Officers. Current ownership of the order includes about 5800 dominican friars. Including 4300 priest. Inreatnshi e order has an archoce n fransco. In fact, the dominicans were here before the archdiocese was. The original arch was a priest. Today the priest serving in the bay area. We have learned about the history here. And much much more. So after this brief break, please rejoin us and meet the dominicans. This crisis has changed almost everything, but not our resolve. Weve pulled together, worked hard to keep each other safe. Dget back on their feet. Mu. S for our families and our communities, lets stay the course and stop the spread. Hello. Welcome to mosaic. Let me introduce you to two dominican peers. The redheaded man is Michael Curley. The pastor of Saint Dominics paris San Francisco. Next to him father james lord. Opie after each name. Lets not forget that. Your call to victor for advancement of the western prophets. Yes. Very good. Both local guides from the farming valley. From pacific. The beautiful western coast. So, growing up in the bay area you try dominicans in the western province. So as i mentioned, the history of the dominicans is about the archdiocese. So tell me about that. The one the dominicans came to california, they wanted to come where the action was. The book said to dominicans who have known each other from the eastern province. They were working together, he sent one who is the bishop. Bishop allen may need to start the diocese here. It also sent the person to dominican. So while he created the diocese the archdiocese of San Francisco, he said i want to go to the capital. I want to go where the action is. At that time in california, what you had is is in a place called phoenicia california. It was the government. It was the capital of california. It was also the portal to the gold rush. This was the 1850s. 1853. Lots of gold coming. Was a better natural bay than ever on pay here. So all of the shipping and everything was coming. All the gold miners would go. They came in and had tons of gold. Also, you had guns. Because the heart rate which exist today, most of the things remade for the first world war, were made from the west coast were made there and it phoenicia. The dominicans look and they said you have government . You have got gold. You have guns. Lets bring god. So it is the original 4g network. You have got that sense of bringing god to place we had all this interaction. The seat of the archdiocese in San Francisco. Thats right. Sco in1853. Se original dan meop, semon. We are beenthe missionary ar Mission Terrace territory. There are hundreds and thousands of new population in the San Francisco bay area. Exactly. The dominicans were founded 800 years ago. We were just continuing our mission by coming here. And founded as an order of preachers. Preachers to come but error. To combat heresy. Also to live in the faith and to bring the 50 people especially where the gospels were either not preached well or were not preached at all. Its an interesting name. Order preachers. On the website which we will show later, theres a Big Red Button who says request the x ray. Wasnt sure exactly what would understand tom experience as dominicarsuasi ap faith. Convinces about the important of truth and gods presence. Absolutely. One of the things a dominic that is when he founded the order, he set up that he would have not only that we would be active preachers, but also contemporary. We would live in small monasteries. And we would pray. Contemplate beauty and truth. Gets others, the fruits of our contemplation so desperately needed in these busy and crazy times. You have been in the archdiocese for 100 and whatever it is now. 50 or 60 years from the beginning. There is one parish of dominicans in the archdiocese. Saint dominic stritch. What you as a vector for advancement from the western province, epic is a western province. The western dominican province is basically all the west coast of california. Then i goes as far east as utah. As far south as tucson. Right across the border and mexicali. As far north as alaska where we actually have a new house in alaska in anchorage. We serve the people of parish there in anchorage and also got an act as missionaries throughout the great state of alaska. By the way with archbishop alamein he was dominicans sister , right . Yeah. The wonderful thing about the dominican order is it is not just the race for the friars preaching. Saint dominic knew that in order to likely change culture or bring back to culture and enlightenment, you needed a strong component of women. Contemplative nuns. Even before he formerly founds the order preachers, he founds the nonce first and said there is no place. I visited the little monastery now that has been both inchoate. You have contemplative nuns living there actually from all over the world. It was actually for me personally attracted to the order. It wasnt simply a group of guys getting together to preach. It was together. We are if you will going to preach. Behind us and supporting ranuns contemplative nuns offer prayer. The active sisters offer healthcare and medical care. Helping families in need. There was lot of disease endorphins in San Francisco in the early days. They answered this call. Hooking with archbishop kaylme shwas the founder for dominican sisters. Dominican college up in centerville. There are still contemporary nuns and active sisters today. Monastery of, i am not sure what the monastery is. Father michael actually, he e ations in the entire dominican order throughout the world actually. Which is, when the master of the order came to visit he noticed or he mentioned to me when i mentioned my sister who was a contemporary dominican who lived in virginia. That was the only brother and sister that we are both biologically collect it but also connect especially through the order. Its nice to know. Lets take a brief break. We will talk some more about the dominicans finding out what the mission and history are. Sin history and projects in San Francisco. My guest, father james moore. Victor for investment. Father Michael Curley pastor of Saint Dominic stritch. Now i want to get to this point. Which is the dominicans are a Mission Order preaching and persuading. Preaching the gospel. I grew up in the east bay at the tail end of the michigan eric of the irish priest. It seems to me we are living in postchristian society. Postchristian world. The secularized world. Are we in you christian territory . Is this your work . Absolutely. When you look at our culture, there are lots of things of the culture proposes and ways for happiness. We see happiness and possessions and what we can get. San francisco is outrageous. Friends and families cannot live here. Children are not on here. Good or sense of pleasure. A sense of power in Silicon Valley and all this kind of technology. We are living in a time where technologically and perhaps in terms of business and economic is booming. Then there is this deep spiritual lack or absence. Culture doesnt have a real response. Response to how is that . The hearts are restless. How do we address that . As preachers preaching the truth. Contemplating and getting the fruits of our contemplation. We feel the gift of the gospel truth. We want to share with that to fill gods love. That absence that we are all searching for. The challenge that i think we face. Even priest have almost 12 years. 11 years. 10 years ago i found the bi challerweyou say i am itual bus. Yearslatewe fiing especialthne after the millennials generation z, they are seeing more i am rather spiritual or religious. There is this great kind of angst that there is nothing there. So philosophically there is this huge hole. Maybe got exist , but he has no relevance on my daytoday life. And it is a real real big problems have. We have to know that this is the territory we are going into. Do you think there has been an error like this before . Where god did not matter to the Daily Culture . I think if you look your certain history these things kind of happen in cycles. In terms of losing it. Cultures tend to diminish when they are cut off from their spiritual roots so to speak. At every age, Saint Dominic in fact i think his age and our age has several parallel connections. You have people that would say even that they have a spiritual tendencies, or they want to be good people or can recognize virtue. Yet, they would project the institutional church. They would see the church as they would somehow fording her barrier to god. As dominicans, we see that gods love as always if you will incarnational. That god created everything. Creates not just a kind of spiritual relationship, but works to the body. God became man. He then sets of the cycles followers. We see ourselves very much continuing that act of command to go and preach the gospel. The last thing he says is go preach. We take that seriously. That is your last will and testament. We take that to heart. We are the only group that is named after who founded us. We are not west d or Saint Dominic. The only order that is named for what we do. Op order of preachers. As he said in the beginning. You got your latin. Yes. I tried to. I know you did. It seems to me the culture today as we can families. Weakened the community. Most our culture and yet everyone is living with his own preferences with his ipad and missing technology. Where do we find community . You cannot have a real relationship with an instagram account. It cannot love you back. Have you tried . [ laughter ] father michael and i have been friends for too long. With young people, you dont run schools for the most part. Your preachers and brothers. But you do to college trackings . Yes. A lot of what we do is, we set up centers next to secondary universities. For instance, for two years i was the chapel at the university in tunis tucson. It is a school. We have a number of these throughout the west coast and stanford. We have one at unlv. When it university of utah. University of washington. We do a lot of this especially with collegeage students. I have been blessed through most my recent to be working with other people. Is interesting. I wife is a college teacher. She is dealing with 18 and 19 yearold mines. I have no idea. So how are the kids doing . At Saint Dominics, one of our wonderful ministries is that we have the young adult, strong young adult presence. I heard that. Our mailing list. Hundreds and thousands every week. Gather once a week for the consistency of adults were catholic to know that you are not alone. Most folks were catholic in the city feel like they are cut off not just from others. They are cut off from others that really believe. So that ministry is really getting together and allowing people were young to get permission to each other. I can live my faith in a time where politically or religiously so many things are dividing us. They prayed together. They and a sense help each other. They also reform together. This particular past things they have done is host this one, this plate. We had for the parish. They seek to bring the parish together as well. So they are just very eager to live their faith. But they also seek permission. There has to be social life. Talking about with people feeling disconnected. You cannot have a relationship with the minister. People come that are lonely. They are new to the city. They might know that they are catholic. Sometimes they are more robust catholic. Sometimes less. But they know theres a group of people in Saint Dominics. They shopped there. All of a sudden they are formed together. Its incredible. Lets take a brief break. We will come back and talk more with our dominican fathers. Guess what i learned today. Whats that sweetie . How to count to twenty. Maybe i can teach you, because that handwashing was ten seconds, at best. Hello and welcome back. Were talking about the dominican order and their local activities. I want to rent two slides now and let them linger on the screen for many. First, slight number when here we go. This is the website of the western dominican province. This is the province for which mother james is the victor for advancement. If you take a look at this, you will see every kind of resource we are finding out about. The dominicans and what they do. A little pitcher here of some gentleman who looked very much like our guest today. Wonderful website. Easy to find. Slight number two then is from the church in San Francisco that is the parish of which mother michael is the pastor. It looks like the guys from abby road are crossing. This is the most beautiful catholic website you will ever see. By the way, two beautiful churches in San Francisco i would say. So take a look. Gentlemen, lets talk about this. Because i have i think any catholic who lives around herei then he hr about, you get the news from the dominicans oh, we have 20 new locations is here. I am thinking, the dominicans seem to be doing something right. Tell me whats going on. First of all there is success in our ministry sites. Push in place of the conventional wisdom says San Francisco is a presecondary city. We have got the plastic church. Sain anchorage. Same thing in logic los angeles. Then at our University Centers next to the universities. Our ministries are pushing. Then it is also reflective of the fact that men are showing up. We are growing. Audible. Talk about the present shortage. All of the bad news with the church surrounding priesthood. There is lot of good news here. Being upationumbers a ct doubling and going up in this way. It is a long course of discernment and vocation training. Thats right. You were ordaining them. We are. Our retention rate is much higher than it has been and i think since the week. I think our rates are the highest amount they have been since. So thanks to god. I have this impression. Part of your procedures to live in community. So that it is not the parish. You have the community of men. You have i dont know, a support system. Both father michael and i are from very strong families. One of the reasons i wanted to join in order that had community is because i wanted a family. Certainly is working from us. Exactly. Icyou are runninbig city parish. It seems to be i am saying emma there is no children here. The young generation cannot afford to live here. You are saying we have a Thriving Youth population. We do. Part of it comes from what we call the pillars of the dominican order. There are four pillars. First, we pray together. Right now our novices. They meet novices. There are almost 29 living together. In various ministries. That is open to the public. You can come and pray early in the morning for our morning peers. People when they see this group gathered in prayer, they see tears happening. How do i become a part of that . We study together. So there is a sense in which there is one person who will preach the weekend. But all the pages gathered together . You talk about the gospel. We reflect on the gospel. Is there an ancient kind of practice to dig into it. Then one of us then preach the gospel. But it is as if the whole community has stopped reflecting and now we are preaching together. We lived together. So we prepare meals together. We together. I would say, one of the most attractive aspect ever parish is not simply that there is sacraments going on. But that the quality of the sacraments, the availability of the sacraments, if you will the joy of the sacraments. The Dominican Community of San Francisco. What a pleasure to be there. Its beautiful. Pitiful music. Your communication that was a part of your modern preaching is wonderful. It seems to me. We got a minute and a half left. Take some time. What message do you want to leave to catholic viewers and noncatholic years as well . Live your faith boldly but with joy. We need to be bold but our faith but also people should see that we are different. That we are happy because we are the gospel. Jesus is and what his misuse i have come that my joy might be in you and that your joy might be quick sleep. Might be full. Our vision at Saint Dominics is two ready the joy of the gospel. In San Francisco in the heart of the city, when youre joyful. One of those things is the joyful fire. The joy is contagious. A light. That fire. It spreads without being diminished. So too, we make the boldest witness we can. We are simply joyful and living as catholics. Yeah. If a catholic wants to have a great mass. And intellectual experience you will see kind of dominican church. The preaching will be good. There is something good happening in the parish. There will be good news and all that kind of stuff. There is no question with people. By the way, Saint Dominics famous for the road. We got here. The blessings of virgin mary. Thank you very much for being here. Thank you for telling us all about the dominicans and the archdiocese of San Francisco. We will see you next time. Says that beauty dies after getting ambushed in the mountains. What we are learning about the incident that left the second deputy wounded. And, they threatened dozens of homes. This looming evacuation orders e stilin effect. And an unusual protest in the east bay. This is a funeral procession. It is 6 am on the sunday morning. Thank you for joining us. Derek jones is with a quick look at our weekend forecast
