And thankfully new york, the epicenter, has been seeing some good signs lately. We will get to that in a moment. First, we begin with the tragic news of americas deadliest day since the start of this pandemic. Yesterday, the u. S. Became the first country to record more than 2,000 deaths in 24 hours. Other headlines there are now more than half a million infections in the u. S. President trump says he is eager to reopen the country but wont lift restrictions until conditions are safe. The naval ship comfort was brought in to take on 1,000 overflow patients, but new yorks governor says most of those beds may not be needed. But officials caution we still have a long fight ahead. This is the end of the week, that famous week we spoke about last weekend in which we what was predicted to happen happened, were starting to see the leveling off and the coming down. Reporter while the rate of new cases slowed, the virus killed more than 11,000 in the United States this week. Nearly half in new york where an old public cemeterys onceaweek burials became a daily operation. And no one is saying its advisable to end stayathome orders, particularly the doctors on the White House Coronavirus task force. There is not the time this is not the time to feel that since we have made such important advance in the sense of success of the mitigation that we need to be pulling back at all. We still see cases occurring in the boston area and in chicago. But their rate of increase seems to be stabilizing. Reporter but data released this week shows underserved communities are being disproportionately hit hard. In illinois, 28 of those who tested positive are africanamericans. Though they make up 15 of the states population. In michigan, blacks account for 40 of the positive cases, but just 14 of the population. Look at all of the structural issues around, all of these health care inequalities, all of these lower income jobs, it tends to impact individuals in neighborhoods of color a lot more than it does in other neighborhoods. Reporter overall, the number of confirmed cases in the u. S. Has now exceeded half a million. There cannot be a this cannot be a weekend to let our foot off the gas. Were not even close, folks. Reporter after the Surgeon General warned this week could be the nations equivalent of pearl harbor or 9 11, the president said the u. S. Death toll could be substantially lower than original estimates of 100,000 or more. Its really about the encouraging signs that we see, but as encouraging as they are, we have not reached the peak. Reporter the New York Times obtained projections from the departments of Homeland Security and health and Human Services that show cases could spike if stayathome orders are lifted after 30 days. Officials with both agencies declined to comment on the documents to cbs news. Nikole killion at the white house. Here to discuss the medical aspects of the crisis is dr. David agus. He joins us now from los angeles. Dr. Agus, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Ripe new york is currently reporter new york currently the highe efest epicenter. What phase are we at in flattening this curve . Reporter we hope and pray that the data reflect a trend. Theyre going to continue. Theyre showing fewer hospitalizations, fewer icu intensive care unit admissions, and fewer people going on a ventilator on a daily basis. They were going up, now theyve flattened. The deaths had not yet flattened, but theres a delay of about a week between hospital admissions and decrease in deaths. We hope thats going to continue, and its not a slowing of the curve but a flattening of the curve. The virus isnt going to magically disappear. If the rate of the new cases continues to decline, how do we determine when the right time is to ease those stayathome orders . Reporter there are two components. Theres getting the disease incidence very low, then theres us getting ready as a society, as a country. We need testing, that is who has the virus to be in the millions per week. Were not threat why. We need the ability of testing who has been exposed and has immunity so doesnt have to worry about catching it again or spreading the virus. That test has not yet launched. Then we need the ability to social trace. That is, there will be people who test positive, and when you do, we want to go back and see who you interacted with the days prior because all of you need to be back put in your homes, and we will wait a period until you go back out again, and were going to stop the virus. There needs to be a threepronged plan which isnt ready yet. Slowing the cases together with technology and our plan together. Then were going to be able to let the dogs out and all of us go out. It will be graded. Well go out with masks at first, higher risk people will stay in. Its not going to happen all at once. What about treatment . Weve heard about obviously the search for a vaccine but also how to treat the virus. Where are we within those two things, in terms of those two things . Reporter well, there were two big things that happened. The new england journal of medicine reported on the drug that was developed for ebola, that had success in multiple laboratory study, and the first human study showed in about 56 people, about twothirds actually got better. These were people on a ventilator. So it didnt have a control arm. That is, we dont know who it gotten better on their own. But the drug was well tolerated and appeared to have activity in the studio. The second is, you know, this is a virus where its not a live organism. It actually goes into our cells and uses our own machinery to divide. And there is a drug called a protease inhibitor that blocks protein from interacting with us. It was developed for this virus. Pfizer has made it and the data looks encouraging. Those to me are exciting. Were nowhere where we need to be with the drugs, but were taking baby steps forward. My hope and prayers are one of the drugs will work. That will dramatically change our stress level if we can treat this disease. It sure would. Thank you so much. We have never seen a Silicon ValleyProduct Launch quite like the one on friday. The ceos of apple and google released this joint logo signifying their combined effort to combat the coronavirus. Next months each Company Plans to roll a technology on their operating systems that can notify someone if theyve been in contact with a person whos tested positive for covid19. It is called contact tracing. Wired editorinchief and contributor nick. Toston has details on Nick Thompson has details on this. A lot of questions. First, how does it work . The idea is that apple and google have made it possible to run this on top of their phones. Youll download an app, probably from the cdc, some other organization, and then what will happen is that youll through bluetoo bluetooth, it will keep track of all the phones youve been near during the course of the day. It will give me a number and will give my parentsinlaw the other room, in range of my phone, will build a log of every home youve been fiscal year for probably a period of, say, five minutes continuously. Everybody will have a unique number, and the data will be stored on their phone. A lot of people then what will happen let me a lot of people have big privacy concerns about this. One of the issues here is the optin part. You have to opt in if you want to do this. If people arent opting in, does it still work . Yes. So you do have to opt in. What has to happen is enough people have to opt in. If my phone has been near yours, you test positive and you havented opted in, i dont learn about it. The system works where when somebody tests positive, their phone tells the cloud, hey, i tested positive, i have these numbers. The other people then check in the cloud and say, oh, have i been near somebody whos positive. If youve been near someone who tested positive for more than five minutes, youll get an alert. The privacy stuff is important. You wont know who it was. You wont know where it was. And if you havent tested positive, all of your data stays on the phone. So youre protected that way. So its a complicated system built in a way to try to protect your privacy as much as possible. Along those lines, though, obviously privacy is such a key factor for so many people. Who might be able to access any of that data if it is collected . I know you say its on your phone. Anyone else that would be able to get that data . Well, the worrisome thing is that when you test positive your data is uploaded to the app, to whoever has built the app. The data thats being uploaded is pretty benign. Its just a series of numbers. But it will come from a phone that is based in a location that is using an ip address. Whoever runs the app would have the ability if they acted badly to figure out some of the locations of people who test positive. Ideally its a company that builds a system in such a way that information is stripped out and people are protected. But thats the weakness. But it is much better that they built it this way than most of the other options that had much grander weaknesses. And obviously at this point people are just looking for something to help in this fight we have. Nick thompson, thank you for interesting information and insight. Many parts of the world remain under lockdown in the battle to contain covid19. The global death toll has passed 100,000 with nearly two million reported cases. The World Health Organization warns that lifting any lockdown measures too early could lead to a deadly resurgence in infections. Holly williams is in istanbul, turkey, the latest country to restrict the movement of its citizens. Holly, good morning. Reporter good morning. Effectively banning most people from leaving their homes and allowing only pharmacies, bakeries, and essential Services Like hospitals to remain open. As a result, people rushed to supermarkets to stock up. Although things remained orderly in places, some panicked shoppers ignored social distancing advice, and there were even multiple reports of fights breaking out. This morning here in istanbul, the streets are eerily quiet, and Security Forces have been deployed to enforce the curfew. In the united kingdom, the death toll stands at almost 9,000. And yesterday, 980 people died. Surpassing the worst daily figures even from places like italy and spain. One rare piece of good news from the country is that the prime minister, boris johnson, who was treated in an icu this week, is now apparently up and walking again. And reportedly filling his time by doing puzzles. For people around the world who have been living under lockdown sometimes for weeks, the big question is how and when life might go back to normal. Well, austria has announced that it is allowing some shops to reopen next week. And denmark says that if its infection rate remains stable, it will reopen Elementary Schools mid month. Michelle . That would be some good news, sudoko definitely my goto, too. Thank you so much. As if the pandemic hasnt upended life enough, some parts of the u. S. Are now bracing for the biggest Weather Threat so far of the spring season. A powerful storm cell unleashed lightning and hail in southwest texas friday. Flood warnings stretched from california to the deep south. Tornadoes and damaging winds are expected through monday, with the most Severe Weather likely on easter sunday. Thats the one were concerned about. During the day on sunday, lots of thunderstorms. Supercell thunderstorms possible. Could be longtrack tornadoes, be very, very careful. Pay attention to any warnings that are issued from the National Weather service. The other side of the storm is snw and a lot of snow. We could see six to 12 inches in parts of the upper midwest, maybe more than that. Watch out places like minneapolis, thats the swath of snow. You can see it there. A lot of heavy snow on the way. One other thing i want to mention to you is there are likely going to be tornado warnings in the southeast. Shelters are likely to be open. But i know a lot of people may not want to go because of covid19. If a big tornadoess headed toward you, you have to have a plan today. Back to you guys in the studio. Or not in the studio. One in the studio here and michelle and dana at home. Good to see you. Thats right. Thank you very much. 22 minutes after the hour. Heres a look at the weather in your area. Those markets were closed as part of the general lockdown. But with the pandemic easing in china, theyre returning to life. And that reportedly includes the market in wuhan linked to the first reported infections. New york times science and environmental reporter jim robbins is the author of the article destroying nature unleashes infectious diseases. It theorize thats most epidemics including aids, ebola, and sars are the result of mans interactions with the natural world. Youve been writing about the ecology of disease for the past 40plus years. Whats different about this . Were live flooding an era thats living in an area where humans are broadening their footprint of the natural world. The more we invade these natural places, the more we open up to diseases that come from animals. Zoonotic is the technical term. We dont have an immune system in a lot of cases that can deal with these. A zoonotic disease is a disease that transfers from from one species to another . Right. It jumps the species barrier from animals into humans. Thats our believed to have been the source for the coronavirus. So what happens is these bats are out there living in a cave somewhere. People go in, they chop down the trees, the bats leave because theres people there, and maybe they drop a piece of half eaten fruit into a an animal pen or where people kill them and eat them, and it passes on to that human. That human goes out and infects his family, his village, and from there it goes off into the Wild Blue Yonder all over like were seeing with the coronavirus. Youre analogy with lyme disease was really penetrating for me. When you eradicate certainly predators that you, in fact, are contributing to a disease spreading throughout, you know, a core population. People came in and built roads and homes not knowing that they were thinking about the fact that they were forcing predators out of these forests around cities. And so this one particular species called the whitefooted mouse is a reservoir for lyme disease. And so it harbors this disease and spreads it around. If we had predators like foxes, badgers, and things like that, they would keep the numbers in check and lyme disease wouldnt be the problem that it is. We need to understand the basics of how these ecosystems work and try and restore their function somewhat so we can protect ourselves against diseases like lyme disease or coronavirus. Have we seen anything like covid19 in our past . Theres their have always been viruses that jump the species barrier. A couple of factors come into play. Theres more people than there ever have been. But the second thing is International Travel that globally is taking off. The travel International Travel of goods and people is contributing to this, as well. 10,000 a people in this day a country retire and want to travel. Because industry is shut down, we have clearer skies. Animals are starting to repopulate certain areas. I mean, is Mother Nature, is Mother Nature resetting here . Who knows what mores intent is. Were not fooling Mother Nature now. Were were defying Mother Nature. Were defying known rules. You can only defy the rules for so long before its payback time. The question is about whether the Natural Systems are going to survive. And right now, its dicey. Im worried. Ive covered these issues for 40 years. I just did a story on heat stress in animals. Its taking a toll. Someone likened the disappearance of species to rivets popping out on an airplane thats flying. How many rivets can you lose on that airplane before things start to really go to hell. Thats my concern. What are some of the largescale changes that need to take place . A fundamental ecological literacy should be taught in every school. The ecosystems sustain us as a species even if we dont realize it. What would an ecologically literate globe look like . Well, i think that these principles, the ecology of disease, the importance of predators, the important of protected areas, i think it would all be fundamental 101. Forests, clean our water. Forests clean our water, forests clean our air, forests protect us from disease. I think it needs to be taught to everyone everywhere. And based on science, its the only way to kind of keep us from tearing apart the world. Do folks like you, did you see this coming . Very definitely. Its been known for a long time. My story, i wrote it eight years ago. I mean, they knew it then and warned about it then. And so yes, this is this has been known to be coming, its just theyve been waving their hands, people arent paying attention. An eyeopening perspective. Jim said another very relevant example of this is the wildfires in the past year or so. They are getting larger and larger, and weve messed with what he called the natural fire system weve put out. A lot of fires and built homes where fires need to burn. The fires are getting worse and worse because theres so much fuel on the ground, dana. Yeah, michelle, i think his airplane analogy was so well said certainly and made sense for so many of us. Coming up, many families have suddenly grown in the midst of the pandemic. It helps provide a little bit of routine and a schedule for us and kind of keep us on track. It gives you something to focus on. Gives you a purpose. I feel like in this hard time shes doing more for me than i am for her really. I really do. Reporter animal shelters and rescue organizations have put the word out to help empty the kennels. The response has been overwhelming. Milly came from a small new jersey nonprofit, see spot rescued, which normally gets one to two requests to foster each month. In march after the stayathome order it had more than 50 per day. Youre getting even more demand from people who are stuck ad home and perhaps the only comfort that they can find is from a pet. Reporter this is the founder of lucky dog Animal Rescue. Over the last four weeks, it tripled the number of animals the rescue would see in a normal month, taking in 434 dogs and cats. Lucky dog transported them from shelters across the south to the washington, d. C. , area, placing 366 of them in foster or adoptive homes. All amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Animal Welfare community is really struggling with the balance between saving the animals lives and saving the peoples lives. How much personal interaction is needed to save a life . Theyre all life or death transports. If we do not take these animals from the shelters, they are going to be killed. And we dont want that result, particularly when we know so many people will benefit emotionally, spiritually, even physically, right. Like having a dog makes you go out and go for a walk. Reporter in our new normal where times square here is virtually empty, i can tell you that having an animal like my guy barkley really is good for the soul. Some of the Animal Welfare people i spoke with said now it feels like these guys are the only ones who are winning. One of their concerns is what happens to our fourlegged friends a few months from now. So theres so much uncertainty and so many unknowns. Reporter matt burchadker is president and ceo of the aspca. The economic reality of the Health Care Crisis and the economic crisis are very, very real. Its absolutely a concern about increased surrenders and abandonment. Reporter to help, the aspca created a 5 million rescue and relief fund with two goals keeping shelters afloat if donations dry up and assisting pet owners with food distribution. The more people who need help caring for their pets and keeping the pets in their home, thats the idea behind providing supplies. Not only to keep the bond in place where people rely animals for psychological support, but to keep animals out of the shelter. Good job. Reporter keeping families together, like carly, tom, and milly, who in a little more than a week formed what the Animal Rescue world calls a furever home. I know a lot of people in the rescue world will say when we go to rescue a dog, you pick your dog. You save them. But the other side of it is the dog saves you in some way. Do you guys feel that already . I definitely do. Definitely. Carly wakes up every day and says, what i would do without there dog right now. The whole idea of having a purpose and something to focus your energy on during this time has been really wonderful. Its so nice to see how much she loves him. She is definitely a daddys girl. She loves him so much. Its been awesome. And obviously these recos are still going on. Rescues are still going on. There are still pets out there. There are a lot of transports from the south. Theyre being careful in trying to social distance when they do them. And i think the most important word, jeff, is that if you are struggling to keep your pet, reap out to some of these organizations that can help you with food and other resources. Yeah, someone hopefully will be there for you. I want to congratulate barkley on staying still 30 seconds there during the during the standup. That was impressive. He looked like a beautiful statue. Hes sleeping right now. Couldnt get him out here. Good. Good. You know, dana was a bit of a Meghan Markle lookalike in your piece. I enjoyed it. Thank you. The mountain may have been imaginary, but the effort required was real. Up next, how one man took an exercise goal to new heights. The coronavirus pandemic is forcing the vatican to depart from holy week traditions. The pope will celebrate tonights holy saturday vigil alone, and he will not baptize new catholics into the faith. This easter weekend, many catholics are turning to their faith even if it means doing so on line to cope with these challenging times. Chris livesay has more. Reporter good morning from st. Peters square on a weekend you would normally expect to find tourists and pilgrims by the tens of thousands. However, these days hardly anything is normal, including here at the vatican leading up to easter. Palm sunday, though no one to wave the palms. Good friday, but without the pilgrims. [ speaking Foreign Language ] since his inauguration, hes been called the peoples pope. But in the age of coronavirus, hes the pope with no people. As the faithful take shelter from a disease that this week pope francis called a plague, relegating two pontiffs into selfisolation. For First Time Since 1950, the pope walked the stations of the cross in st. Peters square. He paid tribute to those who cant stay at home, doctors, volunteers, shop workers, and priests, like the 60 who have died, and those still performing their duties like those in ninbro. One of the italian towns hit hard of the by covid19. In 1630 the plague killed every priest in town. Today, coronavirus hasnt killed any of the priests, but its infected all but one of them. His name is don mateo, preaching to an ailing congregation via youtube. He listens to the names of his flock who have fallen victim to this modernday pestilence. The church has lived through trials before, he says, but at least priests could visit with their people. Its so hard for me not to see them. Now if youre worried about pope francis, the vatican says hes tested for coronavirus twice, negative. Now pope francis says hes recovering from bronchitis. During hulu week he speck holy week he speculated it might be natures response to Climate Change and encouraged us to look out for the homeless who cant stay at home. For cbs this Morning Saturday, chris livesay, rome. And we wish everyone a happy easter. If youre celebrating passover, tomorrow is also the second sunday in april which has become synonymous with the masters. While the coronavirus has postponed the event, you can still spend tomorrow watching it. Cbs sports is airing a masters rewind this weekend, looking back at two great victories with the golfers themselves and the voice of the masters, jim nantz. I caught up with the cbs sports lead playbyplay man to talk about march without the madness and this untraditional second sunday in april. Can i steal your line and just say hello, friend . Thats nice to hear. Absolutely you can. You really are the voice of march and april. And to have your voice silenced the way sports has been silenced right now, what has that been like for you . Ive been fine. Its a good feeling when people want to associate me with both of those events, the final four of the ncaas and the masters. Weve all got greater things to be concerned with than the thing thats were missing out on. More than anything, my attention and my heart goes out to all the people who have faulten victim to this fallen victim to this. Thats my greatest concern. That is exactly how i would expect you to feel and expect you to say. Its also an opportunity for some of us. What has that time been like to be around your family . It took probably ten days before everything got back in sync in terms of realizing that youre not running to catch another plane. You hate to try to talk about positives or blessings because theres just such crisis. But in that Little Silver lining, my oldest daughter carolines up from los angeles. Im just lofting to have that time loving to have that time with her. Our little ones are 6 and 4, and thats been riding bikes with training wheels trying to get to that point where we can take the training wheels off. Were close. My son whos 4, jamieson, has taken to golf. Hes got a crazy great golf swing. Its been a treasure, treasured family time for sure. Are you walking into rooms and doing play by play of what the family is doing ive tried. Ive tried to put the playbyplay announcer side for a while. I guess sometimes i cant help myself. Yes, i saw some video. Its that glorious time of the year. Basketball and golf back to back. I know that family, and theyre great kids. And for them to mastermind everything on to the links from the hair dryer to a ramp thats positioned up against a row of emmys that belong to the dad and then the ball ends up hopping down the steps, and i was able to transition to my golf voice. This for birdie. It was fun. There it is. A win for the ages. Laughter is good. You mentioned the golf voice. Its going to be a different masters that we watch because there is a look back at ones that weve seen. Confidence we have Phil Mickelson looking back at his epic win of 2004. Is it his time . Yes [ cheers ] at long last and were going through segments and situations, and im doing play by play, and hes being the analyst. [ cheers ] and tomorrow is tiger tigers in a different place mentally. Many doubted wed ever see it. His win a year ago here it is the return to glory. [ cheers ] going to be blown away by the attention to detail that they have for the recall of the moment. I was gearing up for this moment. To live it and experience it and to do it on the final green was very surreal. Like i couldnt believe that it was happening. Personally, i cant think of a better one to watch than tigers win last year because of the full story that it told. I think his message, the way he played, is just what we need right now. [ cheers ] the comeback story about facing odds and being down and the despair that comes with it. But knowing that theres hope and theres victory and theres joy at the end of this. This is a very welltimed rewind of a broadcast. It packs a powerful message. [ cheers ] you can watch masters rewind today starting at 2 30 eastern and then tomorrow beginning at 12 30 eastern right here on cbs. And the one thing ive not got an update on is whether or not the training wheels have come off of the bike yet. I will try to find that out somehow and maybe post to twitter. Did you see jamiesons back swing, man . That kid has a great swing. Yes. Yeah, truly awesome. So nice for a lot of us to spend time with our families. Thats the one thing he said, the only Silver Lining because theres so much pain out there. All right. Thank you so much. Nine minutes after the hour. Heres a look at the weather for your weekend. [ cheers ] exactly 50 years ago today, nasa launched the apollo 13 mission into space. It was supposed to be a Third Mission to land humans on the moon. But two days after launch, an explosion in the spacecrafts oxygen system put the three men crew in mortal danger. Thanks to their quick thinking and ingenuity of scientists, the astronauts returned to earth safely. An investigation was launched immediately after. One member of the panel looking at what went wrong was Neil Armstrong. The first man to set foot on the moon. Armstrong spent most of his life after his moonwalk shunning attention. He still took the time to respond to some of the tens of thousands of letters he received in the years afterward. Some of those interactions are compiled in a new book, dear Neil Armstrong, and they reveal a lot about armstrong and ourselves. One thing thats great about these letters is that you never really know what youre going to find. Jim hanson is Neil Armstrongs official biographer. He wrote first man. We need to fail down here so we dont fail up there. And consulted on the movie that followed. If he had stayed a test pilot, he would have continued to contribute and achieve. Hansons latest project going through a vast treasure trove of letters. The new book he put together, dear Neil Armstrong, was released this past fall. Before that happened, we got an early look at the source material. Its kepted at purdue tent at purdue, alma mater of more astronauts in history including armstrong. This is not own not open to the public. How many correspondents here . At least 70,000 pieces of paper in just the fan mail section alone. The rest of this, 450some boxes are the rest of neils life really. Hes in these boxes. He really is. Oh, this is a cute one working with grimm, hanson separated the letters into categories. There is one prevailing theme. Most of these letters are not people giving him something, its them asking him for something. Yeah. They ask him for everything. I mean, autographs, pictures, you know, theres one woman in italy asked for one of his socks. Really its kind of holding up a mirror to ourselves, to our culture. Here he had become this global icon stepping on to another world, first person to do that. Some people thought he was like a demigod. That he had insights to the universe that nobody else had. They wanted him to share shows secrets. Never one to overstate his accomplishments or claim more knowledge than he had, armstrong didnt always respond. Sometimes he did like when an environmentalist from philadelphia accused him of polluting the solar system. Show to is someone writing saying so this is someone writing saying theyre upset they left things behind on the moon. Mr. Nickerson is concerned about environmental degradation and trash. Armstrong sent a long letter back. As you can see from the second paragraph, nasa has taken all reasonable precautions to avoid disrupting the natural environmentment moon. Theres a merchants in turkey who armstrong paid for souvenirs in 1970. This is a guy living in turkey who sold Neil Armstrong something when he was there visiting, didnt want to cash the check because it was from Neil Armstrong, but then wrote Neil Armstrong to say can you send me another check. So what neil did, he sent a duplicate and says keep either for yourself and cash the other. Enclosed it a photograph that you may find preferable to the check, in which case you may feel free to destroy the second check. The volume of International Letters surprised hanson. Specifically the many complimentary letters from our cold war nemesis. One of the first chapters you deal with is letters from soviets, from russians. Yeah. Who were congratulating him. Thats right. One reason i wanted to do that chapter is there was kind of this idea that the soviets paid no attention to apollo 11 and will didnt believe it, some didnt, and there was no news of apollo 11s moon landing for soviets to know about. In the armstrong correspondence, you see letters from not just soviet citizens but from the eastern bloc countries. They much all none were nasty. There are many letters from kids. Some sweet, like this dinner invitation from a young girl. Some heartbreaking including a 14yearold looking for an autograph. His mother attached a separate letter telling armstrong the boy didnt know it but was terminally ill. Armstrong, whose daughter died of cancer at just 2, wrote back immediately. Douglas wrote you that hearing from you would be the happiest moment. His life, perhaps it was, just two hours after your letter arrived, he fell sweetly and peacefully asleep with the sweetest little smile on his face, not to awaken again on this earth. Somewhere you have a new little Guardian Angel who joins me in these sentiments. Im not sure theres a letter thats more poignant than that one. Man, that moment still gets me. Michelle, i think its important get me, too. Right . In these extraordinarily challenging times, we have accomplished extraordinary things before. Yes, with so little. And its gumption that got us there, and i do believe gumption will get us there again. That stick toittiveness. Thank you, we appreciate that. That phrase may feel truer now than ever as people in lockdowns worldwide are rediscovering the joys of stargazing. From london, Roxana Saberi shows us how societys shutting down has brought the night sky to life. Reporter around the world, cities that never sleep are slowing down under lockdowns. And the air we breathe is clearing up from the streets to the skies. I can just see some craters to the southern part of the moon, can see that very, very clearly. Reporter for decades, the universe has captivated trevor pitt, but he had trouble capturing it from his home in southern england because so many planes lit up the night sky like this and now . There arent any. There simple are no airplanes to light up the picture. That might be exciting as a stargazer. Ive almost become a vampire because i spend so much time at night. With global traveling grinding to a halt and people staying home to stop the spread of the coronavirus, layers of smoke are lifting, revealing sparkling skies. As people are taking their cars to work less, as industry is shutting down, that fog, that smog is beginning to clear out. These satellite images taken before and after coronavirus lockdowns show how dramatic the drop in air pollution has been. In europe and in china. Its not just cleaner air making stargazing easier, theres also less light coming from shops, factories, and stadiums forced to shut down. With many of us under orders to stay indoors, stargazers say we now have a unique opportunity to enjoy the clearest night skies in decades. Even in big cities like here in london. All we have to do is look up. A lot of people think that you need very expensive equipment, that you need a very highend telescope. You absolutely do not. All you need is your eyes. And an app like this can help you pick out the planets and constellations. Since the uks lockdown began, people across the country have reached out to the go stargazing group and its cofounder neil sanders. Weve had lots of people interacting with us on social media. And those are people have seen the space station passing over. Reporter theyre sharing glimpses of the sky and moments of joy. Looking at venus now. What can you see . It looks like its a little rainbow blob. A rainbow blob. Reporter for trevor pitt, embracing the wonders of the universe wow, it is gorgeous. Provides some perspective that we need in times like these. The three months of the lockdown is a long time, but its not forever. The moons still there, the stars are still there. Reporter taking them in can also help us feel connected. Wherever you are, you can always call someone up and say, hey, lets go outside and look up at the sky together, and youll be looking at the same thing. I think that is a very unifying thing that can bring everybody together. Reporter and that may be more important now than ever. For cbs this Morning Saturday, Roxana Saberi, london. And that is pretty cool to think about. We had a super moon this poverty week, another coming up on may 7th. Those stargazing apps are fantastic.
