate tension. You know, when we continue to militarize and up the militarization of what were talking about, we cant expect the protesters or the activists to then just simply cow down. Thats not whats going to happen in this situation. Ane and also a very unfair ask weinto ask to do this. I remember what that was like, going into communities that i was not familiar with, going into places that i didnt i wasnt familiar with the history of the contempt. You know, walking into places wheres there was this idea simply because i was walking in i was walking in with a flack vest and kevlar and m4 asking tecesrily wor so there are real legal restrictions as to the police function that the military can perform on u. S. Soil, one. But, also, we are, once again, asking our military personnel to perform an Impossible Task in a way that is unfair to them. And, frankly, is not going to accomplish what it is that were hoping to accomplish from all that. Stephen the last time that you and i spoke was on the release of your book the other wes moore. The new book is five days, which is about the freddie gray protests in baltimore after he was killed at the hands of the police in 2015. Whats the biggest takeaway from those protests that you learned that could be applied to this moment . Well, one, i think there are so many similarities. I remember even just writing five days and going over these eight people that we followed over this fiveday period that all took place around the funeral for freddie gray and the unrest and uprising that took place around it. We are literally reliving history right now watching how similar all of this stuff is. But i think there were a couple of really big takeaways that i took from that, that actually im thinking of applying to whats happening right now. You know, one was the thing that really helped to bring the temperature down in baltimore that ended a lot of the protesting, that brought things to a to a calm was actually when charges were brought. When the states attorney at the time, the states attorney Marilyn Mosley brought charges against the six officers, that actually brought everything down. Because i think people felt, that there was going to be that justice had arrived. I remember that day when she announced the charges, there was almost a celebratory, euphoria involved. Because there was this idea that accountability could happen. Whats interesting about this one, charges were brought relatively quickly on the one officer over in minnesota, over in minneapolis. And it didnt there was no dissipation when it came to the intensity of the protests. Some people say, whats the difference . And i think for part of it is that for protests and activists right now the answer is is that charges arent enough. Now, what does that mean in terms of what we can do now is we still have to go through our normal process. There will be trials, and, you know, i know for many of us that were hoping that both with the trials that are the charges have been announced but also there will be more charges that will be coming that we can come to a conclusion that will actually mean justice. But i think the thing many of our elected officials can do right now our governors, our mayors is to say even if its not about this one case still has to go through the court of law. We understand that. However, justice of all forms, justice in the way that were thinking about police reform, justice in the way were thinking about economic justice, in social justice, those are things that can happen right now. Those are things that do not o wait for a trialthose are thit need to wait for future indictments to come down. And so those are things that we practically can get done right now that can truly bring a level of calm so we can begin the process of both healing and moving forward better. Stephen as the c. E. O. Of the Robin Hood Foundation in new york city, you you spend your time working to reduce poverty and the effects of poverty in the city. Cities all over the United States are being affected by covid19 at a much more devastating scale than the more rural, suburban populations of the United States. What do you think, when this is over, this is going to mean to our cities who have been affected with so much illness and, sadly, death, because of covid19 . How do you think its going to change our cities . Yeah. Well, you know, i think one thing thats important for us to understand is how covid has hit people in the cities. While its hit everyone in the cities, it has not hit everybody equally. And i think thats also going to help to lend and frame up about what we think about the future of our cities. Because weve seen disparities in health that have been allowed to exist far too long and have not just revealed themselves but also been exacerbated. You know, black and brown communities are dying at twice the rate from covid19, and thats really because weve allowed it. And i think about it where, even in my own case and why this is a very personal thing for me, you know, my father, died when i was three years old from a treatable virus because the hospital sent him home and asked my mother if he was prone to exaggerations. His clothes were a little bit too haggard. His mustache was a little bit too unkempt. There was an assumption that he didnt have insurance. And so, whats happening right now and when youre looking at the disparities in the way that covid19 is impacting communities, both on the health side and also on an economic side, its staggering. You know, consider the fact that, you know, over 40 of people in this country couldnt afford a 400 shot. And that was prior to covid19. 22 of people who have lost their jobs since covid19 were people who were living in poverty before i. E. , these were people who were working and still living in poverty, the working poor. And so when i think about the way we have to rethink our cities and rethink the way that we live, we have to make sure that people have a firm enough support system that when the singular individual shocks happen many that theyre not responsible for at all that there actually is a way to support them, that we can make sure we are not having people working a full days work and still living below the poverty line. That we can make sure that we have a Healthcare System that does not leave people uncovered, and particularly one that relies solely on unemployment. Because when you have jumps in unemployment, what is also now happening is you have jumps in people who are uninsured. And so we this actually creates an opportunity for us to rethink this, rethink the way were going to structure our societies, our cities, start thinking about our transportation assets, moving people around in a safe way. But ptw and think about what how are we going to view the next three and the five and the next 10 years for our existence. Stephen well, wes, thanks so much for being here. Its a movement started by two black music executives who decided this moment in history was too important to continue with business as usual. These women asked individuals in the Music Industry to take the day off, to disconnect from work and reconnect with their communities. The response has been overwhelming, with record labels, recording studios, and artists all stopping the music for the day to focus on confronting systemic racism and inequality. Thats why jon batiste and the band are not here tonight. Normally, in this part of our show, we have a musical guest. But tonight, in honor of o ve aoment of silence to pause and to reflect.
