Moving to washington, President Trump is making some potentially dangerous new suggestions for fighting the coronavirus. At his latest briefing, he talked about possibly injecting disinfectant into peoples bodies though he later partially walked that back. The president also floated the idea of getting bright light, like uv rays, into the body after hearing its bad for the virus. This is not the first time hes pushed treatments without his medical teams endorsement. Weijia jiang is at the white house for us. Good morning. At one point the president said hes up there just trying to present ideas but these idea do not have the endorsement of medical experts. President trump indicated this came from his own head, and he said it would be a good idea to look at a possible treatment. But as you mentioned, stressed, he was just throwing it out there as a suggestion. The president made these remarks after an official with the office of dhs presented a study showing sunlight, heat and humidity along with disinfectants degraded the virus on surfaces and in the air. Im just here to present talent. Im here to present ideas. Reporter President Trump called on bill bryan, a department of Homeland Security official to outline early results from a study that showed the effect of heat on the virus. Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus both surfaces and in the air. Weve seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well. Reporter but bryan also said americans should still follow cdc guidance on social distancing and personal health practices. Can you explain why some hot spots weve seen in the u. S. Are hot and humid, like new orleans, for example . Weve identified that heat and humidity is a weakness in that chain. Weve identified that sunlight, solar light, uv rays is a weakness in that chain. That doesnt take away the other activities, the guidance from the white house, the guidance from the cdc and others on the actions and steps people need to take to protect themselves. Reporter cbs news medical contributor dr. David agus said the study shows promise, but isnt a cureall. We still have to practice social distancing. We still have to wear masks. But you tie together masks, social distancing and the changes that happen in the summer outdoors, and i think we will be on offense against this virus, and my hope is well get significantly decreased cases over the summer. Reporter having heard the findings, the president has suggestions for treatments for patients. Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether its ultra violet or just very powerful light. And then i see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do Something Like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning . I would like you to speak to the medical doctors to see if theres any way that you can apply light and heat to cure. Have you ever heard of that . The heat and the light relative to certain viruses, yes, but relative to this virus . Not as a treatment. After all this unfolded, medical expert s swiftly and strongly urged people not to improperly use disinfectants, and the manufacturer of lysol says in a statement, under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body. Gayle . Very good advice. We have to say its so important to follow the advice of doctors and medical experts. I think weijia, a lot of people felt for dr. Birx. No. That kid is going to get a meal until dad is laying in the ground. Reporter we talked with four Aerospace Engineers before social distancing was in place. All were scrambling to find work. Their severance has won out and insurance will end next week. All four are still unemployed. How many of you have kids to support and how many of you feel like you have the savings to get you through until you find the next right job . Not even going to happen. My grandkids dont understand why i cry. Why were struggling and why theres very little food in the house. Reporter rent is due again next friday. Carol worries she could lose everything. What is your hope for being able to find another job . Slim to none right now. So im between a rock and a hard place. With nowhere to go. I feel like im drowning. Reporter the sad truth is the job market in wichita, like so many places, is virtually frozen right now. Were reaching out to the state of kansas trying to figure out why carols unemployment checks have been so delayed. Anthony . Yeah, heartbreaking for those families, kris. And theyre skilled workers, too, who cant find work. The pandemic is hitting latinos in the u. S. Particularly hard. Latinos account for more than 27 of deaths in coronavirus hot spots. But only about 18 of the population. And as adriana diaz shows us, the virus is also taking a financial toll on the community. Reporter in chicagos latino neighborhood of pilsen, people out of work and out of options line up hours early at this food pantry. At this point, demand has outgrown our supply. Reporter family physician dr. Evelyn figueroa opened the pantry two years ago, but demand is up by almost 50 . Just as weve been standing here, ive seen people join the line. She said, i wouldnt be able to take it if i brought this virus home to my children, especially because my son has asthma. So shes decided to stay at home, but now she and her husband, who works construction, have no income. And because theyre undocumented, they dont qualify for unemployment, food stamps or the federal stimulus. First generation american Jose Gonzalez whose parents are from mexico, is also worried about getting his daughter sick. He works as a cook at a Hotel Housing covid patients. We dont have the benefit of, i should just stay home to, you know, not carry on such a high risk. I feel like thats every latino at this point. Essential workers in many different domains are disproportionately made up of latinos and others of color. They dont get the luxury of selfisolating and staying home and flattening the curve. They have to go out and work to get paid. Reporter adriana diaz, chicago. The first human trials of a Coronavirus Vaccine in europe are taking place in britain. This is a significant step with several countries racing to find ways to fight the illness now blamed for more than 191,000 deaths worldwide. Imtiaz tyab looks at the highly anticipated new study. Reporter it may just be one small shot, but its possibly one giant leap in the fight against the coronavirus. In britain, Alyssa Renato is the first to receive this vaccine. Im a scientist. I want to support the scientific process whenever i can. Reporter human trials like this would normally take years to develop. But its been achieved in just three months by the experienced team of scientists at Oxford University who say not only does this vaccine have an 80 chance of being effective, it could be ready for use as early as september. I have a high degree of confidence about this vaccine because its technology that ive used before. Of course, we have to test it. Reporter until a vaccine is found, countries desperate to reopen their economies may look to sweden. The scand nafian nation has kept its schools and businesses open to help the general population build immunity. A goal they believe they are within weeks of. Still, more than 2,000 people have died there which is hundreds more than neighboring countries with tighter controls. We are not telling people to stay indoors. I think thats a very important part of our policy. Reporter back in oxford, scientists concede the only way theyll know for sure if their vaccine is a success is if lots of volunteers are exposed to the coronavirus. But with the uk still under strict lockdown, the irony is, you need to go somewhere like sweden to do that. For cbs this morning, imtiaz tyab, london. Eye nurse in boston is back home today recovering from the coronavirus after her coworkers became her caregivers. Her name is debbie buonopane. She was rolled out flanked by her fellow health care workers. Shes an emergency room nurse there but spent a week as a patient fighting for her life. She was given a Police Escort to her home, too, where shell stay for a while before going back to work. Here are three more reasons why everybody likes hero debbie buonopane. Shes a Breast Cancer survivor, a navy veteran and one of the hardest jobs of all, anthony, shes a single mother. So im thinking all of us are waving our pompoms to her. They say when she got home, her neighbors were standing outside cheering for her, too. I love that story. I love they gave her an escort. Certainly in the right place when she got sick. We wish her a speedy recovery and thank her for all shes doing and her colleagues are doing. New information suggests the coronavirus was spreading rapidly in the u. S. Much earlier than first thought. Only 23 cases in several major cities have been reported by march 1st when very limited testing was being done. The New York Times used a Northeastern University model to estimate there could have been about 28,000 infections in those cities by that time. Dr. Jon lapook spoke with one of the northeastern researchers. It appears the virus also took lives in the u. S. A lot earlier than we thought. Thats right, anthony. We thought the first u. S. Death had occurred in Washington State in late february. Now it turns out there was an earlier death in california about three weeks earlier. And some states are looking to reopen. There are still a lot of questions about the early spread of the virus. We project by early march thousands of cases across the skunt. Reporter dr. Alessandro vespignani is a professor in boston. His Research Team has been modeling the spread of coronavirus. They believe it began in the u. S. In midjanuary and by february there were about 50 infections a day. Ed. They were not detected because if you dont test, you dont detect. Thank you, mr. Vice president. Reporter last week the cdc director redfield said the cdc had been successful in tracing the spread of covid19. The country only had 14 cases. Reporter but a New York Times analysis of the universitys modeling estimates by march 1st, the number of cases was much higher. Likely reaching nearly 30,000 in five u. S. Cities. About 10,000 of them in new york where social distancing would not be enforced for another two weeks. I think the major problem was lack of testing. Reporter dr. Matija snuderl is a researcher. The fact this virus can spread asymptomatically from person to person without causing any disease was under appreciated until recently. Reporter through genetic an analys analysis, they found most did not come directly from china. They largely came from china to europe and europe to the United States. Travel from china to the u. S. Was curtailed on january 31st. But travel from europe continued freely for more than a month. If i could turn the clock back and go back in time, there would be two things that i think would be critical. One would be to put a mask on everybody in the city. The second thing would be to start aggressive testing everyone who is traveling from outside. I think its important for to learn from our mistakes. This is not the last pandemic that were facing. Reporter data from a preliminary state survie released thursday found more than 20 of people randomly tested in new york city were found antibodies to coronavirus. These were people who were infected and who developed the antibodies to fight the infection. Four weeks ago, five weeks ago, six weeks ago. Reporter in santa clara county, california, Officials Say cdc testing has revealed the first known coronavirus death in the u. S. Occurred on february 6th, not february 29th, as previously believed. What these deaths tell us is that we had Community Transmission probably to a significant degree far earlier than we had known. Reporter dr. Vespignani says modeling is partially based on our behavior so we all have a say in what happens next. If we stay home when we are asked to stay home, if we wash our hands, if we use masks, well, we might change the trajectory of this epidemi thc. K we cannot change the path of a hurricane. For an epidemic, we can change the trajectory. Its not the only study that found that this virus was likely circulating in the United States a lot earlier than we suspected. A recent study out of mt. Sinai found that the virus was likely present in new york city as early as late january. Anthony . Wow, jon, thank you. Imagine leaving planet earth and returning to a Global Pandemic. Gayle, we like this baseball story. You are so right. I love that story. Remember, we reported on tyler perry doing that a couple weeks ago. One of the reasons he told us that he went public is he was hoping other people would see it and be inspired. I dont know if thats why the dodgers did it, but i do think once they see other people doing it, maybe others will follow suit. I love that story. Vlad, just when we couldnt love tom hanks anymore, he does Something Else to just melt your heart. Whats he done now . I mean, yeah. Look, this is incredible. Its just indicative of tom hanks and his wife, rita wilson. So he lifted the spirits of a Young Australian boy who was being bullied because of his name. Just terrible. Corona wrote to the oscar winner, asking if he and his wife, rita wilson, were okay after being diagnosed with coronavirus. He then said he was being teased at school. Tom said, youre the only person ive known to have the name corona, like a ring around the sun. A little crown. Corona said the letter and the gift made his day. Special. I feel im famous. He said im a friend of him, and ill write back soon. I know what it is like to have a name most people are not familiar with as a little kid. Im totally down with this story, anthony. Happy friday to you. April 24th, 2020. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Experiment in reopening. At least three states will let some businesses open their doors today. Now doctors are reacting to President Trump talking about potentially dangerous treatments. New hobbies, how quarantine is inspiring people to take up creative new past times. And game on. We talk to roger godl abo gool about the new normal for football. But first, heres todays eye opener at 8 00. Theres another huge Economic Relief package for americans struggling which passed almost unanimously. Today marks the start of an experiment for at least three states in partially reopening. We see who shows up to businesses. Salons are allowed to reopen, and this one behind me is going to go for it. President trump is potentially dangerous new suggestions for treating the coronavirus. I would like you to speak to the medical doctors to see if theres a way you can apply light and heat. He said this came from his own head and said it would be a good idea to look at a possible treatment but stressed it was just a suggestion. The air force Thunder Birds are incredible, and the Navy Blue Angels equally incredible. Will be performing air shows and paying tribute to our Frontline Health care workers confronting coronavirus. Thats right, hes fighting a respiratory virus with our military, just like in the tom cruise classic, top lung. Welcome back to cbs this morning. Like many of you, we are following the guidelines, the rules staying home as much as possible. Top lung is one way to look at it, tony. There are a lot of questions after last nights briefing. Yeah. There are. As a florida boy, ive been to a flu air shows few air shows, and the blue angels are a pretty site in the air. There are eyebrow raising comments made by the president about potential treatments to fight the coronavirus. During yesterdays White House Briefing mr. Trump threw out several potentially dangerous ideas including using uv light and disinfectant inside the human body. Suppose we hit the body where a tremendous ultra violate or powerful light, and i think you said that hasnt been checked but youre going to test it, and supposedly you brought the light inside the body through the skin or in some other way, and then i see the disinfectant knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do Something Like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning. The maker of lysol is stressing under no circumstances should a product like lysol ever be administered into the body. Cbs medical correspondent joins us. Can you set the record straight on the president s potentially danger suggestion that ultra violet light be used . Just because something works outside the body doesnt mean you should bring it inside the body where it could potentially cause severe damage. You mentioned lysol. I remember when i was a medical student, there was a young boy who accidentally drank it and his esophagus was scarred. As a professional, as a doctor, im very careful about the language that i use. Medicine is an eternally humbling profession. Even when i think i said something right, people can entis interpretive. You dont want somebody hearing this kind of a statement and being ill themselves and saying you know what, im going to give it a try. You have to be very careful with language. Even when you are, people can still mishear you. John, the white house is also touting the new lab results which have not yet been peer reviewed. But they suggest that heat and sunlight could slow the coronavirus. What do we know about this . Well, weve known that the virus likes it to be dry and cold. And it doesnt like it when its hot and moist. So people have wondered i wonder if when it can gets warm and moist in those areas of the country if it will go away. In singapore, and in other areas of the world where its warm and moist, the virus is still out there and multiplying. So we cant rely on that. And one of the problems again about this suggestion is people hearing it and saying oh, go out in the sunlight and no problem. I dont have to do all the other things the social distancing and wearing the mask and things that we have been suggesting. A uv light, especially uvc has been used. Its short waved and it can fry the virus. But it can also fry the body. Its used for certain skin conditions, uv treatment. Again, you have to be very careful about how you do that. All right. Announcing the first overall pick in the draft last night from his basement. It was the first ever virtual draft, but will fans get to see joe burrow and the rest of the league play this fall . The commissioner joins us now. We should note up front that cbs is a long time broadcaster of nfl games. We like football here at cbs. Look at Roger Goodell wearing a football matters t shirt. I like it. May i say for the First Virtual draft, i stayed up to watch it. I think it turned out okay. Im tours you how you think it went, and shoutout to mrs. Goodell who has excellent taste in decorating and husbands in fact lets see how you think it went last night. Thank you. Good morning. Mrs. Goodell is not going to be happy with me because ive worn out the rug below me. We were happy. The number one thing is to make sure it works operationally for our clubs. It worked well. The Clubs Technology worked. They were able to conduct their trades and the business the way they wanted. That was number one. Number two, i think it was an opportunity for us to do it differently and make sure that we engaged with our fans. Engaged with our players that were being drafted, and make sure that we gave everyone a reason to come together and to experience something together. And that was something that was important to us. And most importantly i thought you did that well. And most importantly, we raised a lot of money last night as well. I like that too. We got to hear the back personal stories and see them with their families. Thats always important, i think. You said last night the nfl draft is important because it restores hope and generates optimism. So focusing on optimism, how apt mystic are you that well get to see football on time on schedule . How is the schedule looking . We expect the schedule out in the next two or three weeks. Were planning to be playing on time, and a full season. We know that were dealing in a different environment, and obviously Public Safety will be number one on our mind. But we believe that weve been able to make modifications. The draft was a great example. Our off season training is another example. Were able to make changes to the way we operate to do it in the environment were in and do it with our fans and our participants safety as number one. How do you plan to correct the players . Because theyre going to be practicing in summer months when the infection rate we hear could still be very high. I think number one, i dont think any of us know what its going to be three months from now or two months from now. One of the things weve learned is things change very quickly. Sometimes for the worst and sometimes for the better. I think weve all learned a lot, and were in touch with our medical experts, with the nfl pas, medical experts, and so many others on a national and local basis. So i think we make those decisions with medical experts. We make it with the right kind of Public Health safety guidelines, and well do that. And weve been obviously looking at alternatives and what we do and how we continue to make sure our players and coaches are safe and all our personnel are safe. Yeah. We all want safety. Are you planning youve had lets see two players and one coach who tested positive for covid19. Do you plan to test all of the players in the league and all of your personnel . I think thats one of the things were talking about with our medical experts. Of course, with our union to make sure that we are taking the right steps, and obviously, i was on a call yesterday with Governor Cuomo and making sure ha he understood soninlaw of the priorities for us and for businesses coming back. We want to make sure that testing is a big part of that. Because i think it is an important element of the protocols that were going to want to implement as we begin to open our own Training Facilities and our own stadiums over the next several months. I realize in this uncertain time all options are on the table. We are all trying to figure this out, all trying to make our way through, but can you see football without the fans when we start . Were not going to speculate on the options. Our job is to be prepared for the season. That means keeping our football schedule the best we can. Obviously with modifications to make sure were doing it safely, but were going to be prepared and ready and were planning on playing this fall. Even though it may be different, it might be slightly different just as the draft was last night, well be prepared. The president had a News Conference recently. He said he had a conversation with all the commissioners of all the different sports. He named now specifically. Can you tell us about that conversation . What are you all saying to the president . Well, i think the president called the meeting, and we were fortunate to be part of that along with other sports. I think he recognizes the importance of sports. To the psyche of our society. And Governor Cuomo mentioned that again yesterday. That this is important to our country. So we want to be part of the coming out, if you want to say it, of our country from where weve been over the last 60 days. But we all know we have to be careful about it. We have to be thoughtful and were obviously working with our leadership making sure we do it the right way. Theres a boothecommissioner. Youre encouraging people to boo you. Either you have a great sense of humor or tough skin. Probably both. But you know, its part of the draft. Its part of the experience, and its part of sports. But we had a great time interacting with the fans last night. It was different than it normally is when youre not there in person, but it was fun for us and i think fun for the fans. Yeah. I thought it worked. I stayed up late to watch. Thank you, commissioner. Ahead, 48 hours follows an International Man hunt to nicaragua. Each pick a story we like, share with each other and with all of you. Tony, youre up first. All right. I got a little story about some stunt artists and they are artists in my view. Theyve found a knockout way, pun intended, to pass the time during the pandemic. Take a look. This video put together by a stunt school in france that shows a chain of virtual punches and kicks pup all the opportunities whaling on each other for our amusement abiding by social distancing rules. This guy hand sanitizes before throwing his next punch. Theyre challenging others to come up with their own stunt videos, gayle and anthony, got to say, my personal stunt videos are more like americas funniest home videos me falling naturally. But i appreciate their willingness to continue to hurt themselves and appear to hurt themselves for our amusement. Bravo to them, gayle. But, tony, i would say they are professionals. This could go all kind of wrong with others trying to take this on. Interesting to see how that turns out. Again, they are professionals dont forget that. Mine is about tom brady. Apparently getting to know his new neighborhood in tamp paa. Won six super bowls with the patriots signed with the buccaneers and this week spotted exercising in a tampa bay park closed. Didnt know it. Told to leave. He did. Now told earlier this month tom brady was supposed to have a meeting at the home of the bucs offensive coordinator. Instead appears he accidentally walked into david kramers house, the next door neighbor. He described the incident to tmz. I literally sitting there and watched this tall guy just walk in my house. Kind of like looked up at me. Never forget the look on his face. He goes, hey, howsgoing, man . I go, sarcastically. You tell me, dude . Like, who are you . [ laughter ] hows it going, man. Pretty good, dude. Who are you . Brady appears joking about the incident on social media. Trespassing in parks breaking and entering just making myself at home in tombay. Combination of tom and tampa. We point out tom had an appointment with the coordinating coach. Their houses look identical. Because he was expected walked in without knockings so the neighbor, dave kramer, realized that was tom after he left and went out to take a picture but tom was already gone. Got a good sense of humor. Anthony yeah. Well, easy to get lost in a new city, gayle. Right . Okay. All right. Now, i want to tell you about some remarkable people that we have lost to the coronavirus pandemic. Something weve done the last few weeks. Some were known to the world, others were known only to loved ones. But they all made a significant difference. Here are just some of the many lives to remember. He make it is a very personal story for us once again here at cbs, but the thing i saw like about your piece, anthony, that you do every friday, just such a reminder of how this disease operates. Such a reminder how we really do have to follow the rules. Those pieces touch me every single week.
