Now to our fire watch where several brush fires are flurrying around the bay area now. The one in butte has prompted some evacuations. The biggest one in Calaveras County burning at 1100 acres. Damaged two structures so far. Lets get to our chief meteorologist paul heggen with our fire conditions. This was a little bit predicted. We knew there would be an up tick in a lack of humidity, paul. A little bit of breeze out there in the valley. Playing tout way we thought, huh . Pretty much. Fortunately, didnt see too many fires popping up around the bay area itself. There were a couple here and there. The breeze was actually weaker than it was yesterday. The difference is the higher temperatures well into the 80s. A lot of spots hitting 90 degrees. The relative humidity which depends on moisture and the temperature was very low. Lower than 10 for parts of the afternoon. And it is going to be hotter tomorrow. The red flag warning for Solano County continues until 1 00 tomorrow afternoon. At that point, the wind is going to die down enough that the fire weather conditions are not going to be as favorable for anything to rapidly spread. We are in the time of year when we dont get any rain. So any spark can quickly cause a fire. Well talk about what is going to happen as we head there the rest of week and fathers day weekend in a few minutes. A disconcerning scene at a popular east bay park. At least one noose and several ropes were found swinging from several trees at oaklands lake merritt. Andria borba is live in oakland and tells us the fbi has been notified. Reporter these roping were found and posted to social media yesterday afternoon. We do have some video to show you. We will pull that upright now. This is snap chat video showing five ropes with nooses hanging from trees in lake merritt tuesday afternoon. Oakland parks an rec has removed the ropes but the case has been handed over to opd and the fbi to look at as a possible hate crime. Initial information came in that this was exercise equipment. Some of it may have been, but some of it absolutely was not. And oakland city parks doesnt tolerate hate. It is incumbent on all of us to know the actual history of racial violence. Of terrorism that a noose represents. And that we as a city must remove these terrorizing symbols from the public view. And investigate these as hate crimes until proven otherwise. Reporter opd interviewed the person who installed the reopenings and said they were put there as exercise equipment months ago. Libby schaaf says intentions do not matter in this case when it comes to the feelings of the community here in oakland who have been terrorized quite some time. The tensions will matter when it comes to prosecution, but not to the feelings of this community. Live at lake merritt, andria borba, kpix5. Santa cruz county sheriffs sergeant who was shot and killed in an ambush was remembered today. Thousands of Law Enforcement officers joined friends and family to remember Sergeant Damon gutzwiller. Kpix5s len ramirez joins us live where the memorial was held. Len . Reporter thats right. This memorial was held in the outdoor stadium here in fact. The Santa Cruz County sheriff had to ask the Governors Office for permission to hold this outdoor ceremony. As you say, a lot of friends and families came here to pay tribute to the fallen Deputy Sheriff. Officers came from around the state and Police Supporters came from around the county. All to pay tribute to sheriff Sergeant Damon gutzwiller. It is senseless and sad. So i rode my bike over just to pay respect. Reporter sheriff jim hart called gutzwiller a dedicated Public Servant and a role model. Damon loved this community. He gave too much. If we follow his example, the world will see the best of us. Reporter gutzwiller was ambushed in the Santa Cruz Mountains by a man with assault rifles and homemade bombs. Citizens tackled the suspect when he tried to carjack a get away car. Camp fire victims and their loved ones sharing harrowing stories in the sentencing period of pg e. They urged the judge to give the maximum penalty for sparking the states deadliest wild fire. One woman said her motherin law died in her car trying to escape the flames. There needs to be clarity in this process to implement change to make sure these catastrophes dont happen again. Without it, my mother and the 83 other victims of the camp fire died for nothing. Yesterday, pg e pleaded guilty to 84 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter for sparking the campfire with faulty equipment. The sentencing hearing was continued until tomorrow. As we find ourselves back in red flag territory, pg e is closing in on a solution for power shutoffs. At least here in one community. How it works, and what it will take to do this across more of california. Plus, warm weather is drawing more people to the ocean to cool off. Survival tips on what to do if caught in a rip current. And, Tourist Attractions in the bay area slowly coming back to life. How pier 39 is going with wild fire season under way, planned power shutoffs are planned to return. But one Community Hopes their new micro grid will be a bright spot in the darkness. Wilson walker is live with a look a the project. Reporter liz, you have to go back a couple of disasters now, but think back to the end of last year, the series of power shutdowns across california. One of the great frustrations is that people who were not necessarily in harms way found themselves in the dark while pg e is working on a solution for that. Enter the micro grid. We are makeing the area resilient. You see some of the volts here. Reporter it does not look at all like a substation, but this is the foundation of the calistoga micro grid. Most of the equipment will be underground. The generators will sit above the vaults on trailers sending power through a new set of lines downtown. The goal is to keep main street powered up and the businesses and the customers not in immediate fire threats have them remain energized. Its great for the downtown section if you live east of the river but it is unfortunate for the other twothirds of the population here. They will not have power. Reporter calistoga itself is not a high risk area for hire, but it is surrounded by high risk. Thus, it has landed squarely in the middle of many pg e power shutoffs. When we have a blackout like this, it impacts the seniors so badly. That is our goal this year is to reduce the impacts by one third. Onethird fewer customers affected compared to last year. Reporter that, of course, is just one of the challenges facing pg e and a system that stretches across california. Well, lets just hope that pg e is able to figure out what to do in the country side so the fire wont start in the first place. Reporter all right, so they have one of these completed. They have four more under construction with the goal of getting ten completed by the end of the year, this one will only power about 800 customers in the calistoga area. It really is just the central part of town. They are hoping to expand that. But again, getting back to the size of the pg e operation. 800 customers at a time. It is a small start. We are live in calistoga. Wilson walker, kpix5. As temperatures heat up, more people are headed to the coast. But a Beautiful Day at the beach can quickly turn tragic. Kpix5 reporter kenny choi is also an accomplished surfer and he shows us what to do if you are caught in one of these rip currents. Reporter we are at ocean beach right now. One of the most dangerous places in northern california. Thats because, you cant see the rip currents that are so strong. One of the common mistakes people make is to swim right back to shore when they are in that current. But, no matter how strong of a swimmer you are, you are eventually going to lose. Instead, if you are caught up in a current this summer, what you want to do is swim parallel to the shoreline. Until you are out of that current. And then, use the gentle waves to make your way. An they will push you right back to shore. Yep. Thats the way to do it, paul. We were taught that as kids out at ocean beach. Never swim back in. Always swim parallel. And the waves will push you back in. Just relax. And look for the telltale sign of the water changing color. People will be tempted to head out to the beach the next several days with hot temperatures building. Especially inland. The heat dome influencing our weather. Looking ahead to fathers day, it will still be hot inland, but there will be a wide variety of temperatures. It will not be that strong on fathers day. Inland spots make it to the low 90s. Along the coast an bay, temperatures in the 60s and 70s. That will be the pattern this weekend and through most of next week. Every once in a while, the breeze gets a little stronger dropping inland spots to the upper 80s. Thats about the best we can do. Make sure the air conditioner is functioning. Always a good thing. Thank you paul. Still ahead, uc berkeleys plan t were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off.
