Kens off tonight. The unusually warm weather had been crowds packing San Franciscos ocean beach. Chief meteorologist paul joining us with details on a hotter day tomorrow. Todays temperatures broke records in a number of spots. Concord got up to 99 degrees. San jose tied todays record High Temperature of 95. Oakland broke a record High Temperature. 91 degrees. Santa rosa two degrees off todays record. Made it all the way up to 94. Even San Francisco climbed above 80 but along the coast, Half Moon Bay only made it to 66 degrees. Youre likely to make it into the 70s tomorrow. The heat advisory includes all of our inland locations around the bay area. Its even an excessive heat warning for solano county. The hottest days are going to be tomorrow and wednesday. Triple digit temperatures likely farther inland and air quality is going to be a concern. Code orange alert for the north bay, east bay, and santa clara valley. Well talk about which records are likely to fall tomorrow coming up in a few minutes. Hot temperatures bringing droves of people out to bay area beaches. Kpix 5s joe vazquez with how some cities are responding to the massive crowds. The weather was glorious and the crowds were large here on ocean beach. Thousands of people flocked here and there were major attempts at social distancing here and across the bay area. Not always successful. Reporter heres the view from the cliff house midafternoon. You can see there are big swaths of sand between groups of people on ocean beach and there are varying levels of comfort with this scene. Its too soon for everybody to be out here. I feel like we safe because we about six feet from everybody. I was running past the beach and thought maybe half the city didnt get the memo on social distancing. But on closer inspection, it looks like people might be keeping six feet a part. I have to say its a bit of a shock to the system. I havent seen so many people in one space for many months. Reporter in concords to desanto plaza, its a picnic with social distancing all amode. Beachgoers were trying to park at nearby shopping centers. In San Francisco, authorities also wrote a whole bunch of parking tickets worth 106 each. This is the great highway at slope boulevard. Its a hazard. Fire crews cant get in and lifeguards to get to the beach and its clearly posted no parking any time. Reporter thats clear but the message about whats okay and what not to do in terms of covid is now a little murky. People are encouraged to go out and exercise and shop for food and clothes curbside but also to stay inside. Heres the statement the city gave us tonight. Quote, we understand people want to enjoy the great weather and spend time with friends and family. However, the fact remains that the stayathome order is still in effect and the virus continues to circulate in our community. So a lot of people feel theyre left to do whats comfortable to them. If youre going to be out here amongst people, then i think a mask will help you out. It doesnt give me a negative sentiment if i dont see someone wearing it on the street. Are we really distancing . In the next few days, the number of american lives lost to the coronavirus will exceed 100,000. The virus has killed nearly 350,000 people worldwide. One major hot spot right now is in brazil where more than 22,000 people have died. Yesterday President Trump banned anyone from entering the u. S. If theyve been to the south american nation in the past two weeks. Many people in Santa Clara County are spending their memorial day getting tested for the coronavirus. The county has opened six new testing locations in Mountain View, san jose, milpitas, and morgan hill. Long lines could be seen at some of those sites. Are there going to be some problems and glitches . Yes, until we resolve though. But were working every day. A lot of people are working to try to get all that ironed out so we dont have barriers and problems because if we tell you that you should go get tested, it should be easy for you to do that. No appointments are needed. Thats first come, first served. Governor newsom giving the green light to open up with new safety measures. But not everyone is onboard. Some local pastors say its still too soon. Not all churches are ready for worshipers to return. They got together at a safe distance to call for more testing and education in the black community. They say gathering too soon puts lives and communities in danger. The church is not the building. The church is the believer. And because of that, we encourage you to worship in place and shelter in grace. Reporter the message from pastor Joseph Bryant today on the steps of San Francisco city hall. They rallied to keep church doors closed particularly because the community is the hardest hit by the coronavirus. We have too many preexisting conditions. We have too many seniors in the congregations. We have to do too much work in our buildings to make them right. Just because we can do a thing doesnt mean we should do a thing. Reporter today the governor released new guidelines for religious gatherings. Congregations will be limited to 25 of building capacity or a maximum of 100 people, whichever is lower. Worshippers will be required to wear masks. Theyll not be allowed to share books and collection plates will not be passed around. At a time of uncertainty, faith and that devotion, something bigger than yourself more pronounced and more profound. Reporter a mothers Day Church Service was held despite county rules. The pastor spoke out on social media about his decision to hold the service that more than 180 people attended. Unfortunately when you step out in front and you strive to lead, im not perfect. And in mendocino county, a total of nine people have now tested positive after a Mothers Day Service at assembly of god church in redwood county. The governor is levering it up to counties to decide whether the facilities in their jurisdictions may reopen. California Air National Guard giving a big thank you to those fighting on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic. They took off from their base in Mountain View about midday. The Area Foundation contained two rescue helicopters. During the flight they passed over many bay area hospitals to express gratitude to healthcare workers and first responders. Why a recall effort has been laun hot weather making it harder to fight a big fire in milpitas today. Large column of smoke visible across the south bay and it came from this fire at the nubi island landfill. Its unclear what started the flames. San francisco firefighters continue to watch for flareups at pier 45 near fishermans wharf. A massive fire tore through a large warehouse on saturday. Drone video officers a fresh look at the damage from the fire. As you can see, part of the wreckage is still smoldering. Thousands of crabs, shrimp, and black cod traps were destroyed in that fire. Fishermen say the devastation threatens the dungeness crab season, even though the season start is five months away. Nine Southern CaliforniaIndustrial Facilities are reporting coronavirus outbreaks including five meatpacking plants. The biggest outbreak happened at the Smithfield Foods owned farmer john plant. The facility in the city of vernon is where the famous dodger dog is made. More than 150 out of about 1800 employees have tested positive. City Officials Say the first cases at the plants were reported back in march. It was a familiar scene at the beaches in Southern California today. A lot of crowds and not too many face masks. In orange county, signs were up to remind people the beaches are only open for physical activity. That means no sunbathing or picnicking. That didnt seem to stop people today. Lifeguards did say the crowds were lighter today than the typical memorial day rush. Many beaches were packed this memorial day. South lake tahoe sat empty. Thats not going to change much for the next few days. A little storm system is cut off from the main flow of the atmosphere, can kind of go where it wants. Its separated from the jet stream and its going to head up to us by the weekend. It could bring us a chance of showers by saturday. A long way down the line and the cutoff lows can be kind of tricky. 60s and 70s mixed together for current temperatures. Anywhere from 60 on the nose right now in San Francisco to still 77 degrees in concord and 76 in livermore. Temperatures will continue dropping off as we head through the rest of the night. Were just going to keep climbing near triple digit temperatures farther inland and i think were going to have triple digit readings on the map with highs tomorrow afternoon. The records that are likely to fall, well, not in San Francisco. Not in oakland. But san jose likely to break a record high. Santa rosa and so is concord with triple digit temperatures likely, especially for the inland east bay. When the temperatures heat up that much, your car heats up as well. Everybody knows that and our air temperatures go from 70 to 80 to 90. Look at what the inside of your car does. An hour and 90degree heat. The inside of your car gets up to 133 degrees. Make sure youre checking the back seat. Its time to get into that frame of mind. Still near triple digit heat on wednesday. We back off slightly thursday. That heat advisory continues thursday evening. Then our temperatures drop a bit with a chance of showers saturday and again monday of next week.
