Prices are dropping fast. It is the one bright spot for people hit hard in the pocketbook by the covid 19 crisis. I think it is a good thing for us. This quarantine. All of us not working. Is not good for gas stations and the companies that run refineries. The Marathon PetroleumCompany Announced it is shutting down its massive martinez refinery a process that takes about a week. The company said it began to shut down on sunday because of a 60 drop in demand for gasoline brought on by the coronavirus in california shelter in place order. This is really e refi i think scrambli to respto. Reporter he studies the oil industry and called marathon a major producer. The refinery come process 161,000 barrels of crude oil per day and it employs about 740 people. With wholesale prices dropping it no longer makes economic sense to keep the refinery running. There is way too much gasoline being produced. The refineries have no place to put it. So somebody was going to have to stop producing. It looks like the marathon refineries the first one in the bay area to actually go all the way to shutting down. Reporter normally that would scare this gas station owner who said marathon is his main supplier. But not now. I hope everything goes back to normal soon. Reporter layoff notices of more than doubled in recent weeks in the bay area. As of april 8 the state edd had received notices of 21,600 job cuts. A week later the number more than doubled to 44,400. This estate and local government mandates force the businesses toclghthltether. Construction companies in movie theaters in the bay area were among the businesses affected. These people seem to really care about the community. What we are hoping to discover is how widely the wires spread. Nobody in california really seems to know right now. As of now there arent any confirmed cases in the town. Results are expected later on ee ntising at whether the blood of recovered patients could be a possible treatment for covid 19. They call it convalescent plasma. Which is drawn from people who have survived the virus. The plasma is the fluid in your blood that carries red cells and antibodies throughout the body. It could help people who are still sick. But there is no current organized antibody testing. To identify those who may have recovered. So it is up to each potential blood donor to come forward. People have to go out and find that testing at the antibody test. That proves that they had covid 19 if they are fully recovered from it. They can come in and donate and possibly help a critically ill patient who is battling covid 19. They require medical confirmation that a donor has recovered from the virus. And has the antibodies. Then any single donation can help up to three patients who are seriously ill. A statewide effort aims to bridge the Digital Divide for students.
