Reporter the first person to die of the coronavirus in the country was right here in santa clara, and now we know her name. Originally she was thought to have died from a heart attack, but now according to the la times, the county has informed them that trish dowd died of the coronavirus. My heart just sank. My heart goes out to the family. Reporter cathy is a long time friend and once a coworker. We had some really good memories. And to hear thats what took her life, that enrages me. Reporter her employer said in a statement that they continue to grieve the untimely death of a well respected employee in february. We were deeply saddened to learn today that the employee passed of complications due to covid19. Her family says trish was an international traveler, but had not done so in the week preceding her death, leading county officials to this conclusion. We had Community Transmission to a significant degree far earlier than we knew. Reporter its unclear if her husband dean contracted the virus. He works at the county jail, where theyve had three positive cases of covid19. Joe vazquez, kpix 5. Tonight, the pandemic has out 1 in 6 California Workers out of a job. More than half a million filed claims last week, bringing the states total to 3. 35 million just just the past month. Many are still waiting to see their first check as california and other states scramble to process the flood of claims. The Washington Post estimates that the national backlog has grown to at least 3 million cases. Among those waiting for relief, one bay area construction worker. The number of the people keeps increasing. Its not going to get less. And if they have a backlog. Say you have 100,000 backlog today, tomorrow will be more and more. Me and my wife dont even go shopping. The backlogs could get even bigger starting next week when independent contractors can begin filing for benefits. A 480 billion aid package is headed to the president for his signature after it overwhelmfully passed the house today. Lawmakers gathered in washington for the first time in almost a month to conduct that vote. The money will largely go to help Small Businesses and also provide funding for hospitals and coronavirus testing. Many independent and minority Small Businesses say they werent able to get help with the first package, but lawmakers say that shouldnt be the case this time. We want to close the gap and take care of the Small Businesses, which the last bill did not do. We want to make sure our unbanked businesses, all minority and women own businesses really have a shot at this money. President trump is expected to sign the bill tomorrow. Reporter she was one of the first bay area residents to be quarantined and then interviewed about her ordeal. Astrid and her daughter managed to escape the epicenter of the covid19 in january and return home here. Never would they have imagined what would unfold in the United States in the months to come. This is something i never imagined. Reporter we first met her in february. She had just finished a 14day quarantine on a u. S. Military base with her daughter. Both managed to get on a charted evacuation flight from wuhan to the u. S. , before the Chinese Government locked down all travel and kept millions from leaving. There was a sense of panic, but everyone also seemed extremely relieved. Reporter mother and daughter were relieved. They tested negative for covid19 and were back home. I was ready for my house to go back to normal. Reporter astrid reopened her business, and her daughter returned to boarding school. But that lasted only a few weeks. I definitely thought the virus would make its way to america, but i had no idea how bad it would be. It was terrifying. Ill be completely honest. Reporter the 15yearold who witnessed wuhans Strict Lockdown asked her parents to send her back home. Days later, Governor Newsom announced the stay at home order. I never thought when we came back from china, escaped from wuhan, and would come into this. Reporter she and her daughter have essentially been quarantined now, albeit a few weeks, since january. Her business has been shut down even longer. Shes now taking virtual appointments, and says shes even treated covid19 patients. I want to fight this. I want to fight with others all together. Reporter the two, who have lived under two very different government orders, say theres a stark contrast between america and china when it comes to the peoples response. People were a lot more serious and panicked about the virus there. They took everything into effect immediately. There was no leniency. Reporter both say theyll continue to quarantine as long as it takes. They were visiting family in china before they were evacuated. They were never infected with covid19. In san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. Three patients have died, 36 others tested positive at a Skilled Nursing facility in oakland. Excel Health Care Center on high street tells kpix 5 that its taking immense measures to safeguard those who are not infected and to isolate and treat those who are. That includes screening staffers at the start of every shift, and restricting visitation. A second coronavirus case has forced officials to close a San Francisco navigation center. Tonight the remaining 59 guests at Division Circle and the shelter staff are all getting tested. Theyve been transferred to isolation and hotel rooms while they await the results. Health officials do not believe the newest case is related to the first one three weeks ago. The Dublin Unified School district reversing course and ditching the letter grading system for the spring semester. The school board had initially voted to keep the Current System and then decided against it after student backlash. Instead, schools will institute a credit or no credit system. Also tonight, for sports fans, a taste of what life used to be like. The nfl draft went on as planned in what could be the most tched history it was on all the tvs in our household. This draft tonight is expected to have higher ratings than the warriors nba finals games last season, as sports fans long for a taste of live sports again. He didnt give up. Reporter he started dreaming of his family. And every time i had a dream of you, i was at peace. Reporter he was finally well enough to move to a Second Hospital and start rehab and recovery. These are two of the therapists guiding him along. Working with him on this emotional roller coaster. Its been a pleasure being on his recovery journey. His family is planning a big homecoming for him tomorrow, and they say it wouldnt be possible without those Amazing Health care workers. In less than an hour, georgia will be reopening some nonessential businesses just as a key coronavirus model warns that could be a big mistake. According to the projections, which have been cited by the white house, georgia cant start to safely reopen until at least june 22nd. A new cbs poll finds that 7 out of 10 americans feel that the nations top priority should be slowing the spread of the virus, not going back to work. According to a field study from wuhan, china, the airconditioning system inside a restaurant helped transmit covid19 from a single diner to 9 others. The only diners to catch the virus were right in the path of the acs air flow. That suggests one key to preventing the spread could be improving ventilation in addition to increasing distancing. This week well give out 10,000 meals to families, and tomorrow well give out another thousand for vulnerable seniors.
