Apply the same Salary Increases negotiated for teachers to top administrators but parents argue this is not another regular school year. If the district is saying face for cut backs of teachers and more kids in classrooms and fewer teachers on campuses but well give a nice golden parachute to out going administrators makes no sense to me. School Board Members say theyve received roughly 300 emails from parents sharing concerns about the Salary Increases. Motion carries unanimous hi. In danville, kpix 5. One east bay city could demolish Affordable Housing units in order to build more housing. Its distressing. I cant think of a more inappropriate time. In to be thes project home, the controversial plan, and the tenants fighting for their homes during an Unprecedented Health crisis. And an impressive scene in the bay today, as a piece of American History sails to a new temporary home. What forced the move after two decades in the same spot . No justice, no peace, prosecute the police. Protesters voice their anger over the death of an African American man during a violent now to our original series, project home, and a battle over who deserves Affordable Housing in berk hi. The university is grappling with Building Student housing that would permanently destroy twelve rent controlled units. We take a look at the thats ditch effort to preserve this Affordable Housing. In a sea of brick that marks the grandiosity of tenants fighting to keep their heads above water. I think theo, myself, and all the neighbors were in utter shock. On april 20th in the midst of this global pandemic, kim and her husband theo received this letter informing them they might have to move. Which would mean giving up their rent controlled apartment that goes for less than 1,000 a month. I really couldnt believe it. Its distressing. Theres a i cant think of a more inappropriate time to do a preeviction notice during a pandemic. When you dont know where youre going to be moving and kim and i work very hard. We love our jobs but were not sure if we do have jobs. We havent completed the purchase. Dan is a spokesperson for uc berkeley, he says the letter was only sent out at this time because they were legally required to notify ten manhattans of the potential for displacement. The letter states this is not a notice to vacate. Tenants wont be asked to move until after shelter in place has been lifted. One of the toughest parts of being a student is the housing market. She says finding a mace to live on campus is nearly as competitive as getting in. There are some units in the city of berkeley that are student apartments that can receive 40 to 60 applications. The walnut Street Building could be redeveloped as part of the gateway project that could house as many as 1,000 students the original plan did not incle redevelopi of walnut street. She supports more housing but knows students dont want to further gentririfb berkeley. If theo and kims apartment was on berkeleys city property, these units couldnt be destroyed. City law requires rent controlled units be preserved and tenants be allowed to stay. But on campus, that law doesnt apply. I would ask the university to move slowly and consider the loss of the units as something that would be a tragedy for the city. City Council MemberKate Harrison is looking for a last minute solution asking the berk hi Community Land trust to consider stepping in to purchase the building so the city doesnt risk permanently losing 12 affordable apartments. I understand you see offers relocation benefits to the tenants. That only helps in the short term. Were worried about the long term maintenance of Affordable Housing and rent controlled units. Theres no timeline in place for when the purchase will be finalized. If they move now, they forfeit rights to relocation from the university that could be substantial. For kim, its added ambiguity in the most uncertain of times. Its like the one thing that feels stable now. Given everything, the economy, jobs, health, life, like, you know, its pretty crazy. To then have your own home be threatened during all of this. So talking with city Council MemberKate Harrison, she kept emphasizing that while its important to preserve these units of course. The gateway project didnt originally include this particular building, whats changed . So all we know is that in late 2019, the owner changed their minds. They decided they wanted to sell this building originally when gateway was being talked about, they didnt want to sell. They had no choice. As soon as that was offered the University Said they were interested in buying, they reached out to owner if they wanted to comment and they got a very quick no comment. Wow. Its all about timing on this one. Susie, thank you for that. We invite you to keep sending stories and ideas to project home at cbs. Com and see all of susies reporting on our website.
