A lot of our american heros from world war ii, not just the korean war, vietnam war orand r housed and supported in institutions like this have been immune from the spread of the virus. Quite the contrary. Theres tragic lives lost and examples where the insidiousness of this disease spread like wild fire through facilities like this across the country. Thats not been the case, and i say this cautiously, soberly not been the case to date in the state of california. Throughout the entire system, eight hospitals, we have had just three patients test positive for covid19. Weve had a number of stuff but the overwhelming majority of staff, all but two have recovered and are back at work. Thats because of the seriousness of purpose that was advanced weeks before california stay at home order was put in place by our secretary of Veterans Affairs. These facilities are not immune to the challenge that so often present in the lives of california as it relates to wild fires, earthquakes, and other hazard. As a consequence in many respects of the Emergency Operation plans that facilities like this and others had already organized and practiced over the course of the last number of years and wild fires in this region but also in southern california, that has hardened peoples senses and instilled a real focus and Energy Around protecting staff, protecting our patience and those we serve the american heros that are part of this system. Before we came to this podium, the governor and i were further up the hill where this campus hosts a cemetery in which veterans of all of our wars are entered going back to the civil war and even earlier, the spanish american war. This is Hallowed Ground and full of veterans who as is the case with Nursing Homes across the country are an here in their ninth and tenth decades of life going back to early days of world war ii. But by their underlying disease burdens and by the burdens they incured by putting on the nations uniform picking up the weapons and more in battlefield and names youre all familiar with. Since the earliest years and the polio epidemic and in medical school of the university of vermont and hiv virus that caused aids became an epidemic itself. Because of those experiences, i always follow the cdc reports on the emergence of rare and exotic diseases wherever they are. When i heard in december a strange new disease that was highly contagious and highly lethal emerged, i immediately convened our team of leadership. We have a robust it was made necessary that the fact that earthquake and wild fires happen all the time. In fact, a wild fire three years ago came very close to one of our buildings on this campus. We also have a plan to treat the epidemic that comes with flu every winter. So that gradually closed which i was afraid would run wild fire to the veteran population. For example, the Veterans Home have a physician in each home and we have specially trained nurses who are expert in Infection Control and we teach ma wur ne of our emoyees does a nurses aid, or grounds keeper, you know about Infection Control in our homes. We took all the tigan guidance of va and cdc and more, theres nothing magical about what they wanted us to do. All their guidance is common sense and a tent graders knowledge of germ theory and applied to the Veterans Homes. We just did a month before everyone else and two weeks before the state. I lost my own father this week, he was 98yearold veteran of world war ii. A marine that fought in the solomon islands. We honor him as we do all veterans that died defending this nation. Thats what Decoration Day and now memorial day is. Our connection to the history is by honoring the men and women living in our Veterans Homes and my final absolute to the talented and dedicated staff i have at all the homes and leadership and rankin file to work at cal vet and work at taking care of these veterans is not just a job, its a mission.
