Reporter its a challenge that teachers and administrators face across the Oakland Unified School district. A lot of our families dont have the technology at home. They dont have computer or Internet Access making it difficult to do the instruction we need to do. Reporter 12,000 to 13,000 families show up on monday and thursdays for school lunch pick ups, a perfect time for the district to distribute donated laptops, wi fi hot spots, and packets of paper and lesson plans. Its a great bridge for us because we already know the families are coming out. Reporter its also playing out across the district, including in east palo alto. Its really highlighting the Digital Divide that already existed that might not have been as present in everyones mind. Reporter theyre also ensuring students get wifi hot spots, plus a laptop for older students, or a tablet for the younger ones. We want them to log in frequently and see what teachers are assigning, to view lessons the teachers have recorded. Reporter even the arts are moving online. Students at oakland tech are still rehearsing for a play that might never make it to the stage. They get together on zoom and rehearse their scene. Reporter but Technology Still has challenges. And its a big one. Starting this weekend, all residents will have to wear a mask or some other Face Covering when they go to the Grocery Store, visit other essential businesses, and employees will also be required to cover their faces. Today Governor Newsom announced the state has secured a monthly supply of 200 million surgical and n95 masks for medical workers. He says that should be enough to also help other states struggling to find the critical protective gear. Were confident we can supply the needs of the state of california, potentially the needs of other western states. So we just inked a number of contracts in the last few days that give me confidence in being able to say that. The offer for help comes as 5 states reported their deadliest single day since the outbreak began. The virus has killed 731 people in new york just since yesterday, surpassing the previous high by more than 100. New jersey, illinois, louisiana, pennsylvania also reporting their highest number of deaths in a single day. Tonight the acting Navy Secretary has resigned after berating the fired captain who sounded the alarm as the virus spread among his sailors. Kpix 5s joe vazquez spoke to one bay area lawmaker whos now calling for an investigation. Reporter the drama surrounding captain Brett Crozier came to a head today when his boss resigned. But at least one bay area congressman says it shouldnt end there. There needs to be a review, and honest review. Reporter congressman joe huffman wants the captain reinstated, and he wants an investigation into why the acting secretary of the navy decided to fire the captain of the uss roosevelt. This after captain crozier who a letter last week after hundreds of his sailors tested positive for covid19. He just sort of swooped in and fired the captain. Theres reporting that he did it because he thought trump would want him fired. So this becomes like an episode of the apprentice. Thats not how it should work. Tonight the number of covid 19 cases in assisted living facilities across the bay area is on the rise. The Alameda CountyHealth Department is confirming a coronavirus outbreak at gateway care and Rehabilitation Center in hayward. Mercury news reports that 21 residents there tested positive, and about 20 or more Staff Members could also be infected. Officials are still waiting for the test results. And this is just one in a number of outbreaks in Long Term Care facilities around the bay area, including pleasant hill, castro valley, orinda, kentfield, San Francisco, and san jose. The City Councils in both San Francisco and san jose have approved Emergency Paid Sick leave ordinances. Unlike federal stimulus packages, the measures apply to companies with more than 500 employees. They would be able to use emergency leave if theyre under quarantine, show covid19 symptoms, or are caring for children or someone whos sick. The ordinances would apply to gig workers like ride share drivers. Oakland is expected to consider a similar plan next week. He was a good guy. He worked at walmart for nine years. He had a lot of friends there. They were devastated, as well as we are. Travis air force base in fairfield has been on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak since day one, housing quarantined cruise ship evacuees. But with those people now gone, the base is now fighting the virus in a different way. Reporter buses of exposed americans rode onto Travis Air Force base in the hundreds, immediately mobilizing an entire base in the battle against covid19. Really were bound together trying to work to fight this. Reporter a team effort to help their on base hospital. We decided to start solving problems at a local level. Reporter instead of waiting for resources to arrive, the base has started 3d printing shield fames and mask covers on their own. We want to focus on longevity of our n95 masks, and the best way to do that is addressing just full face coverage. Reporter Staff Sergeant estrada started the project in his own garage. What we did was use the Water Jet Cutter to cut out a frame out of flat plastic. Members of the board of supervisors announced legislation today that would require the city secure more than 8200 private rooms by april 26th.
