We will be about 10 degrees above average. 52 in coord, 52, oakland, those numbers are not really all that off the mark or noteworthy but if i show you the daytime highs for today, they require a little bit of reference. These temperatures on your screen, in the mid80s for inland locations, they are 10 degrees above average, itll be 86 in santa rosa, 86 in concord, 81 in san jose, oakland, 86, 10 degrees average for today is going to turn into a much more significant heat wave by the time we had monday and specifically next week. And that will be the main aspect of the forecast i will spend time talking to you about the heat watch thats already in place for much of next week, including the holiday on monday but its actually tuesday and wednesday that are going to be the real concerns for the east. Ill be back with all of that in a few minutes. Counties are relaxing more shelterinplace restrictions as the Holiday Weekend begins in Solano County and there, restaurants are allowed to start sitdown business. Many of the restaurants in downtown fairfield are open but hardly a diner in, a lot of people dont know about the new rules and it seems many still prefer to get their food to go. I feel its too soon. Jackie was getting takeout from one of the most popular spots in town. Once big italian pizza, some diners took advantage of the lifted restrictions but for the most part, customers are getting food to go period i will not eat in a restaurant i think, for a month. The maximum Restaurant Owners also have a tepid response to having customers dine in. Actually i was depressed. Here, the owner of the pizzeria said its hard for him to figure out what exactly the state guidelines are. He said it doesnt make sense to bring his staff back when he has to work at limited capacity. Ive got two extra omwhat am do . Im going to put three tables in one and its not going to work out. The solano Public County HealthDepartment Said restaurants should be following the basic social distancing guidelines such as keeping table 6 feet apart and having employees wear masks. If you want to stay open youve got to adhere to these because you dont want to be the source of disease spread and we dont want to cite you, we want you to do it correctly. With the Holiday Weekend, the concern is that more people will be out and about enjoying their new freedoms but this doctor reminds residents very little has changed about the shelter at home order. Another reason for concern is that Solano County found a cluster of cases over the mothers day weekend and the following weekend. We have breaking news this morning out of San Francisco, crews are battling a massive fire at your 45 at fishermans worth. The video shows the massive blaze that broke out a little after 4 00 this morning on jefferson street. Authorities say parts of the buildings have collapsed from the fire and several old warships docked are threatened. It has spread to two buildings and is in danger of spreading to a thirdperiod video shows heavy black smoke from the building. Additional units are being assigned to the scene to combat the blaze. Right now traffic is being blocked. Its unclear what sparked the fire, theres no word this morning on any injuries. We will bring you the latest information as co Solano County is following in the footsteps, the county has been permission to go to phase 2, that means restaurants, breweries and tasting rooms are allowed offer Patio Services to customers. Sonoma county has reported more than 400 cases of coronavirus and 4 debts. A lot of people are staying in town this memorial day weekend and officials in oakland are asking them to keep their distance at lake merritt. The current plan is to his room instruction on august 10 with a blended model of distance and online learning. We are going to start out the forecast with a unique view on things because we started the newscast and we were discussing the breaking news, the fire that had been burning down. 45 and if you are waking up this morning particularly if you are in the east bay, you are noticing something in the sky that has probably caught your attention, this is not the marine layer, those are not clouds, that is the layer of smoke that has gotten trapped, and its giving us that view that might confuse you and have you think its a cloudy start to the day. Thats the leftover smoke from the fire burning at pier 45 which theyve gotten under control at this point and theres just leftover smoke that we are going to be looking at in the sky. Notice, you dont see it when you look east, so the smoke that was coming off of that fire at pier 45, that has gotten caught in just a subtle easterly flow and its taking that smoke out towards the coast. So we are not seeing the smoke go over the bay bridge, it is making its way out over towards the golden gate. Okay, theres our start to the day, you can see the leading edge of that smoke, lets get back to the weather. Temperatures out there right now in the low 50s, the headline in todays forecast, besides the fact that today is going to be 10 degrees above average and tomorrow will be similar, its the heat wave coming our way for early next week, including the holiday on monday. So, everywhere in that yellow shade is under that excessive heat watch that begins late monday morning and goes through thursday. Tuesday,sdthsday. S monday, l four days, tuesday and four e have issues. Let me show you the preview on the forecast for memorial day, proper. And i want you to look at the top line, those are the inland numbers at 3 00 in the afternoon on monday, we are going to hit 100 degrees for many locations in contra costa county. Around the bay, the temperatures will be in the 80s. Weve still got the start of this weekend now, these temperatures, 10 degrees above average, they are not as bad as they are about to get on monday, tuesday and wednesday. 80s for much of the south bay, we will top out in the mid80s today and the mid80s is still warm but remember, though hundreds are common for the early part of next week. Daytime highs for the north bay, the closer you are to the golden gate, more manageable but the city is even going to feel noticeably warm today. We will go to the midseventies in the 70s and daytime highs will be coming up into the low 80s. For the next seven days, theres the warmup, the spotlight, tuesday, wednesday and thursday at this point. The further we get into this, and other words the closer we get to the heat wave, the longer it looks like the heatwave is going to last. Thats an important aspect about this, its not that we will hit 100 degrees, its that we are going to hit 100 degrees for much of next week, three days in a row, even friday at is still hot, so this is clearly where the focus, at least in the weather world is going to turn and hopefully we can everybodys attention on this considering its the first big holiday of the summer, whenever that looks like under current situations, and on top of that the fact that its going to be very uncomfortable for people inside who dont have air conditioning. Unless im imagining it, i believe i smell the smoke, a little faint but i think i can kind of smell it. We are not that far. Even indoors you are saying . The proxitha the fire would make that reasonable especially with the way the ventilation system would work. Remember, from the plume, thats smoke out there in the sky so that will certainly catch peoples attention when they step out the door. So we want to make people bull aware. Before i get too far into the details of the weather i want to address whats in the sky that is not weatherrelated and thats the smoke, you can see behind you from the Treasure Island camera, see that gray patch out there, those arent clouds, a fire that had been burning at pier 45, right around Taylor Street where it meets the water there, thats put a lot of smoke into the sky over the city in fact i can give you a couple of other views there. Thats not the marine layer, that tastiness from the smoke and you can see a thin line of it making its way to the Golden Gate Bridge but if you look east, thats regular haze, the smoke is not going to the east bay, its in and around the city, and working its way slowly down the east side of the peninsula so if you are waking up and wondering what that is in the sky, thats where its coming from. Temperatures out there in the mid50s, if i show you the daytime highs they, they are 10 degrees above average. If you notice things warming up yesterday, that was a subtle warmup, today you are really going to notice it. It puts us into the mid80s for inland locations but the real story in todays forecast is not that its going to be 10 degrees warmer today although you should not take that lightly, the real story is the fact that there is a significant heat wave coming our way for monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday of next week. The heat wave starts on wednesday, ill be back in a few minutes. Back to you. We have more information on the massive fire that erupted on peer 45 in Fishermans Wharf, it broke out around 4 20 this morning, right now more than 100 firefighters are battling the blaze. Authorities say it spread to two buildings and is in danger of spreading to a third. We are learning that the fire has spread under the peer, crews have evacuated it, its unclear what sparked the fire, there is no word this morning on injuries. Many americans will venture out of their homes this memorial day weekend after weeks of sheltering in place. Thats even though far fewer people are expected to travel this year, officials are urging them not to let their guard down. Michael george has more from new york. They have a good containment on the fire right now, the large flames are out and now firefighters are continuing to put water on this blaze that started earlier this morning, sometime in the 4 00 hour and wilson is going to show you more of the white smoke that is billowing out of this building. Earlier this morning there were large flames shooting up into the sky, and if you live miles and miles away in San Francisco you would be able to see the smoke and perhaps the flames depending on your location but at this point, they have a good handle on this. We are seeing white smoke and typically thats good music, black smoke with indicate that the fire was still burning hot and fast but at this point, its white smoke, a lot of firefighters from all over the city, battling and containing the blaze right now, we understand this was at one point, a four alarm fire, here in the city of San Francisco, this is on the back end of Fishermans Wharf and we understand from talking to folks around here, the place that got heavy fire damage was some kind of a Fish Processing facility. We are told there are delivery trucks and vans inside the building inside the warehouse, we cant really see any of those trucks or fans but we understand the walls have collapsed over at that facility. So, i would imagine theres a lot of damage to the vehicles that are there. We are not aware of any injuries, at least we have not been told by the Fire Department about any injuries, but earlier this morning, the fire was burning fast and hot and it was burning out of control, again, all the way up to a four alarm fire, but the good news, it looks like they have a good containment around the fire, white smoke, always a good sign for firefighters, and the atmosphere is not as tense typically when theres a large place going on, they are running around, controlled chaos but at this point, they are letting the cruise and the firefighters work on hotspots that are still burning. Thatshelatee, no injuries, at least not that we are hearing at this point, i will send it back to you. This fire broke out around 4 15, do you know or have any indication if the business was open and in operation when the fire first broke out . Were their workers inside the building initially . There were some workers who left the warehouse, we dont know if they were working or not. And we dont know if they were the ones who were reporting this fire but we did hear that there were some workers who were inside or at least nearby, and they were telling us that there were delivery vehicles in that warehouse. But we dont know if they were actually sior working onvely, atarnot y give information, maybe later on in the newscast. Thank you for the update. This is the smoke that is really starting to get diffused, its starting to spread out anticipate that this is the smoke from the fire we were just telling you about. The one at pier 45. You can still see it from the camera that sits on Treasure Island looking back towards the city but you can see far less of it at this Vantage Point and we could before. Thats the dark gray band and you can see it creeping slowly there, towards the Golden Gate Bridge. Its a unique situation because you have something which looks like the marine layer cloud only its going the opposite way, and this also tells you the smoke is not terribly high. I was able to check the air sensors, the air quality is fine unless you are in the immediate 2 to 3 block radius, that tells us the smoke was able to rise and get sent on its way and one final review on this, this is a view of the High Resolution satellite and a science, but this is the best way to get a handle on where the smoke is going. And this shows you, its drifting to the south, hugging the east side of the peninsula, some of the getting pulled out towards the gate, this is going to dissipate over the next hour so if you are wondering whats all that stuff in the sky, there you have it. Lets talk about the headline, the excessive heat watch which goes into effect at 11 00 on monday morning. It does not expire until 7 00 on thursday evening, thats a long stretch of time. We are going to be experiencing significant heat and heat related illnesses will be possible, heat exhaustion particularly for anybody who needs to be working outside and even though you can see the coast is not included in this, everywhere else in yellow is, including the city where we will be well into the upper 70s and low 80s but at these temperatures from concord and livermore will see temperatures touching 100. For memorial day, numbers and land are the headline, 100 degrees by 3 00 in the afternoon on monday. But that covers monday, let me get you ready for saturday, the numbers for today, while not excessively as hot as that, they are still these numbers are 10 degrees above average.
