We are just here to voice our opinions and support the black lives matter movement. Thats all we care about. Reporter why this location . This location because this is the sheriffs office. We can make a difference here. Theyll listen, hopefully. Reporter this substation is also located next to freeway 580. Youre looking at chp officers guarding that onramp. That is the onramp to westbound 580. The big concern is that the protesters could get on the freeway and try to block off traffic. And thats why those deputies are there. But again, these proteers here saying that their intention is to stay peaceful, juliette . Brian . Seems peaceful. Obviously last night that wasnt the case. You were in the middle of it all, im curious how many Alameda County sheriffs deputies were injured last night . Reporter yeah, according to the spokesperson two deputies were reinforcement, in addition of course, to the Oakland Police department. Two deputies got hurt according to the spokesperson. They got firebombed by a molotov cocktail. Someone threw that at the deputies. One actually was hospitalized with burns through his body. But he apparently is recovering today. All right, da lin, da, thank you. Now to San Francisco where a group of protesters have gathered outside a Police Station in the Mission Holding signs and chanting. They spent the last several hours locked in a moving standoff with officers over access to the bay bridge. But for the most part, that has been peaceful. The lone moment of violence so far came as protesters smashed out the back win boy of a departing police cruiser. Theyve been on the move for hours walking from onramp to onramp, preseembly trying to get on the bay bridge. A much larger group gathered in front of San Francisco city hall to denounce the killing of africanamericans at the hands of police. Kpix 5s john ramos was there and he tells us that for many any hope of change lies in the hearts and minds of White Americans. Reporter the message here, of course, is black lives matter, but for that to happen, people here say its going the take white voices. They feel angry when we gather, when we march, when we protest peacefully or not. They feel that angry, but one thing that they will never fear is the fear of being born with a target on your back. Reporter the crowd gathered at San Franciscos United Nations plaza. The killing of george floyd is only the latest, but one by one, the deaths of black people at the hands of police have had their effect. We dont forget. Were always remembering. Were always on edge. As a black man, im always on edge every time i get pulled over. I think this could be, i dont know whos pulling me over, this could be my last night. Reporter but look out at the crowd and youre struck by a curious fact, most of the protesters today were white. And while it may be true that they cannot understand what it feels like to be black, a man named mark says they actually hold the key to genuine change. Thats going to be the difference, is the white voice. It really is. Theyre not going to pay black peoples voices any mind. They dont. Its that crowd right there, okay, White America that makes a difference, because its starting to hit home to them. Reporter but as the group took to the streets for a march to city hall, frank perry was worried as he watched workers board up the windows of his building. I can understand their anger about it, but it gets to a point where it goes beyond that and other people suffer as well. Reporter the death of george floyd has highlighted the vicious cycle of Race Relations in america. Black people rebel because of how theyre treated and police rack down on them for being rebellious. But those are both causes of the same root. Its the same root. And its gist like a way that we can start hitting ourselves, blame ourselves for whats being done to us. Reporter it is a cycle that can only be broken when white people, who may not approve of racial injustice, are willing to stop accepting it as an unfortunate fact of life. I think we need to just come together and white people need to start taking responsibility. We cant just be like, oh, im against this but not really take any action. Reporter in San Francisco, john ramos, kpix 5. To oakland now where several businesses spent the day cleaning up after last nights silent protests. At least 22 people were arrested. 60 others detained on suspicion of looting. A total of 13 Law Enforcement officers were hurt. Six are Oakland Police officers, the other seven were from other agencies, including several member of the u. S. Secret service. They threw rocks. They threw urine and they threw alcohol at our officers. And in several instances, our officers incurred injuries to include broken bones. Oakland mayor libby schaaf denounced the violence in a video message this morning. Blackowned businesses downtown, businesses in our chinatown were vandalized last night. Fires were set. Further compromising the health of our already scared and vulnerable populations. This is not who we are. Kpix 5s devin fehely spoke with Business Owners in oakland who say they understand the protesters frustrations, but targeting the community is the wrong way to go about venting them. Oakland Business Owners are cleaning up and bracing for what could be another night of unrest. Its a feeling of violation, you know . You feel violated and, of course, with all thats going on right now, its already a very emotional time. Reporter taylors Clothing Store in oakland became a canvas for the angry protests overnight in oakland. The front facade was spray painted with antipolice slogans. We put signs up on our window that says we are black owned. I know theres no way that the protesters that are fighting four rights and justice would violate and vandalize a business as such. Reporter taylor says she believes the angry and destructive mob that terrorized oaklands Business Community overnight was distinct from the Peaceful Protesters that began the evening. The peaceful part in the beginning were the people speaking against the injustices in a peaceful, calm way. Then when the night fell there was a whole other group that came and were literally breaking buildings and Business Owners watched and witnessed and filmed them doing this. Reporter regardless of whos responsible, the group left a trail of destruction in its wake. Broken glass, looted store fronts, and the looming threat that it could all happen yet again. Several Business Owners who did not board up their businesses before are going to do that tonight in hopes that that might just be a deterrent to further vandalism and property damage. In oakland, devin fehely, kpix 5. The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of commerce released a statement saying oakland is a strong and resilient city. Our residents protested in peace, we will not let out of town individuals undermine this legitimate protest and destroy our local economy. Plywood has also been installed over several smashed windows at the Federal Building where two Security Officers were shot while watching over last nights protests. One later died. Kpix 5s kenny choi is there now with new details, kenny . Reporter Homeland Security officials are calling this an act of domestic terrorism. They did not say whether this Fatal Shooting is connected to the protests that erupted in oakland last night, but the fbi did confirm today that the a vehicle approached this building last night around 9 45. They say someone inside that vehicle then started firing shots at two federal protective services officials. We have witnessed an outright assault on our Law Enforcement community. Last night in oakland, california, an assassin kwourdly shot two federal protective Service Contractors as they stood watch over a protest and the department of Homeland Security will not rest until these criminals are brought to justice. Reporter the Oakland Police department, the fbi and the department of Homeland Security have launched a joint investigation. They have not yet released the identities of the Security Officers. But we do know that the wounded officer that survived last night is in Critical Condition at a hospital. And as for the suspect or suspects, no Additional Information from authorities tonight. Were live in oakland, kenny choi, kpix 5. Governor gavin newsom today released a statement expressing his condolences to the families of both officers. He added, quote, i want to thank all those who helped protect human life last night and today from Community Members who exercised their right to protest peacefully and encouraged others to do the same. To the Law Enforcement officer who is faced what were at times challenging conditions. To those who see to exploit californians pain to sew chaos and destruction, you are not welcome. Well, the search is on for the driver of a white suv who barrelled through a crowd of demonstrators in the middle of protests in san jose last night. And take a look. The terrifying scene was captured on a cellphone. The car drove toward a group of protesters and then backed into the crowd, hitting at least two people before it sped away. Witnesses say the driver made a uturn, drove toward the crowd, stepped on the gas and then reversed into the victims. She rolled down her window and said i have a baby, let me through. Then she just went all of a sudden. Then people were telling her to slow down because she was going quickly. Ran over two people, i saw the wheel go over the person. It was awful to watch. The female driver turned on to santa clara street as protesters yelled and threw bottles at the car. Sheriffs deputies fired shots at the fleeing suv as they ran to help the victims, but the driver sped away. Today mayor sam liccardo had this to say were trying to do all we can to calm an awful lot of jittery nerves out here. We certainly appreciate that the outrage and protests are righteous, but the violence is never righteous. Different Bay Area Police departments have shown us very different tactics when it comes to crowd control at these protests. Well dig a little deeper into that coming up. Plus, it was a bit of a dreary day, but that didnt stop surfers and others from making a long awaited return to bay area beaches. Feels good to get outside at a safe distance, hopefully. And it was a lot more than just dreary over in the valleys of the east bay. Downpours, lightning, small hail, a flood watch was in place at times today from those storms. When we come back, were going to see whats coming next in the forecast. Liftoff of the falcon nine. And spacex reaches for the stars, or at least low earth orbit. The histo were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or closing your shades during the day. Stay well and keep it golden. An update on the protest in San Francisco right now. Hundreds of demonstrators are gathered in front of a Police Station in the mission. This is at 17th street and valencia. Live look, they have been on the move for hours now, starting with a city hall rally at noon. But so far, it has all been fretty peaceful here. Well, San Mateo County is easing restrictions and moving forward with phase two of reopening. Starting on monday, Retail Stores will get the go ahead to allow customers inside with limits on capacity and whenever possible curbside service. Places of worship can also resume inperson services as long as attendance is limited to 25 of building capacity or 100 people, whichever is lower. And all of San Mateo Countys beaches have now reopened, but visitors must continue to follow social distancing and nice covering guidelines. In pacifica today, we saw plenty of surfers out on the water and dozens of beach goers enjoying their long awaited access to the coast. We are really enjoying it. Were really grateful. Its just awesome that the parking lot is open again. To be able to park close to the beach and bring the surfboard right out here. As for access to the beach, the San Mateo Daily Journal reports the number of Parking Spaces and restrooms may change. Thats depending on how the transition goes. Now to the weather, those spring storms that brought rain and sheer hail to parts of the bay area today didnt last long, but it certainly got our attention. Yes, the cloudbursts also came with a good dose of thunder. And speaking of shocking, heres darren peck with the latest. It kind of us. The picture of the small hail coming down on that deck in walnut creek, guys, they recorded almost an inch of rain in 30 minutes today. From it can in the afternoon to 2 30, the sky opened up. If youre in those east bay valleys today, this was no doubt the highlight of your day. Let me show you what it looked like on high def doppler. Looking back at the last four hours. Lets go back to the beginning. Bright oranges and yellows and all the flashes of lightning that work their way up 680. It was 580 and 60880. The flood advisory was allowed to expire. No significant concerns from that. And now that things have quieted down, the only things to look at are a few light showers trying to hold together in sonoma county. Things are dramatically quieter now. Thats the view from the top of the Sales Force Tower looking south. Look at the blue breaking through. San jose, thats what it looks like on closer inspection. Speaking of looking south, heres a view i want to pause. Dublin, over the trivalley. I want to put up the rainfall totals. Look at walnut creek in the middle. It wasnt only walnut creek where we had the video of the hail. Dublin got a half inch of rain. And even though the numbers are smaller, no doubt, it was an impressive three tenths of an inch of rain when it came down for your part of town. Now im going to switch the view, and instead of focussing on those inland valleys, looking north over the bay bridge, lets put up the bay area as a whole. Different story here. This was a focus for east valley rain today. We had thunderstorms in other places, but boy, the headline was between 2 00 and 4 00 over there. All right, daytime highs underneath all of that. We came up into the mid 07s for most places. San francisco went up to 69. Just to show you we are pretty much done with this now, this is the accumulated rainfall between now and tonight and theres not much coming. We could get a stray shower, but were pretty much finished with this system. Morning lows go into the mid50s. Daytime highs tomorrow come up very similar to where they were today. Its going to be another cloudy day tomorrow, but its not going to rain. Were done with that from this system. But the clouds are going to linger around and youll be able to tell the leftovers from the system are still here. Lets look ahead. Watch what happens by the middle of the week. Two days here, tuesday and wednesday. Right back up into the low and mid90s for daytime highs. This is not as bad as the heat wave we went through over the holiday. First of all, the temperatures are not as high and its not beginning the be as long. Its going to get hot around here for tuesday and wednesday. Those numbers need be watched closely. There are huge arguments happening now between these high powered computer forecasts. One of them wans to take the numbers higher. But the more reasonable bunch is saying, stick with us. Daytime highs come back down to the mid70s by the weekend. An increase in clouds. Small chance of rain. More on that when we get closer to next weekend. Lets get over to vern. Hey, the sports world has weighed in on george floyd. And this fella here so cant miss with a rock in his hand. You cant leave him open. He was too much for all right. Vern glenn joining us now in sports. I bet youre going to say, just a matter of time. Thats right. In a way, the george floyd story is so hot, you knew that reaction would have to come from the sports world, and it did. Former warrior steven jackson, by the way, is irate. In fact, athletes across the sports spectrum have spoken out on the killing of floyd in minneapolis. In fact, sharks forward evander cane appeared on the espn show first take and had this hot take on friday. We need so many more athletes that dont look like me speaking out about this, having the same amount of outrage that i have inside speak up about what is right and clearly in this case what is unbelievably wrong. Because thats the only way were going to actually create that unified anger to create that necessary change. Off to the nfl. 49er pass rusher dee ford, number 55 here, said friday that he had extensive knee surgery following super bowl liv. Ford said that he dealt with tendonitis in his last knee all of last season. Now, during last years zoom press conference, the 29yearold was asked about the possibility of playing the season where some teams have fans and others dont. It would definitely be, in my opinion, an unfair advantage if some teams have thanes and some teams dont. I heard things about the virtual crowd noise. Im going to go out on a limb and say couple teams already got that going on. So they wont have any issues with it. All right, now, the passion for this started when he was 10 years old. The road to reach a high level bumpy, literally. The sacrifice huge, the payoff priceless. Lets take you to santa rosa. They were just all surprised pretty much, just like the face that is they were making was just like what . Reporter a heart transplant led to a blood clot that put ben thornton in a wheelchair. He was 3 years old. So the thought of playing basketball was, well i was the only kid in a wheelchair at school. Reporter say hello to this division one baller, headed to play for the arizona wildcats, one of 21 colleges with Adaptive Sports programs. When i turned 11 years old, i decided to go to a practice, and it was, you know, nerve wracking and everything. But it turned out, you know, amazing. You can hear my voice in every video saying come on, buddy. You got this, buddy. Reporter plucked from the Bay Area Outreach Program in berkeley, he showed off his skills by his santa rosa home. Every now and then, his shooting touch rubbed off. Magic number. Yeah. Reporter thorntons scholarship to arizona was sealed with a steve kerr wildcats jersey. To get his jersey, thats just really cool. Im going to be wearing that to all the games and everything. Except for the games hes playing in hes going to be wearing number 10 when he suits for the wildcats wheelchair basketball team. He played for trooper johnson, regarded adds the greatest wheelchair basketball player ever. Great coaching, great work on technique there. And arizona recognized his skills. By the way, he graduated yesterday from Maria Carrillo high school. The pumas, wow, what a time for ben thornton. Well keep following him and tracking him. Nice shot there, from your chair. Thank you. All right, vern, thanks. And coming up, the latest on that large protest thats been winding through streets of San Francisco for more than six hours now. Our top story at 6 30, a pair of protests happening on either side of the bay in San Francisco demonstrators are gathered in front of a Police Station in the mission. Theyve been on the move for hours now in a peaceful demonstration that started with a city hall rally at noon. And over in Alameda County, another protest is just getting understand way at a sheriff substation in san leandro. And kpix 5s da lin is there now. Reporter yeah, brian, more protesters have shown up in the last 30 minutes. Now roughly about 70 protesters demonstrating in front of the Alameda CountySheriffs Department substation here in san leandro. Theyre Holding Signs that read black lives matter, white silence equals white violence. Theyre chanting no justice no peace. Now, the Sheriffs Department is not taking any chances, not after last nights riots in downtown oakland which injured two of their deputies, and of course, the minneapolis precinct that got burned down. They have dozens and dozens of deputies and chp officers standing nearby so they can respond quickly if things get out of hand. But organizers are calling for a peaceful protest. My sign says white silence equals white violence, and i want everybody to recognize that. Because white people are the people oppressing black people, and that is wrong. 100 . I dont agree with the writing, but hey, guess what, it got everybodys attention, didnt it . Right . Its wrong but look at the whole nation is looking at it. The whole nation is paying attention. Coronavirus has gone to the back seat, you know . So i just hope that we can make a difference. Thats all i hope for. Reporter the substation is located next to a freeway, 580. Youre looking at the onramp entrance to the to westbound 580. Thats why you see chp officers standing by right there. They want to make sure protesters dont get on to the freeway to stop traffic like they did yesterday in san jose and in oakland. But right now, everything is looking up, brian . Da, ive got two questions for. First, how long they expect the protest to last, and second youve been in the thick of it in protests over many weekends over the years. Whats your read on this one . And what is the mood out there like . Reporter right, so this one is expected to go to 7 00. Not sure if theyll end around that time, but that is the planned time anyway. And i can tell you, i dont see any anarchists. Last night we saw a lot of that, folks dressed in all black, young hipsters in ski masks. They brought it along, hammers and all that stuff. I mean, who goes the a protest with accelerant. Thats what i saw last night. Here, very different crowd. You have seniors. You have families with kids. In fact, theres an infant in a stroller not too far down that way. So a very different crowd. And if it keeps up that way, i think were going to be okay. The big worry is when those anarchists start to show up. We havent seen that yet. All right, in san leandro, da lin, da, thank you. No peace, no peace. We are counting down to a curfew in los angeles tonight after a fourth day of protests took over city streets. This one is in the citys fairfax district. Those protesters will soon be forced to go home. Mayor eric gar tetsy has imposed a citywide curfew that goes into effect in less than two hours. Earlier today, several land cars were vandalized. Were going to have to work so hard and together, everyone, to clean this up. I mean, this is just who knows this is probably not the end. Reporter protesters ignored an 8 00 p. M. Curfew, prompting the governor to activate the states full National Guard for the first time in the states history. Last night is a mockery of pretending this is about George Floyds death. Reporter as the National Guard rolled into minneapolis, President Trump urged minnesota officials to get tougher with protesters. Theyve got to be tough. Theyve got to be smart. We have our military ready, willing and able if they ever want to call our military. But we can have troops on the ground very quickly. Reporter talking with people on this block, a lot of folks told us they support the protests but seeing this destruction of their community breaks their heart. If its not broken or burnt down its tagged with graffiti. Reporter anger over floyds death ignited protests in dozens of u. S. Cities. Protesters in atlanta set fires and smashed the windows of the cnn center, set fire to Police Vehicles in new york, and police held back an angry mob at the white house. Reporter officials across the country are bracing for another night of possible violence following a National Call for protests. Michael george, cbs news, minneapolis. Back here at home, a tale of two protests in two major bay area cities. The Police Department in san jose and in oakland took two very different approaches in how they handled the massive crowds last night. And kpix 5s betty yu is here in the studio to explain. Brian, we have seen different kinds of Police Protest tactics in the bay area, as we just saw. Mainly retreat and stay more hands off or deploy and engage. In san jose, we saw more aggressive policing early on, which included officers using batons, flash bang grenades and tear gas to break up the crowd and subdue unrest. In oakland, we observed officers using a less forceful, more restrained approach. That approach has deinvolved into violence and vandalism toward the end of the night. Departments are constantly finding the balance between keeping the peace and protecting the safety of officers and the public. Were trying to do all that we can to calm an awful lot of jittery nerves out here. And we certainly appreciate that the outrage is righteous, the protests are righteous, but the violence is never righteous. That was the mayor speaking about the protests in his city last night. He says he shares in the outrage and frustration over the killing of george floyd but does not want to see violence as an expression of that anger. Mayor libby schaaf said today protests and free speech is part of oaklands dna but said shes asking people to stay home and stay safe, especially during this health crisis. She said violent actors are using Peaceful Protesters as a shield to hide behind. Juliette . Betty, thank you. Tonight there are concern that is the massive protests could fuel a new surge in coronavirus cases. The u. S. Death toll topped 103,000 today with more than 1. 7 million confirmed cases. Were basically going into the time of year it doesnt rain at all, but here on the second to last day in may we picked up as much rain in walnut creek in 30 minutes as San Francisco sees on average for the entire month. Let me show you numbers. Walnut creek got eight tenths of an inch of rain. Dublin in there. San ramon, three tenths of an inch. Livermore, threehundredths. If we look across the rest of the bay area, not to say we didnt all get rain, but there was a focus today. There was a show that happened in all up and down the corridor that 680 is in. It wasnt only walnut creek. In order for us to get that amount of rain in a time of year where were supposed to be entering the dry period, you need a unique circumstance and thats exactly what you had today. If you just looked at the regular satellite, youd miss it. Im dwroing to bring in that weird looking water vape pore. Now you see what happened. We just happen to be in the center of the bullseye. You find yourself in the middle of an area of low pressure like that thats tightly wound, thats where all the energy is. And it was a bullseye. We got unique weather in a time of year when we really would see anything but weather like that, and its done. High def doppler doesnt have anything on it now. Things are starting to quiet down. Its going to be a great cloud show out there tonight and again tomorrow. But as far as rain, that part of the story is over. Right now the numbers are in the upper 60s. Ill show you where we go for morning lows. We start out on sunday morning under relatively clousz in the mid50s, similar to where we were. And here are the daytime highs. Mid70s for much of the south bay. Well see temperatures in the ease bay come into the upper 80s. 79 for pittsburg. Concord 77. Oakland tops at at 69. Similar to where we were today temperaturewise, and the sky will look quite similar as well. But there will be less rain. Look what happens. By the time we get to tuesday and wednesday, we have another warmup coming. Not as dramatic as the heat wave we just had for the past holiday. Instead of the low hundreds, low 90s. Weve had final to acclimate and shouldnt feel too bad. Were going to cool back down again as we we have some breaking news out of san jose. The Sheriffs Department has arrested a woman they say ran her suv into a crowd of protesters last night, hitting two people before speeding off. Deputies say 26yearold bianca intentionally drove her car into the crowd. They say a deputy shot at her suv as it sped away. She was later arrested and has been booked on attempted murder charges.
