Weve been monitoring a large, loud, boisterous, yet peaceful demonstration as it makes its way through the streets of San Francisco. Lets take a look from up above chopper 5. This is a crowd of about thousands. They started at city hall, roughly 3 00 with a few hundred. Now it has grown exponentially. These folks are protesting the death of george floyd, one of many demonstrations around the country. Demonstrating against the death of a man at the hands of a Police Officer. Weve watched as just in the last hour, this crowd branched off in two different directions. One went toward the bay bridge. The other toward the hall of justice. One young demonstrator said he recognizes even gathering in this crowd presents a risk to him. Were all risking something by being here. You see, like, how armed the police here are and we know that covid19 is still happening and this really increases the risk something might go down. To see everybody in support for the injustices we face every day of our lives, its really moving and really powerful. Just within the hour, one of those branches went toward the hall of justice. They were repelled by a great number of Police Officers standing their ground. The hall of justice used to be the police headquarters. Its since moved from there. The court system and district attorneys office, some of the officers are still in the building. Protesters turned back around. They then merged with that other group that was trying to get on the bay bridge and were turned away there. Now we understand theyre making their way through lower Market Street, went by the sales force tower. Theres some vandalism taking place in that area as we speak. 5. Ll continue to monitor theev, expected tomorrow gnorso the demonstrations across the state. That will be livestreamed at noon and well have the latest on cbsn bay area. A protest started about 2 00 in the afternoon. We can see a steady stream of cars and cyclists head into city streets near west oakland. The cars had signs on them in addition to outrage over the death of george floyd. The protest also focused on killings of steven taylor, Rihanna Taylor and steven grant. Because of george floyd, because of Rihanna Taylor, because, because, because, because. This isnt a minneapolis problem. This isnt an oakland problem. This is america problem. I dont want my children to fit the profile, fitdescriptiont theyre looking for. Just because theyre brown, i dont want them to be attacked. Traffic was brought to a standstill at the bay bridge toll plaza earlier this afternoon but since then it has cleared up. Some of you weighing in online on the caravan protests. There is work thats been going on all day long as these retailers have been boarding up storefronts trying to salvage what still remains after the protest of George Floyds death got coopted as night fell by people bent on destruction. The sunday morning era in union square was punctuated by drills, hammers, and saws. As the citys retail gold coast transformed into a plywood jungle after a night of looting. What began as peaceful protest at civic center and un plaza devolved as night fell. Swarovski completed cleaned out. Shattered glass. I was extremely upset because unfortunately with some of the vandals, they thought this was a game. They thought this was funny. And this is not funny. To damage property, to set fires that could lead to someone elses death . Reporter there were 10 felony arrests for looting and many more detained according to chief william scott. People were deliberately starting fires, throwing molotov cocktails at officers, throwing molotov cocktails at businesses. Locally owned west coast leathers does not. The amount is unbelievable. The front of the store is completely emptied. The middle of the store is partially emptied. The downstairs through the garage somehow they got. Hope was just beginning to build about reopening. The store inventory, destroyed the shop. We were hoping on monday. All retail closed have been closed since march 17th which has been painful. We were hoping to open up on monday. Obviously that plan is not going to work. Now the damage continued on to Market Street and even at one point inside the westfield maul on Market Street. Mayor london breed says she will not accept and tolerate this tonight, imposing that 8 00 p. M. Curfew for the city and county of San Francisco. Live in union square, andria borba, kpix 5. Volunteers gathered in emeryville today to clean up after the looting last night. A number of businesses were damaged. There was shattered windows, stolen merchandise. Volunteers arrived with brooms to help clean up the damage left behind by the looters. Some who wanted to help also drove down from richmond. This right here is starting to get sad. If youre just going to watch, if youre just going to be at home, if youre just going to get out of your car to see a place you shop at torn to pieces and you know you got a broom, you know you can help, two able bodied hands, you got a mask, go it start with peaceful protests yesterday but later turned destructive and chaotic. When night fell, the area was strewn with broken glass, water bottles, trash, and other debris. Meanwhile, an act of kindness in between the protests. Take a look at a family from emeryville handing out pizza for the oakland officers to express their gratitude and thank them for their hard work. Target is temporarily closing some of its Stores Including here in the bay area because of the protests. The retailer is based in minneapolis and many of their stores have been vandalized during the demonstrations. The Company Released a statement saying the safety of their staff and customers t py. T check the Bay Area Stores that will be impacted includes San Francisco, berkeley, oakland, san jose, and redwood city. We want to show you video of Police Outside the target in vallejo. We now know the name of the Security Guard shot and killed outside the Federal Building in oakland two nights ago. The fbi has identified him as 53yearold dave patrick underwood, one of two men hired as Contract Security officers for the department of homeland security. Investigators say someone pulled up to the building on clay street at 9 45 friday night and opened fire. Killing underwood and wounding a second guard. Dhs was quick to describe the attack in the most severe terms. When someone targets a Police Officer or Police Station with an intention to do harm or intimidate, thats an act of domestic terrorism. The fbi is working with fd te gunman. Theyre asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to come forward. Tips can be anonymous. Within the past hour, san jose has announced a curfew as well. Floyds death rings a more horrible and devastating echo ec of eric garner, too many black men who have lost their lives at the hands of police who have lost their way in cities throughout the country. I took a knee with protesters to express my solidarity with them. I feel fortunate and blessed to live in san jose. We have a department so deeply committed to ensuring constitutional and fair and just policing. We have, however, seen episodes of violent conduct, ranging from the horrific as we saw with the woman who drove her suv to the crowd entering two bystanders. Three other officers involved have not. If it was anyone else, theyd bring them to justice today. If it was anybody else, justice would be delivered. Looking at monday bay areawide, thats pretty close to average. What i want to show you how noticeably different this man is going to look when we switch it from monday into tuesday. Its color coded. Im going to hit the button and watch the difference. And in case you cant remember what your number was on monday, and how much warmer these are, ill do the math for you. When we hit that 88 in fremont on tuesday, that not only gets us about 10 degrees above average but it also means a big jump in just 24 hours. So theres your difference. Tuesday is the day where we stay for two days. And by next weekend the temperatures are going to be right back down to average. A little below if we look at the map for the possibility for accumulating rainfall, this looks at next weekend into tuesday.
