I had an airplane dream, where we were flying into a dark cloud, and i was, like, oh, no, this plane needs to be grounded. This is not good. Well, there is a metaphor. Yeah, exactly. Reporter metaphors fill the pages of her dream journal, which these days reads like a psychological thriller. I dreamed that someone dreamed of a dead person on a gurney. Reporter can you summarize for me the general impact you feel that the pandemic has had on your dreams . And i think it is because the virus is an invisible menace. Reporter one popular iimage. Ive seen images of every kind of bugs, flying or racing at the dreamer, grasshoppers with vampire fangs. It is where oprah was rounding up people to be her audience, and her henchmen were imprisoning them in a giant warehouse that had mattresses spaced six feet apart. At the end of the dream, oprah bursts into the warehouse, ready to do her show, and in show biz style, she says some of her guests today are getting a very big surprise, and she pulls out a chainsaw and comes at the dreamer. Reporter thats how everybody feels right about now, were living in zoom boxes. Right. Reporter artist Sandra Haynes had one spectacular dream, now part of the harvard study. Reporter which is very dramatic. Right. It is, very dramatic. Reporter the egyptians thought dreams were messages from the gods, the greeks saw them as visions from the dead, and Sigmund Freud was sure dreams involved sex. Why do you we dream . No one knows for sure. But during rem sleep, where we mostly dream, this is where our memories get consolidated. So we gave it a try, and the very next session, he comes in and just tells me, you know, in tears, i had that new dream and its just so meaningful. Reporter are you worried about peoples general Mental Health because of the dreams theyre having . No. I think people are having, for the most part, very healthy, normal reactions to this situation. Reporter with one exception, says professor barrett. The Health Care Workers are having fullon traumatic nightmares. There was one italian anesthesiologist who was trying to intubate somebody in a dream, and he fell backwards out of the window out of the hospital, clutching the patient with him as he fell. And he landed on the ground okay, and the patient was decapitated. Reporter ooh she says for those suffering ptsd, counselling may be needed. Reporter baby birds, not quite ready to fly, stuck in their nests, waiting for their food to be delivered. That is pretty much the way so many of us have felt lately, even as we, too, poke our heads out more and more. We used to crave silence and solitude. Isolation was healing. But as beautiful as all of this looks, chances are most of us would trade peace for other people right about now. Human beings do not like to be alone. Reporter jeff fong is a socialologist at cal poly. We taught to cope with people, to interact with people. When youre on your own, have you to author your own way out of this. Reporter and thats what all of this is about, coping, right . It is coping. We need to connect again to the body, to the handshake, to the hug. But for the time being, that is not going to happen because our physical spaces have been emptied. Reporter and even as they fill up, were still told to isolate six feet apart. Learning how to live in a kind of social strait jacket is a new thing for us. Reporter steve cole is a geomics professor. Were likely to die, get cancer, to get heart attacks and alzheimers, and more vulnerable to viral infections when were lonely. Reporter blame what he calls our dinosaur brain. Long ago being alone meant being a pretty easy lunch for something bigger and more powerful. Our brains are wired, he says, to see isolation as a threat. What happens when we feel lonely is that dinosaur brain immediately computes not safe, and it triggers these physiological responses that get us ready for injury completely without us thinking about it. We may not even be aware of this. Reporter so even being alone for just a couple of weeks can have a physio impact . Even being alone for just a few days is enough to do it. Reporter but isolation doesnt have to get the better of you. Just ask father angelus echeverry. Do you ever get lonely . Oh, sure. Sure. Reporter he is a benedictine monk at the edge of californias vast mojave desert. What would you tell people having a hard time with this sort of forced isolation, who havent chosen this voluntarily, like you. What is your advice on how to get through it . Be gentle with yourself. Be patient. Patience is something that is quite difficult to do because patience simply means to be able to sit with our suffering. Most of us struggle with that. Reporter but it is in that struggle, he says, that we sometimes forget that while isolation does take, it can also give. The space has been created for dreaming. The space has been created for allowing our mind to wander. Reporter to get rid of the clutter . Yeah. Youre not worried about the next thing because the next thing isnt happening. Reporter history is full of examples of people who have used isolation to their benefit. Henry davidthoreau selfquaranteselfquarantined ie massachusetts woods for two years, an experiment of what he called constructive solitude. It gave us his master work, walden. In the 1600s, with playhouses closed, William Shakespeare penned king lear, mcbeth, and antony and cleopatra. So isaac newton was stuck at home when he developed the theory of gravity. Newton, shakespeare, or lear didnt have this to worry about homeschooling, or job loss, either, like most of us mere mortals. But if we conceive our isolation as an opportunity, like they did 75 rides on the peloton. Reporter even the smallest thing might empower us to feel a little less alone. So many of you have sent us the ways youve been coping with the lockdown, from sketching to baking to quilting. Carrie fisher pascuale has been typing her way out of isolation. You know, a lot of people are feeling robbed, and theyre feeling trapped right now. Theyre feeling so cut off. But there are certain things that youre never cut off from. Reporter 9yearold alex nagorny found joy. It is called magic. Reporter in fi figuring out how to digitally disappear. Thats the part i like, but i dont like to not be seeing my friends. Reporter and that, at the end of the day, is really how we all feel. Were all grieving the loss of community, even as we begin to step back out. I think once we resolve the physiological aspects of this pandemic, were still going to have to deal with all of the unresolved issues of new fears of the public. Reporter isolation may linger just as long as the virus does. And while it is an unnatural human condition, our experience of being alone could just inspire a new way of living. All crises are opportunities to go back to first principles, decide what really matters, readjust our lives, and lead a life that is fundamentally more nutritious for our spirits and souls. Reporter may 17th, 1980, 40 years ago today, was a Beautiful Day on the mountain in southwest washington. It was also the most significant day of carolyn driedgers life. She and a colleague had traveled to the active volcano moun mt. St. Helens. They is planned to stay the night, but a geologist warned them against it. He said, lets just have as few people here as possible. We were have disappointed we were not going to spend the night looking at this beautiful volcano. The sun was just starting to set, and i took a couple of last photos of mt. St. Helens. Reporter the very next morning, mt. St. Helens erupted. Theyre calling it the most violent eruption of this volcano in 32 years. The energy that came out of volcano is bigger than any Nuclear Weapon we have in our arsenal. The whole northern flank of the volcano collapsed, and that let out this burst of pressure that had been building up inside the volcano. Reporter the blast triggered the largest landslide in recorded history, and flattened trees for 220 square miles, with a cloud of smoke, ash, and pumice. In all, 57 people died. It was the first clear weekend that had happened in the year 1980, so a lot of people in the surrounding area simply made plans to go out camping and hiking. They werent even watching the volcano necessarily. Reporter two exclusion zones had been set up to try to keep people safe, while still allowing weyerhaeuser logging trucks to harvest timber on the side of the mountain. There were a lot of people who wanted to get to their properties, but geologists would issue warnings, saying we think it is too dangerous. Reporter then, as of now, debate raged over whether to protect peoples livelihoods or their lives. They had to put a road block up to keep tourists out. If it is so dangerous, why are we still here. I think the whole thing is just ridiculous. Reporter ridiculously deadly, it would turn out. In fact, scientists had drawn up new, larger boundaries, which might have saved lives, but the plans sat on then governor dixie lee rays desk as she attended a rhodennirin festival. When the volcano erupted, 1500 feet of the mountain vaporized in seconds, killing people as far away as 20 miles. I think people would think a cloud of dust and debris, you know, doesnt seem that dangerous. This was more than a cloud. It was more like a stone hurricane, essentially. A hurricane made up of pulpulvarized stone. Reporter one of the first to die, geologist david johnston. He hundre happened plan to be on the mountain that day. He was filling in for her colleague, don johnston. He had taken my place on saturday night. Reporter in the 45 seconds before the cloud hit, he was able to radio out one last morning, telling the vancouver monitoring station, this is it. This body has never been found. You can see those trees down there that were cut off flat, he were you in awas in anarea that was logged. Reporter in the end, the only reason there wasnt a greater loss of life is because it was a sunday, so fewer people were working on and around the mountain. Today trees and wildlife are returning to mt. St. Helens, but 40 years later, in the midst of a different kind of catastrophe, it is hard not to wonder if weve learned all we could have from that sunny sunday in 1980. Pauley mount st. Reporter and thats just one of many small miracles were starting to see across the country disappointed graduates discovering pom and silver linings, as schools get creative with banner tributes and parades. And some are planning drivein graduates. Here in indianapolis, it is cap and gone. It is not the memories they thought they would have, but it is different and unique, is something they will remember forever. Reporter scott is band member at fergus high school. Hereco he is playing for his high school graduation, all 20 parts. It took him two fullni days to make thisnr videoni for his students. It is educators like him and parents, who are pulling out all of the stops to make this a graduation to remember. So it is our hope when they graduates look back in hindsight at 2020, they wont dwell on what was lost, but what was found, and what was left completely unaffected, moments like this one. Very proud. A father couldnt be much prouder than i am right now, of my daughter, gabrielle. Reporter and theirs is the only graduation speech that matters. Pauley this pandemic has put a lot of summer vacations on hold, but Connor Knighton has sent us a postcard from a faraway place you can visit from home. A few years ago, i took a trip to the faroe islands. The collection is officially part of the kingdom of denmark, and is easily one of the most piewfbeautiful places ive ever been. I was hoping to go back for a vacation again this year, but obviously that has changed. We havent had any tourists for seven or eight weeks. Reporter levi hanssen works for the tourism bureau. When we met back in 2017, he mentioned it could sometimes be challenging to attract visitors to a place that most tourists have never heard of. We realize we live in a very remote place, and we have this feeling sometimes of being david against goliath. Reporter but the tourism has steadily been on the rise. 2020 was set to be a recordbreaking year. This was definitely going to be our busiest year. We have two new Hotels Opening up it doesnt sound like a lot, but in the faroe islands, thats a lot. Reporter those Hotel Reservations are all canceled now. The guys who hopped on to boats, horses, and helicopters. Its a bit surreal to know were being controlled by a person in a completely different country, many, many miles away. As you can see, the houses are quite close together. Reporter if there is something you want to get a closer look at, a press of the button transmits a live instruction to the guide. Whats the percentage of helpful versus messing with you . Have people just been making you jump left and right . We considered that a lot before we did this. Most people have been very helpful. But there have been a few cheeky people who have asked us to run and jump a lot. Reporter i was one of those cheeky people. When i got my turn at the controls during one of the tours, i couldnt resist putting levi through his paces. I think it is time to run to those sheep. Youre going to make me run again . Reporter laughing im sorry, buddy. While the guides will often make suggestions about where theyd like you to steer them id asked you to steer me to the left reporter youre given the final say. Pauley je Jerry Seinfeld is a comedian equally at home on television and the standup stagech this stage. This morning he is in conversation with tracy smith. Reporter sorry, jerry. Thats okay, tracy. Hi. Your house looks very nice. Why, thank you. Reporter after years of watching Jerry Seinfeld on tv, it was kind of strange to have him watching me. I know those two lamps, where everything was done very carefully, but i have to tell you, it was a very Pleasant Place to be. Well, thank you. It is so weird to be able to see into peoples houses this way, isnt it . I know. Most of them are quite sad. You realize, oh, theyre not special people, theyre just people. Thank you reporter and to him, people are still the most Fertile Ground for funny. Human beings like to be close together because it makes it easier for us to judge and criticize. [laughter] reporter in his new netflix special 23 hours to kill, Jerry Seinfeld is back doing what he loves among the people he loves. But only to a point. This could be my favorite spot in the entire world, right here, right now. [applause] this in fact is my favorite type of intimate relationship. [laughter] i love you, you love me, and we will never meet. [laughter] reporter it struck me, watching 23 hours to kill, even though it was clearly taped before the world shut down, it was somehow amazingly on point. Im wondering if for you, watching it now, you felt that way . What do you mean by that . Reporter there were some lines in there, one was when you were talking about your relationship with the audience, i love you, you love me, and we never meet. Oh, yes. Oh, right, that does kind of fit this moment, doesnt it. Were together, but were really not. Even though youre life does pretty much suck and i know that because i know that everyones life sucks your life sucks, and my life sucks, too, perhaps not quite as much. [laughter] reporter and the whole idea that everyones life sucks actually seems pretty appropriate right now . Yes. But it is also great that youre alive. You can get excited about a bowl of cereal now that you really couldnt before this. If it is 12 00 and you kind of want to eat something before bed and you go and look and there are frosted flakes in the cupboard, it is so great. What is the idea of the buffet . Well, things are bad, how can we make it worse . [laughter] why dont we put people that are already struggling with portion control. [laughter]. Into some kind of debauched caligua. A food. Reporter i know you like to go out and test material in clubs. How are you testing material now . I have no idea what is funny right now. Reporter at the moment, his audience is his wife, jessica, and his three children. Do you try material on your family . Yes, i do. Reporter are your teenagers willing listeners . Yeah, theyll listen, but it is not easy. Because there is Nothing Better than to look at your dad and go, ah, i dont know about that one. The phones keep getting smarter; why dont we . Reporter seinfeld is hoping to take his new show on the road soon. But for now, that other show is finding a new audience. You want bread . Nothing for you [laughter] reporter you know, seinfeld the series has been on a zillion lists of the thing to quaranstream or to binge watch right now. Quaranstream, thats a new one. I didnt know that one. Oh, newman reporter he says seinfeld is timeless in part because it came out before smartphones. So maybe thats part of it, seinfeld was set in the 90s, but, cmon, you think there is a little more to it . Is it kind of comfort food in a way . Well, its funny. Its funny, but no phones is a nice thing. There is always texting now in every story they tell you. It is nice to have just people and faces. Youre saying you want a piece of me. I could drop you like a bag of dirt. [laughter] reporter and talk about timeless, the great Jerry Stiller passed away just a few days after we talked with seinfeld. In a tweet, seinfeld said that stillers comedy would live forever. Of course, seinfelds new show is funny, too, but what really makes it special isnt just the jokes. It is the sight of the audience laughing together, shoulder to shoulder. The other thing that struck me, i also felt a little sentimental, seeing the crowd there together, people enjoying a laugh in a crowded theater. And i wonder, do you worry that thats gone forever . No, it wont be gone forever. This cant last forever, any more than we can last forever. This is a virus that is, in show business terms, got a lucky break. It is having its good moment now, but it is going to be tired, it is going to get over. And pretty soon people are going to go, you know what . Youve had your time, move on.
