At the same time, social distancing restrictions are being loosened in more states despite none showing a twoweek decline in coronavirus cases as laid out in federal health guidelines. The food and Drug Administration is green lighting emergency use of an antiviral drug that was found to shorten the Recovery Time for patients. The nations death toll from the coronavirus now tops 65,000. On friday, the last patient was discharged from the Field Hospital at new york citys Main Convention center. That is where Michael George begins our coverage this morning. Good morning. Reporter jeff, good morning. But youre going to have to go into the water and get me. Reporter a university of minnesota report released friday points out the dangers of that attitude. The director of the Infectious Disease research and policy center spearheaded the study. That virus will keep transmitting as long as it has susceptible people that it can get at. If we isolated everybody in their own bubble it would be the end. Reporter texas allowed retailers and restaurants to open yesterday, just one day after the state reported a record high singleday death toll. We have a long ways to go in terms of the number of people yet to be infected. We estimate between 5 and 15 of the u. S. Populations been infected. And this virus will not slow down its transmission until we get to 60 to 70 . Reporter for governors basing policy on Scientific Data and trying to hold the line on reopening, the message is simple were not out of the woods. Were not out of the woods yet. Reporter maryland and virginia both reported their highest oneday increase in cases friday. But many who are eligible to return to work may not go back. [ honking ] in pennsylvania, a mock funeral procession underlined the point that meat packers all over are putting their health first. There and at tyson foods in nebraska, workers stayed home until their concerns about health and safety in often cramped concerns are addressed. In the broadest survey to date, the centers for Disease Control reported there have been almost 5,000 covid19 cases and 20 deaths at 115 meat and poultry processing plants in the 19 states that reported data. But Triumph Foods pork plant in st. Joseph, missouri, is demonstrating what could be the new normal testing all workers before they can go into the plant. Wanted to get ahead of the wave instead of behind the wave. Reporter when 92 workers tested positive, they werent allowed in. A plant this size can stay in operation, still doing what they do to keep the Food Supply Chain open, and yet still test all their employees simultaneously. Reporter and here in new york, the epicenter of the outbreak, the governor is taking a more cautious approach. Schools will be closed for the rest of the Academic School year. Some businesses like construction and manufacturing could reopen in about two weeks. And as the warm weather moves in this weekend, people are being told to continue social distancing. Michelle . The food and Drug Administration approved an emergency order for remdesivir friday. Its the first drug to show faster recovery rates in patients. Nikole killion is at the white house this morning. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you, michelle. The president and his Task Force Call this drug promising and a first step and will prioritize it to those seriously ill. Meantime, the president says he will use his time this weekend at camp david for calls and meetings all while social distancing. Ill be going to camp david for a working weekend. Reporter President Trump boarded marine one for camp david, his first trip outside of the white house since seeing off the u. S. Ennis comfort in late march. Any in the Oval Office Friday in the oval office, the president announced the food and Drug Administration has granted emergency use of remdesivir. Thats been the hot thing also in the papers and in the media for the last little while. An important treatment for hospitalized coronavirus patients. Reporter a recent Clinical Trial showed the antirhett viral drug could shorten Recovery Time in covid19 patients by an average of four days. Manufacturer guilliard sciences is donating 1. 5 million doses to the federal government with initial distribution to hospitals starting monday. There are patients out there that can benefit from this medicine today that are hospitalized. And we dont want any time to waste for that. Reporter the announcement comes as the Trump Administration ramps up work for a potential vaccine dubbed operation warp speed. Nothing has ever gone this fast. Reporter Kayleigh Mcenany made her debut in the white houses first briefing by a press secretary in more than a year. I will never lie to you. You have my word on that. Reporter the white house faced new scrutiny from a Congressional Panel seeking testimony next week from Task Force Member dr. Anthony fauci. A spokesperson for the House Appropriations committee stated we have been informed by an Administration Official that the white house has blocked dr. Fauci from testifying. The white house responded, while the Trump Administration continues its whole of government response to covid19, it is counterproductive to have the very individuals involved in those efforts appearing at congressional hearings. Cbs news has learned that fauci will appear before a senate panel later this month. The senates actually back to work on monday, and theres been some concern about that after the capitol physician warned there werent enough tests for all of the senators. Last night the Health Secretary said that 1,000 rapid test kits and machines will be available. Testing at the center of everything. Thank you very much. Here with more on the coronavirus developments is cbs news medical contributor dr. David agus. Dr. Agus, lets start with remdesivir. We know that its not the silver bullet. What can you tell us about why this is having an impact and how that may impact other drugs that theyre looking at as far as treatment Going Forward . So remdesivir, originally developed for ebola but works in this disease. About a fourday shorter hospitalization and 30 reduction in death rate when given to people who either have new mexicos pneumonias on xray or are short of breath. Classically when you treat seriously ill patients with viral drugs, they work okay. When you move it earlier, they work dramatically better. Exciting. For the first time i can walk into a pishtatients room and s have a drug that i think can benefit you. I couldnt do that really until this week. It is an optimistic moment in the fight against this disease. And we will take everything right now. One of the things that also came out late at the end of this week and stands out is this idea it could be two more years with the university of Minnesota Study saying that it could be two more years before we have this immunity. That feels, a, so long aways, and how do we get to the point . Youre talking about twothirds of the world, and were talking about still sheltering in place. How do we get there . Well, its oneword answer. A very simple word, vaccine. Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine. And this week we heard positive news out of Oxford University about a vaccine that when given to monkeys, they were challenged with the virus. For 28 days, no symptoms at all. And this vaccine is being scaled because theres a similar vaccine that had been used for another virus. Its skipping the early safety studies and going into 6,000 patients the next month, and theyre starting productions of millions of doses so the hope is by the end of the summer there are millions of doses available and its been shown to work. There are about 100 other efforts with vaccines going on, so major vaccinate and will increase herd immunity in the world. That feels far away. What about in the meantime . Weve heard so much about we need to have more testing in order to live with this disease and open up as some states are doing right now. Where do we stand in that regard . Well, you and i have had this discussion unfortunately many times over the last weeks. We need a lot more testing in this country. We need testing for who has the virus, and we still in the United States of america do not have a test for immunity. That is who had the virus and is immune at the present time. Those are critical in my mind to safe opening. You know, we saw a few minutes ago a meat packing plant that was testing employees before they came in. That is awesome. We need to do more in this country. Do what we call surveillance testing. Testing groups of patients in different racial backgrounds, different ethnic backgrounds, different parts of the city to see where asymptomatic cases lie so we can go in those areas and stay at home there so we dont spread. That Antibody Test is key. Thank you, dr. David agus. Democratic president ial candidate joe biden emphatically denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a former Senate Staffer in the early 90s. Tara reade said she filed a complaint against biden, but he says he doesnt believe one exists. Now bind is asking for secretary of the senate to release his records. Ed okeefe reports. Reporter in his first public remarks since the allegations surfaced, joe biden on friday explicitly denied the assault. Im saying unequivocally it never, never happened, and it didnt. Never happened. Reporter tara reade, a 28yearold staffer in bidens Senate Office in 1993, says he assaulted her in a capitol hill hallway. I remember his hands underneath my blouse and underneath my skirt. And his fingers penetrating me. Reporter reade says she later complained to the Senate Personnel office but that her complaint didnt mention sexual assault. On friday, biden called for the release of any record of reades complaint. If its there, put it out. But ive never seen it. Reporter Senate Personnel records are managed by the secretary of the senate who didnt respond to requests for comment. Some have questioned whether theres a mention of reade in bidens personal Senate Papers housed at the university of delaware. Biden insists there isnt and said he doesnt want them released yet because theyre mostly political. All of that to be fodder in a campaign at this time, i dont know of anybody whos done anything like that. Reporter last year, reade recounted what she considered to be inappropriate touching by biden. In march she made the more serious allegation of assault. Biden didnt directly answer if he remembered her. Do you remember her . I dont remember any type of complaint she may have made. It was 27 years ago. Reporter the Campaign Later said that biden did not remember her. President trump whos been accused by more than a dozen women of Sexual Misconduct said friday he found reade to be credible. But i would just say to joe biden, just go out and fight it. Its you know, one of those things. Reporter late friday an attorney named bill jeffers who led the vetting of biden for barack obama before he chose biden to be his Vice President ial running mate back in 2008 told me that during their six to eightweek investigation of bidens backgrounbac background, there were never allegations of Sexual Misconduct against biden. When i asked whether the name tara reade or her accusation says ever came up in their investigation, jeffers said no, that hed only learned about her last week. Jeff . Interesting. Ed okeefe, thank you so much. After weeks of speculation concerning his health, north koreas elusive leader kim jongun has resurfaced according to staterun media who released pictures of the 36yearold dictator opening a Fertilizer Factory north of the capital. Ramy inocencio is in tokyo to put the rumors surrounding kim jongun to rest. Reporter north koreas leader kim jongun is alive and is looking for vel. This after the past three weeks of speculation, crazed speculation really, that he might be gravely ill, in a vegetative state, or even dead. To cheering crowds, north koreas leader kim jongun reappeared to his people and the world very much living and breathing. Staterun media showed him cutting a ribbon at an Opening Ceremony of a Fertilizer Factory 30 miles north of pyongyang friday. Touring the grounds with aides and filmed smoking a cigarette. April 11th was the last time kim was seen in Public Meeting his top advisers. But on april 15th, he missed the countrys biggest holiday the birthday of his late grandfather, north koreas founder, leading some Media Outlets to speculate about his health. Satellite images later showed kim jonguns train near his private resort on the countrys east coast. That did not prove or disapprove kim was there or even alive. Only adding to the mystery. Kim jonguns disappearance had thrust talks about possible successors into the spotlight. With his younger sister, 31yearold tim yojong floated as a prime candidate. Analyst Robert Carlin unless shes built up a power base in recent years, i dont think she would be anointed. Reporter if she became the first female leader, she would also presumably control the countrys estimated 30 to 40 nuclear weapons, and any further development of its Intercontinental Ballistic Missile program. With the continental United States a possible target. Now that kim jongun is alive, this lends some credibility to the theory out there that maybe he was just social distancing from coronavirus, just like pretty much everyone else in the world. The bottom line for north korea is it is a country that is very opaque, and any information about it has to be taken with a lot of skepticism. For cbs this Morning Saturday, ramy inocencio, tokyo. Brazil has now surfaced chinas official death toll from the coronavirus. The countrys president continues to downplay the threat from the virus. That is raising concerns that outbreaks in latin america could lead to another wave of infections here in the United States. Manuel bojorquez has that part of the story. We do want to warn you, some of the images in this report are graphic. Reporter there is no denying the coronavirus is ravaging brazil. Topping 90,000 confirmed cases and with more than 6,000 deaths, the president who sneered at the threat from the start, said this about the rising toll so what, im sorry, what do you want me to do . Instead, local officials were left to implement lockdowns. Brazils crowded, poor neighborhoods are fertile breeding grounds. Here disinfecting is often do it yourself. Meanwhile, bolsonaro joined antilockdown protesters, no masks or social distancing here despite the grim situation throughout the region. Ecuador is suffering one of the worst outbreaks. In its largest city, some bodies went uncollected for days. The president s cabinet secretary told us this week that both new cases and deaths have decreased dramatically in recent weeks but did confirm the countrys official death toll in the hundreds is a vast undercount. We assume there could be more than 6,700 deaths due to coronavirus, but we cant prove it because the testing wasnt done. He told me social distancing here worked, but it was a tough sell given half the nations workers are part of the inform am economy, largely street vendors. We know that in ecuador it is fundamental to get back to work, he said, adding some restrictions will be in certain plays. Latin americas fight against the virus is far from over. That could end up saving lives and money. Kris van cleave explains. Reporter two bostonarea teens died when this speeding pickup lost control and crashed late last month. Increasingly, fatal accidents like this are on the decline as the pandemic has drivers staying home. Please dont come out and drive unless you absolutely have to. Reporter california Highway Patrol captain salvadore saurez says that message is working. Traffic is down 35 , leading to wideopen l. A. Freeways. Fire personnel, ambulances, law enforcement, they could utilize our freeway systems and be able to get from call to call a lot faster. Novartis thanks the heroic healthcare workers fighting covid19. Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the deadly shootings at Kent State University in ohio. A key event during the vietnam war era. Four students were killed, and nine were wounded when National Guard troops opened fire during an antiwar protest. Much has changed in the five decades that have passed. For those who were there that day, the events remain fresh in their minds, worthy of reflection. May 4th, 1970. It was a beautiful, sunny morning. And i had an english class that i went to. And it was kind of surreal because there was some heavy military presence on campus. One of you grab the shotgun reporter nearly 1,000 ohio National Guardsmen were on the Kent State University campus where john cleary was nearing the end of his freshman year. The guardsman were called after a mass of protesters vandalized buildings and set fires to the universitys rotc building. There was just a lot of people like me that were going to class and just curious as to what was going on. And there was probably in the thousands people just observing. [ bell ] about 3,000 students had gathered on the commons. Not all but many there to rally against the invasion of cambodia even the protest had been banned. Some chanted or threw rocks when ordered to disperse. Leave this area immediately. When teargas was ineffective, the guard advanced, forcing demonstrators to retreat. They did not fire. They got up, and they began to march back up the hill. And just before i was going to go into taylor hall to get ready for my classes, i thought im going to get one more picture just as they reached the crest of the hill. They suddenly turned and fired. [ gunfire ] being naive and not realizing the danger i was in, i didnt duck for cover. And got hit in the chest with a bullet. It just knocked plea down. A student photographer captured that moment which later captured the attention of the nation. When you see the photos that convinced people of the shooting, it wasnt done by professionals. It was done all by students. John filo is the Vice President of photography at viacom cbs. On may 4th, 1970, he was a kept state senior also shooting pictures. He wanted to document the essence of the student protest, but instead found himself in the line of fire. By the time i got the camera back around to my eye, it was over. The shooting was over, you know. I never hit the ground, i never just stood there like a flatfooted idiot. In shock . Yeah. Youre looking and you see this body, you know, behind me, down on the pavement. And the blood is the volume of blood is enormous. Reporter it was something filo knew had to be seen to be believed. He took pictures. You could see in the one frame the girls running up. She knees beside the body, and i said, i got to get got to get it was almost in profile, let me get more head on. Then she let out with a scream, and you shot. This photograph of mary kneeling over one of four students killed that day would fin filo a pulitzer prize. What did you think when you saw the image that we now know . I was relieved. Now i knew i actually took the picture. It wasnt just in your mind. It wasnt in my mind. I had that moment of doubt because it was such a shocking the adrenaline rush of being shot at and surviving. Reporter filos picture would inspire a protest anthem. Ohio performed by crosby, stills, nash, and young. This summer i hear the drumming forgetting ohio after the kent state shootings, more than four Million Students protested across the United States. I think its remembered in large part because so many students felt that it could have been them. Reporter thomas grace was one of nine wounded that day. I was hit in the left heel, and it just took the right side of my left foot off. Reporter now a history professor, grace wrote kent state death and descent in the 60s that looked at what happened and why. He and others said an audio recording contains evidence of an order to fire. Eight guardsmen were downtowned in 1973 for their indicted in 1976 for their involvement, but the case was thrown out the following year. Grace believes the federal investigation should be reopened even 50 years later. So it helps us to understand better what took place there. And that there was some degree of foresight on the part of the National Guard in terms of what they did. The National Guard always maintained that they fired in defense of their lives. Reporter civil discourse and continued dialogue surrounding the kent state shootings is in part what has motivated the annual commemorations of that day, including this years virtual ceremony. Capping off a yearlong observance of the half century gone by. And while may 4th, 1970, has personal meaning for those who were there like john cleary, they are the first to remind us its a day we all can and should learn from. I know ive had people that said, you mean there were military on campus . And they actually shot people . And they dont have a clue as to what happened on may 4th. Reporter what is the danger of people not knowing what happened that day . The danger is that its forgotten, and that it could conceivably happen again. I think to remember and honor the four students who were slain gives some weight and hopefully prohibits that kind of action in the future. That commemoration is so important to those who were there. You have to remember it took almost 20 years for the university to actually acknowledge that day. They do have a beautiful memorial that is there now, and jeff, the words that are on part of it, inquire, learn, and respect, so important to all the men that we spoke with. Sounds like good advice. Horrifying to see the pictures and to hear john vividly talk about what happened back then. Thank you very much. The details. Yeah. In the democratic republic of congo, theres growing fear that the illness could spread to the countrys magnificent mountain gorillas. Deborah patta has the story. Reporter it is one of africas most electrifying adventures coming face to face with the Majestic Mountain gorilla. There are around 1,000 left in the world. Their numbers have been depleted by Climate Change and poachers snares. Now they face an even more devastating threat. Up close and personal. These gorillas may look invincible, but theyre susceptible to the same diseases as us. We filmed these gorillas during a recent trip to the democratic republic of congo. Then the threat was ebola. Now theres a new unvisible enemy, the coronavirus. While the pandemic sweeping the globe has not yet reached the gorilla population, conservationists are on high alert. As you can see, its been very difficult to monitor the human cases. You imagine for wild animals moving freely, that is one of the big challenges. Reporter vets like dr. Eddie canbali who work for the Nonprofit Organization gorilla doctors, can deeply are de concerned because infections are amongst the leading cause of death among the gorillas. If you have a case for that, we will definitely have a big loss among those animals. Reporter when we visited the gorillas, it took us about an hour to reach a family of 44. Already social distancing was being practiced long before the world knew about the coronavirus. We had to wear masks to protect the gorillas from any potential diseases we may be carrying. And stand at least 23 feet away. Today, that kind of upclose and personal experience has been stopped. The park is closed to visitors. These images were taken before the global pandemic. Here gorillas are being treated for routine illnesses that can occur. Now measures are more stringent. Rangers and vets have to stand at least 33 feet away. Oly two people can approach a gorilla at any one time, and most of the observation is done at a distance through binoculars. We have been able to observe if the animals require hospitalizations. You can see the chest, how his breathing is, in and out, so it can slow down the movement. Reporter in a country devastated by over two decades of civil war, there is a wonderful incongruent here in that it also offers one of the worlds most lifeaffirming experiences. An experience conservationists are determined to preserve. Debora patta for cbs this Morning Saturday, johannesburg, south africa. That is all ahead. But first, a new warning that the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. Researchers at the university of minnesota say the outbreak could last as long as two years and wont be controlled until twothirds of the worlds population is immune. This as social distancing restrictions are being loosened in more than 30 states. The food and Drug Administration has approved emergency use of the antiviral drug remdesivir. It was found to shorten the Recovery Time for hospitalized covid19 patients. The death toll from the virus has topped 65,000 in the u. S. Frustration with stayathome orders and the economic toll they are taking brought protesters out in droves throughout california on friday. Also on friday, the last coronavirus patient was discharged from new york citys Main Convention center, the javits center. It was converted into a Field Hospital to treat the overflow from Emergency Rooms during that outbreak. Democratic president ial candidate joe biden is denying allegations that he sexually assaulted former Senate Aide Tara Reade in the early 90s. Reade claims biden assaulted her in a capitol hill hallway. She says she later complained to the Senate Personnel office. On friday, biden called for the secretary of the senate to release any record of reades complaint. Will have a right to be heard, and the pressure to vigorously investigate the claims they make. Ill always uphold that principle. In every case the truth is what matters. In this case, the truth is the claims are false. Last year, reade recounted what she considered to be inappropriate touching by biden. Then in march, she made the more serious allegation of sexual assault. From outbreak to contagion, hollywood has produced several films about pandemics. Now the business itself is going through one, and the disruption is severe. Production has come to a standstill. The big summer movie season is in doubt. Some major pictures are skipping theaters and opening directly in our homes. For more, were joined by news contributor derek thompson, staff writer at the atlantic. Good morning to you. Even with some states lifting restrictions, the question is will people be ready to go back to the movies with the fear of the virus on poems minds . And then peoples minds . And then what do theater operators to get people back in those seats . The short answer to your first question is americans are not ready to go back to Movie Theaters. In a recent Morning Consult poll it found that 69 of americans said they are extremely unlikely or somewhat unlikely to go back to Movie Theaters. You have seven out of ten people who would go to the theaters saying i wouldnt do it right now even if the theaters were open. Thats because a virus, a plague like this is a tax on crowds. Its a tax on crowds in attacks on crowds in Movie Theaters and sports stadiums. Those are the businesses that will take the long toast get back to normal. When it comes what can the Movie Theaters do, theres two answers. One answer is that they cant really do much unless we get a hold on the disease itself. They need to hope that americans get healthier, that the hospitals begin to fill a to stopping so full, and we need to have antiviral drugs that can bring this under wraps. At the same time, i think theyre talking about things like close like chessboard seating, zig zag, so you dont have people clustered, instead fill it to 25 , 50 capacity, and i sit people in zig zags that no one is in the breath line of somebody else. Those are the sort of measures you could imagine coming back to Movie Theaters the next few months. Interestingme ininteresting. Also the studios in a major bond. Reopening hollywood is going to be complicated want its not just an easy fix. Warner bros. Is firmly sticking with this july 17th release date of christopher nolands muchanticipated movie tenant. That is one in particular. Whats the risk there . Well, the risk is its fairly straightforward. Its that germany 17th july 17th will come and americans will still not want to go to Movie Theaters. I think the Strategic Thinking is we have this movie from christopher nolan, the ambassador of the cinematic experience in a Movie Theater. Maybe well get lucky. Maybe americans will feel healthy. Maybe theyll be there will be weather effects that affect the reproduce iuoducereproducea have a slowdown in terms of transmission, and so more americans might be able to feel like they can go out to Movie Theaters in july and then will own july and august from a Movie Theater perspective because tenant will be the only movie around. Rather than see one of 17 shows, people will be going to the tenant theater, going to see one movie. I think thats the bet. If they can mop lies that window of time when the transmissibility of the disease will enter a slow period. On march 11th, the Trolls World Tour was released across digital platforms earning the studio nearly 100 million in rental fees in three weeks. Has this forced hollywood to reexamine their distribution model . I think theres a lot of things right now that are forcing hollywood to reexamine the distribution model. Most of it isnt something that they recognized in the last week, its accelerating trends that preexisted the pandemic. You know, people understood that americans were buying fewer tickets to Movie Theatersment they understood they were watching more at home. You saw this explosion of streaming opportunities and of rental and buying opportunities just like this. I do think that the experience of trolls and some other movies might encourage movie studios to sort of pull forward the future even faster. Theyll say, okay, were looking at that Movie Theater business which has for a century been the cornerstone of our business but wont be for the next century. How do we find ways to get our best stuff to people where they live, and thats on their couch right now. A lot of movies. I was looking forward to seeing them. Im going to have to wait. Thank you. But whats inside one chicago companys machines is anything but common. Instead of chips and candy, theyre stocked with fresh and healthy dishes with a gourmet touch. And the company says theyre not going to stop until theres a fresh food vending machine near you. Fresh, whole ingredients, those are the Building Blocks of farmers fridge. Weve got to suit up . Frustrated with the lack of quick, healthy choices, sanders created this easytouse machine that delivers chef cureiated meals at the curated nielsen push of a button. Its fresh foods, isnt that an oxymoron . I think thanks to farmers fridge it no longer is. Reporter the meals come in readytouse recyclable jars and include a variety of salads, sandwiches, desserts, and chips and guacamole. The food is only one part of the equation. It all began with this prototype. A stripped down and souped up version of the Old Fashioned machine. Not an easy task to convert considering all of its moving parts. The whole idea was you can take this ugly old vending machine, and if you really think about the customer experience, you can make it feel like something more. So the idea was how do we make people feel like this is a restaurants experience . One way is with partnerships like the one for bread with james beard awardwinning baker greg wade. How does the machine work . It fridge actually keeps track of temperature. The inventory. And the way it works is every single day we load the inventory in the fridge. All that food that we made we can allocate across the food network overnight. Reporter isnt there a brain inside that says, ah, this slads been in too long . Yeah. Thats a huge part of what makes this possible. If you were to find a fridge on a sunday night, we hadnt been there yet it wouldnt let you buy some of the products because theyre past their prime. What . Yeah. It wouldnt let you buy it . Yes. We say, were not letting you buy this. It would be safe to eat, but from a quality perspective we shut it off. Reporter the quality and recipes that appeal to a wide variety of taste is the job of emily stucker. Are our palates so fried from processed food . Real humans actually put it into the jar. And then we have a date coder metal detection and labeling at the end. Reporter whats the production yields . Well do 20,000 to 25,000 units a day. Reporter start what started with one fridge in pay food court has expanded to over 400 machines in six states. At first i had the idea for farmers fridge. People would say, no one wants to buy food from a vending machine. Yeah, i would imagine peoples first reaction. I said, i dont think youre right. I have enough money in my savings account and credit cards to prove you guys wrong. He doesnt plan to stop until he does. How far do you see the Business Model going . I think the business goes until everybodys eating food from vending machines and feeling like thats a great, convenient option. So really what weve always said is were not going to stop until a salad is as successful as a candy bar. We shot the story before the pandemic hit. Currently, farmers fridge is serving at least 30,000 meals each week across more than 140 Health Care Facilities during this crisis. The company is taking a 25 off the price, off all frontline locations. Those prices were originally between 6 and 12. Good for them. Not sure we want all our food coming from vending machines, michelle, but the salads are very, very, very good. Why not . Nice piece, michelle. As we continue to spotlight a new book each week during the shutdown, we turn to lincoln on the verge. The true story about what may have been the most difficult moment in this nations history and the extraordinary trip directly in the middle of it. Author ted whitmer details how our nations 16th president survived those pivotal 13 days. November, 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected in a fourway contest with just under 40 of the vote but enough to make him the 16th president. Storm clouds gathered for months before lincoln was finally able to set off for the white house by train with everything on the line. When he left on his trip, hed just been elected president. One would think hes pretty happy to be to be moving forward and doing this. He wasnt. It was the worst president ial transition in our history for him and really for everyone because it was anything but a joyful event. His election immediately led to southern promises that they would secede and then they start to do it. Reporter the book lincoln on the verge, details the chaos, hijinx, deadly threats, and narrow escapes during 13 days on the rails. At the time he makes this trip, seven states have already seceded. Right. More to come. More to come, but crucially the ones they were the most worried about did not secede while he was on the train. So maryland might have gone, and if maryland goes, theres no way he can get to washington. The winding route that began in springfield, illinois, zigged and zagged across seven states before eventually arriving in d. C. The railroad is behind a lot of lincolns career. He loved railroads, and he was a railroad lawyer. And as i argue in the book, the train is a very important symbol for him of progress. Trains could go 60, 70 miles per hour. Lincoln is moving along pretty fast in parts of this route. And the cars he sat in were quite plush. Hed come a long way from his log cabin. And i described these sort of elegant sofas and setees and the paintings like an air force one that hes moving along on. That was part of the allure. People not only wanted to see lincoln, they wanted to see these elegant drains. The president trains. The president ial train coming through their small town. Its not just lincoln that is exciting to people but the idea of the presidency itself which it had become pretty weak in the 1850s. After lincolns four years, the presidency will always be an important office. The biggest threat of the journey came from an alleged plot to assassinate the president elect in baltimore. Lincoln was never eager to talk about it, but widmer argues in detail it was very real. The miracle is that it did not succeed. We all know how lincolns listen ended in 1865, but i came away from the close study of the assassination plot in 1861 with a deep sense of gratitude that he made it at all. Reporter he says the plot to kill lincoln before he could take office was uncovered by dorthea dicks who had gained fame for her work with the mentally handicapped. She andin effect became a spy, t rooting out information. Alan pinkpinkerton and his agen were hired to root out the plot. Like a Mission Impossible team. They put on southern accents and infiltrate the plot and figure out the details. And thats how word gets to lincoln that hes got to go through baltimore in the middle of the night, which he does with Alan Pinkerton and one friend in an ordinary passenger seat at 4 00 in the morning. But a potential assassination while the gravest of the threats on this trip was not the only one. His son lost his inaugural address multiple times, welcoming committees were firing cannons toward the trains right. The country is falling apartment everything is going wrong, and he had to keep his cool. Sometimes his worst enemies were his friends. Sometimes when he came into a town, all of the windows in the train would shatter because people fired the guns too close to the train, or in one case, a cannon was fired into the train. So its its pretty haphazard. Hes trying to deal with all of that at the same time. I mean, hes a normal guy, too. Hes lincoln. He has these superhuman talents that are beginning to be discovered, but hes also just trying to get his family and his difficult kids and his difficult wife from stop to stop on a long train trip. Its a little bit like a chevy chase movie. Good reference with chevy chase. That came out of nowhere. Sounds about right, though. He kept it together mentally, and he was always funny when he needs to be. I mean, lincoln has a very quick wit. Always served him well as a candidate and as a president. But hes processing all of this deeply and thinking hard about a message that can bring all of these very different kind of people. And one of the main points of the book is hes seeing rural people, hes seeing city dwellers, hes seeing a lot of immigrants. And what is the special sauce that can keep all of these very different people together . And hes saying beautiful things about what it means to be american. Lyincoln was able to effectively harness and deliver the message he had been trying to get across from day one that saving the republic as it stands was the only option for americans then and now. I argue in the end of the book that if the u. S. Doesnt stay together, the cause of democracy is fatally weakened. It wasnt doing very well around the world when lincoln was elected. But by saving american democracy, i believe he saved the cause of democracy worldwide. And if the United States hadnt been one powerful country in the 20th century, i think we would have seen a very different final result in world war ii, and wed be living in a very different world today. That is quite something to think about, dana. And at last count, there were 15 about 15,000 books on lincoln, not all of them are worth reading. Lincoln on the verge is. Well, once you get a chevy chase reference in there, all i can think is, fletch, foul play, and now Abraham Lincoln, too. Great job. Jeff. It was something that was done in lincolns time, and centuries before baking bread at home. Well look at the rising popularity in the time of pandemic next. While we talk about the food on the pages within, the photos often go overlooked until this morning. Evan sung is a lifestyle and travel photographer behind some of those very delectable images. Hes found a way to combine his passions with his chefs foods to give us so much more than just a taste of the dishes. Lets see why reporter creating a great cookbook requires all the right ingredients. A collaboration of chef the lock is ready stylist can i tweet something and photographer. Crop. All must be aligned to capture the perfect plate. Gorgeous. Easier done than described according to acclaimed food photographer evan sung. Its hard to articulate sometimes. Its a feel of that looks right or something doesnt look right there. Every dish is a surprise. Every image is a little story youre trying to tell. The photographs, meant to complement the recipe for a dish, are works of art in their own right. Then yes, this chicken should come in. Uhhuh. The most exciting part of the cookbook for me has been the photography process. The dish itself looks good. And seeing a food come to life. Yeah. In a few months, this one from chef asha gomez and sung will end up in bookstores. I like that. Like that a lot. Like books on magic in sungs brooklyn neighborhood. This is a book we did with Padma Lakshmi and the amazing spice store calustians. Sung photographed a whos who was culinary royalty including sushi chef morimoto, butcher pat lafrieda, and baker dominique lasalle. Its the latest in sungs catalog which now fills an entire bookshelf. Any standouts that you can show me . Sure. We looked at 2015s senegal by harlem chef pierre chiam. The color is beautiful. The pair took three trips to capture chiams home country. I was excited to be seeing everything and meeting all these people, eating street food. The people are just amazing looking. The landscape, the wardrobe. So it was about capturing a whole country. Experiences like that inspire the 44yearold sung. Shooting food requires some sensitivity and technical knowhow. But shooting the food just by itself is not for me the end goal, you know. Its its connecting to something larger than that. When you first picked up that camera, could you have imagined what you are doing now . Not at all. Not at all. It feels like surfing in a way. You catch the wind, you catch the wave, and you kind of go. That way of thinking originally led sung to study philosophy at nyu. He was studying literature in california when he broke up with his girlfriend and abruptly moved home, taking refuge in his emerging hobby. Just felt like going home with my tail between my legs. And photography was something that was helping me process a lot of the stuff i was going through in california. Selfportraits, just exploring that creative side. Clay shea, im not sure, but it. Like a great outlet. My parents have been supportive and asked, do you think you can make any money doing it . I said i dont know, and theyre like, okay, well, good luck. He found work as an assistant in a stock photography studio before embarking on a longshot trip to paris. I decided, im an experienced assistant in new york. Should be no problem to find work out there. The hubris of youth. Exactly. Exactly. I went out. I had my savings, and i went out. I gave it a shot. I was out there for three weeks, four weeks. I met as many people as i could. And i just sort of felt like, well, i gave it a shot. Its not really going to work out. Then i met him. Him is giacomo bretzel, an italian photographer looking for an assistant. We hit it off. He said, what are you doing next week, im going to italy. I guess im going to italy. It taught me this little camera could open up so many doors and lead to amazing experiences. Aft after a year overseas, sung moved back to new york and picked up work for the new york sun. They assigned restaurant story. I said, oh, i know how to shoot food. I did that with my photographer in paris. And they liked it, and i liked it. It started from there. Through his camera, sung has seen the world. From senegal to iceland to Southern India where he traveled with atlanta chef asha gomez for the new york times. To see her so full of emotion seeing the country again and seeing the food again, the landscape was really just the most thrilling. Sung also shot her first cookbook, my two souths. Look at that. Just poof and theyve reunited for her second. He allows me to have my creative process. And only when he knows that my process is complete and i have put that plate of food down is when he starts his creative process. Should we see more noodle here yeah. Well hes capturing me and the essence of my food which i think is what makes a brilliant photographer. I love it. Its what he sees, but its not about him. Its about the food and about the chef thats made the food. Get that graham yes. When somebody picks up a cookbook that youve shot, what do you hope they take away from your photos . I mean, thats an interesting question. Where im really looking is with my collaborator. You know, i want them to take away from the image. Sort of whatever they have in their minds eye of what they do, that it feels like that. For the consumer out there, i want them to want the food. To have their appetite awakened and the desire to make it. Yeah, ultimately for me i could make it tighter the interest is in the creation of it. Im happy. Yeah. If youre happy, then were done. Im happy. Mission accomplished with all those photos. By the way, i want to point out obviously sung is completely tied to the Restaurant Industry which so many people are struggling now. To help all those employees that are struggling, hes part of a fundraiser on his Instagram Page which is evansungnyc. You can go there, look through all of his photos. For certain costs for different sizes, you can get a print. Hell have it printed and sent to you, and those funds will help restaurant employees. So you can check it out. You know, dana, this is a real specialty. I did the dish last week on the author of jubilee. She talked about it taking her a year to find the perfect photographer for her cookbook.
