No, because if we all come back we could see a second wave that would pale in comparison. That was governor new some telling cbs this mornings Tony Dokoupil it is not time to relax the rules when it comes to reopening california. His comments come amid inthate reopen the economy. Tony dokoupil joins us now from new york with more on his exclusive interview. How was President Trumps messaging complicating Governor Newsoms effort to continue social distancing . Inthats a gr the governor, like so many governors in this country, is walking a very fine line with regard to the federal government and President Trump. Doesnt want to openly criticize because he has acknowledged to us he still needs more support from the federal government for things like testing, not the facilities, but the supplies, the swabs and the free agents to reopen the economy. When it comes to reopening the economy, that is what the protests are about. The governor said he is completely sympathetic with peoples desire to get back to work. What he really needs them to do is to continue to take social distancing seriously at this moment because, as he told us, he is fearful that if they open up too soon, there could be a second wave of this pandemic that is even worse than the one we have right now. By the way, the one we have right now, he says is so significant that he does not foresee, this was really tough stuff, he does not perceive a return to normalcy anytime soon. What does that mean . It means dont expect baseball this summer with crowds. Dont expect some redesign that they want to get kids back in the classroom. Also, voting in november, dont expect a normal election. He cited those three things is not being in the cards in the next six months to a year. That is a pretty big change. It might be a new normal overall. There are no exact dates, either. I am curious. Did the governor touch on what the new normal will look like when it does happen . Yeah, it was really noteworthy. It was a passing comment but it made my earsup when he said if schools come back in september, hes got four kids under the age of 10 in his household, so he knows what it is like to try to teach them at home, he says if they were to come back in september there would have to be redesigns talk about social distancing in the classroom. Not only the educational setting, restaurants, concerts, sporting events, distance, distance, distance is the name of the game. He says, look, it is not an easy message. He is optimistic and hopeful in the long term we will get back to normal but in the long term, that requires one of two things. We have a vaccine for this disease, which is more than a year off, according to dr. Anthony fouci, or, so many of us get this th have a l lk around fely d erate without ntracting the virus. Those are both way off. Optimism and hope, but a lot of hard days ahead still. Finding that right balance. Thank you for taking time for us this morning. We will see you in a bit. Joining us live now via shiite skype is oakland mayor libby schaaf. Welcome. Your Administration Just launched a new Task Force Last week to address the racial impact of the covid19. What are the short and longterm goals for this task force . The shortterm goals are to do whatever we can to make sure that the most vulnerable are not disproportionately impacted by this disease. We have ample data to show that the risk factors for covid19 are already disproportionally represented, particularly amongst africanamericans. So we are working to contact those communities. We have lost last week a mobile testing unit that is going out and particularly finding people just released from jail, a very high risk place, and getting out into our communities that often are cut off from the best information. M, ke nt awareness and change policies and legislation so we dont see these disparities when the next pandemic or other Health Crisis hits. It really is just startling when you see that certain racial groups have two times, three times the risk of fatality, as well as exposure to environmental factors. These are things we have the power to change. It is not just about access to healthcare, it is also about creating healthy environments for everyone. Eye opening data, for sure. Another major issue is addressing the homeless crisis in oakland. Over the weekend you told kpix 5 about 200 Homeless People have relocated to hotels. At last count, there were 4000 people homeless in oakland. What is your administration doing to get more people that shelter . The numbers have increased since we last talked. We are at 380 people that have been booked into hotels. We have been very fortunate, certainly compared to our city across the bay, because our shelters are already designed to be socially distant. We have only had to move 53 individuals from shelters into hotels because we have invested in things like cabin communities and converted sros and safe rv parking. Now we are absolutely focusing on trying to get people off of the streets and into safe places, like our hotels, where we are obviously focusing on the most foldable. Our Senior Citizens and people with underlying medical conditions. The governors announcement was a good one for oakland. One of those hotel 6s is in oakland. We are in partnership to see if we can begin to open up a third hotel in oakland. New overnight, President Trump said he would halt immigration to the u. E pand what are your thoughts on that . You know, it is not surprising. Ongoing blame mongering. I wish you would focus more on the work at hand to address the Health Crisis. The way he announced this really continued his blaming immigrants for the ills, particularly economic. When i look at our immigrant community in california, icr workers that are keeping our shelves stocked at our grocery stores. Icy the people in our emergency rooms. A brokat, e greano vilified, as this president has continued to do. That is a lot to watch on the day ahead on this particular topic. Mayor libby schaaf, thank you for joining us this morning. Be well and take care of everyone. I am kiet do live in san jose talking once again about immigration into the u. S. Immigrant rights activists say not so fast. Good morning to you. He did not elaborate on the legal basis, how long it would be carried out or how long it would last. Immigration rights advocates say they will challenge it in court. Issuing of new visas and swearing in of new citizens was already on hold because of covid19. Live in downtown san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. It is time for a look at other top stories. Recent data shows covid19 cases dropping in bay area hospitals over the past few weeks. The number of people in hospitals because of covid19 went down from 471 on april 7 to 403 on april 19.
