Some are resisting yet another covid19 mandate. San francisco and Alameda County will join sonoma implementing the order to require Face Coverings. Cost county will wait until edto gi residents time to get the masks they need. While everyone has been impacted one way or another, one group has been hit especially hard. Nationwide, African Americans are dying in disproportionately high rates. In california it is no different. According to the state health department, African Americans account for 12 of all coronavirus deaths in california but make up 6 of the population. Doctors point to a number of reasons for the disparity including the fact that many are essential workers. The biggest is lack of access to affordable healthcare. The city of oakland has formed a task force to address the problem. We have an opportunity to not just improve our actual response to this disease, but to look at permanent changes to our laws and policies, so we do not keep seeing these disparities repeat themselves over and over the task force is the first goal is to improve access to testing and ppe in underserved communities and then look forward to long term solutions. It turns out at least here in Santa Clara County according to stanford researchers, only 4 of the population became sick with the virus. The stanford study involved 3300 volunteers. From all over Santa Clara County tested recently and recruited for social media. Here is what researchers found. They estimate between 48,000 81,000 people in the county may have already been infected with covid19 by early april. Those numbers, 5085 times more than the confirmed cases. I think we knew there was a lot of infection going on and it was not being captured. Reporter uc berkeley epidemiology professor says this study shows how few people get tested. What the study also revealed is only an estimated 2. 52. 4 of county residents carry antibodies and may be immune to the virus at least for certain amount of time. This comes as they begin to discuss the next phase of the state homeowners and reviving the economy. The doctor says we must be prepared and especially continue to protect the most vulnerable. We have a lot of people left in the community who are at risk of getting infected. When we lift restrictions, trying to get people back to work, the virus is almost certainly going to be around. The Study Reveals that the death rate is lower than predicted. Stanford researchers say they hope to use the study to predict death in hospital rates as this continues. A church in Contra Costa County has been cited as the after the pastor Held Services in defiance of the shelter in place order. We spoke to the pastor who suay business for the soul. I started asking if i was dying. I said no im not going to. Reporter she never needed a ventilator but she stayed focused on her breathing. Five days later doctors said she could go home and quarantine. When i came home i was really week. Eventually day by day, bit by bit, i began to recover. Here i am. Reporter word you think she gets her strength . I dont know. I wish i had half of it. I think she has always been that way, just a tough woman. She ran the la food bank for 15 years, shes used to getting things done. I think she is used to not taking no for an answer.
