It promises to be a very interesting construction. After this please join us for ask a priest. Staying home will slow the spread of covid19 and, will without a doubt, save lives. Gov. Hello and welcome to mosaic. Two priests of the archdiocese of San Francisco. We will talk about questions being submitted to the priest and see what our answer can be. Father Kevin Kennedy and father cameron fowler. You can see we have a young priest and the slightly older priest. Lets find out about her lives and careers. Spector been a priest for four years and im entering my fifth year and im the vocation director San Francisco as well as the priest secretary. And you went to st. Patricks . Yes. Are you a local product. I grew up in marin county and father kevin you i know and i think you are from. I was born in san mateo and grew up in belmont. And then a priest for two decades . Yes. I am our pastor the byzantine of them. We d i ed tx anmatch. From the pew Study Organization they said the real presence of christ in the eucharist and the eucharist is the center of what the priests life is and what the job is, 70 of catholics say they dont believe in the real presence and are not sure about that. I would like you to respond to this. Is this something you experience as a priest who is presiding at the eucharist . I would say those studies do not surprise me. When we look out at the pews where people are celebrating. We can see there beliefs or lack of police and what do we need to do to address this. Wordsand as a church i think if we did a better job acting like we believe in the way priest celebrate mass and that will generate a deeper faith and our people. 2nd graders believe and they have this deep mysterious belief in the eucharist but they dont see that lived out in their masses they go to or in the parishes and i think the belief diminishes as they get older. Acting like we believe could be a start. I think thats crucial you cant full people. You have to be a police that believes. Thatthey are a person of christ and christ is central to the priesthood and his mission is not to drop people to himself but threw himself to christ and if he believes what the church believes and teaches , he believes this is truly the mystery of christs presence renewed offer to the father. Then he will naturally express that through reverence and love and you cannot fake that. Unfortunately when a priest does not celebrate with reverence people pick up on that and say if he doesnt believe why should i and Police Rather the priest focus on this dedication to this special mystery in the reference of the celebration of the mass. We think of priest of doing various tasks and jobs and they could be educators or teachers. But is your central task the saying of the liturgy in the saying of the mask. The very nature of priesthood is offering sacrifice and all World Religions the priest rol Academic Work and Community Organizing and administration. All of those things can be part of and are to some degree a part of someones priesthood. The gospel offers the sacrifice of the cross. The sacrificial love of the lord offered rationalized and renewed in the presence of the community. Done with great care and love. The community sees christ renewing his offering of himself on our behalf to the father. I cannot imagine what the real presences but i understand the teaching and you are putting me in a special relationship with god himself in that moment. Thats the big sacrament and ill there is a slightly smaller segment of the confession which seems absolutely important which means you the priest that put me in touch with god for forgiving our sins and we had a question bearing on that. The fear of going to confession. How do i overcome my fear of going to consent fashion . One of the fears is the priest is going to judge me, especially if i know that priest and they hear my voice or see my face they will judge me differently. One of the things that helps limit that at priests. It gives us a certain level of compassion and empathy. We are there to stand in the place of christ, the physician, and to bring healing to these people lives. Thats who they seek to encounter and our job is to get out of the way so christ can speak through us, in a sense. I would say its a helpful piece of advice and know we are not there to judge and we know the state of our own souls and the sins of many people that come to us we are not there to judge. I might say its easier for people if they plan to go to confession to find a priest that they dont know and do so anonymously behind the screen so they dont feel on a human level the sense of pride. The goal is they live with joy. With the lord forgives and forgets and takes it away as if it never happened and he brings us back to the moment of baptism which should be a great joy. We would take another brief break and we talk more about questions from the priests. Covid19 is a serious respiratory disease. We are talking with father Kevin Kennedy and kevin fowler about the life of a priest. We have an omnibus question come in and its pretty good one. What is success for a priest. I think we know what success is for a baseball player is. What is success for a priest and by the same token how would a priest fail. We know a plumber might fail and thats obvious. Can you address those things father kevin . We were talking about one of my favorite films from 1944. The keys of the kingdom. Gregory peck plays a priest who is presumably in his church to assignments of failure. He goes to china but ends up touching the hearts of many people. The lives of many people through his gentleness and his humility and his authenticity and he embodies the best of the priesthood and even though its a fictional character he is the best of Vincent De Paul and john liani and others who embodied the rest of others to pattern their lives against the heart of the lord. Learn from me because i am gentle and humble of heart and touches the soul of another human being he is a success as a priest and a success in what matters to god. Ive been thinking about the idea of success and what it will mean in my priesthood. Every single day is successful and that is father candidate was saying the job of a priest is to offer the sacrifice of the mass and every single day i offer the sacrifice for the glorification of god the father and the salvation of souls. In a sense i could say every single day for priest is successful. What does that mean against that reality, in bringing people closer to price and having people come to christ with the truth and the light and being william to surrender themselves to that life and that would be a success to bring people closer to christ. It seems the case jesus founded the priesthood and he named his apostles to be his followers and preachers to bring him to him. I am the way, the truth and the light. Its an ancient tradition but ever knew. Speaking of successes and failure, the person to whom you are bringing people to jesus christ looks a lot like a massive failure when hes up on the crucifix, doesnt he . We have the crucifix in the church to remind us of what. Earlier and success might not be what we think it maybe. From a christian perspective failure leads to success that god will allow us to fail and do our sufferings is actually where our successes and triumphs come so its a reverse on the way we normally think of things in society, i would say. Yes. And also about your life as a priest. There must be joys and sours and difficulties. I was thinking, if i had to hear peoples sins i would get depressed. What is your reaction to that. Thats what many people think. I was saying when a person has a humble and contrite heart there is nothing more beautiful than that confession and it doesnt matter what they are confessing but when they come with a humble and contrite heart that is one of the greatest joys of a priest, i would say. Joys, difficulties, what stands out for you . I think the greatest joy for me would be to see the young peoplewho are coming to the churches where father cameron celebrates or where i celebrate. Many of whom are converts so they had to struggle to find their faith in a very secular culture. It had to sometimes evangelize and categorize themselves to some extent and read the fathers of the church and participate in the liturgies. Their courage in finding and persevering in their faith. Their hope against difficult odds in their belief and trust that make love, real love possible in their hearts. Love for god and love for one another and they are my greatest joy because they are the future of the church and thats the real future. Thats good to know. Young people converting or coming to the church. One of our questions was a concern. So many young people are leaving the catholic church. Can you address that . Yeah. We see it when we look into our pews and dont see many young people collegage or High School Age many people are asking what are we supposed to do and a lot of times it would make things more intact entertaining and engaging the young people will come back to the young people are searching for god. Where they can experience the mystery of god in touch by the love of god the more young people will come back. Ey arching offer it. I k we can its not entertaining things or things that try to captivate their interest right away by the archbishop is trying to promote a sense of truth, a beauty and the goodness right now. When you begin with the liturgy itself and the truth is being proclaimed in the goodness of the community informed by faith, hope and love as i was mentioning. But through the beauty of sacred worship and images and music and the reference of the centrifugal celebration itself. Engaging home always. This is essentially most important in the future of our Christian Catholic communities. You find joy in the young people you see coming in. They are being drawn to all of this and not finding it anywhere else in their lives and their lives are empty despite technology that is meant to facilitate communication. Often it leads to a sense of self frustration and isolation. They only find the healing of their loneliness mmun we will take a segment of discussion with our priest today. Hello and welcome back for our final segment of discussions with the priest. You are both local fellows. I do not ask you how you discern your vocation as a priest. Can i get them from you . I was in second grade the year i made my first holy communion. My uncle was ordained a priest for another diocese and lived elsewhere. But i was present in october of 1961 at his ordination. This was them magnificent event and its for some high mass was at our lady of angels and i can remember being present in the beautiful choir and the family was all present and i thought i think id like to do that. I thought of a lot of other things but when i saw him at the altar i thought this is a beautiful event. It was so not centered on the priest but on christ and bringing christ to people and people to christ. H, banas a sd gradsnt being condoned by theological arguments i felt as a child at that age back that seed can be planted and what about you . Your experience . I never wanted to be a priest. Priesthood would be at the bottom and now it changed when we went to lourdes, france. In a moment of prayer i had the realization i never asked god what he wanted to do. I asked the dangerous question and i felt this deep inspiration and joy to be a priest. Inspiration and joy on how the lord is asking me to give of my life to him and i followed that plath. How old are you one . 31. About a decade or so ago. Thats wonderful and very interesting. Let me ask you this question. This program i think will be broadcast on november 3rd locations awareness sunday. You are the director of the office of vocations for the new york diocese, in addition to everything else. Lets talk about our refining vocations to the priesthood among our young men or where are they coming from or how does a young man think about such a vocations . It is a great struggle. As everyone knows the numbers are not great. We dont have many inquiries. We dont have many men in the seminary. Its a big issue. Other places may be doing better than the west coast. Its a vague basic fundamental belief. Our life is a gift through our parents and the ultimate a fundamental question in my life is how be behaved and people will be open to a vocation of marriage, priesthood, religious life or the some kind of special location. We have to ask that question first before we can get him on the path of potential priesthood location. The marriage rate is down to. I can attest that that im married and there are times where it worked my vocation and my calling it would be difficult to fulfill it but it continues because it is a sacred obligation and a regifting of myself to someone else. The key element is prayer. We pray for vocations because the lord himself asked us to do that and pray to the lord of the harvest and we tape today which is october 15th, the feast of st. Teresa of jesus. Of all the law. Prayer is a hearttoheart amortization with god who we know loves us. A hearttoheart conversation to pray for their priests and their sanctification and to pay pray for seminarians and pray for those searching for meaning and truth and value of laws in their lives and through the prayer the grace of god might be communicated to them in a way that touches them become priest even though he is a fictional character the wonderful priest portrayed in the case of the kingdom. Pattering is life after the heart of the lord gentle and humble in the service to others. We are talking about a vocation. Are there hero or model or mentor priest you can recall . St. Isaac joe and grew up in france and the amount he sacrificed out of love for the gospel. The amount he loved his people he was trying to communicate the faith to was deeply inspiring and i hope one day to visit his grave site there in northern new york. He is an inspiration as a priest and a saint back and i think we only have 20 seconds left so we will wrap it up. Thank you father failure for coming and discussing with us. Father kevin, same thing. Its always great to talk to you and i learned a lot about the vocation of the priest. Its not the most difficult life of all. We dont want to scare people off. Its difficult but doable. Its joyful. And you bring joy. Thank you very much for being here and thank you for watching mosaic. Live from the cbs bay area studios businesses during the outbreak.
