Work outing look like when you do get there . A plan for Affordable Housing. Uc berkeley coming at a cost. The tenants caught in the middle who could lose their place to live. Bart is preparing for the return of its riders. With more people going back to work, bart wants to put anxiety to rest. At evening. Im alan martin. Im elizabeth cook. We have more on the transit agencys plan to manage social distancing across the area. Reporter for some perspective, on a normal day before this started, bart would carry 4000 people every day. The numbers have started to climb. Ridership now is up to about 30,000 people. Still a fraction of where they used to be. It makes bart start thinking about something. How will they manage increased crowds when they come . Starting next week, every train car in bart will be thoroughly sanitized every night. Armed with a new set of sterilizing guns, the general manager said the agency is stepping up cleaning game in anticipation of more passengers and the passengers should plan on wearing a mask. Bart police come as you enter the system, just to make sure you have a mask, they will have additional masks ready to hand out should you not have your mask there. The convenience of largely empty trains is not lost on those who are still using the system. People crowded and getting sick, it is just more anxiety. When the demand increases enough, we can change our headways back to 15 minute headways and move more people and we can look at the closing hours. That is, if more people get back on the train. In truth, bart has no idea what kind of demand it will see over the coming months. If you have been working from home for the last two and half months and it has been working quite well, you may remain working from home or you may go into the office two days a week or one day a week or Something Like that picks that would has an impact on ridership. All of that being said, how comfortable are the riders returning to the system even if they can. Reporter what is the demand for the system and how comfortable do people feel using it . Does one of those have to come before the other . It is hard to answer those questions now. But bart says they have a 15point plan to address the concerns about safety, sterilization and crowding on the trains, whether or not or when they have to use it is what remains unknown. Kpix5. Bart has a solution for passengers who choose to stand. Personal hand straps. The attached poles and handles on trains. Bart will be selling the straps by phone order in person and through the online store. The original series project home. A battle over who deserves Affordable Housing and berkeley. The university is grappling with Student Housing but it would come at a cost. We take a look at the last ditch effort to preserve Affordable Housing. In a sea of bright orange brick that marks the uc berkeley campus, tenants are fighting to keep their heads above water. I think all neighbors where an utter shock. On april 20th, in the midst of this global pandemic, this woman and her husband received this letter informing them that they might have to move. They have been told they would have to give up the control apartment for 1000 a month. It is just callous and distressing. I cannot think of a more inappropriate time to do a preeviction notice than during a pandemic. You dont know where you will be living. We have worked hard and we love our jobs but we are not sure if we will have jobs in a few weeks. We have not completed the purchase. We have not yet decided what will happen to the building. This is a spokesperson for uc berkeley. He said the letter was only sent out at this time because they were legally required to notify tenants of the potential for displacement. The letter specifically states that this is not a notice to vacate. Tenants will be asked to move until after the shelter in place has been lifted. One of the toughest parts of being a student at the school is the housing department. She says finding a place to live on campus is nearly as competitive as getting in. Before, there were some units that could receive anywhere from 4060 applications. The walnut Street Building could be redeveloped as part of the gateway project which could house as many as 1000 students. The original plan for gateway did not include redeveloping this part of walnut street. Marsha said she supports more housing but she knows that students dont want to further identify berkeley. If their apartment was on berkeley city property, the units could not be destroyed. The city law requires that rent control units be preserved and tenants be allowed to stay. But on the uc berkeley campus, the law does not apply. I would ask the university to move slowly and consider the loss of these units as something that would be a tragedy for the city. Kate harrison is looking for a lastminute solution. She is asking the berkeley land trust to consider stepping in and purchase the building so the city does not risk losing 12 affordable apartments. Use the Office Relocation benefits to the tenants. It only helps them in the short term. What we are concerned about is the long run maintenance of Affordable Housing. There is no timeline in place for when this purchase will be finalized. If they move now, they forfeit their rights to Relocation Assistance from the university which could be substantial. For kim, it is added ambiguity in the most uncertain of times times. It is the one thing that feels stable. Given the economy, jobs, health and life. It is pretty crazy to have your own home be threatened during all of this. The City Council MemberKate Harrison told me when we were talking that as important as it is to preserve these 12 units for the People Living in them now, it is more about the affordable unit. Because if they are destroyed, they are gone. Kpix5. Keep sending your stories and ideas to project home at cbs. Com. You can see all the reporting on our website. Back in the salon chair.
