Theres been a debate between the supervisors and Public Health officer on which businesses should open next and how quickly those businesses should open. Supervisors push for this as they listen to concerns from local businesses but now they have received feedback from the community. At the state capitol, the governor unveiled a new Budget Proposal that calls for a 10 pay cut for all state employees including himself and spending reductions across the board. We could see even deeper cuts if the federal government fails to provide billions of dollars in pandemic assistance. Thats why Governor Newsom is pleading with congress to pass a 3 trillion stimulus bill up for a vote in the house tomorrow. The bill would provide nearly 1 trillion for state and local governments along with another round of direct payments to american households. Senate Republican Leaders say theres no urgency for more aid at this time and that some items in the bill do not pertain to coronavirus relief. President trump has called the plan dead on arrival. Today Governor Newsom said congress has a responsibility to act now. The federal government has a moral and ethical and economic obligation to help support the states. After all, what is the point of government if not to protect people, their safety, and the wellbeing of citizens. The bill has also faced criticism from democrats. Progressives say it doesnt go far enough while some moderates say theyre worried about the cost. But as kpix 5 joe vazquez reports, the company has no plans to return that money. Varitas investments says its true. The company applied for a federal Small Business loan and received it to theun of 3. 6 million. The company says it qualifies for the loan as it has fewer than 200 employees. The federal Paycheck Protection Program or ppp is earmarked for Small Businesses which it defines as companies with fewer than 500 workers. They did it fair and square, but its not right. Reporter San Francisco supervisor aaron pesken says varitas doesnt deserve the money. Veritas has done a number of things not acceptable to this society. Reporter kpix has profiled dozens of tenants suing, accusing the company of harassing rent controlled tenants with constant renovations. Other tenants say theyve endured rent increases as veritas passes along its mortgage debt. A lot of times theyll say its shocking and also not surprising given the history of veritas in San Francisco. Reporter brad herd is organizer with the housing rights committee. He says they should give the money back or share it with other businesses including tenants. Most tenants are paying rent. Theyre making those hard choices. Theyre giving unemployment or stimulus checks to their landlords. So this notion that they are losing revenue, that theyre a Small Business, its insulting to the actually Small Businesses. Reporter it issued a statement, saying it will use the money to bring back furloughed workers. Quote, with our revenue deeply impacted and a lack of access to capital, we furloughed significant portions of our staff and implemented salary cuts across the board. The ppp loan enables us to save the jobs of front line employees and is critical to our business operations. Joe vazquez, kpix 5. According to the census bureau, about 75 of eligible businesses requested ppp loans. 38 of Small Businesses actually receive that money. We could even hear rumbles of thunder by midday on sunday. Its not going to rain everywhere all the time but this is going to be a rain system that sends waves of rain forward. Its going to be pointed toward the Pacific Northwest but were going to get enough rain out of this. Another wave on monday. Yet another wave of showers is likely on tuesday. Finally that starts to wind down by tuesday night but its going to leave behind on average about a quarter inch to a half inch of total rainfall across the bay area.
